What can I do with a face that God has given

She had a new hairdo, worked out to shed that flab and slipped into a sexy attire. Yes, Dhoom had reinvented Esha. So what's next? Is the Deol darling heading for another change! She says it all.

Why is a pretty girl like you playing a ghost?
(Laughing aloud) I am playing a pretty ghost and it was fun doing that role. What excited me was the fact that I could do and see things that no one could see or do.
I play a secretary to Fardeen, who is a married man. We have an affair and I become pregnant but due to a mishap, I die. However, since I am a discontented soul with an 'unfinished business' I return to haunt him.

Wasn't it intimidating to portray the part of a ghoul?
See if you are nice towards the ghost, the ghost will also be good to you. (giggling) As for playing the character, it was not scary but it was very taxing.
I would be drained emotionally and physically after doing a scene because it is not as easy as enacting a normal character. Yet I had a blast just doing something that I have never ever done otherwise. I only hope it is liked by both angels and ghosts. (laughing)

Does that mean you are open to experimenting with characters?
I would love to do various kinds of roles. I love the way Darling was scripted and has been edited by Ram Gopal Varma. It is a fast-moving film and Ramu insisted that I have a plain but gorgeous look.

This is the first time you have worked with RGV, who is known for bringing out the best from his cast. What was your experience?
I always wanted to work with Ramu and while doing Darling, I realised how good he is at his work. Actually I don't have to even say it as his films speak for themselves but I understood that he is there to capture you in your elements, when you are in a character and he is so excellent that inevitably you become good in his company. He is honest, blunt and a pleasant person to get along with as well. When he approached me with this subject, I grabbed the opportunity with both hands.

Darling is your fifth film with Fardeen...
He has improved a lot as far as his acting is concerned. What has really kept fluctuating over the years is his weight. (Chuckling) But in Darling, he is back to looking hot and happening.

You have known each other since your childhood. What kind of relationship do you share now that you are working partners?
Fardeen and I have always been great friends and whenever we are together, we have a blast. We are known for our one-liners on the sets and by the time we were doing Just Married, our fourth film together, we had spoken and fought about everything under the sun so that there was nothing to talk about any more. We were so bored of each other that we stopped acknowledging each other. But again on the sets of Darling, we were back to our usual selves, bickering and teasing one another. Fardeen is a very helpful guy.

In Ankahee, you played Kavya, a negative character obsessed with a married man. Were you comfortable doing that role?
I loved my work in the film as it was a very different character and I got to do something very diverse. I was appreciated for it. For my good work, I always give credit to my directors, who mould me. I have enjoyed doing most of my films like No Entry, Yuva, Dhoom, Kaal. But there are also some films wherein I have hated myself.

Which are they?
Cash, for one.
Everything. Honestly. When it was narrated to all of us, it sounded like a very interesting subject. The shooting also went off well and we even worked hard. I guess things went wrong on the editing table. There was no growth of any of the characters and none of us was happy with the ultimate result. Moreover the controversy that occurred during the time of the release hyped it even further. But it was a dud. I hated that film.

Till date, you have mostly featured in multi-starrers. Aren't you apprehensive about getting lost in the ensemble?
By the time I came into the scene, mostly multi-starrers were being made so I had no choice. Moreover it is fun to be a part of a big team and also you are not entirely blamed for the failure. (Chortling) Now the Kunal Shivdasani-directed Shiney Ahuja starrer Hijack and Mahesh Bhatt's Jannat have only me in the female lead.

What are the other films in your kitty?
I have One Two Three, a multi-starrer with a very hilarious script and Golmaal Returns, another comedy.

What prompted you to do an 'item' number in Kumar Mangat's Sunday?
What I have done is a classy number shot very well and with no jhatkas matkas. For the dancer in me, it was quite a satisfying experience. Dhoom machale dhoom from Dhoom was highly appreciated so much so that it has become the national anthem of the industry but tell me, for how long can I keep doing it? This was the reason I refused Beedi jalaile... from Omkara. Not many know that it was first offered to me but I was apprehensive about playing a prostitute. And, today the film and especially the song is a blast all over.

For Dhoom, you reinvented yourself. Are you planning to experiment with your looks for any of your forthcoming films?
What can I do with a face that God has given me? All I can change is my hairstyle but excess use of hair-dryer is ruining my hair and I think two years from now I shall become completely bald (chuckling). I am working out and my dance is keeping me fit. Other than that I don't believe in other ways of changing myself.

