Why Bobby hates BPOs

7 Sep 2008

Bobby Deol may be popular for portraying angry young man characters in his films, but in real life he thinks before he speaks and does anything. And that’s what he expects the youngsters to do as well.

Bobby, who was in Delhi with bhaiya Sunny to promote their latest film Chamku, talked at length about what surprises him about the attitude of today’s generation.

The BPO industry is what he thinks has spoilt the youngsters in India’s metropolitan cities. He said, “I am amazed to see children, fresh out of school or college, leaving at night for work. Money spoils everyone. Having and spending pocket money during school and college days is okay but earning and splurging money at a young age is something else. Having substantial amount of money at their disposal does not make them smart, it spoils them.”

And why does he think the youngsters are spoilt? “It is clear by the way they live their lives. They work during unearthly hours and sleep when others work. But the worst part of it all is that they they don’t have any long-term goals. They live for the weekends. The mantra of their lives is to work hard and partying harder. Looking forward to weekends to go pubbing with friends or colleagues is not the way youngsters should be living their lives.”

And whatever happened to being self-reliant at a young age? “Do you think such jobs prepare them for the future?” he asks and adds, “I may sound a little orthodox but I think the present generation is busy aping the West. I don’t have a problem with that. Be western in your thinking and outlook but don’t aspire to be a westerner. Don’t live their life. Leave behind the Sam or Rosy that you become while talking to the overseas clients and get back to being Sanjay or Rachna after work.” That’s quite thoughtful of you, Bobby.

Home productions allow me to do my kind of films: Bobby Deol

Sep 12. 2008

Mumbai, (IANS) After "Chamku", Bobby Deol will feature in two more home productions and says the films made by his own banner gives him a chance to play the kind of roles he wishes to play.

"I have realised home productions give me the choice to do the kind of films I want to do. Outside producers only come to you with the films that they believe in," Bobby told IANS in an interview.

Bobby has become pro-active - he had been a part of the music sitting, pre-production, post-production of his recently released "Chamku", which was produced by his banner Vijayta Films Pvt. Ltd.

"It's ('Chamku') my baby. And I want to do this more often. It's with my new film that I've become involved with our home production. I was involved with its shooting and post-production. I was like an apprentice on the job, learning about how to produce a film. My brother believes I've been lazy," said Bobby.

Like his father Dharmendra and elder brother Sunny, Bobby is now fully into family concerns. But he is not ready to direct a film yet.

"I've been part of this industry for years. And my brother is into direction. I don't feel ready for it. I wish I was."

What Bobby is ready for is another film with his father.

"There's no other way we can come together on screen. Sangeeth Sivan is directing it. It's the story of a father and son discovering each other during a journey.

"Then I'm doing an action-comedy with Sunny Deol. But it won't be just fun. We brothers will share a lot of emotional moments. We can't come together without sharing emotions. That will be directed by Samir Karnik, who is another of my favourite directors. I've done two films with Samir and we Deols are very impressed by his work."

Asked about outside films, Bobby said: "Though I'm open to outside offers it's definitely more productive to do home productions where everything is under our control. And we have three in-house actors."

Dharmendra recently underwent knee surgery in the US.

"And he has recovered very well. I'm dying to work with him. We start in October end."

If I ever become director, I’ll probably lose my mind'

Mumbai, August 06, 2008

It's no secret that the shy guy is most comfortable with his entire khandan at their Juhu-Vile Parle bungalow.. and is seen only once in a very bluish moon on the party scene.
The family’s Vijayta banner is now returning to film production with Chamku.. just the right time to get him into the chat mode. Over to Bobby Deol in a q and a with Hiren Kotwani.

Why have you been keeping a low profile?
I feel awkward hyping myself. I’ll try but hota nahin hai.

Vijayta Films has returned to film production with Chamku. Why the long gap?
We weren’t organised earlier. So we waited a while. With in-house movies you can explore genres. Chamku is a serious action drama.

But the title gives the impression of a comedy.
No way. Chandrama Singh aka Chamku is brought up by a Naxal after his family is brutally killed.

A westernised dude playing a Naxal?
He starts out as a Naxal and then assists the government in a covert operation. If I was playing a hardcore Naxal, I’d have had to work on my body language and diction.

Your director Kabeer Kaushik’s first film Saher didn’t work commercially.
Kabeer had approached me for Saher but I wasn’t sure then. He rewrote the part for Arshad (Warsi). We were planning to start our own film, I liked this script and we were rolling.

