Lucky Oye!'
'Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!' based on 'Super thief Devender'
Saturday, November 08, 2008
Director Dibakar Banerjee's second film "Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!", about a thief, is based on the real life story of well-known thief Devender alias Bunty, who is currently awaiting his trial.
In the film Abhay Deol plays the thief and his character has an uncanny resemblance to Bunty, who, the police said, was addicted to burglaries. Abhay's modus operandi is to outsmart people and policemen with his sharp mind and wit. His character in the film is smitten by the lifestyle of rich and affluent families in Delhi. Though Banerjee denies a straight lift of the plot from Bunty's life, he says that he researched a lot about criminals' minds from news clippings and TV shows to make the film realistic.
Bunty was allegedly involved in over 500 cases of burglaries, house thefts and auto thefts in Chennai, Bangalore, Chandigarh, and Delhi and was caught in 2002.
Lucky Oye!
Lucky Oye!
Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! to be screened at NYU
Friday, 21 November , 2008
For the North American promotion of Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!, UTV Motion Pictures will be holding a special screening at New York University on November 24.
The free screening will be open to the public and film students. This screening was the brainchild of Abhay Deol, who wanted the first international screening to be a non-elitist event. UTV Motion Pictures is confident that the online blogging community will generate enough positive word of mouth to entice non-desi viewers as well.
Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! releases all over North America during the Thanksgiving Week on November 26 and on November 28 in India.

"No matter what people say about Oye Lucky Lucky Oye, they will surely say Abhay has given a sizzling performance"- Dibaker Banerjee
...Whose choice was Abhay as the lead of Oye Lucky Lucky Oye?
I have been watching all of Abhay's movies and I must say that he has impressed me because all he wanted to do was act. He doesn't want special costumes, dark glasses nothing at all. He just wants to portray characters and get into the skin of characters. No matter what people say about Oye Lucky Lucky Oye, they will surely say Abhay has given a sizzling performance.

Vishnu (Abhay Deol), a restless young man, itches to escape his father's faltering hair oil business.
An old truck beckons, which, Vishnu sees as his ticket to freedom. He offers to drive the antique Chevy across the desert to the sea, where it has been sold to a local museum. As he sets off across the harsh terrain of desert India, he discovers he's not merely transporting a battered vehicle but an old touring cinema.
Along the way, Vishnu reluctantly picks up a young runaway (Mohammed Faizal Usmani), a wandering old entertainer (Satish Kaushik) and a striking gypsy woman (Tannishtha Chatterjee - Brick Lane). Together they roam in the barren land, searching for water and an elusive fair. The journey turns dire when they are waylaid by corrupt cops and a notorious water lord.
The key to their freedom is the eccentric collection of films and the two forty-year-old film projectors in the back of the truck. As in '1001 Nights', if the films are good, they live and move on. If the films are boring, they face death in the outback.
The journey proves transformative for each of the travelers, but especially for Vishnu who discovers life, love and laughter on the Indian highway.
Produced by the US-based Ross Katz and Susan B. Landau, and presented by The Indian Film Company and Studio 18, the script of the Dev Benegal-directed feature was an official selection at the L'Atelier du Cannes in 2006. Road, Movie (in Hindi) is India's first breakthrough feature at TIFF'09 - an official selection that will have a world premiere at The Winter Garden Theatre on September 18' 2009.