Lately you are seen in advertisements also.
It took me a long time to get into endorsements as I felt I should fit into the brand. I would not like to sell something that I won't use myself. I am happy with my Kent RO and Garnier ads.

In your seven years in the industry and 20 films to your credit how do you feel when you look back today?
Frankly speaking, my journey so far has been bumpy. I was a kaccha nimbu, when I came but people forgave me for my mistakes and accepted me open-heartedly. Now I am taking extra efforts to do better. I am selective and am choosing only good subjects. When I started I was really young, but now I know the tricks of the trade. Yet I take up every new film with the enthusiasm of a newcomer.

How does your mother feel about your work?
My mom is happy for me. She is always there to help me but now I make my own decisions and she respects that.

Have you seen Apne? What did you think of your father?
I was oblivious to everything except my father in the film. I saw only him. I love my dad and miss him a lot. It was after a long time that he was back on the big screen and it meant a lot to him. You can see the effort he has put into the film and it has worked in his favour. (Tears well up her eyes) You see, just mentioning him makes me emotional and he is the only man who can make me cry.

Esha Deol would love to marry Vivek Oberoi

Posted: Sept 18th 2006 by Aryan Mishra

Esha has a crush on Vivek Oberoi and this Deol girl has no qualms with admitting it. The duo has worked together in movies in the past-‘Yuva’, ‘Kaal’ and ‘Pyare Mohan’, but they have never been paired opposite each other.

Recently, in one of her interview Esha admitted that her parents were looking around for her perfect bridegroom, but if she was given a choice she would like to settle down with Vivek Oberoi as he is a completely down to earth and a very religious individual.

According to Esha, these qualities are very rare in guys and Vivek fits the bill of being her Mr. Right.

Esha and Vivek workout at the same gym ‘Barbarian’ in the Mumbai suburbs and their instructor Satya is rumoured to be trying to play a cupid. Looks like Vivek is in sudden demand; first Sushma and now Esha, looks like many ‘Pyaris’ are behind this Mohan.

Dancing is my first love: Esha

Esha Deol is all set to hone her dancing skills. She is flying to the United States to enroll at a dance academy in February. And wow, Esha is going solo too! Most often accompanied by her mother, this time she’s set to live alone for two months. She can barely believe it herself.

Says Esha, “Even Aahna is not coming with me. I am going all alone. Yes, two months is a long time to be away from the family. It took me some time to take this decision, but I think it is necessary. I have two months free now. I have completed my work for Sunday and Hijack, so I thought I should utilize the time and do something worthwhile.”

Talking about her upcoming trip, Esha says, “I just can’t wait to go to the US. Dancing is my first love. After all, how long can one go on with those same old jhatkas and matkas in films? I want to learn some new dance forms, like jazz and ballet, at the dance academy (name withheld by request) and use them in my films later.”

Esha also tells us that her mother is working on a new ballet Ganga. “Mummy has performed 12 ballets. This will be her 13th one. She is doing a lot of research and appointing choreographers and musicians.”

Esha, Hema and Aahna will return to their bungalow at Juhu around June-July, after she returns (right now they’re living in Gurgaon). “The work is in progress there. Four floors are ready. We may add two more... We will keep the entire building to ourselves,” she says.

As a kid, Esha learnt Bharat Natyam and went for dance concerts with mom.

ESHA DEOL

BABY D

Esha D walked into Bollywood scene in 2002. She had a formindable list of successes in the family. Dad Dharmendra is a legend, so is her beautiful mother, Hema. Her step-brothers Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol have seen a lot of success in films. However, bollywood is a funny place. You may have the best connections, the best films lined up, but unless the public accepts you by making your movies a success, you are nowhere. Several star children have fallen by the wayside, and unconnected newcomers have risen to great heights.

Baby D - Esha, looks good, acts well and is able to bag prestigious films, all she needs is a string of successes and critical acclaim to be able to call herself established.

ASK MY HEART

Her debut was good. She had Koi Mere Dil Se Pooche which was loosely based on Sleeping with the Enemy, but the box office refused to sleep with this film. She starred with Aftab Shivdasani who was riding the tidal wave thanks to Mast.

Her next was a romantic movie with Hritik the hearthrob, Na Tum Jano Na Hum. It was a dream project but Hritik was on a downslide and the movie flopped.