How involved are you in the production?
I’m an apprentice, looking after the post-production. Dad and bhaiya handle the production.

Kabeer Kaushik skipped the music release presumably because he’s miffed with Sunny for interfering in the editing. Kabeer was shooting for Arshad’s first film production in London. My brother is a creative man, he respects those who are creative and will never interfere with their work.

But every producer sits with the editor and discusses what can be edited out. It’s our money at stake, we have a right to our opinions. But it’s always a healthy discussion, never a heated debate.

How come you’re not acting in The Man which Sunny is directing?
How come my brother is not in Chamku? Simple. Chamku is for me, The Man is for bhaiya. Sangeet Sivan is directing a film with dad and me and Sameer Karnik is making another with bhaiyya and me.

There was a film with all the three Deols too?
Anil Sharma is working on the script. We finalised the idea together.

Your father had once said that the Deols think with the heart and not the head.. so they don’t make good businessmen. Do you go with that?
We’re trying to cut all the routes from the heart to the head.. so the mind can work independently. We know this is a business but we can’t change the way we are.

Will you direct some day?

I don’t know. Right now I’m involved with the editing, background music and mixing. I don’t like to control people but a director is the captain of the ship. (Laughs) If I ever become director, I’ll probably lose my mind.. but never say never.

You have a lot of confidence in Sameer Karnik. Apparently, you even invested in Nanhe Jaisalmer.
I believe in him. Nanhe Jaisalmer was a sweet film.. We have another film with Dwij Yadav coming up, Roshan, later this year. But I haven’t invested in either films.

Was it because of Sameer Karnik that you agreed to do a cameo in Heroes?
I did it because I liked the subject.. and because Sunny bhaiya and I are playing brothers.

In Ek – The Power of One you’re playing an assassin.
(Laughs) I’m the industry’s killer, I’ve played an assassin in so many films. But it was good fun to match wits with a cop like Nana (Patekar). He would often talk about dad.

Yours was the best performance in Jhoom Barabar Jhoom. Why aren’t you doing more films with Yash Raj?
I’ve no idea. During Jhoom.. I was asked about issues between my brother and Yash Raj. Issues happen.. people don’t live with them. You forgive and forget. If they want to work with me again, they’ll offer me another film.

Your dad’s just made a comeback..
(Interrupts) Dad never went away. He did some films that weren’t all that great. Finally we told him to relax, we’d take care of everything. That’s when he started doing good films and people started talking about a comeback.

You’ve become very selective too?
I can’t do 10 films just for big money. I’d rather hang around with my kids.

How old are your sons? Are they interested in the movies?
The elder is seven, the younger one will turn four this year. When I was a child, I never looked at dad as an actor. He was my hero. I don’t think my kids look at me as actor either.. but they get excited when we go out and people recognise me.

You’ve named your younger son after your dad. Is Dharam like his grandfather?
I wanted to name my older son after dad but everyone wondered how I could call my son by my dad’s name. I reasoned that everyone addressed dad as papa. When my second son was born, I decided to call him Dharam. I’m so proud of my dad. And it’s cute when he’s called Chhota Dharampa.

You were a party person once. But marriage and fatherhood have turned you into a complete homebody.
When you’re growing up you want to experience life because that’s what all your friends are doing. But when I go to a nightclub now, there are only youngsters around. It’s not as if I don’t enjoy partying, I just don’t enjoy it so much now. When you have kids, you want to spend more time with them. If you can’t shoulder the responsibilities, why have kids? When you’re a parent you have to behave like one. You can’t be a teenager all your life.

Your wife Tanya runs a furniture business. Do you give her suggestions?
Every time I suggest something, she asks, “What are you saying? That won’t look nice at all.” Then I’m like, “Okay , fine.” She’s good at what she does and is doing very well.

Does she still style your outfits?
After the kids, it’s too much work. They are a 24-hour job. She does tell me if she doesn’t like something. And I can’t go shopping without her. I don’t know what to buy when I’m alone. But shopping with women requires lots of patience.. they like to check everything, so many times.

You had ventured into the restaurant business in partnership with friends. Any more plans after you sold it off?
It’s not my cup of tea. Right now, I’m only interested in making movies.

В принципе ничего особо нового, но все равно приятно..

Bobby Deol is setting up a production empire
By Subhash K. Jha, November 17, 2008 - 14:19 IST

After losing ten kgs for his role in Chamku, Bobby Deol is now heavily into chocolates. "It wasn't easy for me to lose weight. But once I made up my mind, I did it. But now I'm trying to make back that weight and binging on chocolates."

