Abhay Deol, Bollywood's newest romantic hero, reveals his perfect woman
August 17, 2005

Poised to follow in his older brothers' footsteps, Bobby and Sunny, for those of you out of the loop, Abhay Deol, is the latest member of the Deol family to enter the Indian film line. Launched by cousin brother, Sunny Deol, Abhay's first film, "Socha Na Tha" (also starring Ayesha Takia) promises to move some thunder and entertain audiences with laughter, wit, romance and family drama.

Just as the suave actor is ready to take that all important career step onto the silver screen, and as a young bachelor, dare we say, step into the hearts of women. ShaadiTimes caught up the debonair hunk to find out more about his life outside the filmi arena of "lights, camera and action." In an exclusive one on one tete a tete the young actor revealed some pretty interesting viewpoints-especially about the woman he hopes to meet one day.

At first glance his eyes automatically give the tell-tale signs of his lineage. He has shades of both his brothers and his legendary Uncle, Dharmendra, in his demeanor. Excessively polite and well-manner, Abhay is refreshingly down-to-earth despite the close proximity to fame, and limelight all of his life. He's taller and lankier than expected, a slim yet sturdy six foot one, and surprisingly intelligent, clever and jovial.

A graduate from Otis Parson's School of Fine Arts and Design, Abhay, enjoyed the few years he spent overseas studying in Pasedena, California. At the famous college of design he pursued an education in his first love-art. At this time he concentrated on polishing his skills and fine-tuning his multi-faceted talent in sketching, design and painting. After returning to Mumbai he worked on various projects with other talented celebrity kids such as Suzanne Roshan- "we both worked on a wall mural of Madonna and Prince". He also tried his hand at cartooning for a while. "I think I always knew I wanted to act," he clarifies. And the next logical stage of his career path was instinctively to follow his heart which lead him into the world of filmdom. His film, "Socha Na Tha" has taken three years from inception to completion. "I've literally seen Ayesha grow up in front of me, (Takia was 16 years old when the filming began)" he laughs. It is also director/writer Imtiaz Ali's maiden venture. "I don't want to become typecast," says Abhay. "I would like to do all types of films if given an opportunity."

I don't want clever conversation
I never want to work that hard
I just want someone that I can talk to
I want you just the way you are. (Billy Joel)

And given the opportunity what type of woman would pique his interest? "Someone with the right attitude," he says without hesitation, and continues, "I do not like arrogance or rudeness. When I say attitude I mean a woman may be beautiful and confident, but I think arrogance is a turn off."

"I also like subtlety in a woman," he reveals. "It's unfortunate that we live in a male-dominated industry and men tend to display their confidence more aggressively."
Thirdly, Abhay looks for a sense of direction. "She has to be focused on herself, her goals, and the people around her. This in a way would mean she would have to be somewhat a giving individual. I don't mean selfless like Mother Teresa but someone who is not totally self-centred either," he qualifies. The other important qualities Abhay's dream girl should hold include, "A sense of humor. I think the ability to laugh at anything is priceless." He pauses for a moment, "She should be creative," he mulls. "I am creative and I think it's important to be able to bounce off ideas with someone who is like-minded. I also love traveling so she should be adventurous. And lastly we should be able to trust each other unconditionally." Whew. Does she have to be sexy too? He sums it up, "Well if she has compassion and humility than she definitely is sexy?"
Abhay managed to side-line the physical attributions of the woman of his dreams up to this point. He laughs when asked whether she has to be tall. "I think tall men do look good with taller women, but that's just a stereotype. Sometimes shorter people tend to be more assertive and intelligent to overcome their height."

Is there anyone out there that might fit the above profile? "Maybe Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie," he admits and then points out, "She's not tall. I like everything about her. There is something tragic about her almost as if she is holding onto her sanity. And yet she is doing more good. She is a goodwill Ambassador to the UN. Sometimes I think when you help someone you may need help yourself."
"I also find Madhuri Dixit extremely attractive," he says. "She's beautiful and has a lovely smile. She also carries herself with a certain manner. She's aware she is beautiful, but she is not arrogant about her looks." He adds, "She has a sense of direction. We need women like that in the industry who have more giving into them."

His third and final choice from the depth and breadth of international delectable divas is the delicious Monica Bellucci (film: Matrix 2, Malena). "She has that classicism about her. I love her dark hair, and luscious lips," he says. "I am not attracted to women with blonde hair, but if I had to choose it would be the actress Gwen Stefani."

After a little cajoling Abhay tells us he recently broke up with his girlfriend of sometime who fit the above qualities. "It was tough to break-up," admits the young Deol, "I don't jump into relationships easily, so it was serious."

A little like his character in "Socha Na Tha", perhaps, who realises true love when its least expected. We'll have to catch-up with this Bollywood bachelor at a later date to find out if he's found the woman of his dreams or whether she finds him.

"My brothers have their niche, I'll carve my own"- Abhay Deol
Friday, February 18, 2005

He's not just another Deol from the khandan. Not that larger than life macho hero, this one is a regular boy next-door...Abhay Deol has arrived. Fourth from one of the most respected clans in the industry Abhay will make his debut in Socha Na Tha. We catch him on a lazy afternoon at his Juhu residence and here he is pouring out all that you wanted to know about this Deol dude!

How satisfying is Socha Na Tha as a debut?
I don't think I could have a better debut film than Socha Na Tha; it's been a great experience, it's been a great film and I am extremely satisfied. We all have put our heart and energy into this. It means the world to me right now... What can you say, its your baby, you want it to grow, you want it to be successful.

Tell us something about the film and the role you play?
Well I play a regular kid from the city, who is born and raised in Bombay like myself, gone to the States to study like myself and he is the kind of person who cannot live up to responsibilities. In the sense even in the film he makes mistakes as a result of which he falls into trouble and creates trouble for others. Instead of apologising or speaking about the situation he creates another situation, which is equally false. So he is a bit of an idiot, I would say. The film is romantic, its light, it has its funny moments. It's not very heavy, weighing you down kind of movie.

The film looks like a mushy love story, so do we see any Deol brand action in the film?
No not in this film because its not required in the script.

How was it working with Ayesha?
Well it was a good experience; it is definitely something that I will remember for the rest of my lifetime. Your first film is something that stays in your memory. She was 16 when we started and I was like 9 years older to her. But as things progressed I realized that the main thing is that the girl has talent and as far as the film goes I knew that we are really safe with her. And I have a great on screen chemistry with her, which shows. So it's been a nice experience and poor thing, I gave her a hard time on the sets.

When did you decide to take up acting as a profession?
I was always into acting, I remember even in school I used to do theatre, it was always at the back of my mind. But I never pursued it, as I never thought that perhaps I would get into this. It was a thought and whether I do it well or not I was open. I used to sketch a lot. So I was into fine arts and did graphics initially. And I think somewhere around the age of 18 when I was in the middle of my fine arts course I decided that acting was what I want to do.

Does coming from a family deep-rooted in the industry make things easy?
It makes things easy in the sense that doors open for you easily, you already know people inside and even if you don't know them, you are going to meet them and they are going to say that he is so and so's son or brother. So they meet you easily. But it ends there.

Have you signed any more films as yet?
At the moment I haven't signed anything, but I am reading two scripts both of which are quite nice actually. But I am going to take one step at a time. What happens in this industry is that you lose control of your career. I like to be in control as a person. I want to see how this film of mine does and then see which is the next best thing for me to do.

What are the kinds of films you are looking forward to do?
Films like these; where I get involved while reading the script, I am ready to do all kinds of films. I don't want to do films where I am portrayed larger than life. I don't want to do films where I am a hero, which one as a common man cannot be. I like real stuff; I like stuff that you can relate to. You know it doesn't matter to me if it's an action film or a dramatic film or a comedy. It just matters to me that the character is interesting, that I learn something from it or I am entertained by it.

Besides Imtiaz name one director you would have liked to debut with?
I am very happy with Imtiaz...but besides him, I have a friend in the industry who I want to work with. You wouldn't know him yet, his name is Vikramaditya Motwani. He is a great person and he is a friend of mine from school, he has some brilliant ideas and a brilliant script with me in mind. Anurag Kashyap is one I would have loved to debut with, Shreeram Raghavan who did Ek Hasina Thi had a film with me in mind. I hope he does it.