Kya Dil Ne Kahaa co-starred Esha with Tusshar. Tusshar was smiling post the success of Mujhe Kuch Kehna hai. This movie had the hit number Nikamma Kiya Is Dil ne, and it had a good look too. Set in Australia, it was to appeal to the NRI crowd too. But it did not do good business.

SOMETHING'S UP

Kucch To Hai was a mystery thriller in the mold of I know what you did last summer. It was about a bunch of schoolkids out to solve a mystery. Esha costarred again with Tusshar and the Ekta it-girl, Natasha. The movie had several good songs that were all over the music charts. Tere ishq ki dewaangi sar pe chadh ke bole was a big hit. The movie enjoyed moderate success.

Up next was the Zayed Khan debut film Chura Liya Hai Tumne. Again, a mystery flick. The action was set in Bangkok and had some good songs. Mohabbat hai mirchi featured Zayed and Rakhi, but Boys are best had Zayed with Esha. Alas, the movie did not do well.

LOVE AND WAR

LOC Kargil was the JP Dutta opus on the Kargil war. But to increase the poignancy factor there were profiles of the dear ones of the soldiers who have to suffer heartbreak when their men are killed in war. Esha played the girlfriend of Vikram Batra, one of the martyrs of the war.

Mani Ratnam has a magic wand that makes all his actors perform better in his movies than they do elsewhere. In Yuva, Esha had the bold role of a young teacher who is willing to flout norms of society and live with the man she adores. In a spunky gesture she picks up her baggage and moves in with Ajay Devgan. The wonderful Adnan Sami/Alka Yagnik number Badal jo aaye was picturised on Esha just when she has been proposed to by Ajay Devgan. She put in a good performance.

A STRING OF SUCCESSES

Dhoom was a bollywood movie with a difference. It was slick, fast, short and almost hollywoodian. Esha had a complete makeover here. So far she had played a teenager in romantic movie, the kinda girl you can take home to your mother. Here she lost weight, toned her body, put on a bronze makeup, wore skimpy clothes and plyed the hottie of the movie. The title megahit song, Dhoom was picturised on her, and she played the love interest of Uday Chopra. She even had the 'venus rising out of the waves' scene where she walks out of the ocean in a swimsuit - alas - a one peice. Dhoom was the first major success that Esha tasted.

Insaan, the insane movie containing many many stars, Esha played the girlfriend of Akshay Kumar, who played a muslim autorickshaw driver. Their story was the best of the lot.

Kaal was a prestigious project, a Karan Johar film and supposedly a jungle horror. Esha played John Abraham's girlfriend and scared the wild animals by wearing skimpy clothes. The movie was moderately successful.

Main Aisa Hi Hoon featured Esha as the spaced out wife of Ajay Devgan. The movie was a take off on Sam I am. Not a huge success though Esha's good performance was noted.

Dus again had Esha as an undercover criminal. She wore grim faces and hot clothes. She falls for Abhishek and helps him out at the end of the movie. The movie was a success, being a fast-paced action flick.

PART OF THE BIG PICTURE

In No Entry our little girl played the pious wife of Salman Khan who is a compulsive flirt. The movie was one of biggest hits of 2005 and being a part of that helped.

Shaadi No 1 was similar in story to No Entry, all about straying husbands and wives who seek to outwit them. However this multistarring movie did not work.

Pyaare Mohan was a fun movie with lots of comedy and silly sequences. Esha was paired with Fardeen Khan. The movie did not do well but was well appreciated.

Ankahee was the Vikram Bhatt movie about (allegedly) his own affair with Sushmita Sen. Esha plays a tempramental beauty queen who becomes obsessed with her married lover. The movie flopped though Esha's performance was acclaimed.

CURRENT YEAR - 2007

This year started out with Just Married with Fardeen. It met with the same fate as the Titanic, not the movie, the ship!

Cash was slated as the next Dus. But the plot went haywire, the movie confused and confounded the viewers. The majority stayed away from the cinema halls.

Darling was the RGV release with Fardeen again. But failed to endear anyone.

FUTURE TENSE

Although Esha is seen as a good-looker who performs creditably, she hasnt tasted awesome success. She is still young in the filmdom and may be able to get a project that proves her worth soon.

Golmaal Returns is the remake of the hilarious and madcap Golmaal. Esha has bagged the project, and if the II is any good as I it may just shake the boxoffice tree.