Like his dad and elder brother, Bobby Deol is now fully into family concerns. In fact the younger Deol scion is so much into production now, he wishes he had got into before.

"It's with my film Chamku that I've become involved with our home production. I've been totally involved with its shooting and post-production. I'm like an apprentice on the job, learning about how to produce a film. My brother believes I've been lazy. But I now realize home productions give me the choice to do the kind of films I want to do. Outside producers only come to you with the films that THEY believe in. For Chamku, I was part of the music sitting, pre-production, post-production. It's my baby."

Bobby now wants to assist directors and get more proficient with the technique of filmmaking. "I've been part of this industry for years. And my brother is into direction. I don't feel ready for it. I wish I was."

What Bobby is ready for is another film with his father Dharmendra. "It's a father-son story. There's no other way we can come together on screen. Sangeeth Sivan is directing it. It's the story of a father and son discovering each other during a journey. Then I'm doing an action-comedy with Sunny Deol. But it won't be just fun. We brothers will share a lot of emotional moments We can't come together without sharing emotions. That will be directed by Samir Karnik who's another of my favourite director's right now. I've done two films with Samir and we Deols are very impressed by his work."

Sangeeth Sivan and Samir Karnik are part of a new set of directors the Deols want to cultivate, like they once nurtured the talents of Gurinder Chadha and Raj Kumar Santoshi.

Says Bobby, "Though I'm open to outside offers, it's definitely more productive to do home productions where everything is under our control. And we have three in house actors."

Dad Dharmendra recently underwent knee surgery in the US. "And he has recovered very well. I'm dying to work with him."

Now it's Bobby's turn to get hurt

Friday, November 21, 2008

The actor hurt his knee when he was attending his cousin’s birthday, writes Rashmi
Hemrajani

Just weeks after Hrithik Roshan got the spring back in his steps after being laid off from the dance floor for injuring his knee, it’s Bobby Deol’s turn. The actor hurt his knee when he was attending the birthday party of his uncle.

He says, “Nothing to worry. It is just that a few days ago I was at Dara Uncle’s birthday party. My cousins tried to lift me and I hurt my knee in the process. But nothing’s serious and I will be back on my feet again. Usually I don’t party. I hate it. But it was a family occasion and we had great fun.

He also has “little fever and throat infection” but says that he won’t let it affect his work.
Talk veers towards the latest hit Dostana, where we see Bobby waxing his chest hair. It was painful, isn’t it?

“Yes (it did pain!).
I don’t know how people do it every time. Now-a-days, there is a lot of emphasis on looks. I have seen a lot of young boys take steroids to put on muscles. But I would like to warn them that they could have lung and liver problems. And they must seek some professional help.”

In Dostana, we see Bobby play the role of an ideal dad. So, how would he rate himself as a dad off screen?

He replies, “I try and spend more time with my children, I want to establish a strong bond with them.”

We tell Bobby that he has managed to keep himself away from controversies for quite sometime now…

“I don’t like to let media into my personal life. I know of a lot of newcomers who do that and it a very sad attitude towards life.”

Bobby is now concentrating on working on the film being directed by his own brother. He says, “My brother (Sunny) is directing a movie titled The Man which also stars dad (Dharmendra) and Shilpa Shetty. I have realised that home productions give me the choice to do the kind of films I want to do. Outside producers only come to you with the films that they believe in.”

Mr Right

Nov 28, 2008

First Yash Raj’s Jhoom Barabar Jhoom and now Karan Johar’s Dostana. You are increasingly being seen in outside banners. What prompted the change?
Years ago, I did get offers for special appearances in big hits made by these banners but I couldn’t do them. Basically, I don’t do special appearances. But Karan and I go back a long way. When Tarun came and narrated the script to me, I thought it was a role of substance. But I must confess, I didn’t expect this kind of a reaction. After Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, I have realised that a cameo can make a difference if it’s interesting, and you need not be the protagonist.

So, you have got a positive response.
Definitely. I played a dignified level-headed man, the kind women would fall in love with, and sure enough many girls have come and told me that they would love to have a man like me. In the film, though, John and Abhishek tried to take me for a ride with their pranks (laughs).

Looks like you had fun shooting for the film.
I know Abhishek since childhood. Priyanka and I have done so many films together. John is a friend and together we had lot of fun. Even the kid was a natural. He reminded me of my own sons.