Sunny brought the macho look; Bobby the suave look to Bollywood, what do you think will be your USP?
I am waiting to see that what the audience thinks my USP is. I don't want to lay down that this is what it's going to be. But if I had to pick something I know that my strength lies in casualty, a certain vulnerability, just the way I go about things. I think that everything is so larger than life these days and I so much want to keep things grounded and real; if that clicks then that would be my USP. But I am not sure it could be anything tomorrow.

Any pressure due to the comparisons that may be drawn between the other Deols and you?
I don't like to be compared to my brothers; I think they have their own niche, I'll carve my own. But yes I get compared all the time, I don't really want them but I know that it will happen. You do feel the pressure sometimes, but then there are some people who are just there to compare you, but then some people surprise me and look at me as an individual. So it's just back and forth all the time.

Abhay Deol : This cool Deol will make a difference !

Family connection :
In his second film, Shola Aur Shabnam (1961) Dharmendra looked like Abhay Deol looked in his first film, “Socha Na tha”(2005). Dharmendra became a stalwart actor and star in later years. Dharmendra did all kind of films and he excelled in every kind of films. He was equally good in romance, comedy, action, tragedy etc.
Dharmendra‘s elder son “Sunny Deol” was launched with a super hit love story “Betaab”(1983). Sunny was good looking, had a great body and very communicative eyes. He started with a love story but soon after Arjun, Directors saw an angry young man in him and he became trapped in the image of an action hero. It looks hard for him to breake this image.
Dharmendra’s younger son, Bobby Deol also started with a love story with sufficient scope to show off his muscles in action scenes in the film Barsat(1995). Bobby often also dabbles in to action packed films.
Sunny and Bobby both brothers can be said to follow their father’s image of an action hero. Their comedy is nowhere close to their fathers. Their romantic roles don’t match up with him. They have grasped one element from his vast acting pool, that is anger and Dharmendra’s other threads of lineage have been remained unexplored by his sons.
Dharmendra did not launch his nephew Abhay Deol with usual big films as he did with Sunny(Betaab) and Bobby(Barsaat) rather Abhay was launched with first time director Imtiaz Ali in the film ” Socha na Tha “. Film was appreciated and Abhay and Ayesha Takia both showed their talent in this film.

Acting : Here comes an actor in the league of Amol Palekar

Abhay is a tall man but he does not posses gymnasium built muscular body. He does not look like a greek god as his uncle Dharmendra looked in his youthful years. That’s why a film like “Socha Na Tha” suited him and he exploited the opportunity. He started with a low budget film which does not go over the top in its treatment.

There was an actor, called Amol Palekar(now famous director), who gave several hit films in the era of Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Vinod Khanna, Shatrughan Sinha, Shashi Kapoor and Jeetendra. Amol Palekar was very different from any above mentioned actor. He acted in different films and he played different roles. His roles of middle class ordinary man are not even compared with similar roles played by Naseeruddin Shah or Farooq Sheikh. Amol’s light films which often had full dose of comedies made their own impact.
People join hindi film industry to become like Raj-Dev-Dilip, or Rajesh Khanna or Amitabh, Dharmendra, Vinod Khanna etc and few join it to become like Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri or Nana Patekar but seldom anyone will say he wishes to become an actor like Amol Palekar.
With his first film “Socha Na tha” Abhay Deol generated hope that here comes an actor who can fill the gap generated by absence of Amol Palekar and his kind of films. Abhay’s second film “Ahista Ahista” further strengthened that hope.
He did good in comedy scenes in both the films and he improved in his second film in the emotional scenes and where he had to atone for his own mistakes. He certainly improved a lot in his second film from his first film.
Abhay can do what Amol Palekaar could do in late 70s. Abhay look sgenuine as a common man and his acting style is not loud. He does not try to over power his character without a need.
If directors wish to recreate those kind of films like, Chitchor, chhoti Si baat, Golmal, Naram Garam etc then Abhay can provide him as the man who could play lead characters in such films. These films may have small dreams but to fulfil those common ordinary dreams we need actors like Amol Palekar and Abhay Deol. Masses can associate with such characters and actors. For now, satisfaction is to see someone capable to go on path of Amol Palekar, an actor and star of his own category. Who knows Amol Palekar, who is now a reputed director himself, casts Abhay in any or some of his films.

Amol Palker had a very special trait of taking pause in between the words in a dialogue and normally at unexpected place and kind of dialogue delivery which made Amol Palekar very special. Abhay also has that touch in his dialogue delivery. Sometimes he just say non-stop and sometimes he unexpectedly takes pauses.

Last night after viewing second time Socha Na tha, I felt an urge to write on him and stopped publishing an already written post. He is commercially successful or not but he gave satisfaction of watching an actor with a difference and who has potential to play role of ordinary man with ability. SNT, reveals that cameraman had to take attention in which he handled his actors through his camera and Abhay has suffered at several places from this factor in SNT. In Ahista Ahista he got better camera treatment.

As a new actor, he is a hope. Some of similarities do not make him limited to Amol Palekar only. Rather this factor generates a vast horizon before him. That genere of films need to be made. People have always liked those kind of films. Till now he has done only light roles but he has potential and he represents lineage of Dharmendra, a very fine actor, and he must have potential to play many other kind of roles, which we will witness in coming years.

It's tough being a Deol in Bollywood: Abhay Deol
By Shweta Thakur Sep 15, 2007, 15:33 GMT

New Delhi, Sep 15 (IANS) Abhay Deol, nephew of veteran actor Dharmendra and cousin of Sunny and Bobby Deol, says it's not easy to make a mark in the Hindi film industry if you belong to a star family.

'When I joined the film industry there was a lot of curiosity among people because I am a Deol. It was difficult to find an individual identity. Connection with a star family sparks the expectation of people both inside and outside the industry,' Abhay told IANS.

He was in the capital to promote his next film 'Manorama Six Feet Under', a murder mystery.

'People might make a film just to launch you but at the end of the day your performance is what makes a difference,' said Abhay, who was launched in his home production 'Socha Na Tha'.

'I am not as dashing and dynamic like my uncle and cousins. And it wasn't easy for me to find a foothold. After my first release, I got a lot of negative feedback.

'Industry people criticised me saying that romantic and comedy films won't work for me and outside people alleged I had made it easily to Bollywood,' he said.

Abhay, who plays an amateur detective in a small town in 'Manorama ...', hopes the movie will change his romantic image. The film also stars Gul Panag and Raima Sen.

'I play a serious role in the film. I hope after this film my image of a romantic hero changes. I do not want to be typecast.

'I know I am new to the industry but people are acknowledging my work and I want to push the envelope further. I want to do different roles to an extent that experimentation becomes the expectation of people from me,' he beamed.

Some of his earlier releases include 'Ahista Ahista', 'Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd' and 'Ek Chalis Ki Last Local'.

His forthcoming films include 'Junction', 'Dev D' and 'Oye Lucky Lucky Oye'

From HTPL, I learnt not to go for a package tour for my honeymoon" - Abhay Deol
Monday, February 12, 2007

Abhay Deol has played the intense guy in Socha Na Tha and Ahista Ahista. Now watch the dimpled Deol in director Reema Kagti''s Honeymoon Travels....., as he frolics, romances and dances in delectable Goa!

A travel agency offering package tours for honeymooning couples, and taking six such couples on a bus ride in Goa ! How did Reema Kagti's idea appeal to you for her film, Honeymoon Travels...?
It was a brilliant narrative and I laughed as I read the concept on paper. The script brought out this most beautiful phase in the lives of six couples in a very quaint and funny way.

