Bobby Deol On The Love Thang
2001 год

Feeling hot, hot hot. The sunshine spreads like golden egg yolk at Wilson College in Charni road. He's foaming up the lens for Indra Kumar's Aashique,. Bobby Deol feels like steam spirit. That he has to boogey in the scorching sun isn't helping matters eithers. "I've been baked completely," he grumbles wiping his sweaty forehead. "I become irritable when I have to shoot in the heat. It saps me. Lets' go into the van." Inside his luxe van , he sighs with relief. His face brightens when he sees Indra Kumar's four-year-old son, Aman. Promptly he gets involved with the child. In his silver shirt and black trousers, he looks like the quintessential matinee star. His eyes crinkle with mischief, while his unruly curls have been mercifully sheared shorter. In a world rife with posturing, BD's affability comes as mint- fresh losenges. After packing off the child with hazaar endearments, he turns to me to wax poetic about his latest Aashique. This is the second time he's co-starring with Karisma Kapoor. The first time they came together was a turnip called Hum To Mohabbat Karega. Remind him about the fiasco and he replies, "There's nothing like a hit or a flop pair. Everything depends on the movie. If it's good it'll run, otherwise it won't. Hum To Mohabbat Karega was a bad movie. Period. When I saw it, I knew nothing could save the it. It's silly to blame the stars for others' goof-ups. Karisma and I make a good pair. And the film will speak for itself." Right at this moment, all's swell with Bobby's world. He's toplined quite a few projects with such names as Abbas-Mustan, Naresh Malhotra, Mahesh Manjrekar, Ramesh Taurani etc. "My career is going just fine," he reassures me. " I'm thrilled with the roles which I'm getting. Frankly, they aren't earth-shattering. but within our masala framework." He shrugs nonchalantly, "These days, I look for heroism in my characters. I like positive characters. I'm playing a cop for the first time in Naresh Malhotra's movie. In Ajnabi, I'm a much married man who gets trapped in mysterious circumstances. "

Talk about his affinity to action-packed roles and he says candidly, "After the success of Soldier and Badal, I felt that aggressive roles worked for me. So I was partial to them. But many liked me in Kareeb too. Really, I don't want to be slotted only as an action hero. I'm doing romantic films too. But doing a love story puts me at a greater risk. That way an action film is safer." Chomping on some chilled watermelon, Bobby takes pain to point out that his track record has been impressive. Out of the 10 releases, he's had in the last five years, five of them have done well. Yet he blanches at the fact that he hasn't got his due from the media. He complains, "Barsaat did reasonably well but the media played it down. Kajol walked away with all the credit in Gupt. I was written off even in Soldier. But the box office collections were a slap on the critics faces. I finally had the last laugh then. "Even though Badal and Bichhoo have done really well, there's been no mention of it in the press. Somehow the movies that do well in the interiors are never considered by the Mumbai press. It irritates me when journalists ask me why I haven't had a hit after Soldier. They forget Bichhoo and Badal. But I'm not complaining. I've certainly had my share of success." Really, Bobby Deol doesn't have a face that he puts on to hard sell himself to the media. "It's a skill which I lack," he smirks. "I've never done it. And I'm not going to start now."

It doesn't bother him that some critics come down heavily on his acting. He explains, "As long as the audience love watching my films and my films do well, I'm happy. The bottom line is that I'm saleable. My distributors know it, so do the film-makers. Otherwise they wouldn't queue up for me. Believe me, I'm not interested in pandering to the critics at all." He's isn't worried about Hrithik Roshan onslaught either. Says he, "You don't have to be No 1 to survive here. My father's had the longest career. He's seen so many heroes come and go. He's still working. I don't envy anyone's success. I don't have such silly insecurtities. Maybe because I come from a secure background. I've seen hits and flops all my life. What's there to worry? I know I'm here stay." Tell him that the frontline directors aren't really screaming from the rooftops about him and he baulks, "What can I say to that?" he asks. "You'll have to ask them this question. I will not tell them to cast me in their films. When they need me, they'll get in touch. But I have my favourite directors who love to work with me. Abbas-Mustan didn't have to telll me that I would be doing their next film. I just knew it. Even Dad never kow-towed. And he had such a large family to look after. So why should I bother?" Those who know Bobby attest that he isn't a nice man to know just before a release. He gets crochety before the day of reckoning. He grins sheepishly, "Who has been telling you all this? Actually that's true. I get tense. I just want to be left alone then. I don't want to listen to any comments about the film. Especially when I know when a film is going to flop. Only I keep praying for it to do well. Sometimes it's really frustrating because I have an acute sense of what will work and what won't." Really? Yes, he states emphatically. "I knew ...Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya won't do well. I didn't enjoy doing that film either. When I saw Kareeb, I felt that it had gone off-track in the second half. Even though I enjoyed doing that film, I knew it wouldn't gell with the audience."

