ABHAY DESPERATE TO WORK WITH BROTHERS

By S Kumar - Eye TV India Bureau

Tete-a-Tete

As the new member of Deol family didn't get much appreciation from his debut movie 'Socha Na Tha' opposite Ayesha Takia, however this junior Deol doesn't want to sit at home. Yes, we are talking about Abhay Deol. Abhay, a graduate from Otis Parson's School of Fine Arts and Design, is nowadays busy in director Shivam Nair's forthcoming movie 'Ahista Ahista' starring Soha Ali Khan, Shyan Munshi besides himself. Smashits caught the upcoming star of the Deol Family on the sets of 'Ahista Ahista' at Red Fort in Delhi, where the actress Soha Ali was present with her mother, actress Sharmila Tagore besides others. Our s team chatted with the star.

Excerpts of our chat with him-:

What is 'Aahistey Aahistey' all about?

The story revolves around a businessman who works in Chandni Chowk (Old Delhi). The story is based on various incidents which happen in his life.

What's your character role?

I am playing the role of that businessman.

What's your experience while shooting in Delhi?

Shooting in Delhi is great. The only problem is the cold weather in which we have to shoot. In Mumbai, the weather is moderate. Here, the temperature is very low.

Where are you going to shoot next?

We shall be going to Nainital from here for the shoot.

Any particular role you would like to play in future?

I am ready to do any type of role. If I like any script I can play any role.

When could we watch you with your brothers?

I am also very desperate to work with my brothers. I hope the people could watch all of us together soon.

How do you keep yourself fit?

I go to gym everyday and jog. I also drink a lot of water and eat healthy food. Besides this, I sleep a lot.

Any message for your fans?

I want the people to watch my films and give the same love as they have given to my other family members.

Yana & I are bad friends:Abhay
25 Feb 2008, 0000 hrs IST, Mohini Mehrotra ,TNN

He may shrink away from ‘kutte mein tera khoon pee jaaonga’ kind of roles but there is no getting away from family connections. Abhay Deol got a taste of it when he was mobbed by a few elderly people while shooting in Delhi. The reason for this unique mobbing:

They wanted to meet Dharmendra’s nephew. But Abhay, who is shooting in the city for his film Oh Lucky, loved the whole experience. “The people here are very warm, much more than they are in Mumbai. And given the fact that I am from the Deol family, I get this kind of reaction here always,” he says.

Moving on to things more controversial, what is his take on the alleged link-up with Yana Gupta? “We are ‘bad friends’. If I say we are good friends, invariably everyone will jump the gun and say that they know what the term means. So I would prefer to say we are ‘bad friends’. You can interpret it the way you see fit but the truth is that I want to be single for a while.”

That said, he attacks the plate of samosas in front of him. A pointed look at it gets this reaction, “It is one of those rare days when I am indulging myself. Usually, it is steamed veggies and vegetable juice for me. I was just craving for a samosa yesterday and somebody got them for me. But I do take care of my physique. I have four packs and I don’t plan to go in for six. I am posing topless in my movie. Actually, Paresh Rawal and I are doing a Govinda and Salman.”

He is going shirtless but don’t expect him to dance around trees. “I have four movies lined up this year and none of them are regular Bollywood films. Fortunately, I haven’t got those kind of offers and I am grateful for that. I would never dance for money. You wouldn’t see me dancing in weddings either. I would only do the matka-jhatka roles when I stop getting work and I am left with no choice,” he laughs.

August 20, 2008 (Sawf News) - The promotional video shoot of UTV's Dibaker Banerjee directed Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye took place a few days back at Film City, in Sankraman studio. It's Dibaker's second film after Khosla Ka Ghosla. The entire cast of the film - Abhay Deol, Neetu Chandra, Paresh Rawal and Archana Puran Singh were shooting for the video which is also the title track of the song, Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye.
The set was designed in to a cool garage, which had every thing in it right from a new flashing car to beer bottles to antique furniture to a Christmas tree etc. the garage looked like a cool den of a hero.

