No strings attached for Abhay Deol
Published: Monday, Feb 14, 2011

Actor Abhay Deol likes to flirt with the unconventional — both on and off the silver screen. He is quite open about his relationship with model-actress Preeti Desai but the actor who had reportedly moved in with her does not endorse the idea of getting married or putting a legal stamp on his relationship.

“I am quite settled in my life. I am in a comfortable space and pretty content with the way my personal life is shaping up. I have always been like this and will continue to be so until I feel the need to get out of my comfort zone and settle down,” he says putting to rest all rumours of an impending engagement to Desai.

The young actor says that he would rather be spoken about for his work than his relationships and is quick to change the conversation to the Deol khandaan’s latest release, Yamla Pagla Deewana.

Even before a question is thrown to him, he says, “I loved the film. It was a complete entertainer and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I would love to do a film with my brothers (Sunny and Bobby Deol) but I cannot have the same chemistry that they share. Even if it is for a film, I cannot imagine myself mouthing kutte, kamine to my uncle (Dharmendra). I am shy and it doesn’t come naturally to me but I am looking forward to working with family,” he insists.

The actor may be open about his views on his relationship, but, as of now, he is tight lipped about the projects he has taken on.
Deol is just back from a long shooting stint in Spain for Zoya Akhtar’s upcoming film Zindagi Naa Milegi Dobara. But the actor is already looking forward to his other films —Dibakar Banerjee’s Shanghai and Roland Joffe’s Singularity which also stars actress Bipasha Basu.

Quiz him about his films and he says it’s too early to talk about both the projects. “Dibakar is a wonderful director and I leap at any opportunity to work with him. Both of us share the same sensibilities and it will be great to work with Emraan Hashmi. I am looking forward to it.”

But he refuses to divulge any details about his Hollywood stint. “It is at too nascent a stage to even talk about the film. Things are being worked out and it’s all very hush-hush,” he says trailing off.

Abhay Deol on cover of The Man

By Bollywood Hungama News Network, March 9, 2011 - 19:29 IST

It's noon at the sprawling Deol estate in Juhu, Mumbai. Pictures of their scion, Dharmendra give you sharp looks from the walls around. Abhay Deol is usually never late, his manager and the family's manager for over 30 years, informs me. Yeah, I know. Our last two meetings, the latter of which was probably one of the wildest shoots I've ever seen in progress, were as clockwork and precise as a Swiss watch. It's also rather strange that the Deol oddball isn't at family lunch in the dining room outside - Abhay rarely misses a family meal despite moving out of the large joint family estate and living on his own. As I converse with an age-ing stuntman and one of Dharmendra's closest aides, Abhay hurries in. He's been busy trying to re-schedule a Krav Maga lesson and other commitments just to make this interview. In a t-shirt and pair of jeans with a bag slung across his shoulder, he's an everyman - someone who doesn't afflict you with whiplash as he passes by despite his tall, lean structure and features uncannily akin to younger version of his uncle, Dharmendra. In short he's the opposite of what a Deol is commonly perceived as. The youngest of the Deol men, he's not a beefy, brawny action star or a love-struck Romeo. He's just another guy - a disarming tactic he's perfected over the years. After courteously greeting his manager and his uncle's friend and a few quick apologies, Abhay guides me into a less daunt-ing living room sans the award figurines and portraits of his family.

As lunch wraps up at the Deol household and his cousin Bobby heads out, Abhay lounges back in a chair and dumps the bag on another. Looking around, this rather opulent setting is quite the opposite of his indie avatar. It's also quite strange that he's moved out of this castle. "I've been living on my own since I was 18. So I've been quite independent for a while now." Having studied in LA and spent a year in New York on his own, the Deols have stopped being overprotective and have let go of their youngest 'brother.' "It would be a waste of their time and energy," Abhay adds. With a hands-on approach to everything, he even did his own apartments in New York and Mumbai - something he kicks himself for- because of the work involved- albeit with a proud smile.

