‘I am a child at heart’

April 03, 2007 21:05 IST

Bobby Deol has six films lined up for release beginning with ‘Shaka Laka Boom Boom’.

Actor Bobby Deol is suddenly inundated with work. “I’ve six releases coming up this year.” Ask him if he is tired and he replies, “No just apprehensive about how audiences will react to so many of my films tumbling out.”

Bobby has just returned from shooting an action film in Chandigarh with director Sangeeth Sivan (of ‘Kya Kool Hain Hum’ fame). “Sangeeth has also done ‘Zor’ with my brother (Sunny Deol). So we know each other well. Like me he’s a softie at heart.”

Bobby’s co-star in the Sivan film is Nana Patekar. “I had heard so many stories about him. But he’s very chilled out. He’s a unique actor. I also worked with Zarinaji (Wahab) for the first time. She’s such a warm and caring person. We had a great time. Also, I was doing an action flick after so long.”

Bobby is gearing up for six releases. “There is a whole lot of me ahead. I guess I’ve reason to be jittery. Last year, I had virtually no release.

Now I’ve projects like ‘Shaka Laka Boom Boom’, ‘Nanhe Jaisalmer’, ‘Jhoom Barabar Jhoom’, Abbas-Mustan’s and Sangeeth Sivan’s untitled films and of course ‘Apne’ directed by Anil Sharma lined up for release. I hope they’re spaced out. But it’s not in my hands.”

Bobby elaborates on the dark character he is playing in Suneel Darshan’s ‘Shaka Laka Boom Boom’. “I’ve played ruthless killers earlier in ‘Bicchoo’, ‘Badal’ and ‘Soldier’.

My character in ‘Shaka Laka…’ is a musician who’s so much in love with his music that he’s willing to go to any lengths for his passion. Only towards the end of the journey does he realise how wrong he was.”

Bobby elaborates, “He’s like a kid who demands, ‘I want, I want’. I guess, I’m a child at heart too. But I don’t have a mean streak. I like playing characters, who are not like me. For example, I always play a rich guy. But I’m not rich in real life!”

He adds, “I’m sure there’s jealousy in every profession. In the film industry you see people manipulating and backstabbing. It used to disturb me earlier. But now I’m conditioned to it. I try to stay away from such people.”

Interestingly, Bobby in ‘Shaka Laka…’ is in love with only his music. “I can’t understand that mind-set because I’m in love with so many things. Besides my work, I love my family, my time to myself, food…In fact, I need to take my sons for a holiday this summer vacation. I wonder if I can get away!”

One person Bobby loved working with is Shaad Ali in ‘Jhoom Barabar Jhoom’. “He’s such a chilled-out guy. He treats everyone, from actors to spot-boys equally. We’ve known each other for years. I didn’t feel the least awkward being directed by him,” he gushes.

Bobby's tired of giving interviews
April 04, 2007

It's a tough job, but someone's got to do it.

Bobby Deol stars in this week's release Shakalaka Boom Boom, with Kangana Ranaut, Upen Patel and Celina Jaitley. And while he can be charming on video, the actor is more than fed up with giving the same old interviews.

Video: Bobby Deol goes Boom Boom

Patcy N cornered him, and while Bobby forbade her from asking anything not related to Boom, tried to get more out of the actor than a yawn. Here's the exact transcript:

Bobby: Your job is to take interviews, but that's not my job. I hate giving interviews. I have to, because my producer wants it. If I had my way, I would never give interviews. People will see the promos, they will smell if it is a good film, and come to the theatre. If they like it, then its fine; if they don't, we can't help it.

After all, what can I say differently about the movie? On every channel I will answer the same questions: What is the film's USP? What is your role in the film? Why did you do this film?

Patcy: I will ask some different questions.

Bobby: Kitna different ho sakta hai? (How different can it be?)

Patcy: You must be saying the same thing over and over again

Bobby: No, sometime I miss a few words, and make it sound different. (Laughs) I am just so fed up. I have been traveling; I am down.

