Bobby Deol stays away from manipulative people

AllBollywood.com Staff
Monday May 19, 2008

Mumbai, May 20 (IANS) Actor Bobby Deol, who has always been rather laid back in life, says he tries to stay away from people in the film industry who manipulate and backstab."I'm sure there's jealousy and negativity in every profession. In the film industry, you see people manipulating and backstabbing. It used to disturb me earlier. But now I'm conditioned to the people and circumstances around me. I try to stay away from such people," Bobby told IANS.

He also says he likes portraying people who are not like him.

"I like playing people who are not like me. For example, I always play a rich guy. But I'm not rich in real life!"

The actor suddenly finds himself inundated with work.

"I've several releases coming up. Am I tired? No, just apprehensive about how people will react to so many of my films tumbling out."

He recently shot for a film in Chandigarh with director Sangeeth Sivan, the man who styled the comedy "Kya Kool Hain Hum". "Yes," says Bobby, "But before that he did 'Zor' with my brother Sunny. So we know each other from much before. Like me he's a softie at heart. He did one actioner with my brother. Now he's doing one with me."

Nana Patekar is Bobby's co-star in the yet-untitled film by Sivan. "I had heard so many stories about him. But he's very chilled out. Actually, I get along with everybody. Nana is a very unique actor. I also worked with Zarina Wahabji for the first time. She's such a warm and caring person. We had a great time. Also, I was doing an action flick after so long."

Bobby is also game for playing negative characters. "See I've played ruthless killers in 'Bicchoo', 'Badal' and 'Soldier'. My character in 'Shaka Laka Boom Boom' was a musician who's so much in love with his music that he was willing to go to any lengths for his passion. Only at the end of the journey does he realise how wrong he was."

Bobby was fascinated by the evil character. "He was like a small kid who says, 'I want, I want' without seeing how rude that child seems. I guess I'm a child at heart. But I don't have that mean streak."

One person Bobby loved working with was Shaad Ali in "Jhoom Baraabar Jhoom". "He's such a chilled out guy. He treats everyone, from actors to spot boys, equally well. We've known each other for years. I didn't feel the least awkward being directed by him."

Bobby Deol is getting high on power. The junior Deol is now learning power yoga to keep fit. He tells HiTLIST what got him hooked to the wellness regime that has the likes of Madonna bending over backwards…

When did you start learning power yoga?
I started learning it more than a month back, when my wife (Tanya) asked me to try it. My friends were also telling me to try it as they had benefited from it greatly. I am learning at home from my trainer, Ashray, who is Bharat Thakur’s assistant. Before I started training, I never knew what it was about. Initially, I was a bit sceptical, but after doing it, I feel power yoga is very good — it’s an aerobic kind of workout.

How different is power yoga from yoga?
I haven’t done yoga, ever. Yoga is about meditation and breathing while power yoga has those plus exercises. It has a different format of training and working out, where one uses one’s body weight. Power yoga is a combination of postures and breathing.

How long do you train?
I can’t train for more than an hour and-a-half every day, after which I feel like dying. It’s exhausting, as it works out every part of your body. But when I come out of the dying stage, I feel great. Working out makes me think fresh.

Did you take up power yoga because you wanted a good build for Anil Sharma’s Apne, where you play a boxer?
That was part of it. Apart from the fact that I required to build a good physique for Apne, I also realised that I needed to work out. It’s never too late to shape your body. I don’t want a big, bulky body — just something that will keep me fit and healthy.

Have you lost weight?
Losing weight is a gradual process and takes time. I can’t lose immediately. But I am on a diet prescribed by Pooja Makhija, which avoids sugars and oils and requires meals every two hours.

Bobby enters Yashraj camp

13 years after falling out with Sunny Deol, Yashraj Films signs younger brother for Shaad Ali’s film

The bad blood between Sunny Deol and Yash Chopra after Darr ('93) is the stuff of a Bollywood legend. Sunny Deol felt like he was cheated by the Chopras, and that Shah Rukh Khan was given a better deal than he had been given. Thereafter, the Deols and the Chopras never fraternised. But 13 years later, it looks like the Chopras want to bridge the gap.

They've approached Bobby Deol for their forthcoming venture, Jhoom Bara Bar Jhoom. To be directed by Shaad Ali, the film stars Abhishek Bachchan and Preity Zinta. Incidentally, Bobby Deol was not the first choice for the film. The Chopras had approached John Abraham for the role, but his erratic behaviour threw them off. “John was behaving strangely,” says our source close to Yashraj Films. “He wanted them to add a song in the script and make some alterations. But Shaad Ali was not willing to make any changes.”

When contacted, director Shaad Ali, says, “I've just come back from Turkey and I am currently busy with the score of the film. But I am not in a position to divulge anything. I categorically refuse to give interviews; I don't talk about my films that are under production. Please wait for the official announcement from Yashraj Films.”

The director wanted to cast John in the role because of his sex appeal and suavity. But when the producers realised that John was not interested in playing second fiddle to Abhishek, they started looking elsewhere.

So, is Bobby John's replacement in the film? “No, a replacement can only happen when you sign an actor. They were talking to a couple of actors for the role and finally zeroed in on Bobby Deol,” says our source. This is the first time that Bobby will work in a Yashraj film. “Earlier Yashraj Films wouldn't approach Bobby because of the issue they had with Sunny. And Bobby too kept his distance from the Yashraj camp. The only Deol who worked for the Chopras was Esha Deol in Kaal,” says our source.

Bobby Deol, on his part, said, “I don't talk about my projects. I would appreciate you calling the director or the producer for details. I am neither confirming nor denying anything.” Bobby's skepticism about discussing the project may be a result of the Chopras’s prohibitive stance in regard with divulging information about their projects.

In addition with this being his first film with the Chopras, it will also mark Bobby's first title with Abhishek Bachchan. In an industry that swears by the friendship of Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan, let's see if the second generation lives up to the legendary Jai-Veeru camaraderie.

Now, a cake named after Bobby Deol
Apr 28, 2006

Perfumes and designer labels have been launched after some of Bollywood’s biggest names, but this is probably the first time that a cake has been named after a star.

Confectioner Milanda Jagtiani has named one of her specially made cakes after Bobby Deol, so that whoever wants to order the tall, dark and handsome creation has only to say, “I want a Bobby Deol cake,” and it will delivered within two days.

His favourite things

Says Milanda, who owns the Sante food store in Bandra, “It started three years ago, when a friend of Bobby’s ordered a special made-to-order cake for him. She said he loves cheesecake, chocolate mousse and brownie nuts, so could I make a cake with all his favorite ingredients?

Once I did it, and she gave it to him, not just Bobby, but many other people started ordering it, too. Each time we made it, I had to list out all the ingredients, so finally, we decided to name it the Bobby cake.”

The Bobby cake
So what’s the sinful Bobby cake made of? “The layers are made up of brownie cake, with walnuts, caramelised nuts, praline, chocolate mousse, and New York cheesecake.

The entire cake is then covered with chocolate ganache. It is not an easy cake to make and takes more than a day. It takes a whole day just to make the base,” explains Milanda.

But that’s not all. It’s not a cherry on the cake that makes the topping, but a cute brown marzipan puppy. “That’s what Bobby likes (and Fardeen too), and I love the droopy puppy,” adds Milanda.

I feel special: Bobby

Says Bobby, “It’s very sweet of Milanda to name a cake after me; I feel very special. I guess I have ordered that cake so often that they finally decided to name it after me,” he laughs.

“My sons and nephews all love gooey, chocolate cakes, not the white ones. We have many birthdays in our family, so we keep ordering this cake. I guess what makes it more special is that it’s made with a lot of love.”

Milanda Jagtiani
The Bobby cake, serving 10 to 12 people, is steeply priced at Rs 1,700, and regulars like Fardeen Khan swear by it.

Fardeen, who has ordered the cake on a number of occasions, says, “I love Milanda’s cakes, and my two favourites are the Bobby cake and the brownie cake (with butterscotch, macadamia nuts and caramel).”

Milanda bakes all her pastry products herself. Her list of celebrity clients includes Karan Johar, Sunny Deol, Saif Ali Khan, Aditya and Payal Chopra, Arbaaz and Malaika Arora, Susanne Roshan, Hemant Trevedi, Nawaz Singhania, Leslie Lewis, Rahul Khanna and Amrita Singh.

And Katrina Kaif drops in at the store four days a week, for her favourite smoked salmon sandwich, or a cream cheese bagel.

Bobbing back

After a lull, Bobby Deol is getting himself and his career back in shape

Subhash K Jha

Sometimes you need a push to get back on track

Bobby Deol is all set to get himself and his career in shape. He has begun working out rigorously, and the credit goes to Anil Sharma's Bobby, where he plays a boxer. “I've been working out religiously lately,” says Bobby. “Sometimes you need a push to get back on track. I guess I've got it now. I knew that I was neglecting myself. But then I was told to get into shape for my boxer's role. That was reason enough to start working out. Now I feel happier and more confident than ever before.”

Bobby insists that he has 'grown up' considerably lately. “I've stopped being the baby of the family now,” he says with a laugh. “Ours is a large family and we all live together. Now, I feel responsible towards the whole family. I've become more mature in the last few years.”

Will the new-found maturity show in his career too? “I admit I have chosen roles unwisely earlier. But I don't regret doing any of them,” he replies. “One learns from one's mistakes. Today I'm signing films very cautiously. I was happy being at home for nearly three months. I needed to connect with my sons. I remember how Sunny Bhaiyya and I missed dad during our growing years because he was busy working for his family. I can afford to take it easy. But now it's time to get back to work.”

Any regrets about being so laidback about his career? “None at all. Some people make plans for their life. I didn't,” he says. “Yeah, I missed out on some good roles like Mani Ratnam's Yuva, due to this. But that's okay. What isn't meant to be in life, won't be. Thankfully now I'm becoming more comfortable with people outside the familiar circle. I'm ready to break free I guess.”

After a lull of nearly three months when he has been working out and spending time with his two sons, Bobby is all set to start two major films. “First, in July, is Suneel Darshan's film,” he says. “Suneel is moving away from family-oriented drama, he realises that today's films have to be targeted at the youth. Even I'm asked all the time why I don't do more films like Soldier and Gupt. I guess audiences do want to see me in young, energetic roles. In Suneel's film I play a role that has shades of grey in it.” “Our films are undergoing a change, getting yonger. I'm definitely going to be part of that change,” he adds.

Bobby also teams up with Abhishek Bachchan in Shaad Ali's Jhoom Baraabar. “I've never worked with Abhishek before, though I know him very well,” he says. “He's great fun, makes you laugh all the time.”

Years ago dad Dharmendra had played himself in Hrishikesh Mukherjee's Guddi . Now Bobby has done the same in Samir Karnik's (Kyun…Ho Gaya Na) Nanhe Jaisalmer. “Yes, I play Bobby Deol in the film, which is unlike anything I've done so far,” he reveals shyly. “I enjoyed shooting for the film in Jaisalmer where I actually saw a sandstorm and the rains happening simultaneously.”

Bobby talks about his 'family film' Apne. “It's not exactly a family film. We Deols aren't producing it,” he clarifies. “For now we're happy just acting in it. When it comes to taking a financial risk in film production, it's good to be a son-in-law instead of a father-in-law. Apne is a family- friend Anil Sharma's film. It's about a father's dreams for his sons. Dad, Sunny and I are acting together for the first time. Let's hope the audience is as excited about it as we are…”

The icing on the cake in Bobby's life right now has come from a confectioner in Mumbai called Milinda, who has recently named a multi-layered cake after Bobby. “We're a large family and we have birthdays all the time. This lady makes all our cakes. I know she's fond of me, but I never imagined she'd actually make a cake from all the ingredients I love,” says Bobby. “I've a major weakness for sweets. And to me this is a truly emotional homage to my sweet tooth.”

* Some people make plans for their life. I didn't. Yeah, I missed out on some good roles like Mani Ratnam's Yuva due to this. But that's okay — Bobby Deol

By Subhash K. Jha, Mumbai, Aug 22:
Bobby Deol says he is doing probably the most tense role of his career in Suneel Darshan's "Shaka Laka Boom Boom".

On location in Johannesberg, Bobby screamed non-stop at Upen Patel, who is playing an important role in the film.

"These are really some of the most dramatic scenes I've done. I've never done anything like this film before," Bobby told IANS.

Bobby believes in learning on the job.

"I guess I've been waiting for a chance like this. This role gives me the chance to really sink into something that was a challenge. In fact, when Suneel narrated it to me I was like, 'Will I be able to do it?' The entire film hinges on how I carry off my character, my new look and my new clothes. I've worked on my hair and clothes. I'm wearing more body-hugging clothes. Generally, I'm in baggy T-shirts."

What's exciting for Bobby is that his director has chosen to switch lanes.

"Suneel made the switch at the right time. It's definitely an emotional film but very different from anything Suneel has done. I hope family audiences respond well to Suneel's new avatar; there're some bold shades in my character that will definitely raise some eyebrows."

Bobby seems to have found new reserves of energy to take on this role. Generally known to be laidback, Bobby is giving his all to "Shaka Laka...". He declined Ajay Devgan's role in Mani Ratnam's "Yuva".

Ask him about Upen, who plays his pupil, and Bobby is guardedly positive.

"He's new, raw and eager. He's a young kid. I remember I was like him once. But I had the advantage of being a part of the industry. He's from the outside and really working hard. That's important for anyone in this industry."

As for the special bonding that Upen's publicity machinery has been broadcasting, Bobby laughs, "I get along well with everyone. I've never had a problem with anyone I've worked with."

Bobby is impressed with newcomer Kangana Ranaut.

"I hadn't seen Kangana's work before working with her. But she caught my eye in the promos of 'Gangster'. I think this industry needs lots of talented newcomers like her."

Bobby is now looking forward to working with fellow Aquarians Abhishek Bachchan and Preity Zinta, and also Amitabh Bachchan in Shaad Ali's "Jhoom Baraabar Jhoom".