Abhay's current muse is real estate- his flavour of the week. With three architectural plans - a house from scratch, renovating an Old Portuguese property and an Earthship - set to go on the floor later this year, he's a busy man. "I'm planning on building an Earthship - that's biotecture more than architecture. Mike Reynolds is the architect that pioneered this type of architecture, which involves the creative use of eco-friendly and recycled materials to build attractive homes. He's not my architect, though, contrary to all the reports. After finishing my film projects, maybe I'll take a whole year off and complete these projects."

Defining himself as an "explorer", Abhay is constantly seeking the answer to who he really is. "We can't really know who we really are. No one knows for sure." Very similar to his characters except for the fact that life doesn't pan out in 90 minutes with a surprise climax that ends in self discovery. "None of the characters I've played are 100 per cent me. They can't be. I've got my head screwed on to my shoulders. I don't indulge in drugs and alcohol - well, at least not anymore. I'm not arrogant, not a chauvinist and not as ambitious in real life. I don't chase anything." Satyaveer Singh from Manorama Six Feet Under was probably the character closest to who he really is - someone who wants to do something for himself. Self-aware, Abhay knows how the world perceives him - a dope fiend, a rebel, mostly without a cause - "Thanks Dev D!" On the other hand, he knows his biggest advantage - the fact that they see him as a normal guy. "People aren't star struck around me and talk to me like they've known me forever. Yet they respect my work. I'm just a regular guy who happens to be an actor. These people are my biggest fans."

Abhay is swigging what looks like a combo of cold coffee and a protein shake. Oddly close to his family, he refers to his uncle, Dharmendra, as Dad and his father Ajit as Uncle. "I grew up with two sets of parents - my biological ones and my uncle and aunt. My grandmother set the rule that everyone would call my uncle and aunt, dad and mom. My cousins were my brothers and sisters and that just brought the family closer. I think that's why today, I can accept a complete outsider as family because my own family made me take in my uncle and aunt as my real parents. It was a nice thing." A traditionally conservative family, Abhay is probably the first Deol since Dharmendra to be doing his own thing. Money was never a prerogative and fitting in was thrown out of the window. Living on his own, away from the family, allegedly with his lady love Preeti Desai, a super model, from the UK, Abhay is the definition of cosmopolitan. While he is politically correct, he's also ready to occasionally let his guard down unlike most of Bollywood - this while taking five from saving cinema and resurrecting real. For a boy who grew up loving Daryl Hannah and Michelle Pfeifer, he's a bit of a paradox when he says that he isn't interested in ideals. Pensively looking at the garden outside he grins mischievously as he decides on how best to put it, "Flaws are good. Without flaws life would be boring." He'd know best, considering he's far from being any one's ideal man. Honesty is probably the only thing he cherishes more than anything else - a trait I noticed on the shoot as he glanced across the star studded wall at Rakesh Shrestha's studio and made some rather undiplomatic comments about certain stars and their affinity towards plastic surgery. Their sharp stares and half-opened mouths suddenly seemed to have more reason than they ever did.