The promos of Honeymoon Travels... show you having a ball on the beaches and doing the tango on a yacht with your screen wife. Did it instill a desire to go in for marriage in real life too?
Oh, it was fantastic to play a newly wedded guy for the camera! But in real life I am quite happy being single! Trust me on that! (Laughs)

You seem to be very adept at doing the tango as we can see in your track Pyaar Ki Ek Kahaani Suno…
Actually like Sunny Bhaiyya (Sunny Deol) I have two left feet! But Reema Kagti had choreographer Kunjan specially flown from Mumbai to Goa to train Minissha and me for almost two weeks. I always thought I was a clumsy dancer, but Minissha had full faith in me and the final result as you can see, is pretty decent! (Laughs)

Since you are on your honeymoon in the film, any bold scenes between you and Minissha?
The intimate scenes are romantic but comic. Nothing that I would ask for a retake during the shooting! (Laughs).

You think a woman director was the right choice to handle a subject like this?
For me it is not whether a director is a male or female. It is either he knows his work, or he doesn't, and Reema Kagti knows her job! It's as simple as that! Her understanding of cinema was evident in her framing and shot taking. She had a clear picture of what she wanted and for an actor that is very comforting.

Considering Honeymoon Travels... has such a huge ensemble cast, did you ever feel you would get lost in a crowd?
Never! Each of the six couples, whether it is Shabana Azmi and Boman Irani or Ameesha Patel and Karan Khanna, has his moments. At any given time one couple is in the forefront while the others are in the background. All of us have equal footage.

Tell us about Minissha and you in Honeymoon Travels...
We are Aspi and Mini, a Parsi couple who know each other since childhood, and are now newly married. We make a perfect pair as we know and understand each other perfectly well. But whether that's really the case or not you'll find out in the film!

Is Mini the kind of person you would like to be with in real life too?
Oh, Mini is the ideal partner, but in real life I would like to be with someone who is sporty, and a more outdoor kind of person.

Anything that happened during the shooting of Honeymoon Travels... that you will always remember?

The entire shoot was like a picnic as we all bonded very well, but I cannot forget how Devraj, the AD (assistant director) had to drag us out of bed every day at 4am, and see that we got ready for the shoot. There were twelve of us and as each one of us would be in different stages of grooming, one with the hair being combed, the other with make up etc.. At that time I realized what my dog must be feeling when he was being readied for a dog show! (Laughs)

Besides your track, which other couple's track did you find interesting in Honeymoon Travels...?
I really like Kay Kay and Raima Sen's track. They had a fantastic rapport and will stay with you as a couple after the film is over.

How did you find Goa as a honeymoon destination?
Goa is my favorite holiday destination, and I head for it whenever I can. But I have seen it, and done it all. In real life I would probably head to Europe with my wife!

What are your expectations from Honeymoon Travels…..?
Huge! I have great expectations from the film! Even the music is doing very well!

Anything you learnt during the making of the film?
Not to go for a package tour for my honeymoon! It is fun on reel but I am not sure how it would work in real life!

What next after Honeymoon Travels...?
There is 1.40 Ki Last Local, a one night story, then there's Meridian….. a murder mystery, and presently I am shooting for Manorama in which I play a young man based in Rajasthan.

What is your message to the Indian audiences abroad?
Keep watching Hindi films but make an extra effort to support new-age progressive cinema!

I learn from mistakes: Abhay Deol

Updated: Wednesday, November 22, 2006

"The journey is complete as far as shooting the film is concerned,” says Abhay Deol when I ask him about the journey of 1:40 Ki Last Local, for which he’s shooting a promotional video at Kamalistan Studios. The two-film young Deol is biding his time in his trailer for the shoot to begin. “The music has been composed by Call, a band from Pakistan, which has also penned the lyrics of this track." "It’s a very situational track keeping that Neha’s and my characters happen to meet at the railway station,” he informs while director Sanjay Khanduri and choreographer Ganesh Acharya are finishing the nitty-gritties of the shoot. “It’s the character, the scope it has for me to perform as an actor, the role it plays in the storyline” that this Deol considers before doing a film. “Then comes the director, his conviction in the subject, his perspective of the plot,” adding as an afterthought, “ I don’t want to do something where I have to dance a lot.”

"Heroism isn't just beating up the bad guy" - Abhay Deol

By IndiaFM News Bureau, November 21, 2006 - 11:38 IST

Neha Dhupia and Abhay Deol recently shot for a promotional music video for Ek Chalis Ki Last Local at the Kamalistan Studios. Ek Chalis Ki Last Local is the directorial debut of Sanjay Khandoori that talks about two strangers Nilesh and Madhu played by Abhay and Neha. They both miss their 1:40 am last local train. The movie is about two strangers who end up making their wait worthwhile as they fall in love and earn some money along the way.

Well, not really some, but sufficient money. As much as 2.5 crores! And that’s exactly what the promotional video song is about. “Dhai Ghante mein Dhai Crore.” This hip-hop track has been sung by a Pakistani band called "Call – The Band" while the music has been composed by Sandesh Shandilya

Neha Dhupia had put behind her glam-doll image in Chup Chup Ke. Even in this film she plays a girl next door character. “I am clad in Salwar Kameez and that’s my look for the entire film. I think that’s the only advantage of being an actress, you get to play different roles. I was stuck in an image but that doesn’t mean that I’ll follow it. I don’t want to have an image of sex symbol or girl next door. I just want to be known as a good actress, who can play different kind of roles and that’s what I am trying to achieve. I am experimenting with different kinds of roles”, says Neha.

Abhay Deol adds, “I play an idiotic fun loving guy, who works in a call centre. I can’t reveal much about the story but yes this is about how two people come across a situation where they have to spend a night together. It may sound quite unique that the film does not talk about the characters but situations.”

Abhay looks stunning in this film. He reveals that he likes to play those roles that give him an opportunity be real. “Larger than life characters can be tiresome. We have done so much about the hero, who comes to save all; he looks great, he dances and shows his big muscles. Such roles are tiresome. I don’t mind playing heroic roles but I like to do roles where perhaps you have to face obstacles. Heroism isn’t just beating up the bad guy. Heroism could also be about mounting problems. I like the role that can push the boundaries”.

Abhay Deol's second release gets closer, 'Ahista Ahista'
Posted on 2006-05-23 08:33:50

Abhay Deol's 'Socha Na Tha' may not have done wonders at the box office but the film still had something to cheer about it's lead pair of Abhay Deol and Ayesha Takia was noticed and their performances were acclaimed. While Ayesha Takia went on to bag some awards for a best female debut and also some more films, Abhay Deol had a lull period for some time. But now he is slowly inching towards his second release, 'Ahista Ahista', that stars him opposite Soha Ali Khan. Shayan Munshi plays the third part of this love triangle. The film is produced by Anjum Rizvi, who had come up with Jimmy Shergill/Uday Chopra starrer 'Charas' a couple of years back. Shivram Nair, who has worked for TV serials like Sea Hawks and Ankahee is the film's director. 'Ahista Ahista' is slated for a July release.

Neha Dhupia and Abhay Deol Sexy Night!
Posted on 2005-10-04 22:46:55

What's going to happen when actors Neha Dhupia and Abhay Deol are seen together from 1:40 am till dawn? Nothing much if it's in full public view at the Kandivali railway station in Mumbai.
Neha admits she doesn't mind working odd hours with her co-star for 1:40 Ki Last Local that tells the story of two strangers who are unable to catch their train.

"I think it's going to be an entirely new experience because I have never even spent a single night on any platform. But in the film Abhay and I end up spending the entire night together after 1.40 am. Sometimes in real life passengers get stranded when the city is paralyzed by an auto or taxi strike. Something similar happens here too. Though the film's narrative spans just one night, we will be spending several nights at the railway platform for shooting," says the former Miss India, who currently appears as a rape victim in Siskiyan.

1:40 Ki Last Local however will bring no succour to those who have been waiting for Neha get down and dirty on screen like she did in Julie and Sheesha.

According to her: "Julie is history now and I can't repeat that magic. 1:40 Ki Last Local is a comedy like Kya Kool Hain Hum and also has elements of a suspense-thriller. I like comic roles and after Kya Kool... I have signed one more comedy film including this one."

Neha doesn't believe that the quest to find acceptance as a 'serious' actress could end her reign as Bollywood's hottest sex symbol.

