‘I am fond of Govinda’ The gutsy Esha Deol on her latest release Hijack and more What was the best thing about playing an air-hostess in Hijack? I had never played an air-hostess before and the chance to play a very gutsy, brave one was very exciting.
Is it true that your co-star Shiney Ahuja and you did not get along? The fact that both of us are introverts and would head for our make-up vans after a shot must have sparked-off the rumours. He’s a fabulous actor and I would love to work with him again.
Why do you do such few films? I signed several films after Dhoom and ended up doing some film which did not do much for my career. I’m being extra choosy now.
Are you very short-tempered, as reported? I’m not short-tempered, but very clear about right and wrong and very honest in my reaction.
What is your one fitness secret? Don’t eat after eight!
Which film would you have loved to be a part of? Taare Zameen Par, I loved it!
Why were you replaced by Sagrika Ghatge in Raftaar? I was not replaced, I could not do the film as the dates were clashing with another film.
Will we see you and your mom in a film together? Yes, mom is very keen to revive her production house and we are going through many scripts, but nothing has been finalised as yet!
Will your sister Aahna be directing it? Aahna is too young and presently enjoying herself. It will take another couple of years before she will be ready to direct.

Esha Deol’s Goan birthday Showbiz Desk While the girl celebrated her last birthday rather religiously – in Tirupati, this year’s celebrations were expected to be ‘wild’. After all she was in Goa, the land of sand and surf, shooting for a film. But Esha reveals otherwise. “No, there were no wild plans for me,” she says, “There was no respite from work. But there were no complaints either since Goa is one of my favourite places.”
About the most special thing that happened on her birthday... Well, mom Hema flew down to Goa to spend the day with her. “Yes, mom was here. She always spends my birthday with me, whichever part of the globe I may be in,” says Esha, “She has come to Jim Corbett and Cape Town, too, in the past... What was your initial reaction to the idea of your big film Seeta Aur Geeta being made into a serial? Honestly, I wasn’t too happy. But later, I felt that since it was on TV, it’s okay. I wouldn’t have liked it if a film had been made.
But Chaalbaaz was based on Seeta Aur Geeta and it was a hit. It was based on my film, but this is a remake.
The serial is coming 37 years after the film. Do you think today’s generation will connect with it? Seeta Aur Geeta is an evergreen subject. It is humorous, light-hearted and projects the concept of good versus bad. And since it has the girl playing the central role, it is even better. Heroines rarely get a chance to do such roles.
Of the two characters Seeta and Geeta, which is your favourite? I like both of them, but I think I am more like Geeta, rather I have become like her, outspoken and aggressive. My daughters used to love watching the film when they were children.
Tell us some memorable incidents that happened during the shoot. There are many memories but the one scene that gave me the jitters was the one where I’m perched on top of a fan. When Ramesh Sippy narrated the scene to me I thought it was a joke. He told me it was important as it had a funny incident preceding it. Still, I was quite scared and I asked him to do it himself first.
Frankly, whenever Rameshji asked me to do something that was unusual I made him do it first, like the tanga scene in Sholay. I had never driven a tanga in my life and was quite apprehensive. Another incident that comes to my mind is the skating scene with Sanjeev Kumar. It was great fun to be on the skates and the song Hawa ke saath saath filmed on us was beautiful. In fact, all the songs composed by R D Burman in the film were great. I hear that they are also using the songs in the serial.
Have you seen any episodes? No, but whatever I have seen of the promos looks good.
Do you think Anjorie Alagh fits the roles of Seeta and Geeta? That depends on her performance.
Would you be happy if your daughter Esha played the role if the film were to be remade? I’m sure she would like to do it but I don’t want her to play the characters that I have done. I want her to do something different. She is a fine actress.
Are you planning to do any movies with daughter Esha? Yes we are doing a film together. It is being directed by Deepa Sahi.
Years ago you had done a serial, Nupur. That was my debut directorial venture and it explored classical dance. The dialogue was written by Gulzar. The serial was of 13 episodes and that is how I like it. Sometime back, I had done Kamini Damini, which went on for 200-250 episodes, I couldn’t continue with it, it is too tough for me.
Recently you judged the show Dancing Queen on Colors. Are you open to more such shows? Yes, I enjoyed it, though I was a little shocked with the way the girls were dressed. Even some of their dance movements shocked me. But I guess that is the way it is today.