GOSSSSSIP

The Deols are known to be very protective of their womenfolk. It is said that Esha is too scared to strip or kiss in films because she fears her father. All the raunchier dances in her films (Mohabbat hai Mirchi, Ding Dong) have been performed by others (Rakhi Sawant, Natasha).

Her mother is still very successful even when she appears in mother roles, and is still seen as more beautiful than her daughters.

So far, no gossip about Esha has leaked out. Either she is a very good girl, or she is very good at hiding facts.

"I think ghosts are normal entities" - Esha Deol

By Subhash K. Jha, September 6, 2007 - 10:56 IST

Esha Deol loved playing a bhoot in Ram Gopal Varma's Darling. "I think ghosts are normal entities. Ramu made it a point not to make the ghost in-your-face spooky. But it did get scary especially in our new house in Goregaon. When mom wasn't around I'd look anxiously under the bed to spot spooks. Fortunately, doing Darling was fun. You can't call it a horror film. My character goes through so many changes. Ramu edits the film in his head before he starts. He knows exactly what he wants. Like Mani Ratnam."

Ramu and Esha hit it off very well. "He's not one of those directors who don’t know which direction to go into. And then you end up stuck…and stupid."

She's of course hinting at the disaster that was Anubhav Sinha's Cash. Esha sighs, "On the script level it sounded so good. It's so sad that when one isn't able to execute such a zany idea. When I saw the film I couldn't understand it. All of us in the cast were quite put off by the outcome. …Look, just because I was in the film I can’t go ooh and aah. One can't fool the audience. I think you should ask Anubhav Sinha what went wrong. When we were shooting everything was fine. He took a lot of care with certain sequences. At the end of it there was nothing. I still don't know what happened to the diamond at the end."

On a brighter note she got along famously with her co-star Shamita Shetty. "She's a very nice girl. All South Indians are nice girls," she jokes impishly. "Shamita and I were together away from home in Cape Town for a long time. She was cool. We gymed together. She has the best abs right now. Mine? I'm bored with mine. Of course I'll continue with my fitness level. But it isn't obsession. It's a habit. If I don't work-out I don’t feel right. "

Esha's sister Ahana doesn't work out. "But she dances, and like my mom that keeps her really fit. Ahana is a laid- back girl. She's still to make up her mind about what to do." Esha continues, "I loved playing Geeta in Darling. I appreciate the fact that he considered me for a role like this….It's an eccentric part, yes. I enjoy playing traumatized parts. That gives me a high."

She’s done a series of not-so-great films with her Darling co-star Fardeen Khan. "We work well together. We share a great rapport. I've known Fardeen for a very long time. He’s a good friend…Though people think I'm too aloof to be friendly."

Esha's next release is a midair thriller called Hijack with Shiny Ahuja. "He plays my knight in shining armour. It's an action thriller directed by Kunal Shivdasani. People said I should do something realistic. So here I am. I'm also doing a film called Jannat with Mahesh Bhatt. "

Talk veers to Ram Gopal Varma's Aag released just a week earlier. Did she regret not playing Basanti? "Are you mad? There can't be another Sholay. And there can't another Basanti…after my mom."

I want to do women-centric roles now: Esha

3 Jul 2008

Esha Deol's care a damn attitude is passe. Today, the lady has matured and confesses that she was a real brat when she stepped into Bollywood at the age of 18.

Since then, Esha has been through different phases in her profession. This girl with washboard abs had taken a short break from films, but now is back to work. Soon she will be seen playing an air hostess in Kunal Shivdasani's action flick Hijack. She tells NT her reasons for going slow on the career front and the roles she would like to essay, even as she goes gaga over her gorgeous mom.

Deliberate decision

Giving reasons for her hiatus from work, she says, "It was a conscious decision. I wasn't getting any interesting offers and I didn't want to thrust myself on my fans by doing insignificant films. So, I made a trip to Chicago and London to brush up my skills in ballet dancing. I also loafed around the streets there - something I cannot do on the roads of Mumbai. I also experimented with different dietary regimes (of course not to lose any more weight) and read a lot of good scripts. When I was not doing any of these things, I was kick boxing."

Glam mom, possessive dad

Talking about the industry's dream girl and her mother Hema Malini, Esha says, "Mom comes across as a person who is very strict, but she is the coolest mom. As a teenager, I was quite bindaas. I would be out dancing and partying till the wee hours. Mom would just keep a watch on my activities, but she never nagged or questioned me. She actually pesters us to go out and discover new restaurants, encourages us to try out new shades of lipstick and even discusses guys with us."