He's summoned for a shot. He's no shrinking violet in front of the camera. He twirls, spinning a quick circle with that mad-dog grin. Just then the police arrives objecting to the song blaring on the loudspeakers. The shoot is stopped. Returning to the van, he plops down, lights another cigarette and says disgustedly, "They've disrupted the shoot despite the fact that we have all the necessary permissions. Something like this can happen only in our country. It's ridiculous how they make you run around for silly things." Bobby Deol complains that social settings make him queasy."I'm really very shy. It's really off-putting to walk into a room to find that you are the centre of attraction. The crowd never lets you forget that you are a star. I can't handle people. Most of them have their own agendas for talking to me. Though I have started seeing through them I'm still not good at it. But I guess that's the price you pay." He learnt modesty early in life and flew straight enough. "I was such a shy kid," he grins. " At school, no one gave me bhav that I was Dharmendra's son. I guess my early training goes a long way in making me so rooted. But in college however things were different. My classmates would be awed by my background. I used to wallow in the attention I got." He talks about unwinding either at home or at his farm house in Khandala after a hard day's work. I'm the happiest when I'm with my family. Most of the time we just sit around in the garden or play pool. I love going to America too. My sister lives there. It's fun shopping in the States. No one recognises me there." Indra Kumar's son is back for Bobby's attention. Bobby Deol loves kids. And it shows. He talks lovingly about Sunny bhaiyya's kids. Seems that the his two kids Karan and Rajvir absolutely dote on their Chachu. He smiles, "I guess kids need to look upto elders when they grow up. I used to look upto bhaiyya."

Talk then veers to his wife. And Bobby Deol preens. He states proudly that marriage had anchored his life. And though it's been five years, he still feels like a newly-wed. "Marriage has done wonders to me," he exults. "I don't know how I survived without Tanya. Tanya is the best thing that has happened to me." And how does his wife feel about all the female adulation, he gets. "She loves it," he blushes. "She's very proud of me. She enjoys my success. She doesn't have to feel jealous about my female fans. She knows she has me. I'm a one-woman man. And she knows that." Rile him that an astrologer has predicted that he'll have an extra- marital affair soon and he frowns. "I don't believe in astrology. Someone even predicted that I'll have twins this year. If that comes true then we'll talk about this. Okay?" Yeah,he'd like to start a family. But there's no hurry. "It will happen when it has to happen," he reasons. "Anyway I think it's a very personal question. Why should anyone else be interested in it?" Point noted. Things have been sorted out with the law-makers. Shooting resumes. He's called for the shot. He dispenses with it in a jiffy. The heat really seems to be getting to him. Sipping cold water he says, "I'm a very normal guy. There are no frills attached to me. Life gives me a high. So does a good meal, a hot cup of tea, a hit film in my kitty, my farmhouse, going to Singapore or even...sharing a joke with my friends." So what's his final take on life? "Take life it as it comes," he replies philosophically. "I never worry about the future. There are so many things beyond our control. No point in fretting about that. Khush raho naa...yaar."
Got that.

'Nobody's a threat to anybody'

Bichhoo It's a warm and sultry afternoon. Strains of a melodious love song can be heard above the din of the generator van at Bombay’s Mehboob Studio. The shooting of Indra Kumar’s Aashiq is in full swing. Bobby Deol has just canned his first shot of the day, for the song sequence being picturised under the guidance of choreographer Lollipop and his pretty assistant, Jyoti.

A break is announced shortly thereafter. Bobby strolls out for a smoke. He seems unfazed by the debacle of his latest release, Hum To Mohabbat Karega. He also seems to have struck a balance of sorts at the box office, with four hits and four flops notched against his name.

His ninth film, Bichhoo, is to release tomorrow. But Bobby refused to acknowledge any kind of Friday blues, as he nonchalantly goes about answering rediff.com's questions. The only ones he ducked were the questions regarding his half-sister, Esha Deol's entry into Bollywood.

What went wrong with Hum To Mohabbat Karega?

I don’t know. I think it was a bad film, that’s why it didn’t work (laughs)!