With the values instilled in him by his family, Abhay set out into the world of acting after two years of theatre in LA. Stardom was overrated - having fun, though, wasn't. Unlike his cousins Sunny and Bobby, Dharmendra, didn't launch his nephew in an action flick. Instead, Abhay entered movies without much fanfare in the understated Imtiaz Ali flick, Socha Na Tha - a decision that would redefine the Deols. Abhay, now, didn't need to fit in. He never championed the cause of the staid and the ones who fitted in, anyhow. With his stereotypical looks it was rather odd that he never got cast in a slew of romantic flicks after his debut. Instead as a super hero husband in Honeymoon Travels to a self-proclaimed author/detective in a sleepy town in Manorama, Abhay was the Bollywood equivalent of Emperor Nero - strumming his fiddle as his movies tanked at the box office one at a time. "I was interested in anything that was non-formula. I had to see where that went because there weren't too many takers. When my first few films didn't do well, there were even fewer takers. Instead of chasing after the production houses that mattered and doing the kind of movies that are supposed to take you places, I did movies that I connected to. Even if I don't make money or become a huge star, I'm happy if I get a steady source of films. I'm not here to fit in. I'm here to have fun. Not fitting in was a great experience. Having failure in the beginning of my career was good."
Like the dark, dry humour he loves, in an eerie way Abhay wasn't watching his career burn as he laughed along. Instead he was watching the beginning of the death of the cliché. "The film industry here is a business. It's insecure and it doesn't guarantee you 9-5 returns. I wanted to start out with small numbers and build a solid fan base that will always stick by me. I didn't want to sell myself just for the sake of it." For Abhay, the creative aspect is the focus. While he hasn't found the perfect formulae to marry that into box office he isn't far off the mark either with sleeper hits like Dev D. "Sometimes I do feel like I am on the forefront or the frontline of change. I'm not the generation that will reap the benefits of this change but it's worth it. Hopefully I'll be recognised as being part of this change."

While his critical acclaim grew with Oye Lucky and later with the cult classic, Road, Movie, Abhay's contemporaries and well-wishers begged him not to shy away from the song and dance. Probably a shout out at his well wishers albeit mockingly so, in his trademark style, Abhay is all set to do an item number in Tera Kya Hoga Johnny. He affirms to his principle that he's here to have fun first.

Despite bagging a role beside Josh Hartnett and Bipasha Basu in Roland Joffe's Singularity, and in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara featuring Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif, both set to release later this year, Abhay is candid and honest about his dwindling love for cinema. He's honest that he loves the work and even more so when he says that he can't bring it home just as much as he used to in the past. "I've been acting and it's been hectic jumping from one project to another so much so that I've lost a lot of that interest. So I hardly watch cinema or talk about it as much as I did when I started out. In the beginning it was all about movies. I've not stopped because I was bored. I was very happy doing the work but because it's my work, I suppose the last thing I wanted to do was talk about movies or watch movies. Also the kind of stuff I watch tends to be edgy and pushes the envelope. That frustrates me because I see it and wonder why I can't do that kind of stuff here." He's referring to the Aaron Ekhart's recent non-commercial flick, Towelhead, here.

Aware that his movies don't make box office millions, Abhay doesn't really care. Money to him is like points in a video game. If he doesn't score a high score now, he'll score it later is the motto he follows. "Money is a means to an end. I find it weird when money falls to the ground and people pick it up and pay their respects. You can't be serious. To respect it means not to throw it around, not worship it. I spend. I believe in living in the moment. I splurge probably to live the life I never had. I love travelling. I love staying in boutique hotels and being comfortable. As a student I was more of a backpacker but I can't do a lot of that anymore.

I don't spend on fancy watches and clothes - I don't like being flashy. Ever since the economy opened up a couple of years ago, there's a bigger middle class than ever before. People are travelling more, shopping more and watching TV more, which makes them more westernised than ever. This nouveau rich is all about showing the cash - maybe if our economy continues to prosper and becomes rich over many decades, then maybe, the necessity to flash your cash will be a lot less." As we draw to the end of our conversation Abhay tells me about sports cars he'd like to own and the frivolity of graphic novels. He was right. It's like I've known him forever and here I am making friends and telling secrets to the one person I shouldn't be talking to. He isn't a celebrity anymore. He's the guy back stage at a Something Relevant or Thermal and a Quarter Concert. As I reflect on the fact that he's disarmed the journalist inside me an old quote from a Kid Rock album sleeve seems to oddly sum up what Abhay Deol is all about - "If it looks good, you'll see it. If it sounds good, you'll hear it. If it's marketed right, you'll buy it. But...if it's real, you'll feel it.

Abhay is a jack of all trades
29/05/11

Actor Abhay Deol has always been a Jack of all trades and this time learning a new language seems to have caught his fancy. When he is not shooting, the actor is either travelling or he keeps himself busy with his hobbies and interests that take him around the world.