"Mr. Bachchan and I have worked together in 'Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyon'. But that film was out of the theatres before we could say the title."

Bobby is also in a family saga called "Apne" where he will share the screen space with his father, Dharmendra, and brother, Sunny.

"That's a very nice subject. We shot portions in Bangkok for quite a while recently. I did some very tough boxing shots in a stadium in Bangkok."

Bobby shot fighting sequences with a group of trained boxers including an African-American from New Jersey named Johnny, who's playing a villain.

"Boxing is one helluva of challenging sport. Not only do you have to be physically fit to practice it, it also makes you more physically fit. Boxing has made me more conscious of my physique. I needed that push. And I thank 'Apne' director Anil Sharma for it."

Bobby has also signed a film with Abbas-Mustan.

"They're working on the script. And we should roll by the end of the year. But my next release is Samir Karnik's 'Nanhe Jaisalmer'. It's a very sweet film. I'm proud of it. I couldn't finish the dubbing before I left Mumbai because of a viral infection. So, I've just a couple of scenes to dub."

Bobby will soon start working in "Jhoom Baraabar Jhoom".

Bobby's tired of giving interviews
April 04, 2007
rediff

It's a tough job, but someone's got to do it.

Bobby Deol stars in this week's release Shakalaka Boom Boom, with Kangana Ranaut, Upen Patel and Celina Jaitley. And while he can be charming on video, the actor is more than fed up with giving the same old interviews.

Video: Bobby Deol goes Boom Boom

Patcy N cornered him, and while Bobby forbade her from asking anything not related to Boom, tried to get more out of the actor than a yawn. Here's the exact transcript:

Bobby: Your job is to take interviews, but that's not my job. I hate giving interviews. I have to, because my producer wants it. If I had my way, I would never give interviews. People will see the promos, they will smell if it is a good film, and come to the theatre. If they like it, then its fine; if they don't, we can't help it.

After all, what can I say differently about the movie? On every channel I will answer the same questions: What is the film's USP? What is your role in the film? Why did you do this film?

Patcy: I will ask some different questions.

Bobby: Kitna different ho sakta hai? (How different can it be?)

Patcy: You must be saying the same thing over and over again

Bobby: No, sometime I miss a few words, and make it sound different. (Laughs) I am just so fed up. I have been traveling; I am down.

Patcy: Just imagine how many interviews we have to do.

Bobby: Yeah, but you all should say, 'no, we don't want to do interviews of Shakalaka Boom Boom.'

Patcy: I wish we could.

Bobby: Bolna chahiye (You should)

Patcy: Then let's ask you some other questions, and later come back to Shakalaka Boom Boom.

Bobby: No, no, no. I will not answer anything other than Shakalaka Boom Boom. Don't even enter other movies. When other movies are releasing, their producers will catch hold of rediff and I will give interviews for those.

Patcy: So can we know what Shakalaka Boom Boom is all about?

Bobby: It is a film based on the music industry and how they function inside -- the rivalry and manupilation and power play happening.

Patcy: Is the rivalry between the composers or singers?

Bobby: My character in the film is a musician and a singer too. He composes his own songs. He needs the support of others. But he has worked very hard to achieve what he has achieved in his profession. He has worked so hard that his biggest insecurity is that he is always upset with God, that He didn't give him more talent so the music would just come out from within him without any effort.

There is always a big fear in anybody who reaches a high point in their career. They have the fear that someone will come and take their place from them.

That's what happens in my profession too. Somebody who is very talented but very arrogant comes in. And it's about how that arrogance of this guy comes in way of his career too, that is played by Upen Patel. He treats people in a wrong way. And he does the biggest mistake, he pushes my character in the wrong way. And I react to this and see that no one can reach the high point except for me.

Patcy: Is it like you and Upen are working together and then you guys split?

Bobby: We are two different individuals, working differently. I am in the industry for longer and I have achieved a lot. And we are partners in the music company, so that way he has lot of power. He uses his power to get back in a very arrogant manner.

Patcy: How was it working with your co-stars Upen Patel, Kangana Ranaut and Celina Jaitley?

Bobby: We were working as co-actors who were trying to do the best for the movie, It was nice working with Upen. He is a very chilled out guy, very professional determined about what he wants from his life. He is very focussed. It's been fun working with everyone, they are all chilled out people. It was fun. When we were not working, we would spend time together.

Patcy: You shot in Johannesburg. When you guys weren't shooting, what would you do?

Bobby: We were always shooting! When we go outdoors, the producer sees to it that we are shooting everyday. We were wrking long hours. There were days when we I could leave earlier than others, as the script did not require me to be there. But at the most we would chat and dine together.

Patcy: The promos don't reveal who has which lady.

Bobby: The promos are meant to give you the feel of the movie, but at the same time don't want to reveal anything. The film hasn't released so I can't say who is with whom. But the film is based on human nature. Every human has a good side and bad side to him.

Patcy: This is your third film with Suneel Darshan. How was it working with him?

Bobby: He is like my family. I know him too well, he has worked with my brother too. Its almost like my family production.

Patcy: Can you tell us some anecdotes from the film?

Bobby: This is very difficult question. Life main kitna kuch hota rehta hai, log puchte hai kuch bataye, tab kuch yaad nahi aata. (So much happens in life, but when people ask for an incident, nothing comes to mind.) It's very difficult to recollect, but yes, we did have fun moments.

Patcy: During the shoot was there any scene that was particularly difficult to do?

Bobby: There were some scenes, but if I tell you, you will know everything. But yes, there are such scenes you find very awkward, but as an actor you have to do.

Patcy: I want to know about your home production Apne.

Bobby: I am here to talk only about Shakalaka Boom Boom. When Apne comes I will talk about it.

Patcy: How far has it progressed?

Bobby: Its finished it will release this year.

Patcy: Is it difficult working with your brother Sunny and father Dharmendra?

Bobby: No its not. It's like sitting at home and being yourself.

Patcy: Are they strict on the set?

Bobby: They are not. They are just exactly the way they are at home.

Patcy: How are they at home?

Bobby: Just like a father and brother would be.

Patcy: What are your other movies in hand?

Bobby: I have 6 releases this year. They are all coming out one after the other, so you will see a lot of myself coming this year.

Patcy: Any career mistakes?

Bobby: I am here to speak only about Shakalaka Boom Boom. My greatest career mistake is giving interviews. I tell the person I will only talk about that movie and allow that person to ask me more.

Patcy: After doing so many movies, do you think you have arrived or are you still struggling?

Bobby: Every day of your life is struggle. You are always struggling to achieve more and more. So one can never say I am not struggling.

Patcy: Any regrets in life?

Bobby: No.

Patcy: What is your favourite pastime, when not shooting?

Bobby: Giving interviews, which is what I am doing. Otherwise...

Patcy: Otherwise?

Bobby: I just like to be at home with my family.

Patcy: Anything else you would like to say?

Bobby: Thank you for bearing with me.

Patcy: Was the interview short enough?

Bobby: It was a short and sweet interview.

уфф... шо-та я тоже притомилась таскать эти интервью.. Потом продолжу, тем более что все равно ни в жисть столько не переведу..

Bobby Deol's fast friendship
27 Jul, 2008 12:02 pm ISTlINDIATIMES MOVIES

While many talk of a few long-lasting friendships, you know the Suniel Shetty-Sanjay Dutt types, one jodi is always missed out. Not many know that Bobby Deol and Arjun Rampal are thick friends and have known each other since the past twelve years, right from the time Arjun walked the ramp.

Apparently, the two were regulars at the parties, and have let their hair down together quite a bit. More sober now, Arj and Bobs still remain a best buddy jodi of tinsel town.

Bobby romances a school teacher

Actor Bobby Deol makes a comeback of sorts in the action-packed-thriller with a heart - Chamku . With the film coming from the home stable - Vijayta Films , the Deols are hoping to repeat the Apne success story and re-surrect their home production in the market.

Music director Monty Sharma - who also composed the songs of Saawariya - is upbeat about the songs in this one. "There are 5 songs, my favourtie of which is Kithe Jawa sung by Richa. It's magnificent, and there's also a remix version of it," says Monty.

From the romantic Saawariya to the action packed Chamku, the transformation, Monty tells us, was no mean feat 'as emotions form the basis of this film as well'. The story revolves around a Naxalite - played by Bobby Deol - falling in love with a school teacher - essayed by Priyanka Chopra.

Himesh Reshammiya was the music composer of Apne , the film that marked the comeback of the Deols, but it was Monty who did the background score of the film. "There's no competition between Himesh and me; we're friends!" says the music director who is busy composing for as many as 21 films!

Bobby Deol is stepping out
Thursday, July 31, 2008 03:09 [IST]
After over six months in hiding, Bobby Deol is back in the spotlight as his first release of 2008 nears. Known for being media shy, Bobby in a recent interview spoke out saying, “I don’t believe in being overshadowed by others. I need time for my own private life. In fact my whole family is like that. We hardly go for awards or make appearances in reality shows as others do. I can’t handle too much of attention and exposure.”

He adds, “But I’m no one to judge what the others are doing or want to do. I know what I have to do and I act accordingly. I understand it’s important for everyone to be in the loop of things.”

“Chamku (his first release for the year), falls under the catagory of action drama. It is a very realistically shot film about a joint operation between the RAW and the Intelligence Bureau. It the story of a boy who never had choices in his life and is thrown into situations that forces him to do things. It is not a very commercial film in terms of flavour,” Bobby says.

Bobby’s last few films Nanhe Jaisalmer, Naqaab, Apne and Jhoom Barabar Jhoom saw him donning a different avtaar in all these movies. Is it a conscious effort on his part to be different?

“Of course it is and I think every actor is doing that. Great scripts are hard to come by and so you need to be very choosy. I like doing good films each time I decide to do something,” he says.

And will we see him teaming up with his father Dharmendra and brother Sunny Deol again? Is a sequel for Apne in the making?

“Apne was a story by itself. You cannot have a sequel to it but yes three of us are coming together again for a film. Anil Sharma is looking into it. We want to be in a comedy now since in Apne we made people cry a lot,” he adds.

'If I ever become director, I’ll probably lose my mind'

It's no secret that the shy guy is most comfortable with his entire khandan at their Juhu-Vile Parle bungalow.. and is seen only once in a very bluish moon on the party scene.

The family’s Vijayta banner is now returning to film production with Chamku.. just the right time to get him into the chat mode. Over to Bobby Deol in a q and a with Hiren Kotwani.

Why have you been keeping a low profile?
I feel awkward hyping myself. I’ll try but hota nahin hai.

Vijayta Films has returned to film production with Chamku. Why the long gap?
We weren’t organised earlier. So we waited a while. With in-house movies you can explore genres. Chamku is a serious action drama.

But the title gives the impression of a comedy.
No way. Chandrama Singh aka Chamku is brought up by a Naxal after his family is brutally killed.

A westernised dude playing a Naxal?
He starts out as a Naxal and then assists the government in a covert operation. If I was playing a hardcore Naxal, I’d have had to work on my body language and diction.

Your director Kabeer Kaushik’s first film Saher didn’t work commercially.
Kabeer had approached me for Saher but I wasn’t sure then. He rewrote the part for Arshad (Warsi). We were planning to start our own film, I liked this script and we were rolling.

How involved are you in the production?
I’m an apprentice, looking after the post-production. Dad and bhaiya handle the production.

Kabeer Kaushik skipped the music release presumably because he’s miffed with Sunny for interfering in the editing. Kabeer was shooting for Arshad’s first film production in London. My brother is a creative man, he respects those who are creative and will never interfere with their work.

But every producer sits with the editor and discusses what can be edited out. It’s our money at stake, we have a right to our opinions. But it’s always a healthy discussion, never a heated debate.

How come you’re not acting in The Man which Sunny is directing?
How come my brother is not in Chamku? Simple. Chamku is for me, The Man is for bhaiya. Sangeet Sivan is directing a film with dad and me and Sameer Karnik is making another with bhaiyya and me.

There was a film with all the three Deols too?
Anil Sharma is working on the script. We finalised the idea together.

Your father had once said that the Deols think with the heart and not the head.. so they don’t make good businessmen. Do you go with that?
We’re trying to cut all the routes from the heart to the head.. so the mind can work independently. We know this is a business but we can’t change the way we are.

Will you direct some day?
I don’t know. Right now I’m involved with the editing, background music and mixing. I don’t like to control people but a director is the captain of the ship. (Laughs) If I ever become director, I’ll probably lose my mind.. but never say never.

‘Chamku is not a conventional action film’
Rachit Gupta
Posted online: Tuesday , August 12, 2008 at 1218 hrs

BOBBY DEOL gets talking about his latest action offering Chamku, his co-star Priyanka Chopra and his doing more romantic roles and comedies
What is Chamku about?
Chamku is the story of a little boy whose family is killed before his eyes and then he is brought up by a radical Naxalite leader, played by Danny Denzongpa. Chamku’s real name is Chandrama Singh and he grows up to be a man with special combat expertise. The government starts looking for people with such abilities and offers to employ Chamku so that he may help them eliminate serious threats to the Nation.
Chamku chooses this profession without relating to it and it so happens that he meets a girl who makes him fall in love and gives him a reason to break out of this entire system.

Would you call Chamku an action film?
It’s not a conventional action film. It’s more like an action drama.

The title Chamku does not exactly cohere with an action image. Do you think you might have missed a trick over there?
It’s a character-driven film that presents the story of a man forced into doing things he doesn’t want to do. When he’s offered the job he is not given the choice of saying no. And then a woman helps him walk out of his torment. It is a film about this character and we thought about the title and decided Chamku was our best choice.

A Naxalite is not the ideal material for a hero of a commercial film.
That does not matter. The point of the film is to show conflict in the character’s life. The whole Naxal premise is just a way of adding realism to the film. When we started making the film our main objective was to make the film as close to real-life as possible. Using the Naxal and government theme helped us bring that real feel. In fact we never thought about making the film commercially viable. Our priority always remained at making a film that would have impact and be real.