How would you describe your role in Aashiq? What is it like to work with a director like Indra Kumar?

Aashiq is a romantic film, even though my character is a rather aggressive guy. You could even call it an intense romance. And working with Indra Kumar has been an excellent experience. He is a great director. I've always wanted to work with him and I am lucky that, today, I have got this opportunity to be in his film. He is terrific for an actor as he makes things so simple and easy.

Hum To Mohabbat Karega Lately, the way you act seems greatly influenced by your father's acting style. Are you trying to imitate him? Or is it that you are feeling pressured to measure up to him and your brother?

No, I am not really trying to act like my dad. It’s just that I have a father who’s done those roles. If it was somebody else doing those films, you would not be asking that question. Basically, my father’s done so many films. If I do any film resembling his film, then people say I am trying to imitate him. Since I am his son, I tend to look like him which, I guess, is quite natural.

And I have never thought myself to be under any sort of pressure as far as being my father's son or Sunny's brother is concerned. It’s the people who come and ask me. Why should I be under pressure? People are now watching my films because they want to watch me. If they wanted to see me as a star son or a star brother, they watched my first film. After that, it is my performance which they come to see. So I don’t think I am under any kind of pressure.

Are you planning a shift of image -- from action to comedy? Where do you see yourself five years from now?

I am not considering shifting my image from action to comedy or romantic comedy. I have done or am doing films which are action-oriented, comedy roles and romantic-comedy roles. Believe me, it is not an attempt to change my image.

BobbyAnd, five years from now, I still see myself doing films. I've done eight films so far; I think I still have a long way to go. I don’t want to create any particular kind of image, I just want to do different types of films. This is rather difficult in our kind of cinema because, once you get labelled in a certain image, you are stuck forever.

But I still want to do different kind of films and I am waiting for the right scripts, which do not come my way very easily. Actually, what has happened is that all my action roles have been appreciated much more, while the films in which I played romantic roles have not fared to well. So I have been bracketed in the action image category. This is a reality I cannot ignore.

The inevitable question -- do you feel intimidated by Hrithik, Abhishek and the Khans?

I think it's a whole lot of bullshit! Everybody has their own space. Everybody does their own kind of films, nobody's a threat to anybody. I admit Hrithik is really good, but this thing about the Khans dominating Bollywood, it all sounds as if a war is on. I think it is really all just media hype.

Bobby Deol spoke to Sanjay Singh Badnor.

'What's more important in a script is how your character is carved' - Bobby Deol
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Rohini Bhandari

4 July 2007, 10:58 AM
Bobby Deol has had one too many film releases this year. Shaka Laka Boom Boom, Jhoom Bababar Jhoom and Apne have been released over the last two months and they all have Bobby Deol in common. What's more, the actor is now gearing up for his next release Naqaab, which hit theatres on 13 July.

In an interview with Businessofcinema.com, the younger Deol holds forth on Naqaab and his other three forthcoming films namely Nanhe Jaisalmer, Ek and Roshan.

Excerpts:

After the release of Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, has a film with the Yash Raj banner changed your positioning in the industry?

When I was going to hear the script of Jhoom Barabar Jhoom I knew Abhishek and Preity were already in the film and I didn't know what I was going to hear from Shaad because I would not do a film if I didn't have a good role. For me the length of the role doesn't matter, but I wanted to hear the script and after I heard it I loved the role.

Yes, it definitely makes a difference to an actor because Yash Raj is a good banner. They make good films and they always spend a lot on their movies. People believe in their films because they try and make good films and that is why audience goes to see their movies.

How was your experience working in Apne, as an actor, son and brother?

Apne is a real and deeper film as compared to other films made on families. Family films are usually very superficial but Apne gives more depth in a relationship. In Apne you see a family working together after many years.

For me, it was a dream come true to work with my dad. For my dad too it was a dream come true because he wanted to work with both his sons. Both Sunny and I wanted to work with dad in a film. The USP of Apne is my father.

As an actor when you go on set you don't think of the opposite person as anything but an actor. When you are performing you have to play your character because the other character that you have read about is standing in front of you. I was very nervous on the first day because my father knows me inside out, so if I am faltering he would know of it.

A lot of your films have been releasing since May and will continue to release year long.

I worked on these films last year and all of them are releasing this year. I started Apne last year but there were long gaps between every schedule so it took one whole year.

I also did Jhoom Barabar Jhoom last year but Yash Raj completes their films quickly and plans its releases.