Patcy: Just imagine how many interviews we have to do.

Bobby: Yeah, but you all should say, 'no, we don't want to do interviews of Shakalaka Boom Boom.'

Patcy: I wish we could.

Bobby: Bolna chahiye (You should)

Patcy: Then let's ask you some other questions, and later come back to Shakalaka Boom Boom.

Bobby: No, no, no. I will not answer anything other than Shakalaka Boom Boom. Don't even enter other movies. When other movies are releasing, their producers will catch hold of rediff and I will give interviews for those.

Patcy: So can we know what Shakalaka Boom Boom is all about?

Bobby: It is a film based on the music industry and how they function inside -- the rivalry and manupilation and power play happening.

Patcy: Is the rivalry between the composers or singers?

Bobby: My character in the film is a musician and a singer too. He composes his own songs. He needs the support of others. But he has worked very hard to achieve what he has achieved in his profession. He has worked so hard that his biggest insecurity is that he is always upset with God, that He didn't give him more talent so the music would just come out from within him without any effort.

There is always a big fear in anybody who reaches a high point in their career. They have the fear that someone will come and take their place from them.

That's what happens in my profession too. Somebody who is very talented but very arrogant comes in. And it's about how that arrogance of this guy comes in way of his career too, that is played by Upen Patel. He treats people in a wrong way. And he does the biggest mistake, he pushes my character in the wrong way. And I react to this and see that no one can reach the high point except for me.

Patcy: Is it like you and Upen are working together and then you guys split?

Bobby: We are two different individuals, working differently. I am in the industry for longer and I have achieved a lot. And we are partners in the music company, so that way he has lot of power. He uses his power to get back in a very arrogant manner.

Patcy: How was it working with your co-stars Upen Patel, Kangana Ranaut and Celina Jaitley?

Bobby: We were working as co-actors who were trying to do the best for the movie, It was nice working with Upen. He is a very chilled out guy, very professional determined about what he wants from his life. He is very focussed. It's been fun working with everyone, they are all chilled out people. It was fun. When we were not working, we would spend time together.

Patcy: You shot in Johannesburg. When you guys weren't shooting, what would you do?

Bobby: We were always shooting! When we go outdoors, the producer sees to it that we are shooting everyday. We were wrking long hours. There were days when we I could leave earlier than others, as the script did not require me to be there. But at the most we would chat and dine together.

Patcy: The promos don't reveal who has which lady.

Bobby: The promos are meant to give you the feel of the movie, but at the same time don't want to reveal anything. The film hasn't released so I can't say who is with whom. But the film is based on human nature. Every human has a good side and bad side to him.

Patcy: This is your third film with Suneel Darshan. How was it working with him?

Bobby: He is like my family. I know him too well, he has worked with my brother too. Its almost like my family production.

Patcy: Can you tell us some anecdotes from the film?

Bobby: This is very difficult question. Life main kitna kuch hota rehta hai, log puchte hai kuch bataye, tab kuch yaad nahi aata. (So much happens in life, but when people ask for an incident, nothing comes to mind.) It's very difficult to recollect, but yes, we did have fun moments.

Patcy: During the shoot was there any scene that was particularly difficult to do?

Bobby: There were some scenes, but if I tell you, you will know everything. But yes, there are such scenes you find very awkward, but as an actor you have to do.

Patcy: I want to know about your home production Apne.

Bobby: I am here to talk only about Shakalaka Boom Boom. When Apne comes I will talk about it.

Patcy: How far has it progressed?

Bobby: Its finished it will release this year.

Patcy: Is it difficult working with your brother Sunny and father Dharmendra?

Bobby: No its not. It's like sitting at home and being yourself.

Patcy: Are they strict on the set?

Bobby: They are not. They are just exactly the way they are at home.

Patcy: How are they at home?

Bobby: Just like a father and brother would be.