So success at the box-office would not be a matter of concern?
Everyone wants his films to do well. I want Chamku to do well too and be appreciated. But, I have not worked on the film with business in mind. I did Nanhe Jaisalmer for a similar reason. I believed I had a compelling story to work with: Nanhe is one of my all-time favourite films and Chamku too is special.

Chamku is your third film with Priyanka Chopra. Is there a level of comfort you share?
A lot of people don’t realise that Priyanka’s first ever film was with us. She featured in a role with Sunny bhaiyya in The Hero. Naturally she has a soft spot for us. And I did not even offer her the film formally. I just met Priyanka and casually narrated her the script of a film I wanted to work on and she just said “I’ll do it”.

Gupt, Soldier, Humraaz and many of your other hits have been action films. Is the action genre your forte?
I have done films with some well-established and acclaimed filmmakers. And these films were not action films. Barsaat with Rajkumar Santoshi, Kareeb with Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Shakalaka Boom Boom with Suneel Darshan and Yash Raj Pictures’ Jhoom Barabar Jhoom with Shaad Ali. I have done my bit with romance and comedy. But it is just been a case where all the action films I did were made well and all the romantic films that I did weren’t. I would still love to do a wide array of roles.

Does that mean more of romance and comedy?
Yes. Being serious and angry is easy. People have these expressions all the time. I mean, you call up someone any time of the day and nine out of ten times you will hear a serious tone. Making someone laugh or smile is the biggest challenge of an actor’s career and I am always game to take up such tasks.

Three of your biggest hits have come with directors Abbas-Mustan. Are you looking forward for another film with the duo?
Besides Soldier, Ajnabee and Humraaz I have also done a fourth film with them in 2007 called Naqaab. Abbas-Mustan are my favourite directors and I would love to work with them again. In spite of being famous and high-profile filmmakers they are humble and down-to-earth. They treat me like a younger brother and it is that comfort level that translates into good work together.

Heroes and Dostana will be two major releases for you.
I play cameos in both films. Dostana is a wonderful film but Heroes is special. Director Samir Karnik is a good friend of mine and I must thank him for giving me a chance to play Sunny’s brother in the film. I also have Ek - The Power of One lined up for release later this year.

You do enjoy a level of comfort working with brother Sunny and your father.
It is always a pleasure. We are a close-knit family and when we’re working together it brings out the best in us. The success of Apne proved that. Also, working with Dad has an added incentive. He is my father and my biggest critic. So when he finally says, “Good job, Bobby”, there is no better feeling than that.

Bollywood heroes have entered the fitness world with six-packs, sculpted bodies and bulging biceps. Is Bobby Deol planning to hit the gym hard?
That is not my game. I am health-conscious but unfortunately I cannot work out. I have a condition with my shoulders, which first came to my notice when I was shooting for Bichhoo some eight years ago. Since then I have had steroid shots in both my shoulders and that prevents me from heavy-duty workouts. But I am a badminton enthusiast and indulge in sports to keep fit.

Bobby Deol
New Kid on the Block

By Kavita Chhibber

He is very much a chip of the old block. The tall, handsome son of movie legend Dharamendra
and youngest brother of acclaimed actor Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol was launched by his father
in Barsaat. The film also marked the debut of Rajesh and Dimple KhannaЎЇs daughter Twinkle.

While Barsaat failed to make waves, Bobby who set the screen on fire with his histrionics and dancing talent, became the heartthrob of thousands of drooling female fans. While his ascent was marked by a few stumbles along the way, Gupt, Soldier, Ajnabee and recently Humraaz went on to do big business at the box office. 2001 saw him become a father and it is evident that Bobby Deol has also inherited his fatherЎЇs well known humility and unassuming demeanor, explaning that he is very shy and jittery when it comes to speaking with the media.

In an exclusive interview with Kavita Chhibber, Bobby Deol talks of how being part of tinsel town is not what matters most to him.

Were you able to see a lot of dad as a child?
Fortunately I was. I was the youngest and by the time I was born he was already well established in his career. He really regretted the fact that he had not been able to spend a lot of time with my brother and my sisters, so I used to accompany him pretty much everywhere.
The only thing my parents were very particular about was to keep us away from the filmy lifestyle. They never held parties or entertained people from the film industry at home. There are so many good sound values that were handed down to us from my grandparents and parents. My father has always taught us not to bad mouth anyone, to be a down to earth, good human being and true to yourself.
When you are manipulative and dishonest or unethical it comes back to you, and finally there comes a time when you hate yourself for having done things that were unethical but by then it may be too late.
That is why I wanted to have a child quickly once I got married.
It does not matter which profession you are in, most networking parties are so fake. People are fawning over you because you are their man of the moment. My parents were very over protective and concerned that I may end up with friends who may suck up to me because of who I was. Well I actually refused to be presumptuous and I have some great friends who would do any thing for me. The truth about a person usually comes out, and when I do find people who are genuine I love spending time with them.

So do you remember your first shot?
Yes, I played a young Dharmendra in the film Dharamveer. Of course when you are young you have no inhibitions, so I was very confident and charged up, but when the time came to make my debut, I was terribly nervous. I didnЎЇt really take any training or acting classes. I just tried a crash course and gave it up, because it really didnЎЇt teach me much.
I feel acting is instinctive, and like any other profession you get better at what you do with experience and time. As you grow as a person you become more in touch with your emotions and how you channel them on to the screen is the key issue. I am a lot more relaxed now and more comfortable before the camera, but I donЎЇt obsess about camera angles or how good I am looking. Its more important that I am doing a good job of portraying the character I am playing. I donЎЇt rehearse incessantly. It is terribly monotonous after a while. I am very spontaneous. I think spontaneity is refreshing as far as IЎЇm concerned. There are other actors who work incessantly on body language, which camera angle suits them best, and maybe it works for them, but I would rather react naturally and not bog myself with too many technicalities.

How was it working under Sunny. He is the big brother and directed you in Dillagi. Did you take advantage of the fact?
Well it was funny because every time he would admonish or correct me I would throw a tantrum, because he used to do that when I was a kid. I would get yelled at for not doing my homework, and stuff, so I would forget he is directing me and instead all I would remember is my brother is scolding me in front of so many people, but in reality I realize now that knowing me so well, he really brought out my best attributes and he was very relaxed and incredibly patient.

You had a pretty challenging role in Humraaz , in more ways than one. Not only were you pitted against an actor of amazing caliber in Akshaye Khanna, he also seemingly had a more powerful role with so many shades and a vast scope to milk that role. Yet surprisingly every one talked about how you complemented him perfectly. People loved your new look as well. Were there ever any qualms about being upstaged? You also did a great job as the confused husband embroiled in a wife swapping murder mystery with "Ajnabee". Do you think Indian audiences are more accepting of risquЁ¦ movies like that and "Jism"?
The Indian audiences no matter how liberal or open minded you think they have become, are really pretty conservative and traditional in their hearts of hearts and it is hard for them to digest bold subjects. You can see how many films that jumped the bandwagon didnЎЇt do well. Personally IЎЇm pretty conservative and would love to act in films that one can watch with the entire family, but then some times the script or subject is so intriguing that you feel compelled to do it.

You were amazing in Shaheed Bhagat Singh. You even looked like him in the film. How tough was it to do a role like that?
I have grown up listening to stories about our heroes from my grandmother, and specially Bhagat Singh all my life. I loved Manoj KumarЎЇs Bhagat Singh and watched it many times. Sunny Bhaiya always dreamed of doing this role, but when it finally came to me, I was really excited but also terrified at the same time. How do you play a hero who is so larger than life and do justice to his legacy, bring out all that he stood for and not mess up?
It was very tough. You should have seen me when I started shooting. I was a wreck every single day. It was also sad that so many people jumped into making a film on him simultaneously. As a result not one of those films received the attention from the masses it deserved.
It was also very sad that while the shooting was going on there was so much hoopla in the media, commemorating his life and death. This year no one remembered his birth or death anniversary. That is how shallow people are. Not just him, there are so many unsung heroes that lie lost in the annals of history.
It really bothers me. We have become so self absorbed and selfish. I am a father now and IЎЇm afraid for my sonЎЇs future. Today after all that has happened in the past couple of years all I pray for is world peace.

Would you be interested in theatre and cross over cinema? Plays are now getting back into vogue.
I am scared silly even of live stage shows, so IЎЇm not sure about theater, but cross over cinema maybe. While I enjoyed films like Monsoon Wedding and Bend it Like Beckham, I also felt saddened that it made a mockery of India and its traditions. I am not saying there wasnЎЇt any truth in the films, but I wish someone would make a film depicting what is precious and worth treasuring and following in the Indian tradition. I think Bollywood is going through a lot of changes and upheavals, hopefully once things settle down, we will see some good stuff coming out of there.

What is in the works right now?
I am looking forward to completing my friend the late Bunty SoormaЎЇs film, which is now being directed by Vikram Bhatt after his sudden untimely death. I miss him so much. ItЎЇs called Humko Tumse Pyaar Hai, and should be out early next year. I am doing Bardasht, which deals with a relationship between two brothers, there is Anil SharmaЎЇs film with Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar.
IЎЇm really excited about a film by Mani Shankar called Tango Charlie, which deals with the life of a soldier who rises from the lower ranks and the professional and personal challenges he faces and how he evolves as a result. Then there is an action packed love story with Guddu Dhanoa called Kismat, where there are shades of dadЎЇs film Phool aur Pathar.

Which one of your dadЎЇs films is your favorite?
It would be Mera Gaon Mera Desh. It had emotions that were so real. Dad was amazing in it. I would love to do his role in a remake if I could! I think dad also has an amazing sense of comedy as you saw in Chupke Chupke, and pathos as you saw in Satya kam. I said earlier he is one actor who could do any kind of roles, and he never got his due.
People couldnЎЇt see beyond his dazzling looks and physique. But he really didnЎЇt care, because that lack of recognition by the film industry was more than compensated by the adoration and love of millions of fans worldwide.
You should have seen the people when he came for the stage shows in Vancouver ЎЄ people went crazy, removed their turbans and hats to honor him and gave him a standing ovation. I couldnЎЇt care less if I didnЎЇt go down in the annals of film history as the greatest actor alive. If there is anything that I want, its that kind of love from the masses.

Chamku was a challenge for me – Bobby Deol

After Apne Bobby Deol is ready with his Vijeta Films’ project Chamku to hit the silver screens very soon.

The audiences and the Deol family seem to be equally excited about the flick. When asked about what new is there in the film, Bobby, in a jolly mood, said that it was his short hair cut which he had to do for the film. Playing on the serious string the actor adds, "Every story has something or the other similarity with other films but its story, script and treatment are what make it look different. Like, if you see my director Kabir Kaushik's last film "Seher", you will get to know that how differently he made the film which has similarity with many films of the same genre."

It won't be wrong to ask Bobby, the member of the action packed Deol family; about how does he define action in this film? "Only one thing I would say about action that it is very realistic. We have tried to make it lager than life. I have done many action films before so I had to make it different. Thus it was a challenge for me. To be true, today films on these topics are not tried well. People are busy making commercial films nowadays. But this is a kind of film which will touch your heart. After all we all are here to entertain people so we can't fool our audiences,” depicts Bobby.

Where in one hand Bobby is saying that this film is an entertainer then in the other he is calling it an action packed film and then again a realistic one. Having worked in many action films earlier, what did he see in the film that he accepted it? "This film is quite different from my earlier films. I have always done larger than life roles but this one is real to life. This character is not like the one who will jump from the top, no matter how many bullets hit him still he doesn't die or anything like that,” goes on Bobby, "Apart from the film being interesting, it is also a crucial one. Any director will think twice before taking this kind of project in hand.”

The promotion of the film is still not done well and it’s an integral part which makes it difficult for the audiences of how to take the title of the film. Comedy films are in trend now in Bollywood. Audiences are also confused with the title of the film as if it would be a comedy film but the makers as well as the actors are projecting it as an action flick. So how much does the title of the film and its story relate to each other? "I want to say only one thing that all the intelligent audiences will come to know about the film after watching its promos. The title is Chamku because the character' name is Chamku, who is very simple person. His full name is Chandrama Singh," asserts somehow disheartened Bobby.

The actor has acted with Priyanka earlier also. How much difference does he see in her? "Priyanka has done her first film "Big Brother" with Vijeta films and brother Sunny. She is a very good friend of us from the beginning of her career. She is very hard working from the very beginning. She gives her full dedication to any kind of roll. In this film also she has done an amazing job,” explains the actor.

Tell us something about your hills? "(Laughs) those are not my hills. There is a hill near to my farm house where we have shot a song and it won’t be wrong to explain how it’s a discovery of my dad. That place is not less than heaven to me," quips Bobby.

Are the Deols at war again?
20 Aug, 2008 07:00 am ISTlINDIATIMES MOVIES

Questions are being raised at director Kabeer Kaushik's absence at the music launch of Chamku. Indiatimes Movies puts Bobby Deol in the hot seat...

The birth of Chamku...
Kabeer Kaushik wanted me to do his first film. I wasn't so sure what he was capable of. But he did a good job. We have been vying with the idea for working together for a while. We at last a script that both of us liked. Also, Vijayta Films was getting into production all over again, so Sunny bhaiya and dad thought that Chamku would be a good film to produce. And everything worked out well.

Problems with Kabeer...
We have no problems with Kabeer. He was busy with something else on the day of the music launch and was unable to attend it. In fact, he was out of the country. Sometimes dates clash, and multiple professional committments can keep you busy.

Bobby in an action role...
As an actor it's interesting to do different kind of cinema, Apne was different from a Jhoom Barabar Jhoom which was again different from a Nanhe Jaislamer. Chamku is an action film, but it has emotion at its core. I'd say it's as much romantic as it is action-oriented.

What's next?
I'm just back from Miami where I was shooting for Karan Johar's Dostana . It was fun. There are lots of more films with Vijayta films. I'm trying to be a responsible and efficient prodcucer too and a helping hand to dad and bhaiya . So I'm just very busy these days. I feel grown up.