"MUMBAI - Esha Deol, in her own words, is bruised black and blue. After participating in a camel race in Jaisalmer and doing road stunts in Goa for her mother’s production “Tell Me Oh Khuda”, she can barely move a limb.
The director Mayur Puri and the fight master Parvez Bhai forgot I was a girl and therefore delicate in my own way. This has been the most physically demanding experience of my life, Esha, who was last seen in “Hijack”, told IANS.
Twenty-seven years after Hema Malini got on a camel in the Rajasthan deserts to sing the haunting “Ae dil-e-nadaan” in Kamal Amrohi’s “Razia Sultan”, Esha rode the camel like a pro in Jaisalmer.
In ‘Razia Sultan’, mom was singing on the camel. I was wincing in pain. For 10 days I rode the camel like a professional for a camel race along with Arjan Bajwa, Chandan Roy Sanyal and Sudhandhu Pande. I was the only girl in the team. But people seemed to forget that. But if I may say so, I had the best calves on display in the typical Rajasthani camel-rider’s costume, the kurta lungi and all, said Esha, 28.
For the first few she was in a daze.
The seat on top of the camel is so rough and so unfriendly to comfortable riding, my knees and inner thighs were constantly bruised. When my mother saw I was hurt, she was livid. But I told her to chill. And we continued shooting on the camels for a good week after that. Now I can call myself an expert camel rider, sad Esha.
Her training in kick-boxing held her in good stead.
For the last two years I’ve subconsciously been training for this film. I needed to get physically fit. Which I’ve done. And I needed to mature emotionally. That too, I think, I’ve achieved.
She says shooting “Tell Me Oh Khuda” has been like shooting three different films.
We shoot in three different continents with three different cinematographers. So it’s like doing three different films. In Turkey I shot with Rishi Kapoorji and in Jaisalmer I’m shooting with Vinod Khannaji.
Now Esha wants to bring her father Dharmendra and mom together for the last segment of the film.
It’s a dream for me to have them in the same film as me, so that one day I can tell my grandchildren, ‘I made this happen’. And I will make it happen."

Dancers from Mumbai and Kolkata will perform a variety of dance forms such as Kathak, Odissi, Manipuri and Kathakali. “My grandmother was a great promoter of new talent. She was the one responsible for introducing my mother to classical dance,” says Esha. Esha and Ahana say performing at the tribute is very special as they both shared a loving relationship with their grandmother.
“My mother was very supportive of all the art forms. She supported young girls for their Arangetrams financially. Initially, Dharamji was not keen on Esha and Ahana learning dance. But now he extends his full support and is in awe of them,” says Hema. Esha reveals that as children, both the sisters were reluctant to learn dance and their grandmother was glad when they finally got around to learning it. “Grandmother was very strict with our mother with regard to dancing. However, she was always lenient with us and mom would exclaim how unfair it was,” laughs Ahana.
“Grandmother would give me tips to help me improve my dance and show me how to be more graceful and expressive. I would go to her for advice. We would even paint together. Performing at her tribute is going to be emotional. She was truly an inspiration,” recollects Esha. Ahana remembers her grandmother as a friendly, humourous and powerful woman. “I have learnt a lot from her. She was very affectionate and we would have a lot of fun together,” remembers Ahana.
Upcoming dancers Vishal Krishna, Renjish Nair, Tanushree Das, Aparna Mane and Mahiri dancers will perform at the tribute. This year onward, Natyavihar Kalakendra will be honouring Ravindra Jain and Dr Kanak Rele, from music and dance fields."