"It's wrong to say that people want to see me in nothing but 'bold' films. Media is largely responsible for creating such a misconception; otherwise I know my fans expect good and meaningful cinema from me. While I don't have a problem with my sexy image and have said so again and again, that doesn't necessarily mean the audience will reject me if I do other things besides sexy stuff," she insists.

Directed by Sanjay Khandoori, 1:40 Ki Last Local film is expected to hit theatres sometimes in December this year.

HAS ABHAY DEOL S DEBUT FILM SOCHA NA THA BEEN STALLED?
Posted on 2004-05-10 04:48:57

Who is responsible for Abhay Deol s debut flick, Socha Na Tha getting stalled? Is it Ayesha Takia s airs or Sandhya Mridul s high-handed attitude? Why are the shooting dates being constantly cancelled? The Deols could not have thought of a more apt title, Socha Na Tha , for the film! Like Bobby, will Abhay also become the oldest newcomer? Sunny Deol thought of launching his cousin, Abhay Deol in film. Abhay who studied acting at the Pasadena City College in Los Angeles and is fondly known as Dimpy. Like for Bobby, a home-production Socha Na Tha was planned with Imtiaz Ali, a new director. Model Ayesha Takia s video featuring VJ Keith (Kishore Kumar s In The Daddy Mix ) became a hit and she was signed to debut opposite Abhay. The film was launched almost two years ago. We recall Ayesha mentioning that she was taking dancing lessons and was working out rigorously. Pre-production was complete and the film did get underway, but for reasons best unknown, it seems to have been stalled for a while. Why?! The reasons floating around are that the Deols wish to revive their project on Mahatma Gandhi that has been on the backburner for a while. Some of the funds are also going into building their new studio in Khandala. This may cause Abhay s debut to be stalled for a while. According to our sources, the Deols have been looking for outside producers to sign Abhay for their films. We also heard that Ayesha and her hoity-toity airs have been instrumental in stalling the film. And, the latest is that Ayesha wasn t doing the film any more.

Abhay Deol sports a new look
Kolkata, September 21, 2007

Representing the Deol family it was expected that Abhay Deol would carry forward the legacy of playing the rough-and-tough hero. But he chose to be different. With a penchant for meaty roles, Abhay hopes that people like his look in the film Manorama Six Feet Under, which hit the theatres yesterday. The actor talks to HT City:

After Ahista Ahista, Ek Chaalis Ki Last Local and Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd you emerge from the lover boy image…
It’s a complete change from what I have played. This is just the kind of person I am — serious, rough and tough, like the other Deols. I am not at all a lover boy.

You have also changed your look…
That is because the script demanded it. I am a director’s actor. I sport a moustache just to fit into the character. I think the audience will like it.

Tell us about your role?
The title has evoked curiosity but once you watch the film you will find out why the title is apt. Manorama… is a tribute to cinema noir. It has been made on similar lines. It is a dark thriller and I play an amateur detective. It is a role everyone would like to play.

So it is a suspense thriller that one hasn’t seen earlier in Bollywood?
Yes. Though there have been detective films they have always had lavish sets and song and dance sequences. I wanted to work in this film because it was very real and though there are songs we haven’t lip-synced any of them.

We also see you doing action…
Certainly. You have seen me playing a lover boy and in comedy but finally, I will be doing action. I am a fan of action films but I have never tried it because in Hindi films it is always very gimmicky. It is about fancy sequences and the hero has nothing to do.

All three Deols have cut down on their work. Are you the one who has a huge responsibility?
I am trying my best but that doesn’t mean I am in competition with my brothers or my tau, Dharmendraji. I still consider myself a newcomer. They are much more commercially successful than me. I have a long way to go before such comparisons are made.

Where do we see you next?
A lot has been happening for me this year. Both my earlier releases Honeymoon Travels… and Ek Chaalis… generated good response. I will start shooting for Anurag Kashyap’s Dev D. D stands for Devdas. Though it’s on the lines of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel it’s more of a contemporary Devdas. Then there’s another action film, Junction, where I act with both ladies from Chak De! India, Vidya Malvade and Shilpa Shukla.

In both you romance two women…
I won’t divulge much about Junction. But in Dev D I will be. I will be working opposite newcomer Mahi Gill who plays Paro.

Hardboiled Bollywood- Ek Chaalis…
By: Anurag Kashyap

Let me say it straight out..this is not a review , like my thoughts on metro were not a review..just my opinion..
Just saw ek Chaalis ki last local, got back and was curious to see how the critics have reacted to it..Guess its time for me to apologise to khalid mohammad for he saw, what I knew he would, but will not accept it or say it.. I came back prepared that he would have trashed it.. I need to be less opinionated about him..
Hardboiled bollywood..is what I would call it.. I am more curious to see how the country reacts to this film.. but hats off to courageous Sanjay khanduri for pushing the envelope, for he really pushes it far..a film set in two and a half hours, real time, the craziest characters you don’t want to cross path with, all new faces, incredible actors, doing a song with not an item girl, staying within the mood of it.. I got out and imdtly got two calls from friends who hated it, and I asked them why and they said why should someone make a film like this and I said why not, you did’nt like it you should have left and they said we wanted to know what happens in the end.. well there it is..i remembered them asking me the same question when I made Paanch, and then again when I made Black Friday, I guess I have not forgiven those people yet..
It takes courage to make a film like this in this industry of ours.. I know it first hand.. it’s the kind of film that almost never gets made,it takes courage for an actor to do a scene like what Abhay deol did in the climax.. blindfolded , tied to the bed, fearing the worst.. no actor , who is a leading actor would have agreed to do a sequence like that.. that’s where I say AD shows his maturity, some might even call it foolishness.. what I also like about him is that this his fourth release and not counting Manorama, and all with new directors, and none of them safe..
And who was that actor who played the cop, and where was he all this while..
And Amit mistry rocked..
This film reminds me of the hardboiled pulps that I adore so much.. it could have done with some editing, but nevertheless, the depths of human depravity it reaches into, the creatures of the night, with their sorry lives that they live with élan, its another world that none will want to tread into..
This is the kind of film that with little editing would be a great proposition for the west, and the GrindHouse audience, so championed by QT,.. wish somebody had the vision to take it there..
And one thing that bothered me and stung like an insult in my face, was the producer’s credit that comes after the director’s who also is the writer.. even jerry Bruckheimer is not such a megalomaniac.. who the fuck is quartet films.. this film is a warning sign to all the directors to stay away from that banner.. makes me wonder what went behind the scenes.. Do we have an active Director’s association.. nothing calls for it, it might as well have been an Alan Smithee film..
Except that beginning credit rest of it should not be ignored.. do watch it ..
And forgot to add the amateurish continuity jerks.. well..

The New Wave is coming..BHEJA FRY and MANORAMA-SIX FEET UNDER
By: Anurag Kashyap

Have been busy shifting houses, doing post production, hanuman and what not..have been avoiding the world in general..it took one brilliant movie to bring me out of my hibernation..then it was followed by another downright hilarious comedy of manners..and a third one that i have been hearing so much about but have not yet managed to see it..all of them by debutant filmmakers..all of them making you wish you were part of it..the first two i had the chance..the former i couldn’t because of lack of time and i bloody regret it..the second one i just underestimated it..so much for thinking “i know exactly what i am doing”..

MANORAMA-SIX FEET UNDER, india’s first truly original noir set in a small town rajasthan..it reminds me of TAVERNIER’S “COUP DE TORCHON“..it reminds me of jim thomson and the way he looked at america..is how NAVDEEP “NOPI” SINGH looks at his lakhot..from the way its written, sparse, moody, from the protaganist’s POV, a failed pulp novelist, now contributing to manohar kahaniyaan, wanting to be a detective played by always brilliant Abhay Deol..getting himself into a situation he can’t get out of..the entire noir thriller set in a sleepy town..where neighbours are more interested in the other ones life..where everyone wants a break from daily mundanity..where every one has all the time and everybody works for the government..extraordinary performances from Gul Panag, Sarika, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Vinay Pathak,Raima sen, Nowazuddin And Jogi..the control and the restraint from showing off and sensationalising elements, the attention to detail by this director makes you relook at what you have not been doing..it made me feel inadequate..however much i want to discuss this film i can’t because its still in post production and its not my film..but its so bloody brilliant that i am ready to put my ass on line..its one of the best i have seen..