And how does she feel having such a glamourous mom? "When we are together at any of the parties, she is the one who gets the maximum number of compliments. It really makes me happy," says Esha. And what about her dad? "He's a very protective and caring father, and keeps calling me during the shoots to discuss what I am doing. I think I am blessed," she says.

Pals in industry

In an industry where people wouldn't leave a chance to pull the rug from under your feet, who does she consider to be her real friends? "It is really difficult to find friends here. But, I have been lucky to have friends like Fardeen Khan, Zayed Khan, Uday Chopra and Tusshar Kapoor. But, when it comes to discussing the girlie stuff, I do it with my old-time friends Chilarna, Natasha and Payal," says she.

Prince charming

Hema Malini has said it in quite a few interviews that she's looking for a suitable match for her daughter. Ask Esha about this and she says, "Main ladka nahin dhoond rahi hoon, isliye woh hi dhoond rahi hain. I haven't come across anyone interesting as yet." Ask her about her dream man and she says, "My man should make my heart go pitter-patter and there should be strong chemistry between us."

Dream role

The actress has played a sexy siren in Dhoom, a distressed damsel in Ankahee and a revengeful ghost in Darling. Now Esha's ready to experiment with different genres. "I want to do women-centric roles now. I would love to work in films like Khuda Kay Liye, Taare Zameen Par and Aamir."

In the same breath she adds, “It doesn’t mean that I am through with commercial cinema. I have grown up watching Govinda's films, and now I will soon be working with him as his leading lady. In fact, I must share a little secret with you. As an eight-year-old girl, I had written a fan mail to him."

Можно считать, что Иша подастся в альтернатив? Ну или по крайней мере как один из вариантов? Было бы классно.. У нее получится.

Shiney Ahuja, Esha Deol, Kaveri Jha and Mona Ambegaonkar

HIJACK is an action thriller with lots of drama and so it certainly provides ample scope to its new music directors Justin-Uday and the lyricist Kumaar to enchant us music lovers with some racy, thrilling music. The musical success of most Abbas Mustan and Sanjay Gupta films (irrespective of box-office success) is a testimony to the above stated fact. The EROS Entertainment presentation HIJACK has Shiney Ahuja playing the main lead and one must add here that the actor has been associated with some chartbusters and quality music in the past. Be, it HAZARON KHWAISHEN AISI, GANGSTER, WOH LAMHE or BHOOL BHULAIYYA, songs featuring Shiney have clicked in a big way. So, let us see if the trend continues and also checkout what the new team has in store for us.

Single string guitar strums and Abhijeet style singing by Kay Kay (in the beginning) commences 'Aksar', which features as many as four times in the album. The start gives the impression of a mushy love ballad but it later changes gears and converts into a breezy romantic track. And needless to add that it is in the same corridor (not copied though) as Shiney's hit track 'Kya Mujhe Pyar Hai' from WOH LAMHE. The new composers certainly know their music and it shows through the superb orgasmic guitar strumming which can be likened to the legendary Dire Straits. It relies heavily on guitar and when it hits the high string shriller notes, it is a treat.

The 'unplugged' version is another delightful acoustic outing with the arrangements being light and more reverberating. Shaan is exemplary in a track which is once again guitar dominated (in the background) along with some plates and bead sounds.

Racy rhythm, lots of guitar strumming in the background and membranic thumps (via electronic percussions) add zest to the 'remixed' version which is suitable for clubs and discos.

Shaan gives his own distinctive touches to the 'sad' version aided by some slow drawl violin. The following guitar piece (which is simply superlative) and Shaan's 'full of feelings singing' with subtle nuances and voice modulation takes the song to a new high. His distinctive trademark croonings standout and the best part of the 'sad' version is that the racy and breezy original has been slowed just appropriately to make it a delightful hearing experience.

Next up is 'Dekh Dekh', a deadly and rhythmic dance track which has the queen of item number Sunidhi Chauhan holding center stage along with Suraj Jagan and Joi. The song will definitely be patronized by the GenX if promoted well. Sunidhi is in full form in a song that brings the thrill aspects of the movie to the fore. The song in part reminds us of (may be unintentionally) Mithun Chakraborthy's 'Yeh Raat Mein Jo Nasha Hai' (KASAM PAIDA KARNEWAALE KI) and also incorporates Pritam's style! The heavy use of western music addendums like drums, plates, synthesizers lend the desired thriller touch and makes the listener (as the lyrics say) 'Move your body'. The only minus point is that the tune is a much heard before one and so are the lyrics.