Nanhe Jaisalmer was shot in April last year and Shaka Laka Boom Boom also happened around the same time.

I know I have a lot of sleepless nights coming ahead. Every film means a lot to an actor, it's like my child. Good, bad or ugly I just want them to do well.

Your forthcoming film Naqaab has a strong feeling of déjà vu, considering it is a thriller directed by Abbas Mastan and stars Akshaye Khanna and you, just like Humraaz…

Since we all are together it has a feeling of Humraaz but when you see the film, the twists and turns are different. A thriller has the same pattern but when you see the film you realize the difference. My three thriller films with Abbas Mastan - Ajnabee, Soldier and Humraaz were all different.

You share such a good rapport with Abbas Mastan and you have done so many films with them. Has there ever been a time when you may have refused any of their film offers?

I will never say no to Abbas Mastan. Sometimes writers come and narrate subjects to me, which are of the same style as an Abbas Mastan film would be, so I tell them that if Abbas Mastan are the directors, I will do it, because I know they can do it. I believe in them completely.

I worked with them at the beginning of my career for four years and then suddenly there was a gap. So I was very excited when I got this project, Naqaab.

How much does it matter to be working with a reputed director or producer?

I have never worked with someone who is making his first film. I don't like to interfere with the director's work. As an actor I just want to be an actor. So for me it is very important to know the work of the director in order to work with them.

I don't know if my gut instincts will always be right and if I have never seen a directors work I will not know how to judge him.

You are also doing another film with Samir Karnik (director Nanhe Jaisalmer)?

I am doing Roshan, which is directed and produced by Karnik. It is like Nanhe Jaisalmer. I had heard Roshan's script while working on Nanhe Jaisalmer and it also stars Dwij (from Nanhe Jaisalmer).

Can you tell us something about Nanhe Jaisalmer?

Nanhe Jaisalmer has a child in it so everyone thinks it is a children’s film but it a family film. It is about how strong your imagination can be, if you really believe in it and use it the right way. It doesn't preach but is a meaningful film.

I play myself in the film, which is about the child. I loved the script and it is a feel good film.

After a career span of 12 years do you still await an author backed role?

I'm still waiting for something like that to come my way. The role that I did in Jhoom Barabar Jhoom was interesting and well written, but I want to do a film like Ghayal, Phool Aur Patthar, Pratigya, Chupke Chupke because there were great characters.

What's more important in a script is how your character is carved. You may or may not play the main lead but if the character is written well, it will always be nice.

I have tried to communicate this to my directors and producers and now things are changing, everybody looks at me in a different light so may be I will get better opportunities.

Bobby Deol

His was scheduled to be Bollywood's most well designed launch ever. Papa Dharmendra and big brother Sunny did everything they could to ensure that Bobby Deol announced his arrival in style. Several girls were screen-tested to play the lead opposite this stunning star son, before Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia's daughter Twinkle, became the chosen one.

None other than Shekhar Kapur was assigned the task of making the young Deol's entry into films a memorable one. But long before the film could be completed, Kapur walked out of the project and Rajkumar Santoshi (who had earlier turned around Sunny's career with 'Ghayal' (1990)) took over. Finally, when 'Barsaat' (earlier titled 'Badal') hit the screen in 1995, the tall expectations and much anticipation built around it couldn't ensure a rousing welcome at the ticket window.

Although the film proved to be an average grosser, Bobby's dreamy eyes, stylish curls and cute dimples turned on the magic. And overnight, this star-son became hot property.

However, his next release 'Gupt' (1997), came nearly two years after 'Barsaat'. This murder mystery proved to be a huge hit and pushed the star's stock skywards. It was no mean feat for a solo hero big-budget venture that vested a lot of faith in Bobby's star appeal.

Naturally, everyone hoped 'Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya' (1997), which marked the debut of Miss World Aishwarya Rai, would get an even warmer welcome. Eventually, this over-hyped love story turned out to be a complete washout.

Meanwhile, the handsome star took a break for a lavish wedding with the light-eyed Tanya Ahuja, a business magnate's daughter. In keeping with the Deol tradition, Bobby's wedding was strictly out of bounds for the press, with several bodyguards and members of the family assigned the all-important task of keeping nosy photographers at bay.

When Vidhu Vinod Chopra decided to turn outright commercial with a popular love story he signed Bobby to play the small-town hero of 'Kareeb' (1998) opposite newcomer Neha. The star was meticulously groomed for a part that was crucial to the film's overall appeal; that of a mischievous boy who falls hopelessly in love with a beautiful girl and ends up losing her because of his tendency to lie his way through life.