Abhay confesses, "I hate sitting at home doing nothing for long periods of time. If I am not shooting then I like to travel and go to places of my interest. I am a very outdoor kind of a person so I like being out and being one with nature."

Abhay, who is just back from Spain is now busy doing up his new home in Goa. That apart, he is also super-excited to be teaming up with filmmaker Dibakar Banerjee yet again after 'Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye' in a film titled 'Shanghai'. Apart from preparing for his role, Abhay is also required to learn a new dialect for the film. A source reveals. "Abhay is currently training in a dialect workshop for his role in the film that the director promises to be a cut above the rest. Abhay wants to make sure that he leaves no stone unturned and wants to play the part perfectly."

Abhay also had a great time shooting for Zoya Akhtar's 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara' in Spain which is where he also learnt sky-diving. Besides that, Abhay will also be seen in a lot of underwater sequences and additionally has also sung for a song in the film. "I was caught a little off guard when Zoya asked to me sing a few lines. She was sure that she wanted Hrithik, Farhan and me to sing in our original voices. I saw reason and finally gave in. It was fun though," he had earlier said.

Never compromise on the story: Abhay Deol
Mumbai Mirror Jul 31

Is he shy? Mostly not. Wary of the press? Yes. Bored answering the same 'Are you trying to be different' question? Positively.

Of the many adjectives used to describe the actor, unconventional, quirky, contemporary, arrogant and cagey are staples. Which of these has he adopted by design and which are inherent to him? As dimpled Deol, riding high on his latest hit Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, cheerfully settles in for a conversation at the palatial Deol bungalow, Juhu, nothing about him seems laboured.

The 'different' tag has stuck. The 35-year-old retorts, "I wish I could set the record straight. What can I say? If you ask me the same questions, you are bound to get the same answers. No one asks me about politics, religion, land-grabbing.

There is a lot more to me than just my 'different' choice of movies. My opinions on other subjects don't make for good enough copy. So we stick to jaded questions on my relationship with Preeti. Originality drives me. I am an individualist, my work reflects that."

Not the conventional hero, even though he has the dancing skills of the Deol family, Abhay's niche repertoire of movies range from a mildly-successful start with Socha Na tha, to a dramatic Dev D, frilly Aisha, clever Honeymoon Travels, understated Manorama Six Feet Under, among others. His latest hit is his most commercial attempt so far.

After a few hits and a few misses, this 'risky' actor seems to have cracked the code and won over industry skeptics. He's convinced it's not the originality they bought into, but the fact that the movies raked in money.

"The way this industry works, the powers that be are most comfortable when there is a formula to fall back on. If you break away and make a hit, they'll buy into you and try and tame that wild-streak into a series of similar stories," says the actor.

In the fight to constantly salvage his individuality and creativity, he scouts for scripts that bring him an honest, emotional connect. The Bollywood-ization of stories, as real as they may be, has always been difficult for him to comprehend. "Why romanticise a Devdas and turn him into some lovelorn depressed soul who died for his lover. He was an addict and died because of his addiction. My version of Devdas was born out of real instances, real people. The audience reacts to something it can associate with," he says.

It's probably this understanding and conviction that gives him confidence, often mistaken for arrogance, to take chances with scripts and new directors. "If the story is good it will sell no matter what. Never compromise on the story. Film-making is a risky business. If you pump in crores to market a weak script it's going to plummet no matter what you do. If the budget is small, risks are smaller. You can't predict the fate of a movie, but I am convinced that if the story agrees with me, it will do well," he says audaciously.

While his peers rake in the money with big banners and multi-crore projects, Abhay drums away to his own tune hoping that evolution will get acceptable in a rigid, formulaic industry. But somewhere, the lack of support pinches. "It would be nice if people were willing to take more chances," he says.

Does he fear taking himself too seriously? His practical streak seems to run as deep as his wild one. His fear of being too self-indulgent with his cinema has kept his choices in check. What made him naive as a newbie is now his strength.