Patcy: What are your other movies in hand?

Bobby: I have 6 releases this year. They are all coming out one after the other, so you will see a lot of myself coming this year.

Patcy: Any career mistakes?

Bobby: I am here to speak only about Shakalaka Boom Boom. My greatest career mistake is giving interviews. I tell the person I will only talk about that movie and allow that person to ask me more.

Patcy: After doing so many movies, do you think you have arrived or are you still struggling?

Bobby: Every day of your life is struggle. You are always struggling to achieve more and more. So one can never say I am not struggling.

Patcy: Any regrets in life?

Bobby: No.

Patcy: What is your favourite pastime, when not shooting?

Bobby: Giving interviews, which is what I am doing. Otherwise...

Patcy: Otherwise?

Bobby: I just like to be at home with my family.

Patcy: Anything else you would like to say?

Bobby: Thank you for bearing with me.

Patcy: Was the interview short enough?

Bobby: It was a short and sweet interview.

Two aces

Akshaye Khanna and Bobby Deol arguably have the finest pedigrees in Bollywood. Both have individually given proof of their talents in the past and now are appearing together in the Abbbas-Mustan’s thriller Humraaz. The cash-strapped film industry is looking to this film to ressurect their fortunes like their illustrious fathers did in the past. Screen presents a talk with the dynamic duo where they jointly discuss the film and the future of filmmaking.

Is Humraaz inspired by The Perfect Murder?
Akshaye Khanna: I don’t think so. But since I haven’t seen The Perfect Murder I can’t really comment.

Bobby Deol: It is very hard to pinpoint the inspiration behind any Hindi film. If people say that our film is inspired by The Perfect Murder, I can name 10 other films which have a similar treatment.

No character is positive or negative all along. We are all victims of circumstances
Akshaye Khanna
So what’s the story of the film? Is it a love triangle?
Akshaye: No, it is not a love triangle. There is a lot of passion involved, but everybody has different motives for liking each other.

Bobby: Humraaz mirrors everyday life. We put on different masks while guarding our interests. I’m sure viewers will identify with the masks and the people behind them. There is a very thin line between fact and fiction and Humraaz hovers between the two.

Does this mean that both of you have negative roles?
Akshaye:No character is positive or negative all along. We are all victims of circumstances. At a particular moment in time what you interpret as negative could seem positive to me and vice-versa.

Bobby: Not only me but both Akshaye and Amisha have negative shades to her character in Humraaz, but as Akshaye said, the audience will realise that what we do is primarily to survive.

Is the Indian audience mature enough to accept heroes with grey shades?
Akshaye: I think our audience today, rather than looking for heroic qualities in lead actors now readily accepts them as human beings on screen and can adjust to the fact that they aren’t infallible.

Bobby: Yeah, our audience is slowly evolving and like their western counterparts beginning to appreciate good acting. The majority of the viewers today don’t mind if the character is good or bad as long as he delievers the goods. It is more fun to play a character with grey shades because the character is more rounded and there are lots of insights that you can work upon. (Grins) I think Akshaye is dying to add something.

Akshaye: I agree with Bobby wholeheartedly. You do get a lot more creative satisfaction playing such characters.

It is more fun to play a character with grey shades because the character is more rounded
Bobby Deol
While Bobby has done similar roles in the past, isn’t this the first time that you are portaying such a character, Akshaye? How did you prepare for the role?
Akshaye: I always wanted to do this kind of a role and I’m very excited about it. I feel challenged as an actor while trying to justify this guy’s actions, which appear rational and irrational at the same time.

Bobby: Though I have played such characters before, in this film my look is totally different. I’ve worn glasses for the first time and they have made me look more mature, more serious and more mysterious at the same time.