Neetu Chandra looked stunning in a little white dress, Paresh Rawal looked like a typical Delhiet suited in formals ditto was Archana Puransingh, she looked like a typical wana be Punjabi lady which exactly is her character in the film, dressed in a salwar kameez, a cardigan and a cap on top of it. Abhay Deol looked charming as usual with his dimpled smile dressed in a casual jeans and a formal shirt with a blazer adding to the look.

The video basically revolved around Abhay Deol, who plays the title character called Lucky in the film; he was surrounded by all these characters who were singing the song for him. The choreographers left the artists do the steps in their own style instead of following verbatim, they were asked to just have fun in which Archana Puran Singh walked away with the cake, she was heard getting compliments from the video director for exuding great energy level and living up to the fun element of the song, so did Paresh Rawal and Neetu.

The shooting continued till late evening.

Et tu, Abhay Deol?
by Divya Nair

K L Saigal did it. Dilip Kumar followed suit. Shah Rukh Khan couldn’t resist the role and now it’s Abhay Deol playing the same character. After Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas, one would have thought that perhaps the filmmakers would let some originality creep and leave the 1917 novel at peace. But what don you know. This time however, there is going to be a slight change. Instead of the dhoti-clad Devdas, it’s going to be a modernized Dev D. Anurag Kashyap will direct the film.

The role has been done to death. Despite that, there is something about the story that tickles the makers’ brains. Abhay who came up with the concept of making a modern Devdas doesn’t think it’s anything new though. He says, “The concept was mine. I gave it a different treatment. Convey it in 20 pages or two, essentially after the first few pages, you get to know the what, why, who, when of the story. It is nothgin new. Baz Luhrmann did with Romeo-Juliet. I did it with Devdas.”

Often films on historical topics don’t last for long as they manage to get embroiled in controversies. Look at Jodhaa Akbar, for instance. Nevertheless, it doesn’t bother Abhay. “I think Jodhaa Akbar got into a mess because of its historical facts. Devdas is not a historical piece. Anyway, people who want to make controversies will do so for whatever reasons they want to. I don’t think Devdas has such issues. We can’t cash in on it either,” smiles Abhay. By the way, according to the grapevine, even Sudhir Mishra intends to make a film on the same lines. We wonder if it’s going to be another case of a horde of Bhagat Singh films being released at around the same time. That would make for some good teatime gossip now.

‘I have used Devdas as an adjective’
PiyasreeDasgupta
Posted online: Friday , August 29, 2008 at 1139 hrs

Getting KJo to make a movie without SRK would probably be easier than stripping the cryptic, stylized rhetoric off filmmaker Anurag Kashyap.
So, in between party plans, random autographs and long phone calls post a book launch at the Starmark, South City Mall, Talk tried catching up with the metaphors yet to hit the theatres
What is your latest film Dev.D about?
It’s a serious film about relationships. This time it’s a musical with 15-16 songs with music scored by Amit Trivedi (of Aamir fame). The film is ready and we are targeting a late October-November release.

What has Devdas to do with it?
I have tried exploring relationships through the phenomenon that is Devdas. In fact, I have tried using Devdas as an adjective, not as a work of literature or a cinema.

Why did you choose Devdas as a medium to explore relationships?
Devdas, romance and relationships are deeply entwined in the Indian psyche. Devdas is considered a quintessence of love, so it was a natural choice.

Who plays the lead in your film?
Abhay Deol plays the title role and the other leads are Mahi Gill and Kalki Kockli.

And what made you cast Abhay Deol...
Basically, the idea of Dev.D came from Abhay. We have know each other for a long time, over 12 years now...

Are you still looking at a niche film-educated audience?
(Laughs) No at all. Why do you think I mentioned 15 songs?

Have you been blogging also?
Yes, sporadically. But I think it has become a sort of fad with people now. I wouldn’t say they are not earnest to the art of blogging, but the whole thing has become a little strange now.