Salman Khan and Shah Rukh are at war these days ...
I keep out of all this, and wouldn't want to comment on it. Please don't make me a part...

Vijay Singh Deol, better known as Bobby Deol, was born in Mumbai. He is the younger son of the veteran actor Dharmendra and Prakash Kaur.

When he was 10 years old he made a very brief appearance in the 1977 movie Dharam Veer, where he played the younger version of his father's character.

His next movie Tango Charlie too flopped in India but it was a massive hit in the USA. The movie earned him mammoth critical acclaim. His latest release this year, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom also didn’t do as well as expected. Though the movie flopped, Bobby Deol received great reviews for his comic acting.

He overshadowed the other actors in the movie with his sheer comic skills. 2007 also saw the release of Apne, in which Bobby Deol co-starred with his father, Dharmendra and older brother Sunny Deol, together for the first time. This movie did quite well.

This strapping Deol is married to Tanya Ahuja and has two sons, Aryamaan and Dharam.

When Bobby forgot to wear his underwear
23 Aug, 2008 06:00 am ISTlINDIATIMES MOVIES

Actor Bobby Deol re-lived his childhood memories when he came to Dus Ka Dum as a contestant. He beat Priyanka Chopra in the knockout round to play the game with Salman Khan.

Both Priyanka & Bobby are gearing up for their latest film release Chamku. The two men had a ball dancing to Main Jat Yamla... from Pratigya the song that immortalized Dharmendra's famous dance steps.
Salman and Bobby brought the house down when they replicated the steps. Bobby recalled how he made his debut in the film when he played the young Dharam.

He revealed a little secret too – that in his excitement of facing the camera for the first time he had forgotten to wear his underwear! Salman just cracked up laughing... and what followed was a series of whistles from the audience!

Bobby: I’m too shy for reality TV

29 Aug 2008

Think elusive, charming and reserved. And you know it’s Bobby Deol we are talking about.

Camera shy (strange considering he’s been an actor romancing the screen for over 13 long years) Bobby may not enjoy posing for our lensman, but he warms up over an interview with us in his hotel room in Ahmedabad. In town to promote his film, Chamku and visit Gitanjali’s showroom on CG Road, the 37 year-old actor confesses that he could do with some “smart marketing”.

If you’ve not seen too much of him on magazine covers or prime time shows waxing eloquent about his films, he puts it down to the fact that all the Deol men (including daddy Dharmendra) are “painfully shy when it comes to talking about ourselves. Our movies need to talk for us. I can’t become suddenly available and be at all the places because that’s expected of actors. That wouldn’t be me.”

Well, given that his last few films have not exactly set the box-office on fire what would he like to do now? Bobby admits that he’s planing to reinvent his career with better scripts and newer directors. “Yes, my last few films haven’t done well. But what can I do? Life has its ups and downs. I guess every one can’t be happy all the time. My work in Jhoom Barabar Jhoom got appreciated but unfortunately nobody offers me comedies. Where are the scripts? Sunny bhaiya is planning to direct again. As producers, we might have burnt our fingers earlier, but our production house will have good films next year.”

Bobby teams up with Sunny Deol, Salman Khan and Mithun Chakraborty in the forthcoming Heroes and an untitled film with his father, directed by Sunny Deol. What has Bobby inherited from his father? “I think my father has given us good upbringing. He has taught us to live life with its ups and downs and be true to ourselves. He has taught us to be humble.”
Bobby is vocal about the fact that his father never got his due as a legendary actor. “My dad had done some great films like Satyakam, Dharam Veer, Sholay but he was never taken seriously as an actor. Amitji is a fantastic actor but even my dad can be offered meaningful roles like the one he did in Life in a Metro...”

Although many actors have turned to television, Bobby has no such plans. “Yes, reality shows are the present and future, but I am too shy. Did you see me with Priyanka Chopra on a reality show recently? Did you see how nervous I was?”

Father to two sons Aryaman and Dharam, Bobby has starry dreams for them too. “I would love them to be actors, but right now, they are just kids who love junk food and spending time with me.”

On his second visit to Ahmedabad, Bobby confesses that he finds the people of Gujarat very loving and warm.
His phone starts ringing at this point, it’s time to let Bobby be himself again!

Priyanka Chopra is a sweetheart, says Bobby Deol

Actor Bobby Deol says he would've been in a fix if Priyanka Chopra hadn't agreed to play a deglamourised role in his recently released home production Chamku, in which he has an author-backed role.

" Priyanka is a sweetheart. She plays a deglamourised role in Chamku. Most heroines wouldn't want to get into that deglamourous space, especially in a film that's driven by my character. But she agreed," Bobby told IANS.

While Bobby plays the title role of a Maoist in the film, Priyanka , who is his love interest in the movie, is a schoolteacher and is seen mainly in plain chiffons.

Bobby's elder brother Sunny too had serious problems finding a female lead for his home production, The Man. It was Shilpa Shetty who came to Sunny's rescue.

Apart from Priyanka , Bobby is thankful to Riteish Deshmukh who plays a cameo in Chamku.

"Riteish was very sweet. He agreed to play the small part of my friend in Chamku without a second thought at a time when he's busy doing major projects," said Bobby who had once agreed to play Riteish's elder brother in Vikram Bhatt's Bardasht.

Bobby has now another problem at hand. After losing 10 kg for his role in Chamku, he is now heavily into chocolates. And his family is very worried.

"It wasn't easy for me to lose weight. But once I made up my mind, I did it. But now I'm trying to make back that weight and bingeing on chocolates. I'm even stealing them from my sons," laughed Bobby.

More dilemmas - Bobby had to cut his hair really short for the part.

"I was reluctant. But it was one of the pre-conditions for doing Chamku. I was wondering if I should grow it back to the way it was. I've decided to stick to short hair. I feel I can play more characters this way. Also, my hair dries after a shower even before I towel it. I also don't have to use any hair product."

Released Friday, the brutal film about oppression, injustice and Maoist rebellion was more in the news for its unusual title.

Commenting on that, Bobby said: "I thought Chamku was just a working title. But it's my character's name. And it completely fits in."

Bobby plays a guy from Bihar, who becomes a Naxalite after his family is brutally murdered.

"I play a guy who never gets choices in life. He has no beliefs, no desires until he meets a woman who makes him realise he has the right to happiness."

Bobby recently appeared on the reality show Dus Ka Dum, being hosted by Salman Khan, and says it was his first ever appearance on any such show.

"It was my first reality show, and with Priyanka In the beginning I was nervous. I've known Salman for years. He used to take me horse riding and for bike stunts. In 2000 and 2003 we did stage shows together. He made me comfortable on the show. So did Priyanka ," he said.

Bobby Deol: the nervous terroristAnil Sinanan, Times Bollywood Film Critic
“The word Chamku keeps you guessing. That’s why we liked the title!” Bobby Deol smiled when asked to explain the odd title of his latest film ‘Chamku’, out today. Bobby, brother of actor Sunny and son of veteran A list hero Dharmendra, plays Chaman or ‘Chamku’, an Indian tribal Naxalite terrorist and the film follows his journey towards redemption.

The action entertainer is produced by elder brother Sunny who, in typical Bollywood fashion on the eve of release, proclaims that “Chamku is different” as he thinks that most movies made today are just filled with song and dance “item numbers.”

Bobby is in desperate need of a hit as most of his recent films have crashed at the box-office. He admits being nervous: “Every actor, no matter how much he denies it, is nervous before a release. Waiting for the outcome of the film can be nerve wracking.” Do not expect to find Bobby in Bollywood this weekend: he intends to go away from Mumbai as he usually does whenever one of his films releases.

Why Bobby hates BPOs

7 Sep 2008

Bobby Deol may be popular for portraying angry young man characters in his films, but in real life he thinks before he speaks and does anything. And that’s what he expects the youngsters to do as well.

Bobby, who was in Delhi with bhaiya Sunny to promote their latest film Chamku, talked at length about what surprises him about the attitude of today’s generation.

The BPO industry is what he thinks has spoilt the youngsters in India’s metropolitan cities. He said, “I am amazed to see children, fresh out of school or college, leaving at night for work. Money spoils everyone. Having and spending pocket money during school and college days is okay but earning and splurging money at a young age is something else. Having substantial amount of money at their disposal does not make them smart, it spoils them.”

And why does he think the youngsters are spoilt? “It is clear by the way they live their lives. They work during unearthly hours and sleep when others work. But the worst part of it all is that they they don’t have any long-term goals. They live for the weekends. The mantra of their lives is to work hard and partying harder. Looking forward to weekends to go pubbing with friends or colleagues is not the way youngsters should be living their lives.”

And whatever happened to being self-reliant at a young age? “Do you think such jobs prepare them for the future?” he asks and adds, “I may sound a little orthodox but I think the present generation is busy aping the West. I don’t have a problem with that. Be western in your thinking and outlook but don’t aspire to be a westerner. Don’t live their life. Leave behind the Sam or Rosy that you become while talking to the overseas clients and get back to being Sanjay or Rachna after work.” That’s quite thoughtful of you, Bobby.

Home productions allow me to do my kind of films: Bobby Deol

Sep 12. 2008

Mumbai, (IANS) After "Chamku", Bobby Deol will feature in two more home productions and says the films made by his own banner gives him a chance to play the kind of roles he wishes to play.

"I have realised home productions give me the choice to do the kind of films I want to do. Outside producers only come to you with the films that they believe in," Bobby told IANS in an interview.

Bobby has become pro-active - he had been a part of the music sitting, pre-production, post-production of his recently released "Chamku", which was produced by his banner Vijayta Films Pvt. Ltd.

"It's ('Chamku') my baby. And I want to do this more often. It's with my new film that I've become involved with our home production. I was involved with its shooting and post-production. I was like an apprentice on the job, learning about how to produce a film. My brother believes I've been lazy," said Bobby.

Like his father Dharmendra and elder brother Sunny, Bobby is now fully into family concerns. But he is not ready to direct a film yet.

"I've been part of this industry for years. And my brother is into direction. I don't feel ready for it. I wish I was."

What Bobby is ready for is another film with his father.

"There's no other way we can come together on screen. Sangeeth Sivan is directing it. It's the story of a father and son discovering each other during a journey.

"Then I'm doing an action-comedy with Sunny Deol. But it won't be just fun. We brothers will share a lot of emotional moments. We can't come together without sharing emotions. That will be directed by Samir Karnik, who is another of my favourite directors. I've done two films with Samir and we Deols are very impressed by his work."

Asked about outside films, Bobby said: "Though I'm open to outside offers it's definitely more productive to do home productions where everything is under our control. And we have three in-house actors."

Dharmendra recently underwent knee surgery in the US.

"And he has recovered very well. I'm dying to work with him. We start in October end."

If I ever become director, I’ll probably lose my mind'

Mumbai, August 06, 2008

You have a lot of confidence in Sameer Karnik. Apparently, you even invested in Nanhe Jaisalmer.
I believe in him. Nanhe Jaisalmer was a sweet film.. We have another film with Dwij Yadav coming up, Roshan, later this year. But I haven’t invested in either films.

Was it because of Sameer Karnik that you agreed to do a cameo in Heroes?
I did it because I liked the subject.. and because Sunny bhaiya and I are playing brothers.

In Ek – The Power of One you’re playing an assassin.
(Laughs) I’m the industry’s killer, I’ve played an assassin in so many films. But it was good fun to match wits with a cop like Nana (Patekar). He would often talk about dad.

Yours was the best performance in Jhoom Barabar Jhoom. Why aren’t you doing more films with Yash Raj?
I’ve no idea. During Jhoom.. I was asked about issues between my brother and Yash Raj. Issues happen.. people don’t live with them. You forgive and forget. If they want to work with me again, they’ll offer me another film.

Your dad’s just made a comeback..
(Interrupts) Dad never went away. He did some films that weren’t all that great. Finally we told him to relax, we’d take care of everything. That’s when he started doing good films and people started talking about a comeback.

You’ve become very selective too?
I can’t do 10 films just for big money. I’d rather hang around with my kids.

How old are your sons? Are they interested in the movies?
The elder is seven, the younger one will turn four this year. When I was a child, I never looked at dad as an actor. He was my hero. I don’t think my kids look at me as actor either.. but they get excited when we go out and people recognise me.

You’ve named your younger son after your dad. Is Dharam like his grandfather?
I wanted to name my older son after dad but everyone wondered how I could call my son by my dad’s name. I reasoned that everyone addressed dad as papa. When my second son was born, I decided to call him Dharam. I’m so proud of my dad. And it’s cute when he’s called Chhota Dharampa.

You were a party person once. But marriage and fatherhood have turned you into a complete homebody.
When you’re growing up you want to experience life because that’s what all your friends are doing. But when I go to a nightclub now, there are only youngsters around. It’s not as if I don’t enjoy partying, I just don’t enjoy it so much now. When you have kids, you want to spend more time with them. If you can’t shoulder the responsibilities, why have kids? When you’re a parent you have to behave like one. You can’t be a teenager all your life.

Your wife Tanya runs a furniture business. Do you give her suggestions?
Every time I suggest something, she asks, “What are you saying? That won’t look nice at all.” Then I’m like, “Okay , fine.” She’s good at what she does and is doing very well.

Does she still style your outfits?
After the kids, it’s too much work. They are a 24-hour job. She does tell me if she doesn’t like something. And I can’t go shopping without her. I don’t know what to buy when I’m alone. But shopping with women requires lots of patience.. they like to check everything, so many times.

You had ventured into the restaurant business in partnership with friends. Any more plans after you sold it off?
It’s not my cup of tea. Right now, I’m only interested in making movies.

В принципе ничего особо нового, но все равно приятно..

Bobby Deol is setting up a production empire
By Subhash K. Jha, November 17, 2008 - 14:19 IST

After losing ten kgs for his role in Chamku, Bobby Deol is now heavily into chocolates. "It wasn't easy for me to lose weight. But once I made up my mind, I did it. But now I'm trying to make back that weight and binging on chocolates."

