Bobby Deol: Family Values

He's to the manor born. The younger son of Dharmendra has not only inherited his father's mammoth talent and amazing humility but also the courtesy, warmth, professionalism and of course looks. What's more, in the process of evolution he even dances with felicity since the senior male Deols have been famous for their two left feet!

Shaaditimes talks to Bobby Deol...

You have had a fruitful 2007. Despite only one hit Apne, which brought dad, Sunny and you together, you have been appreciated for all your varied films.
Yes, I wanted to do comedy for a long while and I got my chance in Jhoom Barabar Jhoom. As for my villainy in Naqaab and grey turn in Shakalaka Boom Boom, I want to do every kind of role. I am glad that people liked me in all these films.

But the films closest to you are Apne and Nanhe Jaisalmer, right?
Absolutely. I am proud of both the films, though Nanhe Jaisalmer has not done well commercially. The film teaches you that self-belief along with education are vital. And what is good for an adult need not be so for a child. When I heard the script I told writer-director Samir Karnik that I would do the film only if he made it exactly as narrated. And he did.

Your dad too played himself in Guddi in which too there was a message and the other protagonist was his fan.
Yes, but the context of both films is completely different. That was about differentiating between reality and a dream world, here like I said it is about setting and achieving your goals.

How much of Apne was real? That is, were sequences from your family life incorporated?
No, yet there were so many sequences with which dad, Sunny bhaiyya and I as a family identified completely. In a close-knit family we waste so much time clashing with each other because we do not come face-to-face, express ourselves and sort things out. Every father has his dreams for his sons, especially if he has unfulfilled aspirations. The son also has his father as a role model, wants to fulfil them but is unable to because of various factors. The love then goes underground, and there is a clash on the surface.

You wanted to do a film together for years.
We did not want to come together as a gimmick, and so we waited years for the perfect script, which we finally found in Neeraj Pathak's story. Anil Sharma was always the one man who had directed all of us individually and wanted to direct all three of us.
People ask why we chose an action film director. But what people do not realize is that even a film like Gadar - Ek Prem Katha was primarily an emotional film, which is why it worked so well.

We hear that you are all doing a second film together.
Yes, but it will be something lighter this time. But again a proper script is a must. This is one of the five films coming out from our home banner. We have a solo film each and a film with just dad and me.

In Apne your father got a role worthy of him after almost 20 years.
True. This year has been good for him - he was loved in Life In A... Metro and also has Johnny Gaddaar coming up. What people do not know is that my father's always been a busy bee just to make money so that all of us would get the best. He selflessly works in any role and any film. He isn't proud of many of his films, but very happy and self-satisfied that he worked so much only for his family. But his global legion of fans was waiting for him to do a proper film and this year they have got it. Dad's always been an underestimated actor by the media and the industry but his fans know his talent much better! I was inspired to follow his footsteps after observing the love, attention and affection he got from his associates. Who would not want to feel so wanted - and be famous as well?

Does your dad watch all your films?
Yes, he does. He gives his inputs on them too.

What do you think of your brother as an actor?
He is tremendous! Sunny bhaiyya has at long last, been accepted as a good actor.

How does your relationship with dad differ from your brother's with him?
It's the same, except that I am mollycoddled and protected, not only by dad but by my brother too! I will always remain the youngest and pampered son, and I love it that way!

What do you think of your cousin Abhay Deol?
Watch out for him - Abhay is a very sensible and multi-talented guy, and he is good at writing scripts too.

What about your kids? Do they like to watch daddy on screen?
Yes, Aryaman and Dharam not only love watching me on screen but unlike most star-kids Aryaman likes his dad better than any other star, the way I love my father as a hero over anyone else!

Finally, in your most prolific year ever, are we getting any more films for you?
I am doing Ek, a Sangeeth Sivan thriller, and two different films, Roshan and Mera Bharat Mahaan.

On His Own Territory: Bobby Deol

Sophisticated, charming, and polished to a fault, he is proud of his heritage and is working towards maintaining his own individualism - that's Deol Junior for you. He jokes that he would like his father to be known as "Bobby's father!" The younger son of legendary Bollywood star Dharmendra, Bobby Deol, is really his father's son ... and has also inherited his sense of humour along with the gorgeous brawn.

ShaadiTimes caught up with the one of the hottest stars in Bollywood at a Mumbai studio.

Various avataars:

The spotlight was on Suneel Darshan's (Andaaz, Barsaat) latest project, "Dosti-Friends Forever", starring Bobby Deol, Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor, and Lara Dutta. Seated on the set, Bobby Deol cuts an incisive picture, sharply dressed in black, as he takes a breather between takes.