The Journeyman, Abhay Deol

Saturday, November 22, 2008

Abhay Deol has always taken the road less travelled: From moving out of a sprawling bungalow into a one-bedroom apartment, to taking a risk with every new film. Defying the fact that he is the youngest in a family that has given the industry three ‘macho’ heroes, Abhay is out to carve a niche for himself

When Socha Na Tha was in production, life was a struggle for Abhay Deol. “It was a period of severe angst, frustration, anger, and every other negative emotion possible,” he says, talking about the three-year period.

Four years and five films later, the struggle continues. “At that time it was about getting the film released, then the struggle was to get more films; now it’s about being able to pick the good ones and ensure they reach a wide audience,” says Abhay.

Life could have been very different for the youngest Deol. Born to Ajit Singh, the younger brother of veteran superstar Dharmendra, Abhay grew up in a family of cinematic achievers.

His cousins, Sunny and Bobby, had both successfully made their mark on the industry as actors, and Abhay’s entry — although not keenly anticipated — was looked forward to with some interest by the film fraternity.

With an uncle and two elder brothers, who were very much a part of the typical ‘Bollywood’ set-up, all Abhay had to do was follow in their footsteps. Instead, he chose to start his career with an off-beat romantic film made by first-time director, Imtiaz Ali, and follow it up with some more innovative films.

“Everytime I start a movie, I get warnings on how the film will not work. And when they don’t, I get the ‘I-told-you-so’ line. But I don’t care! I don’t have to follow the route others follow. I have my own goals,” says Abhay.

Socha Na Tha was a disaster at the box office. Although Abhay received some encouraging reviews for his acting skills, he was criticised for his hairstyle and appearance, and brushed off as a ‘weak’ Deol. Many predicted the end was near.

When Ahista Ahista released, the critics were unanimous in their acceptance of Abhay as an actor who was ‘here to stay’. In the meantime, Socha Na Tha made its debut on the small screen and endeared itself to an audience who never gave the film a shot in cinemas.

Imtiaz Ali’s fresh screenplay and Abhay’s ‘confused young boy’ act made the film a hit on TV. “Even when it seemed like Socha Na Tha was taking forever to be completed, there were offers to do other big banner films, which I refused. I was very clear that I wanted Socha Na Tha to be my first release. I had full trust in Imtiaz’s ability.”

A few months later, Abhay got his first hit with Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd. The tide was turning. With people having only good things to say about him, it was a time to capitalise and sign some big films.

Abhay did exactly the opposite. He continued acting with first-time directors who had a different story to tell. So if Ek Chaalis Ki Last Local was a one-night tale about what transpires after a man misses the last train back home, Manorama Six Feet Under was about a struggling detective novelist sucked into a real-life detective drama.

Ek Chaalis… was an average grosser, while Manorama was a commercial failure.

However, like in other Abhay Deol films, there was never any paucity of praise. The writing was clear — Abhay Deol’s films may not set the cash registers ringing, but they were good films.

“People in the industry always talk of commerce. I get a lot of offers from big producers to do three-hero films. Most of these are ‘proposals’ — money-making initiatives — and usually lifted from a Hollywood comedy, like Three Men And A Baby. Even I want my films to make money, but that can’t be the only driving factor na,” says Abhay, quick to point out that he did the multi-starrer Honeymoon Travels… because he had a substantial role to play.

“I have to bring something to every film I do. It’s not like I’m looking to hog the limelight or anything. In fact, I believe a film needs a lot of people to come together, for it to work. There are many at play — cinematographers, editors, writers — that make the final product possible. As an actor, I enter the set-up merely as a tool to convey a story to an audience. I believe that we are all part of a jigsaw puzzle, who need to merge for it to be completed,” says Abhay whose next film, Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! is his first by a director who has made a film before.

“It is comforting to know that director Dibakar Banerjee has delivered a hit before. But more importantly the film, Khosla Ka Ghosla, was a film to be proud of,” says Abhay who has Anurag ‘No Smoking’ Kashyap’s Dev. D to follow. He is happy that he needn’t worry, for a change, about marketing these films. “This is the first time that a big production house — UTV Spotboy Films — is backing the project. I can relax knowing that they will give the films a good release. My career depends on their performance. The launch of my production company, Forbidden Films, depends on it.”