Bobby was suitably earnest and did earn a few good reviews for his effort. But Chopra's dream came crashing down with a resounding thud at the box-office. As is usually the case, this also brought Bobby's star status into question.

But all doubts were quickly dispelled with another thrilling hit in the form of Abbas-Mastan's whodunit, 'Soldier' (1998). Once again, Bobby deserved credit for its success, since he was cast opposite rank newcomer, Preity Zinta, and was aided by a totally non-starry cast.

While his career graph was taking this steady swing upward, brother Sunny (who apparently monitors Bobby's professional life very closely) turned producer with a venture called 'London'. The film was to have both brothers in the lead along with Karisma Kapoor.

After a huge publicity splash, 'London' was shelved due to differences between Sunny and director Gurinder Chaddha. While the fourth estate went to town with reports about the end of Sunny's dream project, he decided to finish the task at hand and announced a film called 'Dillagi' (1999), which he would produce and direct. Karisma walked out and Urmila stepped in to keep the Deols company.

Bobby delivered the most sensational performance of his short career under the watchful eye of big brother and mentor. As the spoilt young philanderer who has no care in the world for anything except his own needs, he was absolutely stunning to watch.

The failure of 'Dillagi' didn't affect his fortunes because it was his act that saved the day for this cliched film. Next came 'Badal' (2000) a mindless action caper that worked well in the interiors despite being a fairly ordinary concoction.

Even as he tries to recover from the disastrous 'Hum To Mohabbat Karega', he has a fresh challenge in the form of 'Bicchoo', which releases next week. This could be the acid test for Bobby, since it takes on Abhishek Bachchan's debut film, 'Refugee', another designer launch for another star son...

Superstar is a word he has always associated with his brother Sunny or father Dharmendra.

Bobby Deol has never had the pleasure of associating the word with himself.

Not that he is unduly worried. He is happy to find his own happiness levels.

His Ajnabee releases this Friday. It is, according to him, a very bold film. Excerpts from an interview with the actor:

You seem to enjoy working with Abbas-Mustan. Soldier, Ajnabee, two more films in the offing with them...?

Yes, we share a great rapport professionally and personally. I trust them with my life. I know they'll never let me down.

They wanted me to do a two-hero film. That's a first for me. But working with Akshay was marvellous. We hit it off so well.

Is Ajnabee a remake of Consenting Adults?

Ajnabee is a thriller.

I play a married man trapped by mysterious circumstances. The film does have a lot of romance and action. But it's not based on Consenting Adults.

I can't say too much -- that would give the plot away. The film deals with a bold theme; Indian cinema has not seen anything like this before.

How would you describe your profession?

It's not easy. We work under the most difficult conditions. Try shooting in a desert, for example. The sand keeps flying into your mouth, hair and eyes.

There are times when we have no proper place to stay, no restrooms or bathrooms. Our studios are like ovens.

The junta is enamoured by the glamour. They are blind to the grind we have to go through.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not complaining, I love acting.

Are you happy with the way your career is shaping up?

I couldn't have asked for more. My audiences love watching my films. My producers and directors know my potential. I've had my share of successes and flops and have learnt to balance both.

Whenever I'm feeling low, I look at dad's (Dharmendra) careergraph. He survived many a superstar.

Which other films are you working on?

Besides Ajnabee, I am working on two other films with Abbas-Mustan.

I am also doing Mahesh Manjrekar's film costarring Priyanka Chopra. It will go on the floors soon. I liked Vaastav , so I'm looking forward to working with Mahesh.

There is also a David Dhawan film, a Naresh Malhotra film with Vinod Khanna and Amisha Patel. It is an action film in which I play a cop for the first time. Next year will be a mixed bag.

Sunny must be overjoyed with Gadar , especially after so many flops...

No one but Sunny could have done that role. The audiences love him and he deserves it. My brother is a great actor. Just because he doesn't harp about his achievements, people don't talk about his work.

I saw the film in the theatre and enjoyed the experience. It was very gratifying to see his hard work pay off.

How are you coping with fatherhood?

It's just super, though it hasn't sunk in yet.

Being a parent is a huge responsibility. Your child becomes the centre of your world. I stayed with my wife (Tanya Deol) for 25 days when son child was born because I wanted to make sure I wouldn't miss a thing.