Like his dad and elder brother, Bobby Deol is now fully into family concerns. In fact the younger Deol scion is so much into production now, he wishes he had got into before.

"It's with my film Chamku that I've become involved with our home production. I've been totally involved with its shooting and post-production. I'm like an apprentice on the job, learning about how to produce a film. My brother believes I've been lazy. But I now realize home productions give me the choice to do the kind of films I want to do. Outside producers only come to you with the films that THEY believe in. For Chamku, I was part of the music sitting, pre-production, post-production. It's my baby."

Bobby now wants to assist directors and get more proficient with the technique of filmmaking. "I've been part of this industry for years. And my brother is into direction. I don't feel ready for it. I wish I was."

What Bobby is ready for is another film with his father Dharmendra. "It's a father-son story. There's no other way we can come together on screen. Sangeeth Sivan is directing it. It's the story of a father and son discovering each other during a journey. Then I'm doing an action-comedy with Sunny Deol. But it won't be just fun. We brothers will share a lot of emotional moments We can't come together without sharing emotions. That will be directed by Samir Karnik who's another of my favourite director's right now. I've done two films with Samir and we Deols are very impressed by his work."

Sangeeth Sivan and Samir Karnik are part of a new set of directors the Deols want to cultivate, like they once nurtured the talents of Gurinder Chadha and Raj Kumar Santoshi.

Says Bobby, "Though I'm open to outside offers, it's definitely more productive to do home productions where everything is under our control. And we have three in house actors."

Dad Dharmendra recently underwent knee surgery in the US. "And he has recovered very well. I'm dying to work with him."

Now it's Bobby's turn to get hurt

Friday, November 21, 2008

The actor hurt his knee when he was attending his cousin’s birthday, writes Rashmi
Hemrajani

Just weeks after Hrithik Roshan got the spring back in his steps after being laid off from the dance floor for injuring his knee, it’s Bobby Deol’s turn. The actor hurt his knee when he was attending the birthday party of his uncle.

He says, “Nothing to worry. It is just that a few days ago I was at Dara Uncle’s birthday party. My cousins tried to lift me and I hurt my knee in the process. But nothing’s serious and I will be back on my feet again. Usually I don’t party. I hate it. But it was a family occasion and we had great fun.

He also has “little fever and throat infection” but says that he won’t let it affect his work.
Talk veers towards the latest hit Dostana, where we see Bobby waxing his chest hair. It was painful, isn’t it?

“Yes (it did pain!).
I don’t know how people do it every time. Now-a-days, there is a lot of emphasis on looks. I have seen a lot of young boys take steroids to put on muscles. But I would like to warn them that they could have lung and liver problems. And they must seek some professional help.”

In Dostana, we see Bobby play the role of an ideal dad. So, how would he rate himself as a dad off screen?

He replies, “I try and spend more time with my children, I want to establish a strong bond with them.”

We tell Bobby that he has managed to keep himself away from controversies for quite sometime now…

“I don’t like to let media into my personal life. I know of a lot of newcomers who do that and it a very sad attitude towards life.”

Bobby is now concentrating on working on the film being directed by his own brother. He says, “My brother (Sunny) is directing a movie titled The Man which also stars dad (Dharmendra) and Shilpa Shetty. I have realised that home productions give me the choice to do the kind of films I want to do. Outside producers only come to you with the films that they believe in.”

Mr Right

Nov 28, 2008

First Yash Raj’s Jhoom Barabar Jhoom and now Karan Johar’s Dostana. You are increasingly being seen in outside banners. What prompted the change?
Years ago, I did get offers for special appearances in big hits made by these banners but I couldn’t do them. Basically, I don’t do special appearances. But Karan and I go back a long way. When Tarun came and narrated the script to me, I thought it was a role of substance. But I must confess, I didn’t expect this kind of a reaction. After Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, I have realised that a cameo can make a difference if it’s interesting, and you need not be the protagonist.

So, you have got a positive response.
Definitely. I played a dignified level-headed man, the kind women would fall in love with, and sure enough many girls have come and told me that they would love to have a man like me. In the film, though, John and Abhishek tried to take me for a ride with their pranks (laughs).

Looks like you had fun shooting for the film.
I know Abhishek since childhood. Priyanka and I have done so many films together. John is a friend and together we had lot of fun. Even the kid was a natural. He reminded me of my own sons.

What’s with the short hair in the film?
That was my look in Chamku and since I was shooting for that, I decided to continue with the same hairstyle. The styling of suits has been done by Aki Narula.

Aren’t you doing a film Cheers! with your father?
Yes, it is being directed by Sangeeth Sivan. It’s about a father-son relationship. The two of us are on a road trip and during the journey we deal with all the problems that are common to every father and son and in the process get closer to each other.

Nanhe Jaisalmer didn’t do well, neither did Naqaab or Chamku.
One can’t really predict which film will work and which won’t. You choose films depending on the script, characters and what is being made at that time. Nanhe Jaisalmer and Naqaab were interesting films but maybe something was lacking in them. Sometimes when a film does well, you wonder how this worked when it wasn’t such a good film and sometimes a film looks good to you, but doesn’t work at the box-office. Maybe I should have chosen different roles.

Which are your next releases?
I have Ek, an action film with Nana Patekar and Roshan, which is a meaningful film, something on the lines of Nanhe Jaisalmer.

'Abhay Deol is a great cartoonist'

23 Mar, 2009

Abhay Deol received a lot of compliments for his performance in Dev D. The youngest of the Deol hunks made his khandaan proud with his remarkable performance. And Dimpy, as Abhay is lovingly called, will be happy to know that his bade bhaiya Bobby Deol is completely fida oer his performance. We recently met Bobby, who was extremely happy with Abhay’s success.

“I loved Dev D, it’s awesome. Abhay has given a superb film and I am so proud of him.” Bobby couldn’t stop praising Abhay. “Dimpy is a man of his own mind. He The kind of films he is doing, others would have been very scared to do. He has created a mark for himself; I’m happy for him!”

“Abhay is very talented. As a child he used to paint. He was a good cartoonist,” informs Bobby, “It’s nice that he is doing films appealing to today’s youth. Thanks to the multiplex culture, that his kind of cinema is being appreciated.”

So would he like to share screen space with Abhay? “Why not! If we get a right script and interesting roles, we will of course be seen together. But nothing unique has crossed our paths yet,” says Bobby Deol, whose Ek, The Power of One is all set to hit the theatres.

Bobby: I'm just talking about my family

25 Mar 2009

No personal questions!” we were told before we got down to interviewing actor Bobby Deol.

Now that'll be one drab interview, we thought, only to be proved wrong. Read between the lines to understand what we mean...

How has he been, we ask and get a “Fine, thank you!” in reply. So we ask him about his forthcoming film and his role in it. “I'm doing an action oriented role in this film after a very long time. I play an assassin who doesn't have a family, but eventually falls in line. It's an interesting character.”

But doesn't it sound like any other rehashed Bollywood movie, the bad guy turning good? “Isn't nearly every Hindi film a rehash of some movie or the other?” he counters. “Firstly I prefer saying Hindi cinema coz I'm against the term Bollywood,” he reiterates. “Every love story or Hindi film has the same story, but what makes it different is the treatment it's given. Much depends on how it is stylised, how the characters are moulded, and how the story is treated.”

Bobby has been in the industry for quite a few years but ask him how come he has not been able to create the kind of hype that his contemporaries have and he he says, “I don't know! I have always put in my best but the answer lies in the film clicking at the box office. It's not just the actor who's responsible for a film becoming a hit. A whole lot of work and people are involved in it. But I wouldn't want to blame anyone. It's sheer luck I guess.”

He has a star father and a fairly successful actor Sunny Deol as Bada Bhaiyya. So, does he take any help from them in choosing his roles? “They are always there for me. They are my strength. I'm lucky to have such an illustrious family. We love each other and have immense respect for each other.”

And what about sisters Esha and Ahana Deol? “I'm just talking about my family, no one else,” is the curt reply we get. Well seems to be some problem there, specially since both Papa and Sunny Bhaiyya seem to be rather protective towards the two girls!

As we wonder about that and not taking any further chance of the actor clamming up, we move on to a more affable topics. How do his wife Tania and kids react to his movies? “They watch all my films and give me their honest opinions. Tania is my biggest critic.”

So what is his dream role? “Any role that others would dream of doing,” says Bobby, whose next film Cheers is with Papa Dharmendra. “I’m looking forward to the movie. It’ll start rolling in April and it's based on generation gap between father and son. It’s an emotional comedy.

Bobby also happens to be one actor who has successfully avoided all controversies over years. Ask him how he manages that and he says, “I’m a simple person and I lead a simple life. I share a good rapport with nearly everyone in the industry and that I guess is the reason.”

No Fear

Despite recent box office failures, Bobby Deol is hopeful that his upcoming movies will change the equation

People loved your short crop in Dostana. So why then have you decided to go back to your long locks?
When I cut my hair short, people came up to me and ask me to sport my hair longer. That’s what I am doing now.

With Help, it’s the first time you are doing a supernatural thriller. How much does horror as a genre interest you?
Horror as a genre wouldn’t be my first pick from a movie library. As a teenager, I would have my eyes and ears shut while watching a horror movie. But then, it is a great genre to watch when with a gang of friends. Earlier, I wasn’t offered a role in a horror film. Now, when I was given the script, I really liked it and decided to do it. Horror keeps you on your toes.

Directors and crew members of previous spooky films have always had outlandish experiences whilst shooting for the same. Did you experience any such things?
I don’t really believe in ghosts, so I wasn’t scared. But when we were shooting for Help in a former French Colony in Mauritius, there were moments of spookiness experienced by crew members. But then, that tends to happen when you are shooting in a dark, dingy room or an empty street, and you are constantly being updated on the story.

But this genre hasn’t quite hit a chord with the Indian audiences. Do you see this as a risk?
You cannot predict what works. Although a horror film has limited audience as compared to other films, people will watch it if it excites them.

Your last few films have been box office failures. Would you blame your choice of movies?
One can’t just blame one’s choice. Sometimes the script undergoes changes. At other times, the production house delays the release. You can’t really point to one thing. There have been instances when big banner films have tanked and smaller films have done brilliantly. But I stand by all the choices I have made.

Next up is Yamla Pagla Deewana with your brother Sunny Deol and father Dharmendra. What was the experience like?
We stay together, so it wasn’t much of a family bonding. But whenever we come together, it is always a blast. I am most comfortable working with family because then I can be myself. Earlier, when we did Apne, I was a little under pressure because it was my first film with dad. But this time around, it was quite a party on the sets.

According to you, who is the best looking of the three Deols?
Of course my dad. He has been one of the best looking men in the industry for a long, long time.

You also have a comedy film in Thank You. With many different genres, are you trying to resurrect your career?
I am always trying my hand at different genres, be it action, thriller or comedy. But I don’t try to control the pace of my career, because how much ever you try, you cannot. Something that works today may not work tomorrow.

Action thrillers have worked well for you in the past. Do you have any lined up?
Maybe later on. Right now, I’m busy with YPD.

You have always admired indie cinema. Don’t you want to try your hand at it?
Definitely. I’m waiting for a good script to come my way.

Deolia, спасибо за интересный материал - я тоже думаю, рейтинг вовсе не всегда показатель качества фильма.
Deolia, Thanks for the interesting text. I too think that the income of a film not always corresponds to quality of a film.

Fifteen years on, Bobby Deol finds `no guarantee` for hits

Updated on Wednesday, July 21, 2010, 09:31 IST

Mumbai: For the first time in his 15-year-old career, Bobby Deol of the romance and action movies has attempted to do a supernatural thriller - a not-so-popular genre. But the actor is taking his chances, saying there is "no guarantee what will work and what won`t".

"It`s not only horror films that didn`t work this year. There are many others that didn`t either. There is no guarantee what will work and what won`t," Bobby, the younger son of Bollywood veteran Dharmendra, told reporters.

"Every Friday when your film is about to release, you are scared, you don`t want to be around because you don`t know what`s going to happen," he said.

Bobby`s ghost film is titled "Help" and it has been directed by debutant Rajeev Viran who narrates the story of a malevolent spirit that refuses to leave the human world. While the actor will be seen as a successful horror film director in the movie, Mugdha Godse will feature as his wife.
The film is slated to hit the screens Aug 13.

This year saw a number of horror films hitting the big screen like "Click", starring Shreyas Talpade and Sneha Ullal; Ram Gopal Varma`s "Phoonk 2"; Aditya Narayan-starrer "Shaapit"; Purab Kohli and Arjan Bajwa`s "Hide & Seek"; and "Rokkk" that had Udita Goswami and Tanushree Dutta. But they all scared the audiences away.

In real life, Bobby doesn`t believe in evil spirits. "As an adult I don`t believe in spirits and ghosts, but as a child such stories used to interest me and even scare me sometimes," said the 43-year-old.

"When I was a little kid, my cousin used to tell me ghost stories. Even when my maids used to talk about such stuff, I used to get interested and would force them to make me a part of their conversation. Sometimes though they scared me."

Usually seen in romantic and action movies, Bobby agreed to do "Help" because he felt it was time to experiment with a different genre.

"When I heard the subject, it sounded interesting; so I decided to give it a shot. End of the day, as an actor you want to experience different things. I have done this for the first time; now let`s see how it fares," he said.

So wasn`t he sceptical about working with an actress who is relatively new in the industry?

"No, not at all. I`m not one of those people. In fact, most of my films are with heroines who are relatively new in the industry. What is important is that the person suits the character and Mugdha was perfect for this role," he informed.

Horror is not the only thing on Bobby`s plate at the moment. The actor, who made his debut with 1995 film "Barsaat", is working on two more films - "Yamla Pagla Deewana" and "Thank You".

While "Yamla Pagla Deewana" will see him reuniting on screen with his father Dharmendra and elder brother Sunny, in "Thank You" he will be seen with Sonam Kapoor and Akshay Kumar.