His last box office hit was the thriller, Humraaz (2002), but Bobby has had many releases since then. He's played a host of protagonists in different situations facing challenges - man vs. destiny (Soldier), man vs. fate (Gupt), the wily playboy brother (Dillagi) and a freedom fighter (Shaheed Bhagat Singh) to name a few.

Interesting roles, solid performances, good stories. So why isn't Bobby Deol 'hot' at the box office?

He laughs and shrugs his shoulders, "It's hard to tell what will be labelled a hit and will find box office success. If everyone knew what was the successful formula then we would only have hit films. For example Dillagi (produced by older brother Sunny Deol) did average business in India but was a resounding success abroad.Eventually Indians living in other countries, and the second and third generation Indian in India and abroad will influence the way the media is heading and the types of films that are being produced. Indian culture is totally different today than it was even a couple of decades ago or in even my father's youth," explains Bobby.

On his craft:

Movies, a place, where the protagonist attempts to portray "the superhero with a common-man touch" -- someone the audience can reach out to, empathise and relate to. Does he choose his roles with these things in mind?

"It's instinctive," he pauses to reflect for a moment. "I think when you grow up in a house where your father is an actor you learn a lot." In the past he's stated one of his favourite roles was the one he essayed in Soldier, "I also enjoyed playing the character in Dillagi," he states matter of factly. "I've always liked thrillers and I feel they go well with the Indian style of cinema."

Co-incidentally his next film slated for release later this month, "Jurm" is also a mystery/thriller. Bobby is understandably excited to have worked with the producer, Ashish Singh, and director Vikram Bhatt both known to him since school days, "As teenagers we did video films together and were always dreaming about what it would be like to work together once we were established. I think this movie is really close to my heart, because all of us were working together."

There seems to be a spate of Indian movies around the partition-theme. Is it a passing trend? "I think it's a combination of things. A chain reaction. I think because the relationship between India and Pakistan has improved, many movies are about the past, and some look to the future," he says.

Bobby is also excited about another forthcoming film Tango Charlie with Ajay Devgan. He reveals, "This film also deals with a similar theme, but with a twist. It's the memoirs of a jaawan from the BSF Force and his experiences from the time he joins duty to the time he quits. It's a poignant story of how he goes to fight a battle and then realises he doesn't understand why he is fighting. The story basically underlines the theme that soldiers are the same everywhere."
Renewing ties:

The true Deol diplomat Bobby refuses to comment on his re-union with Kareena Kapoor on the sets of Dosti-Friends Forever, post their fallout on the set of Ajnabee sometime back. He says. "I have a chilled out attitude and get along well with my colleagues -- what happened is forgotten."

He also won't pick a filmmaker he would ideally like to work with. "All of them. I think they all make our cinema worthy and valuable," he grins.

Anyone he would like to work with in a film that he hasn't worked with yet? Without hesitation he replies, "My father." (Well, an honest answer, at last!) "I am proud of being a Deol. It's been easier to take a step into the industry when you're family is a part of the film industry," he admits, "But once you start, you need to dedicate yourself to your work if you want to be a success and then you are judged on your merit."

After many years, he has incidentally signed a film with the same title as his debut film Barsaat. "I will be the first actor to act in two movies of the same name," he says. "This Barsaat (starring Priyanka Chopra, Bipashu Basu) is totally different from my debut. It's basically a story revolving around Indian culture/family values of the new generation and certain family pressures that the characters have to deal with as well as the topic of divorce which still hasn't been explored at large in Hindi cinema."

Family man Bobby Deol plays obsessive husband
[Interview by Sumana Dey]
Thursday, January 20, 2005

Unlike most Bollywood stars, Bobby Deol has no time for the playboy image. The self-confessed family man would rather party with his two sons than with his film cronies.

"Family! My hobby is my family. I love spending time with them," Deol, in town to promote his new film "Jurm", told IANS.

In the film though, Deol is anything but the happy family man, playing an obsessive, murderous husband.

Director Vikram Bhatt's thriller to be released Feb 11 is the tale of a tycoon (Deol), who falls in love, marries the woman of his dreams (Lara Dutta) and then - surprise - becomes Othello!

After 2002's "Humraaz", this is Deol's second foray into the dark emotional territory of sexual jealousy and marital suspicion.

In "Jurm", Deol's character is accused of murdering his wife. "I don't know, perhaps Bobby looks like a killer or something, which is why he gets those roles," joked co-star Dutta.

The actor would love to do a film with his father Dharmendra and elder brother Sunny. "But", he said regretfully, "The right script hasn't come along."