I am only now beginning to understand the joys of parenthood. After a long day, I find myself anxious to get home. My son is the best thing to happen to me after Tanya.

After a long day, I find myself anxious to get home. My son is the best thing to happen to me after Tanya.

Bobby Deol is identifiable on his own'

Syed Firdaus Ashraf | February 17, 2005

Ask Bobby Deol how he would define himself as an actor and pat comes the reply, "I am a mixture of everything -- comedy, action, thriller and romantic roles. I have everything in me!"

Bobby admits, though, that he has been lucky with suspense and thrillers. His latest film, Jurm, is in the same genre. "But let me add that a good film works, irrespective of its genre," he says.

It has been 10 years since your first film, Barsaat, released.
Do you feel happy that people no longer identify you only as Sunny's brother or Dharmendra's son?

Definitely. I am very happy about this. I have reached a level where Bobby Deol is identifiable on his own.
But I still have a long way to go when compared to them. No actor can be satisfied with past laurels. I don't want to talk more on this because I don't want to sound pseudo.

How far does it help one's film career if his/ her family is from the film fraternity?

You will get your first release. After that, you must have talent and luck. Besides, only hard work pays off in this industry.
People say you get everything on a platter but there is also a drawback. People expect too much from you. There is always the fear of comparing your acting skills with your father, uncle etc. Even if you are good, people don't say it. Believe me, it is more difficult for an actor to prove himself if he is from a film family, as compared to an outsider in the industry.
If you are newcomer and even half as good, people will say you are amazing. On the contrary, if you are half as good and have your father's name tag, people will not praise your acting skills. Rather, they will compare you with your father.

Are you playing a negative character in Jurm?

I play a rich man in love with and married to Lara Dutta. I am obsessed with her and start doubting her. That's when things start going wrong in my life.
It is a Hindi film and a thriller. The story is such that I cannot say more on it. There are negative shades and it is definitely different from my other films.
Thrillers suit my image, so I hope this film works for me.

Yes, your thrillers are lucky for you.

All my films are same for me. I want thrillers, love, comedy and war films to work for me.

Why do you think your thrillers work more than your romantic films?

Every actor gets an image without wanting one. A lot of romantic heroes want an action hero tag but they are unable to succeed even though their films are good.
But I see the trend changing lately.
Good films will run and people will watch it irrespective of whether it is suspense or a comedy.

Are your expectations from Jurm?

You always expect. Sometimes, you feel you could have performed better if the film does not do well. We hope things click but the audiences are the final judge.
I am working with Milind Soman and Gul Panag for the first time, and for the second time with Lara [their first film together was Bardaasht].

Any favourite songs from the film?

Anu Malik has composed two songs and Anand Raj Anand has composed other songs. I love all the songs but my son loves Rabba rabba. That is my favourite too.

Is it true that Vikram Bhatt, producer Ashish Singh and you made a film in your school days?

Vikram and Ashish are my school friends. We've always wanted to be a part of this profession.
We made a film in school called Manav. That was like a workshop for us. Vikram directed it and Ashish and I starred in it. A copy is rusting somewhere in my cupboard, I think.
I always wanted to be an actor. My father inspired me since I was three years old.
We three friends have worked together and that is the biggest selling point of Jurm. Vikram and I even share the same birthday -- January 27.

What kind of roles would you like to take up?

I have done all kinds of roles -- comedy, action, romance and thrillers. Just name the genre and I've done it.
Action and thrillers have worked for me but my all-time favourite is Dillagi, directed by my brother Sunny. 23rd March 1933, Shaheed was another film I really enjoyed doing.
At present, I am doing Barsaat, a social love story costarring Bipasha Basu and Priyanka Chopra. I am also doing films with Imtiyaz Ali and Abbas-Mastan.

You seem to be promoting your cousin Abhay Deol, who's debuting in Socha Na Tha.

Yes. I was surprised to know he was a very good actor. He has done a superb job in his debut film.
I wanted Ayesha Takia to debut with this film but, unfortunately, that did not work and Tarzan released first.

Your past films have flopped at the box-office, including Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyon.

(Interrupts) I don't want to talk about my past. It is over and I don't talk about that. Let us look at the future.

What do you think went wrong with Bardaasht, your earlier film with Lara?

I don't know, man! It is the trend that keeps changing.
All I know is that I keep working hard and never get disappointed by my failures

Bobby, babies and desi dils!
Saturday, January 20, 2007 19:21 IST

Bollywood hunk Bobby Deol turns a year older on January 27. He talks to Nilufer Qureshi about living, loving and growing up.