I had a massive fight with Preity Zinta and Rani Mukerjee: Bobby Deol Never mind whether the film is a hit or a dud at the box office, BOBBY DEOL tells Jyothi Venkatesh that it was like a big picnic working on a horror film like Help in Mauritius.

Tell me what your film Help is about.
Basically it is a horror film. It has been directed by Rajiv Virani, who had earlier made films like My Bollywood Bride and The Whisperers. It is for the first time in my career that I have acted in a horror film.

I play Vik, the role of a maker of a horror film. Though Vikram Bhatt has been making horror films of late, I swear that the character that I play in the film has got nothing to do with Vikram Bhatt.

It is about how a husband and wife have some misunderstanding, because she presumes that her husband is having an affair with his heroine on location.

How we go to Mauritius when we come to know that my wife's father is not well and things get sorted out eventually is what the film is all about.

What appealed to you about the film? What I like about the film is that the whole package looks scary. The film is about how paranormal forces unleash scare. It was quite a difficult task to relate to the role because I have not seen such forces in my real life. During my college days I had heard about stove talking. I think it is all rubbish.

Didn't you think it's downmarket to do a horror film? You have to make your own choices and work in life. I like horror films. Gone are the days when we used to make tacky horror films and people in the industry used to look down at them. Times have changed drastically.

It is like a big picnic watching a horror film now. Raaz was the beginning of a good horror film era. Ram Gopal Varma has done quite a few and they have done well. Earlier we did not know Indian horror films have a big market abroad. If you make a good horror film, you definitely have something.

Do you like horror films?Yes. I do make it a point to watch horror films, though I do not let my kid watch them. In recent times, I liked the film Others. It was an emotional film about a mother and a child.

I also saw Inception, though that's not exactly a horror film. I think it is a great concept and it has been made well. Every film has an audience, if it is well made. If people like a scary horror film, others also will go and see.

You are working with Mughda Godse for the first time!Yes, yes... I am working with Mughda Godse for the first time. She is a hard working model turned actress.

Today every model is turning into an actress. Everyone who is acting in the film, except Mughda and I, is working for the first time.

It is like you are walking into a big house where you know no one. You can call me a senior. The generation younger than us is changing drastically. The new generation thinks that it is a new song but we call it a remix.

How would you look back at your journey as an actor till date?It has been a fun journey. It has been a very exciting journey for me as an actor right from Barsaat till Help. I think I have grown tremendously. Today I am more mature. Life is an experience and you learn every day, whether you are an actor or for that matter just a normal human being. I do not mean to say that actors are not normal human beings (Laughs).

On what basis do you sign on the dotted lines for any film of yours?
First, I see whether the producer will be able to do justice to the film. If I am convinced that he can, the next thing that I see is whether the script holds my interest.

After I ensure that the producer is right and the script is good, I insist on the right star cast, because casting is the most important aspect of any film.

Though I have mostly acted in solo starrers including Help, I have no qualms about acting in multi-starrer films, because nowadays, it is the question of more the merrier and people prefer watching multi star casts.

Are you and Sunny playing real life roles as the sons of Dharmendra in your home production Yamla Pagla Deewana?Yes. Papa is playing my reel life papa too in the film and Sunny bhaiyya is playing my brother. There is no other way that people will look at us. It is a fun packed action comedy with accent on emotion. It was nice working with papa after a long time.

Which other film are you doing now, besides Yamla Pagla Deewana?I am doing Thank You with Akshay Kumar and Sonam. The film is an out and out zany comedy!

Can you name five best films of yours?
Dillagi was my best. Please do not restrict me to only five best films of mine. I will also name my films like Apne, Gupt, Soldier, Badal, Bichu, Humraaz and last but not the least Jhoom Barabar Jhoom too. I also did a film about a certain freedom fighter, which came at the wrong time when every other person made a film about the same freedom fighter (Laughs).

Who are your favorite co-stars?All my co-stars are my favorite co-stars. Though Preity Zinta and I had a big fight, later on we made up and became good friends. The same was the case with Rani Mukerjee.

Though we had a massive fight while we were shooting, we made up with each other and ended up becoming good friends. I think the best way to be a good friend is to fight with your co-stars. (Laughs). In recent times, Priyanka is a sweet heart.

Which are the directors with whom you would love to work?Since I want to work with all good directors, I do not want to name any one particular director.

People ask me why I do not send feelers to directors when I come to know that they are about to launch their films to take me on in their films. Mujhse hota nahin... That is why I have a secretary.

Stars these days are ready to appear on television. Do you have any such plans?I am always being offered some show or the other but I keep on saying no, because I have my own reservations.

I am Sunny's third son: Bobby Deol
IANS, Dec 24, 2010

This family is actually 'yamla pagla deewana' where the youngest son Bobby Deol is still treated as a buddy by dad Dharmendra, while his elder brother Sunny treats him as his third son.

"Bhaiya (Sunny Deol) treats me like his son. He looks after me and always says I don't have two sons, I have three sons and you are the third one," Bobby, who will turn 44 in January next year, told IANS.

"He is like that. He is very caring. He's very loving. He's like a father and would do everything to keep everybody happy in the house," he added.

Sunny, 54, has two sons Karan, 19, and Rajvir, 16, with wife Pooja.

As for Dharmendra, Bobby says he is no less than a friend. "In real life, I definitely respect my dad a lot. He is someone who keeps entertaining everyone at home. It's fun being at home with him. He has a great sense of humour and he often comes up with his jokes and makes us laugh."

After the success of 2007 "Apne", the trio of Sunny, Bobby and Dharmendra is once again returning to the big screen to tickle the funny bones of the audience as three crazy guys in the aptly titled "Yamla Pagla Deewana".

The movie also marks Dharmendra's 50 years in the industry. And Bobby says the film is a celebration of his dad's achievements.

Bobby started his career with 1995 "Barsaat" and went on to do films like "Gupt: The Hidden Truth", "Soldier", "Humraaz", "Nanhe Jaisalmer" and "Dostana".

Bobby is not a party hopper any more and prefers to spend time with friends and family. "I prefer to stay away from the limelight. I am more of a home boy. I love being at home with my friends and my family. I used to go out a lot earlier, but it is something that drains you out. At this moment, I don't feel like doing those things," he said.

"I spend time at home with my kids. Moreover, I live in a joint family where all of us including my chacha (uncle) are together, so I love being at home," he added.

While both Sunny and Bobby have made a mark in mainstream cinema, another Deol scion Abhay is making waves in offbeat films with his outstanding performances in movies like "Dev D" and "Oye Lucky Lucky Oye".

Bobby is proud of his cousin's success and is looking forward to working with him in future. "I am so proud of him (Abhay), he's doing so well. If he wasn't an actor, he would have been a lawyer because he loves to argue and I seriously can't do that. He has a mind of his own. He is very fixed about his decisions and it has worked for him. He's a great actor who can do romance, comedy, everything," he said.

So when could fans see all the four Deols together in a film?
"It is difficult to come across scripts that could incorporate all of us. It took so many years for me, dad and bhaiya to come in 'Apne'. To get all four of us together is not easy. We can't take any script and come out with a film. It has to be a script that we enjoy. Definitely in future you would see Abhay and me working together," he said.

Bobby is currently busy with two films - Anees Bazmi's "Thank You" and Abbas Mastan's "Players" - and is open to doing offbeat movies.

"Every time you do a film, the hangover lingers and you look forward to doing it because you have been through that process. But as an actor you want to do something different. I would love to do an offbeat film if I come across something that suits me and I suit the subject," he said.

REAL LIFE EQUATION WITH DAD LED TO ONSCREEN COMFORT : BOBBY
Wednesday, December 29, 2010 (Mumbai)

Actor Bobby Deol says his on-screen chemistry with father Dharmendra in their upcoming movie 'Yamla Pagla Deewana' has come out well because of the relationship the two share in real life.

"Since I am the youngest in the family... I fool around with Papa. But, I don't behave stupidly. In the film, it is because of him, that our chemistry is amazing," Bobby told PTI.

In the film, he said they play the characters of thugs. "Even though they are father and son, they are friends. They do everything together and can talk anything under the sun," he added.

Bobby who celebrates his 44th birthday next month, said doing comedy was not an easy task.

"I have not done comedies much. However, the situations in this film were great. It is an entertainer which will take the audience back to the Manmohan Desai lost-and-found genre," he added.

Speaking about elder brother Sunny, he said even 'Bhaiyya' has not done comedies.

"He is the toughest guy in the film industry. Here, he is a tough guy put in a comical situation. Comedy in 'Yamla Pagla Deewana' is situational and I am confident that audiences would react positively to the film," he added.

The actor said he had put his heart and soul in the film and is extremely excited and anxious as the D-Day nears for the release on January 14.

"The positive feedback over the promos is making us feel that we have a good product in hand," he said.

"We have never promoted our movies in such a big way. Hope we don't fall short," he said.

Apart from 'Yamla Pagla Deewana', Bobby is currently shooting for Anees Bazmi's 'Thank You' with Akshay Kumar and Sonam Kapoor and Abbas Mustan's 'Players' with Abhishek Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor, Bipasha Basu and Neil Nitin Mukesh.

He said he has no qualms of working in multi-starrers. "It is the trend of today," he added.

Bobby said he is optimistic that 'Yamla Pagla Deewana' would bring good days again for the Deols. "My brother treats me as his son. We share a close bond. He wishes the best for me and I do the same for him," he added.

Bobby Deol: "People are fake... They bullshit at parties

Filmfare catches Bobby Deol in an explosive mood

- With the success of YPD, are you now more comfortable with the idea of being seen and heard?
I don’t think so. I still feel uneasy when I attend functions, I can’t walk the ‘red carpet’. For me, it’s torture because I don’t know how to react when the press asks me for bytes. But I’m trying. I sometimes do stop and talk. Also, in an interview, I can only talk about my movies. I can’t answer questions like, ‘What do you think about this and that?’ That’s why I don’t tweet at all. I was forced to go on Facebook by my friends but I avoid it as much as I can.

- Bobby DeolWhat are you memories as a kid?
I was very quiet and naive. I hated school till the eighth standard. I never understood the theory of going to school. I was like ‘Why are they so strict?’ But while I didn’t study too hard, I never broke rules. I used to be out there playing games. I grew up in this house, which is as old as I am. I used to play cricket every day. For me, growing up was basically about playing sports. Every morning, dad (Dharmendra) used to play badminton. So I’ve been playing badminton ever since!

- How were you as a student?
(Grins) Terrible. I never got great marks. For me, it was always like the last five overs of a one-day cricket match where you have to win. So, you have to study during those last five days before the exam. But today I want my sons, Aryaman (10) and Dharam (6) to study. I don’t want them to view it as a burden. It’s very important to be educated.

- How is your equation with your sons different from the one you had with your dad?
Every generation undergoes change. My dad was the sole earner. His main aim in life was to ensure all of us were comfortable. He used to do three-four shifts a day. He’d return home late at night. I used to stay up till he’d come back. Because I was the youngest and my dad missed being a part of our daily lives, I’d hang around him all the time. I used to bunk school only to accompany him for shoots. I’d tell him, "Papa, I don’t want to go to school. Can I come with you?" He’d take me along. I’d even go on outdoors with him during my holidays. I loved being with him.

- What are the things you like doing with your sons?
We play cricket together. We also talk about music. They like dancing to hit songs. So, they keep entertaining me. My younger son Dharam loves dancing to Munni badnam hui! He even copies Malaika’s (Arora Khan) moves! Both my sons love Salman Khan because he’s very good with kids. They love to interact with him.

- Bobby DeolYou’ve had a stable marriage. What goes into making a marriage successful?
There is no formula. All I can say is I’m very blessed that I met Tania. I love her, she’s amazing. She takes all my rubbish and still loves me so much. We are loving and caring but we fight a lot too.

- What is your equation with Abhay?
As he’s the youngest, he was always bullied by us. He was always left out of everything we did. We’d say, “You can’t be part of this. Tu chota hai (you are too small).” He became a loner. That’s how Dimpy (Abhay’s pet name) developed a mind of his own. And that’s why he chose the films he did and that’s why people have liked him

- What makes you angry?
Fake people make me angry. I dislike people who lie. That’s the reason I don’t step out much. I used to attend parties but not any more. It’s the same conversation. People talk bullshit at parties. I’m not comfortable or happy being there.

- What’s the one thing that ails the industry and you’d like to change?
There are so many things, dude! How and where do I start? Our way of thinking is very medieval. We don’t think about the future. We like to backstab each other. And we still don’t want to make things happen for the entire industry. Everyone thinks in individual terms. Look at the South industry, they are so united. There’s nothing that can affect them. Look at the way they have contained piracy. Their territory is so small but look at the money they make. There are so many things the government could help us with but nothing happens.

Guddu Dhanoa's comeback with Bichchoo sequel

It is believed that director Guddu Dhanoa is all set to make a comeback with the sequel of his hit film Bichhoo.

Now when everyone in Bollywood is remaking and coming up with sequels of their films, there's one more filmmaker to join the bandwagon. Guddu Dhanoa who made films like Ziddi, Aflatoon, Bichhoo and Big Brother, is all set to make sequel of Bichhoo.

Bobby Deol and Rani Mukherjee starrer Bichhoo was an action thriller that released in 2000. We heard Dhanoa is planning to make a sequel with an all new star-cast. There's a possibility that Bichhoo actors, Bobby Deol and Rani Mukherjee might be seen in cameo.

Guddu Dhanoa is yet to finalize the cast of the film. He is planning to start the film by this year end.

ну вот и Бобби по YPD2 высказался:

There's nothing like a dream role: Bobby Deol

New Delhi, March 29 — Be it action, comedy or drama, Bobby Deol has tried his hand at various genres over the 18 years that he has been in Bollywood -- he is still exploring and says there is nothing like a perfect role for an actor.

The 46-year-old debuted in 1995 with "Barsaat" and gave hits like "Ajnabee", "Soldier" and "Gupt".