From a series of flops, to now being bankable, his marketing strategies have evolved, as have his choices. He balances his business act by grabbing the pulse of the audience with Honeymoon Travels and Dev D on the one hand and having big banners such as UTV produce a string of releases, on the other.

Growing up as an argumentative but adequately-rebellious teen Abhay was surrounded by a robust Bollywood family. Uncle Dharmendra and brothers Sunny and Bobby, exposed him to the dualities of modern city-bred film-industry life as well as a conservative, conventional family and religious values. He questioned them like everyone else.

"Being an Arya Samaji we follow its reformed, inclusive version but being Punjabis we also have a strong conservative strain. I could see the hypocrisy early on, so I chose to step away. Women in short dresses have loose characters; watching a kissing scene make her a slut. These were concepts I had been exposed to but didn't believe in. My parents were forward thinking enough to raise me in the city." How do they handle what is written about him? "My mother came to ask me if I was engaged after someone printed a ridiculous story. They fall prey to it once in a while," he laughs.

Some actors just are, and some labour over what they'd like to be seen as. For Abhay, acting is inborn, labouring over it turns into a craft. "I didn't think I was eccentric until people started to say so. What's quirky to some, seems normal to me. I like the fact that acting is when you are at your most vulnerable. If you're honest with it, your vulnerability is accepted, appreciated. As an actor, people buy into you."

His light-hearted, witty ease and intuitive disposition leads one to believe that there is honesty in his quest for eclectic and sound cinematic material. His uniqueness is no front. He won't conform to a standard, not even the bohemian one.

Not stardom, but a good script interests me: Abhay

Abhay Deol, on being selective about scripts and living life on his own terms, in a chat session with TOI

You were here a few months back promoting Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. Another promotional tour brings you to Ahmedabad now. Does it get tiring?
Honestly speaking, promoting a film is 'work' for me, which I don't enjoy at all. If you ask me about shooting, yes I love it. A good movie always finds its audience! When we promote a movie we have to talk about our equations with the director, what my character is all about — wonder why people would be interested in knowing all that without watching the film. I would rather prefer talking about the film after its release. It's pointless to promote a film this way, but till we have a better alternative to this system, it's my job and I will do it.

Has it been difficult creating your own space in Bollywood with the kind of films you choose to do?
I am happy that I am getting to do what I like, because it is difficult to make a place for yourself here. You have to remember that a lot of money is at stake and your career is also at stake. Also, formulas work here. But some meaningful films are clicking with the masses along with the masala films, so I am getting to work with interesting directors. I am happy that I don't have to do the run-of-the-mill stuff.

So are you happy somewhere that you are not a star?
Yes, if you define the 100 crore club movies and the lead actors who star in them, then I am not a star. But I don't care for stardom. I care for a good script. Having said that, I have always played lead roles in my films. And when I did Dev. D, people felt it would not work, yet it got people to the theatres to watch it.

But ZNMD put you on a different echelon with masses appreciating your work?
Yes, that was because the film was marketed and distributed well. Also the film was a great example of escapist cinema that masses love to watch on a weekend. Zoya's perception of the character she had etched for me also worked.

You are exploring the action-thriller genre this year.
Yes, after Shanghai I have Chakravyuh, and two more action films that I can't talk about. It's a coincidence that all of them are action based, I hadn't planned it.

Did you like your partner Preeti Desai's performance in Shor in the City?
Of course, I liked it!

Your cousins Sunny and Bobby Deol are not doing many films. Would you like to comment?
That's because they are highly underrated!

You have earlier mentioned how you are 'metrosexual' in your thinking and do not wish to live life by the rules. Is that true?
I don't care about these tags, but yes, I believe in living life with an open mind, with a free spirit. I am a normal guy and don't get bogged down by the rules of the city and the ideals laid down by the culture. I believe in equal rights for men and women and that every individual should have the freedom to live their life. I've said this many times before, marriage is insignificant when you are in love with someone. I believe in the freedom of choice and the freedom to love, that puts me in love with life.