Just back from the editing studios of her home-production Tell Me Oh Khuda, Esha Deol may not have been visible on the big screen for two years, but she’s been busy. Esha’s eyes twinkle as she gets candid on her soon-to-release film, famous parents and sister Ahana.
You seem very close to your dad? Yes, like all girls I am very close to dad and can share everything with him. He’s a very warm human being and just smothers you with his love. But I am closer to mum. We are like buddies –– we share clothes, shop online together and when abroad, I take her partying. Even professionally, we are compatible, as she is tech savvy with the computer and her ipad. Your dad was always possessive and protective of you, and was never really keen on you doing films. How come he agreed to work with you in Tell Me Oh Khuda (TMOK)? Even I was shocked when he said, yes. Earlier when we would be discussing, I would casually ask him to be part of the film and his response was always, hain main sochta hoon. Then one fine day he came home and said he’d do it. At first I couldn’t believe my ears. I think God answered my prayers. It was like a dream come true.
What was the first day of shoot with him like? I remember we were shooting in Goa. The night before the shoot I would get up every one hour and wonder how it was going to be. But once the camera rolled, we were in character, like any two professionals. Later he told me that he too had a restless night. Basically we are similar in nature and the chemistry between us will be there for all to see in the film.
Being your home production, you must be involved in several other departments as well? True! In all my earlier films, it was just acting, dubbing and promotions. But with Tell Me Oh Khuda, I have been there since we started bouncing off story ideas right up to the ongoing post-production and the recording of the title song. I am enjoying the entire process throughly. I have learnt so much about filmmaking, especially editing and also realised how much hard work goes ino a project. Thankfuly we have a very good team. The background score is given by Sanjay Wandrekar who did the background for 3 Idiots and Munnabhai, and Rameshwar S. is the editor. He worked on Dhoom.
Is TMOK your comeback film? I guess that’s because my last film was Hijack, which released in 2008. But I can’t hold a placard in my hand saying that it is not my comeback. I was always here but doing my own thing. I was in Chicago at my cousin’s for a while where I did an advanced course in ballet dancing. I had a great time walking on the beaches, shopping at the stores, something which is not a comfortable thing here. It was rejuvenating after having worked for seven years. I was getting offers too, but what excited me when I started out at the age of 18 no longer impressed me as I had matured over the years. And then mom was keen on reviving our home production, so I wanted to work in our own film.
So what is the film about? Tell Me... is a family drama, but with a lot of momentum and visuals, because it is the journey of a girl’s search for her father with her two friends (Arjan Bajwa and Chandan Roy Sanyal).The story travels to Rajasthan, Turkey and Goa and is packed with exciting stuff like a camel race and some stunning action scenes picturised in Goa and Turkey.
What’s your character in the film like? I am playing a regular Mumbai girl, who is bubbly, smart, happy-go-lucky and inspires other girls on how to woo the right boy! I didn’t have to look skinny or voluptuous, just my normal self, and since there is a lot of travelling in the film, I am not dressed glamourously. Mom didn’t want my straight hair so we got it tonged. I identified with my character and was as natural as possible. Since I have a lot of male friends in real life, I have used the lingo I use with them in the film. Arjan is my romantic interest and Chandan plays my childhood buddy.
How was the transition when your mom Hema Malini replaced Mayur Puri, the original director of the film? There were creative differences between Mayur and mom, hence we decided to part ways. The film was delayed by a month or two, otherwise it was a smooth transition. Certain parts were re-shot but then our team was very supportive. Mom’s done a fabulous job. Guess all is well that ends well.
How would you describe your mom as a director? Oh, she’s a hardcore professional! No mama- baby happening on the sets. Otherwise she’s open to my suggestions. But having been an actress she knows how to take good shots of the heroines. Also her vision and shot break- down is pre-planned, and is all beautifully sketched on paper.
Besides your dad, the film also has Rishi Kapoor and Vinod Khanna. I am lucky to have got a chance to work with both. Rishi uncle is so young at heart and full of masti. He is vociferous and would yell at me ‘what nonsense’ if he didn’t like a shot. Vinod uncle, on the other hand, would make suggestions softly and gently. Both thought of the film as their own home production and took genuine interest. Dad, Rishi uncle and Vinod uncle have a couple of scenes together in the film. You should watch out for those. Did you watch Yamla Pagla Deewana? Of course! I loved it. I liked the way dad promoted the film. I have never seen him promoting any other film the way he did YPD.
What’s happening with your other films, Garam Chai and Exchange Offer? Both the films are almost complete. There were some financial problems, but now I really don’t know what is happening with them. What else are you up to? In these two years, I have matured a lot and am now open to a lot of new things. I am a hands- on producer for my sister Ahana’s film and am looking at more scripts for my production house. But my first love is still acting. What about television? I may turn a producer on television with mom, or perform as a dancer, but I can’t see myself anchoring a show!
Esha Deol has certainly not given up the hope to have her a big family reunion on screen. She has been dreaming of acting in a film which stars Dharmendra, Sunny, Bobby, Hema and her sister.
Esha who has just turned producer, says, "It would be fab to work with the entire family. I'm certainly keeping this option open in my production house's to-do list." Esha, who has shot with her dad for the first time for Tell me Oh Khuda, has been bowled over by her pa's ease in front of the camera, "He is an effortless actor and I got to learn so much from him.
I couldn't believe that I was acting with my father – something I always wanted to do. It is the best moment of my acting career." This is where you say "Awwww."