"I'm still exploring the industry. I have grown up as an actor but I am in the learning phase. I'll never be satisfied," Bobby told IANS.

Any particular role that he is looking forward to do?

"I feel there's nothing like a dream role for an actor. It should be a dream role for a viewer - something he wants to watch over and again. I love watching old masala films. Now we talk about new cinema. It's not new. It has been always there. So I am looking forward to do more of masala films, a perfect pack of action, comedy, romance," he said.

The actor was here on Friday afternoon to promote his forthcoming film, Sangeeth Sivan's directed "Yamla Pagla Deewana 2".

"For an actor, the journey always continues. It never stops. Before the release of each film, there's stress, anxiety and nervousness... but just one mistake and you are gone.

"I have never restricted myself. I am open to doing all kinds of films - action, thriller, romance and comedy. In fact, I have done many in the past. I am lucky to be born in the family of actors. My dad and brother keep advising me. And it helps," added the actor who was last seen in "Players" (2012).

His forthcoming film, a sequel to the 2011 hit comedy "Yamla Pagla Deewana", also stars Neha Sharma and Kristina Akheeva.

In the film, Bobby is playing the same character of Gajodhar Singh as he did in the original and said "the other characters are also the same, only the situations keep changing".

- мне, как любителю "старого кино", приятно читать, что Бобби тоже любит старую масалу...

Oksana - я ведь только редактор, так что - в общих чертах...

Вот ещё выставили из Бобсовых слов - до этого только фразу об Абхае использовали

Lucky to have a father like Dharmendra, says Bobby Deol

Bobby Deol: Salman told me when his films weren't working he piggybacked on Sunny Deol & Sanjay Dutt's stardom Updated May 25, 2018 | 10:00 IST | Gaurang Chauhan
Bobby Deol is gearing up for the release of Race 3. The film will see him acting alongside Salman Khan. Talking about how he helped him in getting the film, Bobby revealed a sound advice Salman gave him once.
After a hiatus of four years, Bobby Deol returned to the big screen with last year's underrated comedy Poster Boys. Even though the film didn't work that well at the box office, Bobby saw some good reviews coming his way praising his performance. And with this year's Eid release Race 3, Bobby is all set to catapult himself back to the big league.
Whenever talking about getting a big opportunity like Race 3, Bobby doesn't fail to credit and thank Salman Khan for it. He has said it so many times how Salman Kha called him for the film and asked him if he is ready to take off his shirt.
Talking further in detail about it, Bobby, in a recent interview with Anupama Chopra, revealed how during a CCL match Salman met Bobby and gave him a sound advice about staying afloat in Bollywood. Also read: Watch - An emotional Bobby Deol talks about his no-work phase: I didn't want my kids to think of me as a loser.
Recalled Bobby,
Salman told me that, "Dekh jab mera career theek nahin jaa raha tha tab main tere bhai (Sunny Deol) ki peeth par chadh gaya, Sanjay Dutt ki peeth par chadh gaya". So I said then "Mamu"', I call him mamu, I said, "Mamu, mujhe teri peeth pe chadhne de". Give me work.
(Salman told me, "When I was going through a bad phase in my career, I piggybacked on the Sunny Deol and Sanjay Dutt's stardom". So I said, "Mamu let me piggyback on your stardom")
And Bobby continued that Salman first asked him to shave his beard off. And actually got tried for a film project for Bobby which didn't materialise. But finally got him Race 3. Bobby Deol: I am as gullible as my Dad Dharmendra
By Roshmila Bhattacharya, Pune Mirror | Updated: Aug 9, 2018, 09:58 IST
Bobby Deol: I am as gullible as my Dad Dharmendra
iNTERVIEW: BOBBY DEOL, ACTOR
Bobby Deol on playing young Dharam, the similarities between him and his father, and reuniting with him and brother to take the Yamal Pagla Deewana franchise forward
What was it like to reunite with dad Dharmendra and brother Sunny for the Yamla Pagla Deewana franchise?
It’s always exciting working with dad and my brother. I wish I could do more work with them but it takes time to find good a script. This franchise itself is returning after four years.
This is the fourth film, if you include Apne, to feature the three Deols. Does it get easier working together over time?
During Apne there was some nervousness because I was facing someone I’d looked up to all my life, someone who is a father before an actor to me. But dad is an amazing co-star. He motivates you, gives you space and encourages you to improvise. He’s full of surprises as an actor.

Dharmendra remembers late actor Mehmood on his 14th death anniversary
Apne wasn’t your first film together. You had played the young Dharam in Dharam-Veer in 1977...
(Laughs) I was around six then. Dad was looking for someone to play his character as a child, someone fit, with strong legs, and since it was difficult to find one, asked if I’d play the role. I was game, completely uninhibited. I just wanted to be an actor and was really excited to go on the set. I remember picking up the hammer which was too heavy for little me. They reassured me, saying, “Don’t worry, they have made a lighter one for you.” It was a fleeting appearance, not even 30 seconds, but it made me feel on top of the world. I dubbed my own lines and during the golden jubilee celebrations, since dad was not in town, I went with my chachaji to collected his trophy. They gave me one too.
In the first Yamla Pagla Deewana you had recreated your dad’s iconic scene from Sholay, lurching drunkenly and threatening to commit suicide. Director Navaniat Singh informs that you have recreated it thrice in Part 3.
This time it was different. Yes, there are moments that resembled what dad had done in his films, including Sholay. It’s fun, who better than his sons to do what he has done before We look alike and there are similarities…
How similar are you?
(Chuckles) I’m as gullible as dad. My brother too is a lot like him, at times.
There are moments in the film when you’re upset with him for not paying rent. What makes you angry for real?
I don’t like people who lie and who are fake. Humans get angry easily (laughs). We are more angry than happy, we only need reasons to get upset.

Housefull 4: Akshay Kumar, Kriti Sanon, Bobby Deol-starrer kicks off in London with a song
Earlier, we knew Bobby as the Deol who could dance and was good in action films. Now, we are getting to see your comic timing too.
Given a choice I’d still like to do more action films and thrillers. Even as a viewer that’s what I enjoy. Comedy was the third choice but it’s the flavour of the industry today and I don’t want to be left behind. I enjoy the genre. Dad’s comic timing is on another level and that motivates me. It can be difficult or easy depending on how you feel and the script. Some scripts are not funny and you wonder why you’re doing what you are. It works when the writer, director and the actors work as a team.
You’ve just returned from the first schedule of Housefull 3. That must have been fun.
I’ve known Akshay (Kumar) and Riteish (Deshmukh) for years, Sajid Nadiadwala since my first film and Sajid Khan since college. All of them have great chemistry having done a lot of films together and it was fun being a part of that. It was fun understanding and learning their brand of comedy during those 12 days. The main shooting will start in September in India.
Do you believe in punar janam now, given that the film deals with reincarnation?
(Laughs) As a kid someone told me a story about rebirth and it upset me. I insisted I’d only return as my mum and dad’s son as I couldn’t live without them.
Twinkle, your first co-star in Barsaat, is now married to Akshay. Did you find time to catch up when in London?
Tina hardly comes to the sets but my wife (Tanya) and she went with the kids to Hyde Park. Aarav (Akshay, Twinkle’s son) and Aryaman are around the same age and bonded well. I was working most of the time and Tina was doing her art course.

Farah Khan choreographs a song for Akshay Kumar, Kriti Sanon and Bobby Deol for Housefull 4
Are your sons, Aryaman and Dharam, showing an interest in the craft?
There is no business like showbiz and my sons are definitely inclined towards it. But at the moment I want them to concentrate on their studies so that they have options open to them.
I remember picking up the hammer. It was too heavy for little me, but dad’s staff reassured me, ‘Don’t worry, they have made a lighter one for you’

.
Sunny’s son Karan is gearing up for his launch. Any advice for your nephew?
Nobody likes advice. As a youngster even I thought I knew everything. As long as they listen to what you say and follow it, it’s okay. Everyone learns from their own experiences. I just tell the kids to be focussed on their work, everything else will fall in place.
In a song with Kriti Kharbanda “Nazar Battu”, you don’t look older than 20. What have you done to set the clock back?
(Laughs) I’ve just started taking better care of myself — eating right, working out, being focussed. Luckily, I have great genes, my dad doesn’t look 80. And when you are positive from within, the energy makes you look younger and fresher.
Race 3 brought Salman Khan into your life. Any other collaborations on the way?
I hope so. We are constantly in touch, he’s monitoring my workouts. He is always so concerned and motivating. He’s such a superstar, yet he cares so much for others. I don’t have words to express what I feel for him.
Karan Johar is all set to revive the Dostana franchise. What memories does the 2008 film bring back for you?
Karan is a great producer. He took such good care of us. And it was so much fun being on the set with John (Abraham), Abhishek (Bachchan), Priyanka (Chopra) and the director, Tarun Mansukhani. I was wondering why it’s taking them so long to spin a sequel and now finally they have a script. I’m looking forward to seeing Dostana 2.

In a recent interview, Bobby spoke about his debut as the young Dharam in Dharam-Veer. What do you recall of that shoot?
I remember Bobby’s confidence and how he refused to share the money he’d been paid as shagun with the staff. (Laughs) Even at that age, Bobby was careful with his money as I still remind him. Sunny was always a spendthrift and even as a child would get expensive gifts for the help from holidays abroad, saying, “Mera dil chahta hai, papa.”
When I came to Mumbai, mere saath pura Punjab aa gaya tha. My mother had told me then, “Dharam, tera kitchen jitna bhara rahega, tu utna hi bhagyashali rahega.” Her words still echo when I see them in my farmhouse. My sons have had a different life from mine, but they have the same passion and are not greedy. We ask for only what we need, and a lot of what we need is love. We are men who think with our hearts. Hamara dimag bhi hamare dil mein hai.

Director Navniat Singh’s Yamla Pagla Deewana Phir se was a comic caper like no other. A film with absolute clean comedy with no traces pf double meaning dialogues or innuendos. This flavor of comedy was missing from the Indian silver-screen for a long time now.

The film stars the veteran Dharmendra, Sunny and Bobby Deol along with Kriti Kharbanda. Puran (Sunny Deol) is the macho man of his house in Punjab who can stand against running trucks and fight ten bodybuilders together, but behind this touch and superman facade lies a very understanding, deep, mature, loving and caring patriarchal figure who makes sure the family stays together, eats together and sleeps together. He is also the sole protector of the legacy his generation has endowed him with. It is the secret Ayurveda formula that he is trying to guard. A formula that many have been vying to get their hands on. One amongst them is the pharmaceutical giant Marfatia played by Mohan Kapoor.

Bobby Deol plays Kaala the materialistic yet a little zany brother who always neds the guidance of the elder so that he doesn’t stray from the path. Kaala falls in love with the Gujju lass Chikoo (Kriti Kharbanda) who has flown down specially from Gujarat to Amritsar so that she is able to lean more about Ayurveda from Puran. It is later revealed that she has ulterior motives!

Dharmendra plays advocate Parmar whose gift of the gab and charm can give all the other lawyers of the country a tough competition. Parmar is an out and out romantic man in his late 60s who talks to angels and has also forcefully usurped the room in which he was just a tenant. When Marfatia is successful in patenting the ayurvedic formula it is Parmar who pleads in the court on behalf of the brothers!

Sunny in his big brother image on and off screen does splendid justice to his role. He blasts pillars and is strong enough to stop a rushing truck in the middle of the road with his hands! Well, it is Sunny Deol , ladies and gentlemen – You cannot question! It all looks pretty justified! Bobby looks the role. He plays the character with a certain affability that does away with all his shortcomings. He is head over heels in love with a girl who is the sole reason of all the ruckus in their lives and yet he just can’t get over her... AWWWW!

Do we even need to talk about the original He-Man of Indian Cinema? he is too good with his comic timing, his expressions, his quirky rebuttals in the courtroom scene. Especially in one scene where he reprimands the opposition lawyer and repeats what he said mockingly and says “Mr Ghatiya… Pehle to Aap Apni Tallafuzz Thik kijiye.”(why don’t you rectify your pronunciation and speak the language correctly, first?) IT reminded me of the Hrishikesh Mukherjee film “Chupke Chupke.” He is just TOO GOOD! The chemistry between Parmar and the judge of the court played by Shartrughan Sinha is a class apart. Just their conversations and facial expressions take the cake! Hass Hass Ke Ho jaega Bura Haalll…

Kriti Kharbanda plays Chikoo, a Gujju surgeon with ambitions to have a clinic of her own and to fulfill her wish, she can do anything. Hers is a character that is extremely crucial to the film. It is commendable that in a film with so many male actors, the female actress has a meaty role. Kriti Kharbanda has done her bit, she looks very pretty in every frame and her chemistry with Bobby too looked beautiful.

The music by Raju Singh didn’t have much to add to the story. However, the dialogues penned by Bunty Rathore and Vankush Arora in the film, especially in the courtroom scene were outrageously funny!

All in all, don’t go to watch the film if you wish to devour it with your pseudo sensibilities, simple and straight, it is a comedy film, a fully entertaining family film, so don’t carry your heads on your shoulders when you watch it, just enjoy it for the film it is – Guys, it is Yamla Pagla Deewana Phir se- Hence it is just mad!! Go ENJOY!!!

Bobby Deol Roped In As A Mascot For The Indian Pro Music LeagueAfter Shraddha Kapoor, Govinda, Rajkummar Rao and Riteish Deshmukh, Bobby Deol has been roped in as a mascot for the Indian Pro Music League. On Monday, Deol shot for the teaser of the upcoming television show at Film City, Goregaon. Several singers, including Mika Singh, Shaan, Javed Ali and Shilpa Rao, are also part of the show, which will have teams from different parts of India battling it out for the trophy.

On the work front, Bobby Deol stunned his fans with his stint in Aashram, a dystopic digital drama. He is all set to broaden his horizon by playing a negative role with its second season. The character played by Bobby, Kashipur Waale Baba Nirala will have a bigger, bolder and stronger return as the uncrowned king of his own kingdom. Bending every rule to suit himself, this edition will see him as a man so dark and vile, preying on the innocent in the name of faith.