BHEJA FRY-the entire audience in the theatre was rolling with laughter..i could not do this one..infact i didn’t do this one.. i grossly underestimated it..and i am so bloody happy that i was dead wrong..SAGAR BELLARY proves it that i am an ass..and i wonder how does the rajat kapoor gang always does it..making a film for sixty lakhs with so much talent and original songs and non stop fun..sunil doshi and rajat kapoor i guess are the only bonafide independent filmmakers we have in this country of so much that calls itself independent and is far from it..now the film, a comedy of manners.. an extra ordinary vinay pathak, who fancies himself as the true K L Saigal follow up.. a man who imagines his life is devoted to music , looking for that elusive break gets invited for a dinner by a music producer and all hell breaks loose.. based on a french comedy..this is a through the roof rollercoster..and the fun just becomes completely multiplied when Ranvir shorey enters the scene..this film and knowing what he has done in my film, i can say that Ranvir Shorey is the single most versatile actor we have and bloody brilliant and underrated.. all these familywalas who keep nominating there friends and sons and lovers and ignore this brilliant actor..i want to see how long can they ignore him.. like that dialogue from Goodfellas.. the guy will keep coming back and slam you with performances one after the other that you will have to be dead to ignore him .. uday chopra nominated for comedy for dhoomX, in his ten lives and all the money is not a split end of a hair on this man’s talent..this film is seriously ha ha and bloody celebration of low budget cinema.. it makes one feel that its not so bleak out there.. if you want to, you can, and how..

LOINS OF PUNJAB..by MANISH ACHARYA..have only been hearing about it .. all good things.. he made the film with his own money.. its about someone who sells Pork LOINS.. have yet to see it.. these are films that are finished and in various stages of post production and so many more that are not yet on floors.. many more that i don’t know about..but this is for Anish .. the new wave is definitely coming and there is hope.. we will bloody rock..and naysayers be damned

Celebrity Interview: Abhay Deol...

Wednesday, September 05, 2007
11:14 IST

The new ‘Deol’ on the block - Abhay Deol - is certainly the talk of the town with his stunning looks and his immense acting talent. He has bowled over many young hearts. In this candid one-on-one with our correspondent Roma Kapadia, he talks about his upcoming films and his personal favourites...

Is it a conscious effort that you choose different roles as most of your films see you in a different light?

Well, I do choose my scripts personally and only take up roles that the audience can relate to and which give me scope for performance.

What are your upcoming releases this year?

For this year, there's just one more release and that is ‘Manorama- Six Feet Under,’ but I am working on ‘Meredin’ which is in post-production at the moment and I have signed two other films for next year.

In all your films, you have been appreciated as a versatile actor. Which role have you enjoyed enacting and relate with the most?

Honestly, I have enjoyed every role that I played!

Is there any role in particular you would have loved to do?

Leonardo DiCaprio’s role in 'Departed'.

Which is your all-time favourite Hindi film?

Most definitely 'Chupke Chupke.'

Tell me a little about your role in your upcoming release 'Manorama – Six Feet Under' and what is your expectation from this film?

The film is excellent. It is about a man in a small town, married and living his middle class existence and yearning for more. The events that take place and change his life is the subplot.

Who is your favourite co- star ?

I should not be picking favourites, but the co-star I get along with is Soha Ali Khan.

Something that you would like telling your fans?

Thanks for all your support! I promise to continue to try and push my boundaries so that every time you see me, you go back pleased.

Roma Kapadia, India Syndicate

'I was pleasantly surprised by Abhay's performance' - Sunny Deol

By Aldina Zinobia ©2005 Bollyvista.com

Sunny Deol
No introduction is required for Sunny Deol. Sunny's production company 'Vijayata Films' is launching another Deol in the upcoming 'Socha Na Tha'. Here is an excerpt from a conversation with Sunny regarding this new venture:

What is your true prediction of Abhay Deol as an actor in the future?
Abhay is a good actor. He will do well; I see a very bright future for him. I hope he selects good films, as it is important for an actor to choose the right kind of films.

What was your reaction after watching Socha Na tha?
I loved the film. I had heard the story from Imtiaz and knew all about it and when I did see it, I really liked it.

What do you think are the plus points of the films?
The plus point of Socha Na Tha is that it is a very fresh film. It has fresh scenes. After watching the film you’ll realize that you don’t have to imitate other films or scenes to make a good film. You will have to see the film to believe and understand what I am talking about.

Does Socha Na Tha remind you of any other film?
No, it doesn’t.

What do you think of Abhay Deol’s performance in the film?
I never knew he would do so well. I was pleasantly surprised by his performance. Believe me, he is a good actor and has done a very good job in Socha Na Tha.

Socha Na Tha does not have any item number or action scenes. Do you think it will work?
Item numbers work for a different kind of entertainment, some films require it and so they have it. As far as Socha Na Tha is concerned it doesn’t require any item numbers and so it does not have any. Similar is the case with action. The subject of the film decides whether you need action scenes in the film or not. The subject of Socha Na Tha does not require any action or fight sequences and so it does not have any. People might find it surprising to see a DEOL with no action scenes but still it is a lovely film and I think it’ll definitely work.

What do you think of Ayesha Takia in the film?
Ayesha is good. Unfortunately, this is not her first release though it is the first film that she was selected for. Socha Na Tha would have introduced not only Abhay Deol but also Ayesha Takia. Ayesha is a good actress and has good screen personality.

What has been your involvement in the making of Socha Na Tha?
I have been involved since the beginning. Imtiaz and I had regular meetings and discussions on the script, scenes, music etc. through the making of Socha Na Tha.

Abhay Deol sports a big moustache in his next film 'Manorama' set in Rajasthan which he says is a tribute to noir genre of Hollywood films from the 40's

By IndiaFM News Bureau, May 17, 2007 - 09:12 IST

The humble boy Abhay Deol might have only worked with debutante directors so far but one will have to admit that all his films have been 'hatke'. He continues his legacy of working with first time filmmakers with all his upcoming films and talks about the same to IndiaFM.

What kind of response did you get for Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd? Do you feel like a superhero?
I was quite worried about how the role would shape up. It came out alright but I didn't expect people to like it so much. I was happy that they did. I was also happy about the fact that the reviews talked about me. So yea, I do feel like a superhero.

What is Ek Chalis Ki Last Local going to be like?
In some way it is a continuation of Honeymoon Travels, in a sense that it is also a comedy. My track in HTPL was over-the-top comedy but Ek Chalis Ki Last Localis a dark comedy. It's going to be one fun ride. It's a film purely for entertainment sake and nothing else. I hope it's a ride that everybody enjoys.

And isn't the film mainly shot at night?
Yes. And I guess the best part about shooting at night was that there was no Bombay traffic to deal with. So it was easier to commute. Weird incidences didn't happen really, except the Bhayandar stone throwing incident which has been spoken of many times.

You had a kissing scene with Minissha in HTPL and now you also kiss Neha Dhupia in ECKLL
It was a very technical and mechanical experience. Kissing scenes are never sensual while shooting them. You have ten people staring at you and the director is asking you to not block the light while you kiss.

Your next film Manorama Six Feet Under sounds an unusual title. What does that 'six feet under' imply?
As the title suggests, there is a character in the film called Manorama and she is Six Feet Under, which means she is dead. The film is essentially a murder mystery. It is quirky in some ways, as the title itself is somewhat on the quirky side.

I guess the best part about shooting at night was that there was no Bombay traffic to deal with
Navdeep Singh is a debutante director. Tell us about his expertise.
Navdeep graduated from School and Art College from LA. He did some work in States and finally came down to India. He's been doing ads for the past four years and he has done really well in the ad world. This is going to be his first feature film.

I had met him within the first month that he had moved in to India through another person. We hit it off immediately and since that time, I've been looking forward to work with him. It was easier to work with him because our understanding of the film is similar. We share the same views and similar sense of humour. Manorama was a good script and we were expecting it to be a good film but when we saw the film, it seems to have gone way beyond anybody's expectations.