Actor Dharmendra’s known to be quite an authoritative figure when it comes to being a dad to sons actors Sunny and Bobby Deol, but when it comes to daughters Esha and Ahana, he’s purely a doting father. “You have to be stricter with sons to discipline them, but daughters are more special,” says the veteran star. “Yes, papa’s more of a friend to us. I can discuss just about anything with him,” chips in Esha. “You know that someday they will get married and go to their husband’s house. So you want to hold on to them even more dearly,” says Dharmendra rather emotionally.
Tomorrow being Father’s Day, though both Esha and Dharmendra insist that all days spent together are special to them and not just Father’s Day, they admit that they do look forward to celebrating it. In fact, Esha even recalls picking up cuddly teddy bears and cards for her dad. But this time around it’s Dharmendra who’s a dad on a mission as he reveals, “We are looking for a boy for Esha!”
Yes, talks of Esha’s marriage have already begun in the Deol household, even as Esha says that there’s still time. “Arranged marriages are not for me. I need to fall in love, but yes parents’ approval matters the most,” she says. “Looking for the perfect boy for your daughter is never easy.” And Esha is quick to add that it’s going to be tougher since ‘Papa’s set such a high benchmark already.’ “Every girl looks out for her father’s qualities in her husband as well. It’ll be hard to find anyone matching up to him.”
But Dharmendra reveals that as a father he does have one regret — that he did not encourage Esha to take up football. “Esha was always so good at it, I wish I had allowed her to play on a national level. I didn’t because I was over-protective. Today I do feel the pinch.” But Esha brushes it off. “Dad did what was best for us. All I know is that as a dad he has given us the best memories a daughter can ever have and that’s what I will cherish for life,” she smiles.

Вы думаете, что парни бояться вашего отца и братьев? Так и есть. Но это работает на меня, в большинстве случаев. Мой папа и братья - всегда рядом, но я свободно могу общаться с парнями.

-К кому вы ближе- к Санни или к Бобби. Иша- Мы близки к обоим. Но с Санни мы бываем чаще, потому что, когда мы едем за границу, в Лондон-я, моя мама, мои друзья - мы там проводим с ним длительное время. Брат Бобби также приезжает иногда, но нам удается проводить больше времени с братом Санни.
-Я никогда не встречала их. Хема- Очень хорошие ребята.
-Насколько они различны? Хема- Санни больше похож на отца, точно, как отец- Дхарам-джи: его лицо, поведение, манера разговаривать. Да? Я могу много наблюдать Дхарама и Санни. Очень хороший парень.
-А как Бобби? Он весёлый… Хема- Да, он моложе, вот почему они очень отличаются.
-Кто преподнёс самый приятный подарок? Иша- Брат Санни. Он подарил мне забавную обувь, на подобии кедов Nike, потому что я люблю играть, и всякий раз я иду и прошу его, что я очень хочу пару молодёжных кедов Nike , и у меня их много лежит в шкафу, подаренных им.

Эша Деол о Дхармендре: У меня его телосложение
Он (Дхармендра) мотивирует не только меня, но и всю нашу нацию. Он первый настоящий мужчина в нашей индустрии, и все его роли были основаны на атлетизме. Благодаря ему у меня атлетическое телосложение и определенные стрижки, которые редко бывают у женщин. На самом деле, мое телосложение в точности как у него. Когда я играла в футбол на поле, мои тренеры обращались ко мне по имени моего отца. Я с раннего возраста занималась фитнесом, потому что на меня повлияли он и моя мама.
Он всегда гордился тем, что я занимаюсь спортом. Когда я была ребенком, я просыпалась в 5 утра и тренировалась на пляже в футбол или гандбол. Я следовала его советам по поводу физических упражнений и правильного питания. Наблюдение за тем, как он играет в бадминтон, также оказало на меня влияние. Фитнес является частью нашей беседы и сегодня.
Мой папа так вдохновляет! Даже сегодня он просыпается в 5 утра, чтобы позаниматься дыхательными упражнениями, йогой и медитацией. Он любит кататься на велосипеде и часто ходит пешком.