The audience was taken aback by Bobby Deol's serene and calm Baba avatar in the first part of the series will be in for a shock with his demonic persona in Chapter 2. Babaji's insatiable greed for power, money and lust sees him use the façade of the Aashram to conduct illegal activities, trading the trust of his vulnerable followers to grow his own political clout, smuggling drugs and exploiting the women whom he promised solace and his protection.

Produced and directed by Prakash Jha, this sensational series also stars Aaditi Pohankar, Chandan Roy Sanyal, Darshan Kumaar, Anupriya Goenka, Adhyayan Suman, Tridha Choudhury, Vikram Kochhar, Tushar Pandey, Sachin Shroff, Anuritta K Jha, Rajeev Siddhartha, Parinitaa Seth, Tanmaay Ranjan, Preeti Sood, Jahangir Khan, Kanupriya Gupta and Navdeep Tomar in pivotal roles.

I got angry with myself because I was not getting any work. - Bobby Deol

With his long locks, drop dead good looks and lean, muscular frame, Bobby Deol looked like the perfect matinee star. And he did prove himself with films like Soldier and Gupt. But slowly, strangely, his aura faded. Producers started staying away and so did fans. Yes, the Deol charisma still kept him around but he wasn’t considered a dependable box office draw any more. It seemed like Bobby himself had lost faith, in himself. There were reports of alcoholism, of bouts of depression. People loyal to him insisted it’s just a phase. That he’ll bounce back. And proving the naysayers wrong, he did. Deols are known for their physique and Bobby hit the gym with a vengeance, getting his body back in shape. Being part of talked-about films like Race 3 and Housefull 4 made the masses take notice of him once more. At 50, Bobby was ready to begin again. He rediscovered his love for acting. His performances in the gritty cop drama Class Of ’83 (Netflix) and the Prakash Jha directed series Ashram are proof of that. He’s smiling more now, and these smiles are genuine, they are the smiles of a survivor who’s having the last laugh..

Bobby deol

Talking about your film Class Of ’83, this is your most serious role ever. How challenging was it to play a role like that?
I was actually looking to playing a challenging character. I was searching for a change of image. Of course, I was nervous stepping out of my comfort zone, which is exactly what I liked about the character. The speciality of this film is that the characters of this film are not larger than life. They are quite normal. There are moments of heroism in their lives but they
aren’t over the top. I enjoyed doing this role thoroughly.

What was the toughest part of playing a cop?
Vijay Singh isn’t your regular film cop. My priority was that I shouldn’t come across as Bobby Deol in the film. Because when you are enacting a role, it is possible that some gestures or aspect of your personality might seep into it. I found that the life journey of my character Vijay Singh is quite similar to my own life.

In what sense?
You want to do something good in your life. But all of a sudden a bad phase comes in your life and your close ones get alienated from you. Vijay Singh faces that situation. His main regret is that he wasn’t able to alter the situation. Something similar happened in my
life as well.

What went wrong in your life?
Main khud se naaraz ho gaya tha... I got angry with myself because I was not getting any work. You know there was a time when people came to me with work. Then the times changed. People stopped coming, stopped meeting. I was losing out on so much work and afterwards, I really gave up. I stopped taking care of myself. I started drinking. I was lost somewhere and went adrift. It’s so bad…seeing my children watching their father sitting at home. Then I realised I had to help myself because no one else could. I began looking after myself and kept myself ready for opportunities. I want to forget those days...

Who supported you during those dark days?
My family and my wife Tanya supported me a lot. The best thing to happen to me in my life is my wife. She’s a very simple, strong lady. Only a wife can understand her husband’s difficulties. She knows me very well. She is very talented. She handles her own business. (Laughs) She looks after three children, me being the oldest.

Bobby deol

Did the experience bring you closer to your kids?
My kids are happy to see me working. I tell them that life is not easy. But that does not mean that you should constantly be stressed. Enjoy your life. But remain focussed and disciplined. My life is an example for them. I tell them that they should pay attention to their studies. Become something then do whatever you want to do. When they decide on the future course of action,
I will definitely help them.

What was the worst thing about your dark episode?
That once in my life I almost gave up. I’ll always regret that I stopped being positive about my career.

Are your children interested in acting?
I think every child wants to become a hero or a heroine. Both my kids are studying at the moment. My elder son Aryaman is studying business management. I’ve told him to keep his horizons open. Because if you cannot become an actor then what are the other options? You have to keep some realistic things open.

What have you discovered about yourself over the years?
This is an ongoing process. I’m discovering myself even now.

Which quality of Dharamji have you inherited? And which quality you wish you had?
I feel I should become a good person like him. I have not seen a good person like him till today. I feel proud that I am Dharmendra’s son.

Bobby deol

What kind of relationship do you share with your children? Do they have the same bonding that you shared with your father?
When we were growing up, papa was working hard. So we didn’t spend much time with him. I used to go with him for outdoor shootings. People thought and acted in a different way then. The relation between father and children wasn’t as smooth then as it’s in today’s generation. I made it a point to avoid that kind of a distance with my own kids. We have a friendly relationship. In earlier times, children respected their parents but didn’t open their hearts to them. My father always complains that I don’t open my heart to him. He often tells me to sit with him, talk to him and I reply that even today I’m afraid you’ll start scolding me.
I wanted to take that fear away from my children and perhaps I’ve been successful in doing so.

Nepotism is a much-reviled topic currently. What are your thoughts on it?
I’m quite troubled as to why this topic should be blown up in such a manner.
I know one thing, if you are a star son, you get the first chance easily. That’s the easy part. After that, you’re on your own. If you aren’t good no one can build your career for you. And nepotism can be seen in every field. The child of a doctor wants to become a doctor, a businessman wants his son to join him in business. Similarly, an actor’s son dreams of becoming an actor. At one point in life, I had no work at all. If only nepotism was at play here, I should never have been out of work.

How are you coping up with the quarantine?
Papa, Sunny Bhaiya, his family, my family and kids -- we stay together. We have a gym at home and I spend many hours in the gym as regular exercise improves your immunity. Corona has given everyone family time. I do miss my friends and have not met them for the last five months. Apart from that, I read scripts and watch movies. I shave every day. I maintain myself and try to be as positive as possible. And whenever I worry about the future, I remind myself that I’ve seen the worst. This too shall pass.

Bobby deol

What has the lockdown taught you?
Stay focussed. You should never lose your focus. If you are focussed, you will stay disciplined.
I have learnt this from my papa and Sunny Bhaiya.

OTT platforms have become quite popular nowadays...
I think that OTT platforms as well as the theatre, both will survive. Cinema will never die. We can order food sitting at home, but the fun in going out and eating is something else. The same thing applies to films. People will never stop going to the theatres.

Bhumi Pednekar. Talk to her for ten minutes and you know she’s a true-blue actor. And that’s a good thing. Because filmmakers are increasingly turning away from subjects which portray leading women as dolled up mannequins. And they are doing it because the audience is showing signs of being fed up of mere fluff and want a taste of something substantial. Normal and relatable is the order of the day and Bhumi fits right in the new order of things. We would even be bold enough to say that she has been one of the pioneers of this new normal. She started off by playing a sassy overweight wife in Dum Laga Ke Haisha. And had no qualms playing a sharpshooting grandmother in her last release Saand Ki Aankh. She’s still in awe of movies, of movie-makers. Her replies are forthright, witty and introspective. She’s both wise and foolish, content and hungry. Raring to run, and enjoying the serenity of the lockdown...

Bhumi Pednekar
What’s your lock down routine like?
Currently, I’m just spending a lot of time with my mom and my sister. Times like these make you realise that there is nothing above the safety of the people you love. I’m reading a lot. I’m going through my school history books. I’m trying to understand programming because computers have always been so alien to me. I’m studying climate change because that’s something dear to me. And I’m cooking. One day my mom and sister gave me so much attitude. I wanted banana bread and I was like I’ll do it myself. I’m not dependent on you guys anymore. I followed the recipe and I baked banana bread and since then I have not looked back. (Laughs) Now I’m Bhumi the baker. And I’m working out.

Do you feel there are too many don’ts in your life than do’s as an actor?
It’s been four years and eight outstanding films. And the reason I could make this space for me is because my first film was a big don’t. No one could have imagined that there could be a film about a beautiful, overweight, firecracker of a girl. l just jumped into it. I was seventeen when I joined YRF. I don’t come from a film family. Everyone thought I was crazy. My family couldn’t help me. I just took my chances and look -- you and I are having this conversation right now...

It’s interesting that you addressed the topic of body shaming because our movies constantly play up to a stereotype of a pretty, fair, perfect body.
Not just the showbiz. It involves years and years of social conditioning. Luckily, when
I joined cinema, there was a movement against stereotypes. I feel happy that I could be part of the revolution and now I feel good celebrating my flaws on celluloid. It has made me a confident person. Now I don’t care if I’m a couple of kgs heavier. There was a phase when I was shooting for Sonchiriya and people were like, ‘Oh my God, you look so thin, you look sick.’ I was
like it’s my choice, I’ll do what is right for my character.

Let’s talk of two roles you did last year, which shattered stereotypes - Sonchiriya and
Saand Ki Aankh
My selfish motive of doing a film is personal growth as an actor, a great opportunity that is going to showcase another side of my talent, the greed to work in a good story and with good directors. And then comes all the other social fringes that are attached to that. Yes, I am a proud feminist and I’m trying to use my craft to bring about change. I’ll start off with Sonchiriya. I am a huge Abhishek Chaubey fan. I have loved all his films especially Ishqiya and Udta Punjab. He called me right after Shubh Mangal Saavdhan. That year was so amazing. I got calls from Zoya (Akhtar), Karan (Johar), Abhishek (Chaubey ) and I was like wow, thank God. I met him and he gave me a story narration. I was like I have to do this. I had a few questions like at my age, do I want to play a mother to a fifteen year old? Everybody was like why go to small-town India again? But I knew in a film like this and with a director like Abhishek Chaubey, he was going to keep at it till I sparkled. It was a different world and what my character did, what she stood for, the kind of courage she had, I was blown away by her. And she barely speaks in the film. It was a challenge and he did tell me that it was going to be tough both emotionally and physically. Sonchiriya changed my life.

It changed you how?
I met this girl Khushi, who plays Sonchiriya. She is like a younger sister, a daughter to me. She comes on all my film sets. I’ve been so fortunate that through her I made a family of 250-300 children in the ashram from where we cast her in Morena in Chambal. Those children have become part of my life. And that switch from being a self-centered person to somebody who actually cares about others happened because of that girl. I am a young woman, right? How did I develop such strong maternal instincts for someone? But that girl transformed me. She started living with me and brought such happiness in my life. I love her. I speak to these children every Sunday through a whatsapp video call. The experience that Khushi had while shooting for Sonchiriya has changed her life as well.

Tell us something about your prep work for the role.
My diet changed. I was on a carb-heavy diet. I completely stopped eating meat. I had to carry this kid and run throughout the film. My trainer would give me a backpack that was about thirty-thirty five kgs and I would run barefoot carrying that. I would go in the morning to Abhishek’s office. The courtyard there was turned into a village. There was a chulha and I would get the upli, I would go pick up dry sticks to make that fire. One day he got me fifteen kgs of akkha Haldi that I had to grind into powder. I’d use the chakki to make aata everyday. Then I’d cook for everyone on that chulha. And then I would go for my physical training. I learnt the Bundelkhandi language, it’s very different from Hindi. Abhishek changed my craft. Usually they say that your eyes speak a lot but Abhishek said you are an expressive person, just cut it down. We would wake up at 4 am and walk for kilometers. There were mosquitos and insects. There was nowhere to go to the bathroom, you had to hold it in, there was no option.

Was it a surreal moment for you holding the Filmfare trophy for Saand Ki Aankh?
You heard the three minute speech that I gave. I was so overwhelmed. It was special also because I don’t think I’ll ever be part of a film like Saand Ki Aankh again, where I feel so happy sharing the stage with my sister-in-arms. You know that notion that two actors can’t be friends is all bullshit because for a film like Saand Ki Aankh it would have felt incomplete without Taapsee. A lot of people asked me why do you want to play an old woman on screen? Are you crazy? This is the peak of your career. When I do a film like Saand Ki Aankh, it comes at a cost. Me saying no to many other bigger films.

Do you regret saying no to any film?
I get a mix bag of offers. I had a big-ticket film as well. But when I chose to do a film like Saand Ki Aankh, it’s, as I said earlier, for purely selfish reasons, for my personal growth. And what I’ve achieved from Saand Ki Aankh, even a big-ticket film couldn’t have done for me. I want to leave behind a legacy of good cinema and I know Saand Ki Aankh is part of that list. I know Sonchiriya is part of that list. Yes they didn’t make hundred crores. But i could never own a hundred-crore film, like I own these films. It comes with a cost but it’s ok.

Any of your colleagues’ roles that you’ve seen recently that you wished you’d done.
Definitely Gully Boy and I’m not going to say Alia’s part. I’m going to say all of them from Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Siddhant Chaturvedi to Vijay Verma -- all of them. That film is outstanding! I loved Kapoor & Sons. I’m not going to pick one specific performance because I envy all good performers. I watched Thappad yesterday, all of them have done fantastic jobs. And I loved what Ayushmann did in Article 15. I would love to do a film like Article 15.

Bhumi Pednekar

What would be a good pickup line and a bad pickup line to woo you?
Listen, people have stopped using pickup lines. The world has become very boring now.

You have not been in a relationship for a long time?
Not in the last few years.

Why is that?
You’ve seen the films I’m doing. I’m in Chambal, Haryana. I don’t have time.

You don’t mind dating a co-star or director?
It’s very simple. Firstly, it’s me plus two other women in my life. So the man who can handle the madness that the Pednekars come with, is more than welcome. But I don’t think there’s anyone so ballsy whom I’ve met yet.