‘Hijack’ is an action thriller revolving around a plane hijacking and an airport officer who lays his life on the line to save the hostages from hijackers.

The movie stars Shiney Ahuja and Esha Deol in lead roles.

Hijack is about Vikram Madan (Shiney Ahuja) who is a ground maintenance officer at the Chandigarh airport.

His social life is limited to one friend, Rajeev, who is the Security Chief of the same airport. As luck would have it, Vikram’s daughter is traveling with her teacher to a debate contest to Amritsar from Delhi. But a group of terrorists working for a man named Rasheed (KK Raina) hijack that flight. Rasheed is languishing in Indian jails and the terrorists seek his release as ransom.

The flight is forced to land in Chandigarh. The terrorists threaten to kill the passengers if Rasheed isn’t released by the Indian government. The mastermind of this group of hijackers is a man named Abdullah who remains a mystery till the end.

Now, Vikram is faced with the dilemma of being the only man who can sneak inside the aircraft to save his daughter Priya and other hostages. Once he sneaks into the aircraft with the help of the airhostess, Saira (Esha Deol), he starts plotting and planning and killing the terrorists one by one. Some innocent passengers too become victims of the gunshots by ruthless terrorists. But somehow, Vikram and Saira manage to save the day.

Presented by Eros Entertainment, ‘Hijack’ is debut feature by Kunal Shivdasani, who has written the story and screenplay and also edited the film.

The movie is produced by Kunal Shivdasani and Dinesh Vijan of Aleya Motion Magic Pvt Ltd.

The bubbly looking Esha Deol has always been in the forefront in promoting her films. Be it a promotional dance number or addressing to the media she always took keen interest in endorsing her films.

But this time the pretty lass is maintaining a relatively low profile for her upcoming release HIJACK starring Shiney Ahuja alongside. Can one believe that the girl who left no stones unturned in promoting her flicks like DHOOM, KAAL, CASH, recent one being ONE TWO THREE is now keeping a silence for HIJACK.

Seems like this time Esha has preferred to sit back quiet instead of getting into hype & hoopla and let the movie take-off.

Esha Deol and Shiney Ahuja, co-stars in the upcoming film 'Hijack,' attended an event in Fardiabad to promote their film and launch Cinemax's 21st property in the country on Thursday, August 21, 2008.

August 22, 2008 (Sawf News) - Esha Deol and Shiney Ahuja, co-stars in the upcoming film Hijack, attended an event in Fardiabad to promote their film and launch Cinemax's 21st property in the country on Thursday, August 21, 2008.

Hijack is a separatist hijack drama based on the real life hijacking of an Indian Airlines plane in 1999.

Shiney Ahuja plays Vikram Madan, a ground maintenance officer at Chandigarh airport whose daughter is on board the Amritsar - New Delhi flight that is hijacked by six terrorists seeking the release of Maqsood, a dreaded terrorist in the custody of the Indian police.

Vikram sneaks into the flight when it is forced to land at Chandigarh with the help of Saira (Esha Deol), an airhostess and single handedly leads a rescue attempt.

Shiney Ahuja is reported to have done all his stunts himself.

Kunal Shivdasani directed and produced Hijack opens in theaters on August 29.

Chak De girl steps in Esha's shoes

Among the whole bunch of girls who acted in Chak De India alongside SRK, probably the one who managed to draw maximum eyeballs was Sagarika Ghatge. Sagarika, who played the gutsy character of Preeti Sabarwal, also emerged as the highest goal-scorer in the film.
Now it seems Sagarika has managed to strike a goal in her real life too. The actress has been signed by Percept Picture Company for their film Raftaar (working title). The film is directed by noted ad film maker Shamin Desai. Sagarika will be paired opposite serial-kisser Emraan Hashmi in the film. What is interesting is the fact that the role which Sagarika has been signed for was to be originally played by Esha Deol.