Bobby D!

Sounds like the name of a hip hop rapper. But the face of an Italian hunk. He has the body of a tough Spanish matador… but the heart remains basically desi. The quintessential cosmo son of the soil has matured. Innocent baby Deol had become worldly wise and reticent - and dare we say, grown up?

He laughs aloud. "Babies never grow up. I'm the youngest of the siblings and I've been treated like a baby always. Even now I'm a very pampered child. I have grown in years, but for my family I'm still the baby. I want it to remain this way. I really enjoy all the attention and pampering."

Still, had the boy been in a crиche the past two years? How would he look at the last two years of his life?

"Time flies fast, I don't know where these past couple of years have gone but I have only learnt from my experiences. I have matured somewhat. I can't believe that we're nearing the end of January already. It seems like yesterday that I was with my family bringing in the New Year in Khandala. Things are looking good, and that's great."

But we couldn't help probe the fact that Bobs was a 'heart' guy. Hardly going by the head. Did he consider that an asset or a liability?

He's quick to respond. "Definitely an asset. When you think with your mind and do things, you tend to get selfish. Your actions are all planned, perhaps motivated. When your actions are from the heart you do things that you believe in. Everything is honest and straight. That's the way I am."

Still, 'heart'man seemed to have isolated himself a bit lately?

"True" he confesses. "I've realized that isolation gives you more space and I genuinely need that. I'd rather spend time at home with family and friends who care about me. Rather than meet strangers and constantly be on my guard. At home I can be myself. I love partying once in a while, but now I want to put my energy in the right direction and stay focused."

Bobby Deol : My dad is a rock star
22 / 05 / 2007

Talking about their dad Dharmendra is both Sunny and Bobby Deol's favourite thing to do. PT caught the three macho musketeers up and about on a ‘sunny' May morning for a tete-a-tete. The Deols have just wrapped up shooting for Anil Sharma's Apne in which they all star together for the very first time. It was a dream come true, as they had hunted for a script for years in which they could all act together, and their dream was fulfilled with Apne. Sunny and Bobby matched their legendary father's histrionic skills, frame to frame, sometimes finding the situations more real than reel.

So, how cool a dad is Dharmendra? "My dad is a rockstar and a Greek God. He is a complete man and that's why he's the coolest. We all play cards or joke around about the good ol' days or get yelled at for something Bobby and I did wrong," says Sunny. "He's got a perfect face and, even at this age, there is no one more handsome than him. He truly is a gifted man," he adds. Bobby nods in unison, and says, "He makes the word ‘cool' happen. My dad's my jaan, my life."

To which the doting father says, "I think my sons are very modest when it comes to their looks. The most endearing quality about Sunny and Bobby is that they are very down to earth and love their family and friends unconditionally." Metrosexual, ubersexual and retrosexual are tags alien to Dharmendra. "I don't know what these titles mean. To me a man is a man. I'm just an earthy person from Punjab," he says.

Who would be the first to charm a beautiful girl among the three? "It has to be my father," laughs Sunny. To which Bobby exclaims, "I agree ‘cos the woman won't even look at us if our father is around!" Anything special they want to gift their dad? "I wish I could snap my fingers and take away all of Dad's pain. When I was a kid, I saw the villain beating up my dad in a film and I got very upset. One day when that actor came home, I took out my toy gun and was ready to shoot him dead," says Sunny emotionally even as Bobby says, "Obviously, I would do anything for my father, just like bhaiyya."

Dharmendra looks at them and says, "Anything for papa... I am a proud father. My sons love me and it's genetic ‘cos everyone right from my parents to now us are like that," says the patriarch, who believes "life is a beautiful struggle to achieve anything close to your heart."

Has Sunny ever been called Ajay (his real name) by dad? "Not really. Sunny is what it's always been. Ajay was my school name and Vijay was Bobby's," says Sunny. If Dharmendra had to romance any of today's heroines, who would he choose? "They are all very pretty and talented. I would want to star with all of them in one film and romance all of them! How's that?" he laughs. On a more serious note, I think instead of religion, human beings should start practising humanity. We all pray every morning, but do we practise what our prayers ask us to? No, we don't and it pains me," says the actor who has no regrets in his chequered life.

Friendship back in flavour

ANUJ KUMAR
Real life friends Akshay Kumar and Bobby Deol play pals in `Dosti' opening today.