You have almost created a record of sorts working only with debutante directors.
It just happened. Out of the six debutante directors I worked with, two of them were my friends, Shivam and Navdeep, whom I knew from before. Others I met essentially with regards to work. I read their scripts and worked with them because I liked their scripts. And I think all of them had written their own scripts. So, even though they didn't have any earlier work of theirs to show me, I gave them the benefit of doubt.

I gave the benefit of doubt to all my debutante directors.
What is your character in Manorama?
I play a character named Satyaveer in Manorama and he works in the public works department. He is kind of bored of his middle class existence which includes small town, small life, small problems etc. There is no challenge or adventure in his life. And then a particular incident takes place and he gets sucked into a conspiracy, a murder mystery that he wants to solve.

Although he works in a public works department, he has dreams of becoming a writer. He has written a book called Manorama which hasn't fared very well, so he is disheartened. He is a creative person but he is not been allowed to move into that direction.

When Manorama, someone he knows, ends up dead, he wants to solve the case and it's a challenge for him. It also gives a new meaning to his life, a chance to do something rather than living his day to day life.

The film is Navdeep's tribute to the film noir genre of Hollywood films from the 40's. It's also his tribute the movie China Town. He has drawn inspiration from those kinds of films; he has lit the scenes in that manner, shot in that manner. I don't think anybody in this country has attempted film noir, especially based in small town. He has shot Rajasthan without falling into the clichs of Rajasthan with the women, pots, colours and sand dunes.

Manorama shows Rajasthan without falling into the clichs of Rajasthan with the women, pots, colours and sand dunes.
We heard you are sporting a big moustache in the film
Yes, I have a moustache as well. That's another great thing of working in Manorama since I got to play somebody older, mature. I am always getting this sweet boy-next-door kind of roles which I wanted to get out of but no one was getting me such scripts. Even for ManoramaI wasn't the first choice. Even though Navdeep is my friend, I was the second choice because he thought people won't accept me as an older man and father of a child, who is soft spoken and I was dying to play just that. Today, Navdeep is very happy with my performance.

Even though Navdeep is my friend, I was the second choice for Manorama because he thought people won't accept me as an older man
How was it working with Raima Sen, Gul Panag, Sarika and Vinay Pathak in the film?
I have known Gul from before, so it was nice to work with her finally. Raima and I did Honeymmoon Travels but we didn't have any scenes together. She is a bit of a cartoon, very sweet girl. It was nice to meet Sarika, since I have always seen her only in films. She is a fifteen year old at heart and so good looking. I have also known Vinay for a while now. So, it was very comfortable working with them.

Tell us about the English film you are doing - Meridian
Meridian has English and Hindi, its bi-lingual. It's about different characters and how they are sort of connected karmically. Karma connects these characters even though their lives are different and these cycles come together in different stories.

And what character do you play?
I play this guy who does odd jobs and has connection with the other character in the film and how it concludes, is my track in this film. Each one's track is about the cycle coming through and the conclusion.

Venod Metra for Meridian is again a debutante director
Venod is from England originally. He is probably the most chilled out director I have worked with. He is very easy going. We are very good friends now.

Are you very close to your uncle Dharmendra?
It's good. I actually even call him dad. We lived in a joint family, so I grew up calling him dad.

FUTURE OF DEOLS LIKE THIS, SOCHA NA THA!

By Pankaj Shukla

Vijayata Films and director Raj Kumar Santoshi parted ways. The point of clash between the two was a film on the legendry freedom fighter Bhagat Singh. Both wanted to make a movie on this subject, but they differed about who should play the lead role. While Santoshi wanted Ajay Devgan, Sunny Deol was adamant for brother Bobby Deol to play the role. Later, both Santoshi and Sunny made two separate films, and both bombed at the box office. The result was catastrophic for both. Sunny had to delay all his projects and Raj Kumar Santoshi bid adieu to the production of films. 'Socha Na Tha' was the first movie to suffer on this account.

It was supposed to be the debut of its heroine Ayesha Takia, but meanwhile she has already released her two films -- 'Tarzan-The Wonder Car' and 'Dil Maange More'. Pitched against her is a new Deol, son of Dharmendra's brother Ajit Singh Deol. He has a chocolate and cute look that was seen in Bobby Deol in the latter's 'Barsaat'. But Ayesha Takia is better than Sunny and Bobby's heroines -- Amrita Singh and Twinkle Khanna, respectively. But the cache lies behind the screen. Both Sunny and Bobby had directors like Rahul Rawail and Raj Kumar Santoshi as their mentors in their debut films; Abhay is left in the hands of a new comer Imtiaz Ali, a debutant director. Let's see where 'Socha Na Tha' takes Vijayata Films, a name behind films like 'Betaab', 'Barsaat' and 'Ghayal'.

Abhay Deol plays Viren in 'Socha Na Tha' (Didn't think about this). He is from an orthodox family where values and heritage are considered vital. But Viren is a new age and happy go lucky guy and dreams like any other boy. Viren's parents want him to marry a girl of their choice. Everything has been fixed. The girl in question is Aditi (Ayesha Takia). She is charming, pretty and chirpy too. However, Viren is seeing another girl.

This surprises Aditi though she is a new age girl too. So, she supports Viren in his voyage. Viren has not opened his heart to any one about his girlfriend, who is a Catholic and her family will not agree to this relationship. Despite Aditi's cooperation, Viren's refusal to marry with her creates havoc between the two families. A game of one-upmanship is on not only among the senior members of the families but between the lovers too. Viren continues to woo Kareen, but bumps into Aditi too. However, Viren's family gives up the protest. Now what? Didn't think about this.

To review a film of a debutant has never been an easy task. Every one wishes to be star with his first film. Aftab Shivdasani wanted so and so did Fardeen Khan. The reason why I am taking names of these two is because these two actors like Abhay look very attractive and do make impacts on famines. Girls may like soft, cute and chimpoo types of heroes, but the majority wants the macho man (remember 'Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai', where daddy Rakesh Roshan brought in this angle post- interval).

With the Deol tagline come some expectations like dhishum dhishum. If films like 'Dillagi' and 'Kareeb' failed in the past it was because the people didn't want to see Deols romancing around trees. With 'Socha Na Tha', Deols want to break this myth. This is also the reason for the long delay in its release. 'Socha Na Tha' was scheduled to hit screens almost two years back. But the shock of '23rd March 1931-Shaheed' having flopped let it not release then.

'Socha Na Tha' will be remembered in the film history for two things. First, a Deol in a romantic fun film, and second, as a film where expectations were nil. It did unite all the Deols for the first time in front of a lens man. Abhay Deol needs to learn a lot before he could think of a great career; the better option will be to have a break with his cousins in a second lead. He has failed as a solo hero. This proves that blue blood alone can never make a star. He is not fit for comedy scenes too. He fails in emoting in intimate scenes. Ayesha Takia on the other hand looks sensuous and bubbly.

But if this film fails too, it will be a hat trick of flops for an actress who deserves better films than she has been doing. Ayesha Julka, Suresh Oberoi and Apoorv Jha support the film well, but the final impact is missing somewhere. For a film like this, the music must be rocking, but Sandesh Shandilya on the contrary has preferred to be melodious and has failed to come out with one solid hit. At box office, the film has not much to deliver. It will also face tough competition with the current Indo-Pak cricket series

Abhay Deol: ‘The industry is more sex-starved than the audiences…
14.03.2005
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is no gene for the human spirit’ , but in the gloriously fast-paced world of cinema, genetics matters. And while there is no perfect gene-mix, when gorgeous looks and acting ability surge through your bloodstream, you belong to the starry species, whether you ask for it or not. Such is Abhay Deol, the newest young Deol on celluloid, who has inherited the family legacy of charm, intelligence and spontaneous talent. Though he doesn’t have Sunny bhaiyya’s bulging biceps or Bobby’s endearing smile, what he does have are his two big Bs standing high and tall behind him, while he paddles his way into tinseltown.