As a star son and scion of the Dharma production house, Bobby feels that the edge he has over other actors extends only as far his own talent goes.

"It's like this - as a star son, you are given a house. But how you decorate it will depend upon your talents and your taste."

Bobby cannot recall how many films he has made so far, but he knows how many blockbusters he has had.

"One. 'Soldier'," he said without any obvious embarrassment.

"Many stars benefit from the fact that the media makes their films sound larger than they are actually doing," he explained.

Working with Bhatt was a fantastic experience for Deol because the two are childhood friends. In fact, the film's USP, as far as Deol is concerned, is the fact that he got to work with his close friend.

"During the shoot, I took advantage of Vikram in every possible way," he laughed.

Deol's next film is the Priyanka Chopra-Bipasha Basu starrer "Barsaat". The film is about how members of the younger generation, who drift away from traditional family values under the influence of the West, eventually return to their roots.

"I signed 'Barsaat' specifically because I wanted to enter the records as one of those rare actors who have done two films with the same title within a very brief period of time," said Bobby with a straight face.

Incidentally, the music for the forthcoming "Barsaat" will be composed by Nadeem-Shravan, who also scored the music for Bobby's debut film, also called "Barsaat".

Celebrity Interview: Bobby Deol ...

By Subhash K. Jha, Indo-Asian News Service

Mumbai, (IANS) With "Shaka Laka Boom Boom", "Jhoom Baraabar" and "Apne", Bobby Deol, one of Bollywood's most self-effacing stars, is finally coming into his own.

Bobby's career is working out in more ways than one.

"I have been working out religiously lately. You know that one push that you need to do the right thing? I knew I was neglecting myself. But I needed to get into shape for my boxer's role in Anil Sharma's 'Apne'. That was reason enough to start working out. And now I feel more happy and comfortable than ever before," Bobby, for long the star in exile, told IANS.

There is plenty of reason to feel pleased. Bobby has just completed a very unusual film called 'Nanhe Jaisalmer' directed by Samir Karnik who made "Kyun... Ho Gaya Na" with Aishwarya Rai and Viveik Oberoi.

"It took me to a totally new territory. It is unlike anything I have done so far. I play Bobby Deol in the film. And the most surprising part of shooting in Jaisalmer was there were sandstorm and rains together."

Years ago, dad Dharmendra had played himself in Hrishikesh Mukherjee's "Guddi". Now it's Bobby's turn.

And if that honour hasn't turned Bobby's head, try this. A confectioner in Mumbai named Milinda has named a yummy multi-layered cake after Bobby.

"When I heard about the cake I was flattered, honoured and very, very moved. You know we are a large family and we have birthdays all the time. This lady makes all our cakes.

"I know she is fond of me. But I never imagined she'd actually make a cake from all those ingredients that I love. I have a major weakness for sweets. And to me this is a truly emotional homage to my sweet tooth. I don't know if anyone else has a cake named after him."

Bobby's cup of 'wow' runs over. After a lull of nearly three months when he has been working out and spending time with his two sons, Bobby is now into two major films.

"This month it's Suneel Darshan's film "Shaka Laka Boom Boom". Suneel has now moved to a different level. He is moving away from the family-oriented drama. He realises that today's films have to be targeted at the youth.

"Even I'm asked all the time why I don't do more films like 'Soldier' and 'Gupt'. I guess audiences do want to see me in young energetic films and roles. Suneel's new film will be a complete departure. Again, I play a role different from anything I have done so far. I must admit it has shades of grey in it.

"I think our cinema is shedding its skin. Just as people apply facial creams and get facelifts to look younger, our films too are undergoing a change. I am definitely going to be part of that change."

And if you think the excitement ends for this year with Darshan's unorthodox drama, here's more. Bobby teams up with Abhishek Bachchan in Shaad Ali's "Jhoom Baraabar".

"I have never worked with Abhishek before, though I know him very well. Abhishek is great fun. He makes you laugh all the time. We came close to working together in Abbas-Mustan's 'Humraaz'. I think he was terrific in 'Yuva'. I am looking forward to 'Jhoom Baraabar'."

Some eyebrows have been raised about Bobby doing a film for Yash Chopra whose banner Sunny had fallen out with after "Darr". Bobby laughs away the old cold war.

"People have to say something. Why do they need to dig into an old book of feuds for masala? I know my brother had a problem with the banner. But that is long forgotten. We have all moved on. Why hold on to the past specially when it is unpleasant?"

Bobby talks with characteristic fondness about his family: "We all live together. Now that I have stopped being the baby of the family, I feel responsible towards the family. I think I have become more mature in the last few years."