Don’t you agree that today filmmakers are slowly re-recognising the virtues of good story and taut screenplay and are on the verge of doing away with unnecessary frills and song-and-dance routines?
Akshaye: Our film has numerous song-and-dance routines, in fact I’m playing a dancer, but yes, I agree with the general tone of the question that while in the not-so-distant past we seemed to have lost our way when it came to narration and screenplay, now we do pay more attention to these aspects as well.

Bobby: Indian films would look incomplete without dance routines. But yes, our films are looking more taut, more sleek nowadays. Our filmmakers have realised that they can’t just dump anything on the audience because now there are so many other entertainment they can turn to.

Both your fathers formed a formidable team in the past...
(In chorus) And we hope to continue their glorious legacy.

What are your other films?
Akshaye: I’ve got Deewangee co-starring Ajay Devgan and JP Dutta’s LOC.

Bobby: My next release will be Chor Machaye Shor which is an action comedy.

Excerpts from the interview:

Karan: How’s life been?

Preity-Life’s been good! I just wrapped up a movie “Jhoom Barabar Jhoom” and now its ready for release!

Karan: Yes it’s releasing soon and everyone’s saying it’s looking fabulous and in fact the promo’s are on air and everyone’s loving them.

Preity-Well I’ve had a great time shooting for it… it’s been a great experience… first time working with Abhishek… you never cast me with him!

Karan: Well you guys were the deprived parties in KANK and those two were just having an affair behind your backs. You silly people!

Preity-No, no, no… jokes aside… working with AB for the first time and working with Bobby after 8-9 years… Lara I were working with for the first time, so it’s been great. Shaad also… I worked with Shaad in Dil Se when he was an assistant and I started off my career and now working with him… so it’s been great!

Karan: When you look back at Soldier do you think it was just the other day or you feel, lots of time has flown?

Preity: Actually I didn’t feel these 9 years, to be honest. It’s been the best time of my life. The industry has given me everything and you know people always say, this industry is sleazy, there is a casting couch, people are like this. I think people treat you the way you want to be treated by them. I have never encountered any problem with anybody who’s being cheap or sleazy because I have never portrayed myself like that.

Karan: Because you have met very classy and elegant people.

Preity: Like Karan Johar? Like KJ?

Karan: Yeah so there has been no problem on that end. I’m more of the couch myself rather than being the casting couch. Yeh Pritam Singh ka origin bata dena mujhe.

Preity: Bobby, please don’t destroy me. Please I beg you!

Bobby: Well, she’s like a guy… eh… like a buddy!

Karan: You two have been friends for a while and you’ve kept in touch even when you’ll didn’t work together?

Preity: Yes! Bobby and me have known each other before I became an actor.

Bobby: She would be with us. We would all go out in my dads van every night out and she would be sitting right at the back quiet to her self. And one day she came up to me and said Ok! I’m doing criminal psychology. Can I make you my subject? And I said to her, look Preity… I would love to but I’m from this family and if I talk about myself and if you say this is my subject Bobby Deol, I can’t do it!

Karan: You wanted to make Bobby your subject?

Preity: But you know in the beginning, I didn’t know Bobby as Dharmendra’s son.

Karan: Who did you think he was?

Preity: I swear. When I first met him, he was one of the guys in the group and I had to look for someone between 23-28 ka age group, I was finding and I needed 5 subjects and actually I didn’t realize!

So, don’t forget to tune in as Karan chats with Preity Zinta and Bobby Deol on Koffee with Karan this Sunday, June 10th at 9 p.m. on Star One and Star World.!!

"I have realized that most people here are hypocrites. They are sweet to you on your face. But the moment your back is turned, they start bitching about you."
(Filmfare Online, Oct. 1999)

Son of screen legend Dharmendra, brother of actor Sunny Deol and actress Esha, Bobby Deol has walked a rocky road to success in spite of his family connections.

It was perhaps inevitable that the brother of Sunny Deol would be typecast as an action hero. Though Bobby has tried to expand his repertoire with romantic leads in Kareeb, Dillagi, and Hum to Mohabbat Karega, the films' poor returns have prompted him to return to his forte as the Bichhoo- and Badal-style tough guy.