When we got in touch with Sarita Patil, Head of feature films at Percept Picture Company, to get some more info on this story. “Yes we have signed Sagarika for Raftaar. She has replaced Esha Deol as we couldn’t agree on the price. After things didn’t work out with Esha, we had a couple of options in mind and our director Shamin had seen Sagarika’s work in Chak De India and felt she would fit the part. Sagarika’s is a full-fledged lead role opposite Emraan Hashmi.”

The film also stars Neha Dhupia and Aditya Panscholi in prominent roles. Shooting for the film is currently underway in Kuala Lumpur and the film is expected to release sometime early next year (2009)

Guitar girl
By: Upala KBRDate: 2008-09-03
Mumbai:
Esha Deol believes in working an extra bit harder for her roles. After learning kick-boxing for Cash, she's learning to play the guitar for Shivam Nair's next, Exchange Offer opposite Rahul Bose.

Esha says, "Learning to play the guitar is the toughest thing on earth. It's easier to prepare for an action film. I have been learning to play the instrument from Raju, an acclaimed guitarist, who was scouted out by the producers, PVR. I've never played a guitar in my life - even in my college days. It's very difficult. I squint half the time trying to look at the strings; apart from the fact that my fingers hurt."
In the family

Esha says she initially thought of faking the guitar-playing scenes on screen but director Shivam advised her against it. "I also thought why not learn it like I have learnt to dance to jazz? I can't sit idle for long. It can always come in handy some time and I have a fine ear for sur and taal. I have been practicing every day for an hour. The first tune that I mastered in the first couple of days was the Ek Haseena Thi tune from Subhash Ghai's Karz. I also want to learn how to play Dilbar Mere from Satte Pe Satta. It's my mom's song and my favourite."

50 saal baad

But Esha says it will take a long time to master that tune. "The way I am going, I will learn to play the tune when I am 50!" Esha laughs and adds, "But I must say both mom and my sister Ahana have been very encouraging. Mom learnt to play the sitar while Ahana's been learning the guitar for a long time."

Esha's next release is Kunal Shivdasani's Hijack which releases this week where she's paired with Shiney Ahuja. Esha says, "I am not paired romantically opposite him. We do share certain chemistry in our scenes. I play a gutsy airhostess but when the plane gets hijacked, I stay cool and calm. My passengers' safety comes first. We had great fun shooting for the film in Mauritius."

‘It would be fun not to have male actors’Sujata Chakrabarti

Actor Esha Deol says she’s bored of typical Bollywood masala films and is ready for some cutting-age cinema.

Quite contrary to the oomph image she exudes on screen, Esha Deol can quite baffle you with her persona when you first meet her. “At home, they know I have a split personality. There is this side of me that is flamboyant when I meet people and interact; I am loud, bold and bratty. But at home, I am spiritual and disciplined. Maintaining multi-images comes very naturally to me.”

Compliment Esha on her toned and envious figure and she won’t give you the standard Bollywood one-liners about good metabolism and fantastic genes. Instead she says, “It is very difficult to maintain this figure. You are so enthusiastic when you set yourself a target, but when you achieve it, maintaining it becomes a monotonous routine.”

And all thanks to her athletic image, she seems to be the director’s choice when it comes to casting actors for action films. However, Esha admits that she is quite bored of regular Bollywood masala movies and wants to don a different garb altogether. She says, “I have made huge mistakes in selecting films earlier. You know how newcomers in the industry are? All starry eyed! Along the years, Indian cinema is changing and I too want to broaden my horizon.”

Esha wants to step into new and experimental cinema, preferably those that have women-centric scripts. She is also looking forward to mom Hema’s revival of their home production that will see beti in several new avatars on the screen. She says, “As an actor, of course I will be understood better. After all, your family understands you best. We surveyed the situation and realised that producers in the industry today are quite prosperous. I belong to a very creative family. It is time now to cash in on that fact.”

Speculations are rife that an earlier Hema Malini project that was to shoot Esha and veteran actress Rekha together did not see the light of the day as most male actors approached for the film backed out, feeling there was little for them in a project dominated by two women. Ask Esha if that’s true, and she laughs. “It is not necessary that every project will work out as planned. Having said that, it would be fun not to have male actors around. Hopefully, that day will come when I am still around in the industry.”

Her most recent release, Kunal Shivdasani’s Hijack, sees Esha playing the role of an air hostess caught in a mid-air crisis. So does this role satisfy Esha’s creative potential? She says, “There was nothing much to be done apart from acting like a level-headed and composed woman through out the panic situation. After all, you can’t change much about that profession.”