But when you’re born with a D-studded spoon (D for diamond, we mean), there’s a price you need to pay. The young Deol is quick to react with, “There is a flip side to everything. People claim that it’s going to be a cakewalk for me, because my brothers have spread out a red carpet for me to walk on, but it’s really not that easy. Yes, there are critics who have liked my work, and there are those who have formed biases. In this place, everyone has to struggle to get anywhere, irrespective of genes. However, if you aren’t good enough, the struggle is tougher.”
Dharmendra, Sunny, Bobby and now Abhay...the fourth Deol. Comparisons are a-plenty; aren’t they frustrating? “Everyone says I look like Bobby; some even say I look like Dad (as Abhay calls Dharam ji ), and maybe I do. Otherwise, I’m very much my own person. My brothers are going to town saying that I argue a lot; that’s because I have a strong mind of my own. I don’t like being compared constantly – but as this is family we are talking about, I know I can’t escape that! After all, we can’t expect an ideal world - right?” Abhay says.

All the Deols are macho action men who started as soft, romantic heroes. Is Abhay following the ‘romantic-to-rugged’ route? He spontaneously clears the air: “I did ‘Socha Na Tha’ because I really liked the story. I auditioned for various other projects, but none of them excited me as much. Even if this was an action film, I would have done it. I didn’t want a film that would showcase my dancing abilities, or my action power, or my dramatics on-screen. When that happens, you come in with a particular tag, and I sure didn’t want that!”
His bada bhaiyya (Sunny) believes that ‘men don’t dance’. How does Abhay rate himself as a dancer? Laughing, he says, “I know dance and music are an integral part of our cinema. But you can have great dance sequences in the film and yet the film might be turned down by the audiences. I have no inhibitions, dancing; I like shaking a leg when I go partying with my friends. But frankly, I’m not so good at choreographed dancing. It’s a bit of a drawback. I’ll work at it. Actually, ‘dance’ at it!”

In a time where two things are guaranteed to sell – SRK and sex - what makes ‘Socha Na Tha’ click with the audience? With knowing grin Abhay says, “Hey, I know who said that: Neha Dhupia. And everyone made such a big deal out of it. I think SRK works, as he’s damn good at what he does and knows the pulse of the people. And about sex flicks - our society has been conservative and male-dominated for ages and, with women willing to go that far to prove themselves, there’s a sudden outburst. In that sense, our society is in stages of puberty, where they want to know all they can about sex; hence, their reactions are also as vociferous. I also think that people aren’t so sex-starved; the industry is more sex-starved than the audiences!”
The younger breed of star-couples is more vocal about relationships, leaving behind the ‘hide n seek’ mystique preferred by the older generation. There have been media reports about Abhay’s lady love, too. He insists, “Privacy is really important. When your personal life starts becoming private, it starts eating into your space. When your family, friends and the media start speculating on a relationship, there’s too much pressure on the couple. So when anyone asks me about my love life I simply say ‘No comment’.”

Well, this Deol lad seems to be learning the tricks of the trade very quickly. He nattily responds, “I’m born into it, remember? Media can be your best friend and your worst enemy. You take some from it, you give some to it.”

Full marks to the older Deols. Abhay has learned his first lessons in stardom very well!

SHARING A RAPPORT Soha Ali Khan and Abhay Deol strike a pose

Two very different people, from similar backgrounds. Genealogy aside, Abhay Deol and Soha Ali Khan are working hard to break away from any expectations and image they might have to live up to. As they promote their new movie Ahista Ahista together, the duo show that they have a great off-screen camaraderie, as they squash rumours of an ongoing romance and fights between them. Abhay Deol clearly wants to play the wicked interviewer to Soha Ali Khan as Renuka Vijay Kumar listens in.

Abhay Deol: (grabbing the mike) So I'm doing the interview for Ahista, Ahista. Tell me Soha, how was it...

Soha Ali Khan: Stop being an actor and stop interviewing me!

Abhay: I have to say, Soha Ali Khan was very hard to work with and she played...

Soha: Are you asking me questions or are you interviewing yourself?

Abhay: Well, you're answering the questions badly . Say something nice.

Soha: Ok. Abhay Deol is a very good actor and Ahista Ahista is his best film.

Abhay: I'll take back what I said earlier... Soha Ali Khan is a very natural actor and. what else should I say? Don't you have family here?

Soha: I do. And now I have to go and meet them because they know I am here!

Abhay: Ha ha ha. Who exactly is here?

Soha: My father's sisters are here and some of their children and some of their children's children.

Abhay: Do they own half the city?

Soha: No, they own a portion of the city.

Abhay: Just a portion? Aww...

Soha: Yes, but they have a lovely house here.

Abhay: I believe the mansion is massive. Will they adopt me?

Soha: I know, you are into houses at the moment. But no, they won't (adopt you).

Abhay: Are you looking forward to travelling the country to promote the film?

Soha: Yes, I am looking forward to promoting this film because it's...

Abhay: (cutting her off) I didn't ask why... (more laughter ha ha ha )

Soha: So this is yes or no interview?

Abhay: Yes, it is. What would you have to say to the viewers about the film? What is it about?

Soha: It's about this boy who lives in old Delhi and is a very interesting character. Who works as a witness for marriages and still can't afford a new sweater...

Abhay: Yeah, that's true... but that's the stylist's fault.

Soha: So this guy has a lot of spunk and energy and then this girl, from a very different background comes into his life.

Abhay: Now I will talk about your character. So he sees this girl and approaches her and she is a very sweet girl who has run away from home. He kind of takes it upon himself to help her out and essentially it's about the relationship they share and where it leads him and her.

(On meeting each other)

Abhay: I met Soha at the Marriott through a common friend called Kunal Kapoor. That's how we met remember?

Soha: Yes, that's right.

Abhay: Kunal's her co-actor from Rang De Basanti and after that, we hit it off very well and met a few times before we stated the movie. I think it was a natural process. It was just so easy to get along with her because she's funny.

Soha: And you're funny looking.

Abhay: Yeah. But then this film came up for which Shivam (Shivam Nair, director of the movie) met her and liked her. And then he decided not to let our friendship develop any closer because we are supposed to play strangers in the film.

Soha: In fact, before we started shooting the film, he told me to stay away from Abhay so that we looked like we were uncomfortable with each other.

Abhay: It's all about acting... or not acting! Then of course, once we started making the film, we became better friends. Now I think we should do a comedy together. Don't you think Soha?

Soha: I think so. I would like to do a comedy, like a dark, black comedy!

Soha: I'm not choosing films on the basis of commercial value. I just read the scripts and see if I like it. Some of them tend to be commercial. Even my next film with Sudhir Mishra, is a sensible film even though it certainly is meant to be a commercial film. It's not high brow in any way. I'm also doing a film with Aparna Sen. They are not mainstream filmmakers, but are very good filmmakers. They idea is to do good films.

Abhay: I want to do films that are commercially successful. But I don't define films as commercial or non-commercial I just define them as good or bad. I've finished Ahista Ahista , which according to me is a commercial film. But some people who saw it thought it was sensible cinema. Strangely enough both our backgrounds helped us so much to get along in many ways. Even our career graphs are very similar.

Soha: I think it really is an asset to have people in the industry in your family because they have your interests in mind.

They know a good script from a bad script. They know who are the right people to work with. So it's very important to use that. But apart from that, I don think either of us have benefited in any tangible way from contacts.

Abhay: At the end of the day, it doesn't matter who you are related to. It only matters whether you can deliver the goods.

Her parents and my parents are very similar in the way that they think the only way you can survive out there is if you can learn on your own.

Soha: And my parent's wouldn't mind me saying this, but they don't want me to work in films. Especially my father. He is not at all a film person. He has never seen a Hindi film in his life and never will. But that's who he is.

Abhay: He's seen your films right?

Soha: No. He says, `I don't have three hours to watch your film.'

(On their link up as a publicity gimmick)

Soha: We are not really reacting to it or taking it seriously. You kind of get used to reading stuff about yourself, especially link ups.