Akshay Kumar and Bobby Deol

Be it Jai and Veeru of "Sholay" or Mohan and Ramu of Satyen Bose's "Dosti," male bonding has always been a staple theme for Bollywood. This Friday, Suneel Darshan is at it again.

His "Dosti" stars Akshay Kumar and Bobby Deol. What is more, here the tagline `Friends Forever' has meaning as Bobby and Akshay are buddies in real life. So is Suneel, for it is Akshay's seventh film with the Darshan family (Suneel's brother Dharmesh is also a filmmaker), and Bobby also has been a regular in the Darshan scheme of things. "We met for the first time on the sets of `Ajnabee' and became friends forever. It is his simplicity that attracted me," says Bobby. Echoes Akshay, "I don't believe that there has to be similarity between two persons for friendship to click. In fact, friendship means accepting the other person as he is. There is no pretence in our relationship. We don't meet for months but whenever we do [there is] chemistry. Plus, our wives are friends and so are our kids."

Says Bobby, "That we both have a common man' s image might have worked in our favour but you don't choose friends according to conditions. It just clicks. People say Akshay steals scenes from his co-stars, but I have never faced this problem. We are spontaneous actors. Many times, particularly in comedy scenes, he has saved me from tricky situations."

Hard working

However, Bobby has an issue with Akshay: "He just works too hard and that at times makes me feel bad, for I can't match his propensity to be always in action." Akshay agrees, "This has been the case. Even my family members complain. It is only when I am ill, which is rarely the case, that I take a break."

Of late there has been a twist in the tale of friendship. Post "Dil Chahta Hai" the friendship concept has become more westernised, with directors doing away with the "I can die for my friend" feeling. Akshay, who firmly believes in the concept of friendship, says that the film will bring to the fore the conventional value of friendship. "The film has been made from the heart and has a universal appeal to it. It is not just for the multiplexes."

Bobby, on the other hand, is not happy with the way male friendship is being seen in society and cinema. "Today if you hold a man's hand in public you are considered to be an infidel. I come from a family where I have been taught to die for a friend in need."

On the career front, Akshay is on a high with his films, particularly comedies, doing well. This has been an especially good year for him with "Waqt" and "Garam Masala" doing well. Even when "Deewane Hue Pagal" flopped, the onus was not on him. Akshay may have taken time to understand that action has multiple meanings in cinema, but he has done it in style.

If in "Dhadakan" he proved he could make people sob with him, post "Hera Pheri" he has been continuously proving that he can effortlessly send the audience into splits.

Hardly any actor has gone through the kind of image shift he has. Last year he played a character sexually assaulted by a girl and people still lapped it up. "Aitraaz" was a rare case where casting against the image worked at the box office.

Akshay as usual doesn't want to go into the details. "I don't want to go into the hows... I am happy people came to see the character rather than Akshay. It is satisfying as an actor," he says. "When you start you can't take too many risks, particularly when you come from a non-film background. I wanted to establish myself and since I was trained in martial arts the action tag came naturally to me. With films like `Jaanwar' and `Sangharsh' I tried to change that. Fortunately people accepted me."

But the media still introduces him as an action star.

"I don't feel bad because that is my primary identity and I would love to do action again if a different script was offered to me."

Comedy expert

Talking about his evolution as a comedy expert, Akshay says it has to do with his upbringing in a middle class house in Delhi. "In Delhi people speak a very informal kind of language. I have tried to incorporate that old Delhi style in my mannerisms and dialogue delivery."

For Bobby the going has not been that fine at the box office. His last release "Barsaat" was also an average earner. "I no longer want to be rated according to hits and flops. From the beginning of my career I have been trying different roles so that I don't get slotted and will continue to do so."

He is peeved with the media for it calls him an action hero simply because his father and brother have done action films. "Somehow people think action heroes don't have to act. And if you have done two-three films of one genre, you get branded for the whole of your life. My father suffered because of this. That's why I made it a point to keep on doing different subjects. Then I was asked why don't you have any image like your father," quips Bobby.

Bobby feels his not knowing how to manipulate the media in his favour also has something to do with it. "Some actors just want to be seen in the media. I can't do this." For now he wants to ride down to Chandigarh, again for a family friend - Anil Sharma who has put the whole Deol family together in his forthcoming film "Apne".

"This is the first time that Papa (Dharmendra), Sunny bhaiya and I are working together. This is the story of a father who wants to see his sons achieve in life what he could not."