I prefer a Live-In relationship: Esha Deol

September 11th, 2008

ESHA DEOL tells JYOTHI VENKATESH that when she flaunted her bikini, it worked in her favor in Dhoom

Q.You have never been media savvy like your mother Hema Malini!

A.I have always maintained a very low profile as an actor because basically I am a bit of an introvert and hence prefer not to be accessible to the media though it should not be misconstrued as me being not media-savvy.

Q.How tough was it to play an air hostess in your recent release Hijack?

A.It is for the first time that I played the role of an air hostess in a film. I feel that being an air hostess is as good as being Miss India, because of the kind of grooming and training that they have to undergo. You have to be elegant and cannot afford to lose your temper on an annoying passenger.

Q.Did you do any home work to get into the skin of your character?

A.My director Kunal Shivdasani was my reference point for me, as far as inputs were concerned. Besides Kunal, I used to make it a point to stare at the air hostesses whenever I was flying, to the point of even making them get amused and even wonder what I was up to, because I do not have a friend who is an air hostess who could have briefed me.

Q.In what way do you think your character is unusual in Hijack?

A.There is absolutely no romantic track between Shiny Ahuja and me. It is indeed very refreshing change from the stereo typed commercial Hindi cinema that I do not fall in love with Shiny and he also does not even dream about me. I would say that the story is the real hero of the film, not Shiny or me. I did not play an under cover Ninja air hostess who gets into kicks and karate stuff and hence there was no need for me to do any action in then film.

Q.Name at least five films which according to you are the best in your repertoire?

A.I have always liked doing intense roles like in Darling and Ankahee. Yuva, Ankahee, Darling and Dhoom are what I’d say the four best films in my career.

Q.Why are you still single and as yet unattached?

A.I suppose every daughter looks for a bit of her dad in every man that she comes across. That greed is there still in me. Unfortunately I think they do not make men like my dad any more. As far as my Mr Right is concerned, instead of opting for an arranged marriage, I would not mind living with a guy for two years and marrying him after I know him for what he is.

Q.Will you be able to convince your parents about living in with your boy friend?

A.My mother is quite practical and she would not mind, though I cannot say the same thing about my dad too.

Q.Tell us about your growth as an actor over the years!

A.Frankly I feel I was very oblivious to a lot of things about me earlier and I have learnt by trail and error method as an actor. I think I have matured quite a lot now and am more spontaneous now. At one time the industry used to call me a brat. I had started at the age of 18 and was enjoying parties. Now when I sit back and think, I feel I should have waited because I was like a kacchha limbu in the beginning because my back ground was protected but now I have become mature and wiser.

Q.In what way have you changed?

A.Earlier I used to say yes to every offer but now I have learnt to sift and sort out. In fact I would say that in have changed my perspective towards the kind of work that I do now. I have become more selective. In any case since different layers of films are being made now, after working with a young new director like Kunal Shivdasani, I am now looking forward to working with younger directors like Shriram Raghavan

Q.Did your hot bikini avatar work in your favor in Dhoom?

A.You bet my bikini worked in my favor and it worked. I have always been frank enough to say that if you have it you should flaunt it the right way. In any case, I think that today every other actress is sexy and hot.

Q.What do you think has gone wrong with your career?

A.The choices that I made as far as my career were wrong. I have always gone by my instinct when I choose a role. I expected a lot from cash but what can one do when things go wrong? I wanted a break because I wanted to look at myself in the perspective of an outsider and get a breather. I did a course in Russian ballet and came back to India.

Q.Is there any film of yours on the floors as of now?

A.I am working in PVR Pictures Exchange Offer in which I have been teamed opposite Rahul Bose. It is a light film with Shivam Nair as the director, about a contemporary young couple. Om Puri has also been cast in a very pivotal role in the same film

Q.Have you seen Bobby Deol’s Chamku? Do you voice your criticism against his or Sunny’s performance or comment about their films at any time?

A.How can I? Both Sunny bhaiya and Bobby bhaiya are senior to me. I tell them when I like their films or their performance, but never dare to criticize them at any time.

Q.Are there any plans of reviving your mum’s banner?

A.Yes. Mom is keen on reviving her H.M Creations. Though she had decided to take a break after making Dil Aashna Hai and Mohini, because times were not conducive to filmmaking, now that several corporate companies have jumped into the fray, we are looking at a lot of scripts.