However, despite his success in those films, the media has been reluctant to promote him, perhaps because Bobby gives them so little to write about. Though he will gladly wax poetic on his love for wife Tania, he steadfastly refuses to discuss more controversial issues pertaining to his personal life -- like his recent quarrel with Kareena Kapoor.

Apparently on the sets of their film Ajnabee, Bobby's wife helped co-star Bipasha Basu with her wardrobe. In an industry where heroines more often view each other as competition than friends, Kareena, whose family has long been friendly with the Deols, considered Tania's act tantamount to betrayal.

Kareena's own tale differs slightly from the gossip: "Actually, there was a problem with his wife. She didn't behave properly with my mother. And I didn't like that." (Filmfare, March 2002) Whatever the exact cause may be, the two are not speaking, and Kareena's sister Karisma, who heretofore considered Bobby a close friend, has apparently sided with her sister, giving the Deols the cold shoulder. In turn, Bobby fields questions about the incident with vocal displeasure over Kareena's decision to talk about it to the press. Beyond that, he will not comment.

He refuses to apologize for his obvious distrust of the press, and attributes his wariness to past experiences with both journalists and co-stars. "I have changed a lot [since getting into this business]. I have realized that most people here are hypocrites. They are sweet to you on your face. But the moment your back is turned, they start bitching about you. Initially I used to get hurt by all this but now I'm learning to be indifferent. I enjoy my work and I keep to myself. I know now that every person I meet is not my genuine well-wisher or my friend. So I am learning to be friendly but not trusting." (Filmfare, Oct. 1999) As a result, his work must speak for itself.

I FIND LOVE STORIES BORING

After the average success of Barsaat, dismal failure of Aur Pyar Ho Gaya and the thumping success of Gupt people feel that Bobby Deol is more suited for action roles rather than love stories... What does Bobby think?
I don’t think so. I feel that if a film is well-made and well-publicised, it will succeed. Since Barsaat and Aur Pyar Ho Gaya were not successful and Gupt did well, people are saying that I am more suited for action roles.

What kind of roles does he like then? Action or romantic?
Well, I would like to do all kinds of roles. I don’t want to be stuck up with any kind of image, because in the long run it harms an actor. For instance I feel Zor was a fairly well-made film. But in this film bhaiya (Sunny) did not have a fight in the climax, and I think it went against the film. Since his films have a fair dose of action, people have begun to expect action in the climax of each of his films.

Where my personal choice is concerned, I don’t like love stories. I find them boring because often the story is the same with a few changes here and there and you end up doing the same kind of roles. It is ok to start your career with a love story. But later one should try different roles.

How different are his roles in future projects?
Very different. Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s film Kareeb is a love story, Abbas-Mustan’s Soldier is a fast-paced thriller. London is a love triangle in which my role is very different from the kind of roles I have done so far. And all these films will be released this year.

How about a negative role?
Of course, I would not shy away from doing a negative role. But it should be justified. And before accepting such a role I would like to be sure about the director and the way he has conceived the role.

How was his experience working with his brother
Sunny as director of London?
It is very good. Right from the beginning Bhaiya was interested in direction and now I am happy that he is finally wielding the megaphone. I am very relaxed working under him. I can take a lot of liberties with him which I cannot take with other directors. He is a very good director. In fact, he is the best.

Is it true that he has mentally decided to do only two films every year?
Who told you this? No, I have not taken any such decision. But yes, I will see to it that I never do more than four films a year.

Suddenly a number of starsons are being launched in a big way. Is the competition getting tough?
So what if a number of newcomers are being launched. It is not a new phenomenon. This trend had started way back in the eighties. Healthy competition is always welcome in any field. What I know for sure is that if I am good in my work, I am going to succeed even if I was not a starson. If an actor is not good in his work, he will never succeed even if he happens to be a starson.