What’s with the short hair in the film?
That was my look in Chamku and since I was shooting for that, I decided to continue with the same hairstyle. The styling of suits has been done by Aki Narula.

Aren’t you doing a film Cheers! with your father?
Yes, it is being directed by Sangeeth Sivan. It’s about a father-son relationship. The two of us are on a road trip and during the journey we deal with all the problems that are common to every father and son and in the process get closer to each other.

Nanhe Jaisalmer didn’t do well, neither did Naqaab or Chamku.
One can’t really predict which film will work and which won’t. You choose films depending on the script, characters and what is being made at that time. Nanhe Jaisalmer and Naqaab were interesting films but maybe something was lacking in them. Sometimes when a film does well, you wonder how this worked when it wasn’t such a good film and sometimes a film looks good to you, but doesn’t work at the box-office. Maybe I should have chosen different roles.

Which are your next releases?
I have Ek, an action film with Nana Patekar and Roshan, which is a meaningful film, something on the lines of Nanhe Jaisalmer.

'Abhay Deol is a great cartoonist'

23 Mar, 2009

Abhay Deol received a lot of compliments for his performance in Dev D. The youngest of the Deol hunks made his khandaan proud with his remarkable performance. And Dimpy, as Abhay is lovingly called, will be happy to know that his bade bhaiya Bobby Deol is completely fida oer his performance. We recently met Bobby, who was extremely happy with Abhay’s success.

“I loved Dev D, it’s awesome. Abhay has given a superb film and I am so proud of him.” Bobby couldn’t stop praising Abhay. “Dimpy is a man of his own mind. He The kind of films he is doing, others would have been very scared to do. He has created a mark for himself; I’m happy for him!”

“Abhay is very talented. As a child he used to paint. He was a good cartoonist,” informs Bobby, “It’s nice that he is doing films appealing to today’s youth. Thanks to the multiplex culture, that his kind of cinema is being appreciated.”

So would he like to share screen space with Abhay? “Why not! If we get a right script and interesting roles, we will of course be seen together. But nothing unique has crossed our paths yet,” says Bobby Deol, whose Ek, The Power of One is all set to hit the theatres.

Bobby: I'm just talking about my family

25 Mar 2009

No personal questions!” we were told before we got down to interviewing actor Bobby Deol.

Now that'll be one drab interview, we thought, only to be proved wrong. Read between the lines to understand what we mean...

How has he been, we ask and get a “Fine, thank you!” in reply. So we ask him about his forthcoming film and his role in it. “I'm doing an action oriented role in this film after a very long time. I play an assassin who doesn't have a family, but eventually falls in line. It's an interesting character.”

But doesn't it sound like any other rehashed Bollywood movie, the bad guy turning good? “Isn't nearly every Hindi film a rehash of some movie or the other?” he counters. “Firstly I prefer saying Hindi cinema coz I'm against the term Bollywood,” he reiterates. “Every love story or Hindi film has the same story, but what makes it different is the treatment it's given. Much depends on how it is stylised, how the characters are moulded, and how the story is treated.”

Bobby has been in the industry for quite a few years but ask him how come he has not been able to create the kind of hype that his contemporaries have and he he says, “I don't know! I have always put in my best but the answer lies in the film clicking at the box office. It's not just the actor who's responsible for a film becoming a hit. A whole lot of work and people are involved in it. But I wouldn't want to blame anyone. It's sheer luck I guess.”

He has a star father and a fairly successful actor Sunny Deol as Bada Bhaiyya. So, does he take any help from them in choosing his roles? “They are always there for me. They are my strength. I'm lucky to have such an illustrious family. We love each other and have immense respect for each other.”

And what about sisters Esha and Ahana Deol? “I'm just talking about my family, no one else,” is the curt reply we get. Well seems to be some problem there, specially since both Papa and Sunny Bhaiyya seem to be rather protective towards the two girls!

As we wonder about that and not taking any further chance of the actor clamming up, we move on to a more affable topics. How do his wife Tania and kids react to his movies? “They watch all my films and give me their honest opinions. Tania is my biggest critic.”

So what is his dream role? “Any role that others would dream of doing,” says Bobby, whose next film Cheers is with Papa Dharmendra. “I’m looking forward to the movie. It’ll start rolling in April and it's based on generation gap between father and son. It’s an emotional comedy.

Bobby also happens to be one actor who has successfully avoided all controversies over years. Ask him how he manages that and he says, “I’m a simple person and I lead a simple life. I share a good rapport with nearly everyone in the industry and that I guess is the reason.”