He says he has learned from his past mistakes and is now picking roles carefully.

"I admit I chose roles unwisely. But I don't regret doing any of them. One learns from one's mistakes. Today I am choosing very cautiously. I was very happy being at home for nearly three months. I needed to connect with my sons at this time when they are growing up.

"I remember how Sunny bhaiya and I missed dad during our growing years because he was busy working for his family. I can afford to take it easy. But now it is time to get back to work. I am looking forward to working with Suneel again and with Shaad Ali for the first time."

Bobby talks with some pleasure about "Apne", which is touted as his family film.

"It is not exactly a family film. We Deols aren't producing it. For now we are happy just acting. When it comes to taking a financial risk in film production it's good to be a son-in-law instead of a father-in-law.

" 'Apne' is a family-friend Anil Sharma's film. It is an emotional family film. It is about a father's dreams for his sons. Our dad, Sunny and I are together for the first time. Let's hope the audience is as excited about it as we are. We are looking at a Diwali release."

Any regrets about being so laidback about his career?

"None at all. Some people make plans for their life. I didn't. I am happy with what I have got. Yeah, I missed out on some good roles like Mani Ratnam's 'Yuva'. But that's okay. What isn't meant to be in life won't be. Thankfully, I am becoming more comfortable with people outside the familiar circle. I am ready to break free."

Audiences want to see me in energetic roles: Bobby Deol

From correspondents in Maharashtra, India, 09:00 AM IST

Bobby Deol - I'm really happy for Priyanka Chopra
By Our Bollywood Reporter Ms Divya Chawla

Bobby Deol is elusive, but the actor says that's just him.

"That's the way I am. I've changed my number so frequently, I don't bother to memorise it. No one knows how to reach me. My father-in-law and sister complain about it. But what to do? I can't become more sociable just because that's expected of me. That wouldn't be me."

But fatherhood twice over has compelled Bobby to alter his laidback attitude to life and career. "My two sons adore me. They've made me more responsible. Earlier, I was the youngest and therefore the ladla of the family. No more so. I work out more often -- at least five times a week. Not to look beefy but just to stay fit. If you're healthy, you feel good about life."

Bobby's last few films did not fare well at the box office. But the actor is upbeat about his latest release, Barsaat. "It's a film with family values. But I've done a love triangle before -- Sunny bhaiyya and I were in love with the same girl (Urmila Matondkar) in Dillagi. Barsaat is my first love triangle where I'm with two leading ladies."

He warms up at the mention of his heroines, Priyanka Chopra and Bipasha Basu. "I've worked with them before. Bipasha started her career in Ajnabee. As for Priyanka, I'm really happy to see how far she has come. In fact, I'm proud of both the girls. In Barsaat, we do a state-of-the-art triangle but with a unique twist."

Bobby has a great deal to say about his director.

"Suneel Darshan is the kind of director I'd want to work with repeatedly. In fact, I've already completed another film with him called Dosti. It's about male bonding and also stars Akshay Kumar. Suneel and I've decided to work on another project. The script is yet to be finalised. He's so passionate and devoted to his work that he enthuses everyone on the sets. Contrary to perceptions, I am completely devoted to my work, though I don't go around tom-tomming my commitment. What I've been lacking lately is motivation. I need to re-invent my career. I think Barsaat gives me that opportunity."

The first choice for Barsaat was Akshay Kumar. But Akshay stepped out, and Bobby stepped in. "Akshay and I are buddies," Bobby says. "When he had a date problem with Barsaat and Suneel asked me to step in, I asked Akshay about it. Akshay said he was glad it was me and not someone else. I don't make friends easily. Akshay is one of my few friends in the industry. In fact, his wife Twinkle and I started our careers together in a film coincidentally called Barsaat."

As a producer, the Deols have burnt their fingers. "We lack the business sense of Suneel Darshan. We don't know how to deal with money. Our productions are not commercially viable. Recently, we produced my cousin Abhay Deol's film Socha Na Tha, and we're very proud of it. In fact Sunny bhaiyya is now doing a film with its director Imtiaz Ali."

All three Deols -- Dharmendra and his two sons -- will be seen together in Anil Sharma's as yet unnamed film. "That should be exciting," says Bobby cautiously. "Only the script needs to be worked out properly. We will play our real-life roles of father and sons and it will be a film about a father's dreams for his children. Audiences should like that."

Bobby is hoping Barsaat will be a new beginning for his career. "I hope it makes the kind of impact Suneel Darshan's other films have made. I need a big hit at this point of my career."