Ask him if the banner’s name was an obvious one, and he grins, “What to do now? All my films have charted unexplored territory. I want to continue that trend with my banner too. As an actor, my work is confined to approving a story, coming to the sets on time, delivering what my director wants, and then leaving it to the marketing guys to take over. However, you need a good product to market, and as a producer, I’ll look to get just that — a good product.”

As with his films, Abhay continues to break tradition, even at home. Having spent his childhood in the family’s sprawling Juhu bungalow, with six cousins and other family members, Abhay moved out a few years ago. “Living alone in Los Angeles — where I did a course in Theatre and Fine Arts — got me used to an independent lifestyle.

When I returned, all my family would have wanted was for me to live with them, but I told them I wanted to move out. They were like, ‘It’s okay to live in a big family you know, it’s part of our culture’. But eventually they were at peace with my decision and happy that I would be living in the same locality. The bungalow is just a few steps away and I drop in every now and then.”

Abhay admits that his choice of films did worry his family, initially. “That’s just because they were scared. They all know the inner workings of the industry. Every time I did something that was out-of-the-box, they were apprehensive.”

But there’s one person Abhay has always found an ally in — whether it is to do with his choice of films or the way he leads his life — his uncle, Dharmendra. “Believe it or not, he is my biggest support. Every time he sees my films, he is ecstatic. He then tells the others in the family: ‘Leave the boy alone, he knows what he’s doing’. Nothing is more encouraging than that,” he says happily.

I want to do a film with uncle Dharmendra: Abhay Deol

New Delhi, Nov 24, 2008.

Abhay Deol hopes that one day he will get to share screen space with his uncle, veteran actor Dharmendra, and cousins Sunny and Bobby Deol.

"I really want to do a film with my uncle and my cousins. I'm sure it will be really interesting to work with them," Abhay told reporters.

"I am scared to work with my uncle and Sunny Bhaiya (Sunny Deol) because I don't know if I will be able to play anybody else around them apart from my usual self. I feel acting with Bobby will be much easier since we are closer in age," he added.

Abhay said that uncle Dharmendra has been very supportive of his decisions and always appreciated him for his performances and selection of roles.

"My cousins and my uncle have been iconic heroes in the industry and I don't think I'm anywhere close to that, but I'm happy that they like my work. They are my elders and it's natural for me to look up to them," Abhay said.

Abhay made his debut in 2005 with "Socha Na Tha", a home production. He then went on to prove his acting prowess with films like "Ahista Ahista", "Manorama Six Feet Under", "Ek Chalis Ki Last Local" and "Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd".

After giving critically acclaimed performances in the past, he is now ready and upbeat about his forthcoming film, "Oye Lucky!Lucky Oye!" directed by Dibakar Banerjee of "Khosla Ka Ghosla" fame.

"The film is about a thief. He is a man who wants to live a luxurious life. But along with the ambition that he has to become somebody, move up the social ladder and have a huge amount of money, he also wants other things like respectability, care," said the actor who plays the protagonist in the film.

"Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!" also stars Paresh Rawal in a triple role and actress Neetu Chandra in the lead.

The film is scheduled to hit the screens Nov 28.

Abhay, who is working with Paresh Rawal for the first time, said he was initially "nervous" at sharing the same platform with such a senior actor.

"It was really good working with Paresh Rawal. I was nervous at first because he is such a big star and I love his performances, but the initial nervousness went away once I got to know him. He is a very simple and hardworking man.

"While working with him, my performance also got better, because when you work with a great actor, your timing also falls in place. I was glad that I got an opportunity like this,"
Abhay said.

The actor who has a penchant for unusual scripts and different subjects had only worked with debutant directors before "Oye Lucky...".

However, he maintains that it was not a "conscious decision" to work only with the new crop of filmmakers.

"I knew that it might be a risk working with new directors and I didn't want to do that. But it just worked out this way. There was no conscious decision behind it," Abhay said.

"I just read the scripts and I really liked them, and it just happened that all of them had a debut director attached to them," he added.

Abhay said he is interested in producing a film next year.