Brand in Progress

Suruchi Mazumdar
Posted online: Wednesday, October 24, 2007 at 0000 hrs IST

IN real life, Abhay Deol is close to how he mostly appears onscreen—the boy next door, the one who earnestly requests our lens man not to take any top shots since “my hair does not look good”. But this other Deol has done some shrewd thinking in Bollywood, signing unconventional films — and the experiments have paid off.
His two recent releases, Ek Chalis Ki Last Local and Manorama Six Feet Under, were hugely appreciated for the treatment as well as his performance. He has now been roped in for Anurag Kashyap’s movie on a contemporary Devdas, Dev.D, and Dibakar Banerjee’s Oye Lucky Lucky Oye, both from UTV’s stable, and newcomer Atul Sabarwal’s Junction.
As we see it, Deol can’t afford to go wrong. “I have been accepted in unconventional movies. Ek Chalis... and Manorama... would have fared better at the box office had they been promoted properly,” he says. “With UTV producing my next two films, I hope they will be more successful.”
Right now, Deol is trying to be more saleable. “The name Devdas alone will sell Dev.D. It was originally my idea to make a contemporary Devdas. Anurag liked it and wrote the screenplay,” he says.
Given a chance, Dharmendra’s nephew would love to rattle endlessly about his ‘Tayaji’, but he never denies the differences. Right from his first film, 2005’s sweet story Socha Na Tha, Deol has signed movies that are remarkably different from those preferred by action-hero cousins Sunny and Bobby. “Many people wrote me off saying I wasn’t as handsome or dashing as my brothers,” he says. “After Socha, I was only offered low-budget, stereotypical, masala movies. I thought I’d rather experiment with different genres and create my own brand.”
When it comes to declaring his choice, he is more than eloquent. “Given a choice, I wouldn’t watch predictable movies like a Laaga Chunari Mein Daag or a Tara Rum Pum. I’d rather watch a Bheja Fry or a Johnny Gaddaar,” he says.
Though his honesty is impressive, he chooses to tread the beaten track where his newer films are concerned. “Frankly, I haven’t been given any brief by my director on how much I can speak about Oye Lucky. For Dev.D, I can’t reveal more than what I have said,” he says. “The pre-production of Dev.D has just begun and the shooting will start in February.”

Abhay Deol plays an author and a detective in "Manorama Six Feet Under"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With his debut film Socha Na Tha or with Ahista Ahista, Abhay Deol couldn't make a mark as an actor. But, in his recent release Honey Moon Travels Private Limited, he received appreciation for his performance.

He chooses his roles obviously guided by factors other than box office potential. Abhay has signed a film which is getting attention because of its intriguing title - Manorama Six Feet Under. Directed by adman Navdeep Singh, this film is a murder mystery.

Says Abhay about his role in the film, "I play a PWD engineer named Satya Veer (S.V.) from a small town, who has a passion for writing." S.V. writes a detective novel called `Manorama' but it sinks. His dreams are shattered. But one day a woman called Manorama (played by Sarika) comes up to him and praises his novel. S.V. is taken aback. Manorama is the wife of a politically strong person. She suspects that her husband is having an affair with someone so she comes to S.V. and says she wants him to find out if it is true _ the way the detective does in the novel. Taking up this job lands up S.V. in complicated situations.

Not first choice

The film was shot in 48 days in Rajasthan. Abhay admits that though he wanted to work with Navdeep whom he had known as a friend for long, he was not the first choice for the role. "Shemaroo came to me with this offer, but when Navdeep got to know that Shemaroo had signed me for it, he wasn't very comfortable. But as we both are friends, Navdeep didn't have much hassle either."

Says Abhay, "At 31, I don't want to do conventional roles. I am looking for offbeat scripts to work on. I know it is a difficult choice that may leave me with few options, but I can't work in films I don't relate to." For now he has three films in his kitty. Junction, Dev D and Oye Lucky Oye Oye. Tight-lipped about their stories for the time being, Abhay just says that these films have different scripts and belong to different genres, and he decided to work in them to explore his range.

Exercise to remain active - Abhay Deol

Inspired by Sunny and Bobby bhaiyya, cousin Abhay Deol followed them to TinselTown. Having completed his acting course in Los Angeles Abhay makes his debut in the film Socha Na Tha. Unravelling his food and fitness secrets to ShaadiTimes he says, "the essential ingredient to remain fit and healthy is to exercise regularly and eat home cooked food".

No healthy diets
Abhay loves delicious food; he can munch on all sorts of food because he says he just cannot understand 'healthy diet'. When asked about his regular diet he simply says, a glass of uncooked lauki juice at 9.00 in the morning because it is very high in alkaline, 6 egg whites scrambled and a cup of coffee. Abhay is not fanatic about food, so he tries out everything. For him lunch and dinner is always home cooked food. He strictly has rice or chapati, but never both together, some sabji, any type of dal, yellow, moong or hari dal. While shooting he avoids set ka khana because the food is usually oily and spicy.

As sweet as bitter sweet
Abhay loves talking about sweets and he has an endless list. "Tiramisu is my favourite, it is rich with coffee. I also like kaaju katri, gulab jamun, sweet samosas of Hare Krishna temple, the French pastries with fresh cream, muffins."

Inspired by Sunny Bhaiyya
"When I was 14 or 15 years old, Sunny bhaiyya would wake me and Bobby early in the morning to exercise. We use to go to the gym together when I was young, now I have my own gym. Under his guidance we learned many important aspects of good health. He always advised us to exercise to remain active throughout the day and to always eat home cooked food."

Eating out is a treat
Abiding by the family rules he prefers home cooked food and rarely eats out. "I just snack out. In India continental food is a treat because I rarely eat out and at home its always Indian food. I like Thai, Chinese cuisine. And when I am abroad Indian food is a treat."

Tuna pasta is my speciality
Having been educated abroad he learnt to cook for pure survival. "I can cook some vegetables and tuna pasta, the latter being my speciality."

Don't abuse your body
Is it in the family, in the genes, that Abhay has a wonderful toned up body? "No, it's all because I exercise regularly. I am not an extremist health freak, I don't abuse my body but I believe in staying fit, so I have to exercise. And when you work out, you tend to get addicted to it and need it everyday. I basically do yoga and martial arts. I go to the gym and do only heavy weights. I don't do cardio at the gym because yoga and martial arts takes care of it."

Understand food
One should basically understand the acidic and alkaline food. Acidic foods like vinegar, Chinese, tamarind harms you, specially your joints, you should avoid it. Today you may enjoy eating it, but when you get old around 60 or 70 you will have problems. So watch what you eat and work out regularly.

Staying healthy shows it all
Abhay does not need that extra care or extra make-up to look good on-screen or off-screen because he believes that staying healthy shows it all. He washes his face at least twice a day and uses only aloe vera for his skin.

On a date with Angelina Jolie
Like most youngsters of today, Abhay admits that he would love to go on a date with Angelina Jolie. Fly her down to his private island on the Mediterranean sea or Thailand and arrange for a romantic lunch or dinner in a restaurant on a table facing the beach with candles lit all around.

'Sunny bhaiyya loves soft toys!'

March 02, 2005

Abhay Deol is the newest of the Deol clan to hit Bollywood, cousin to Dharmendra's sons Sunny and Bobby. This Friday, he makes his debut opposite Taarzan girl Ayesha Takia in Imitiaz Ali's Socha Na Tha.

The actor talks about his upcoming film, future plans, and family.

"I didn't enter acting because of my cousins. In school, I was involved with theatre. Acting was always an option at the back of my mind, but not something I was sure of. At 18, I decided to take the plunge. It took me 10 years because I didn't want to leave my education to get into films. This meant that I would do my education, get into theatre, build my self-confidence and understand the art before acting in a movie.

I had four professions in mind – acting, painting, philosophy and journalism. I chose acting.

Socha Na Tha is a light, romantic film. It deals with two people and the situations they get into.
I play Viren Oberoi, who always creates misunderstandings. He always gets into trouble. But I don't resemble the character I play, at least not in the situations he gets into!

I am not worried about making a debut with a first-time director at all. I would probably have been more worried about acting with an established director. Established people behave in set ways. The vigour to assert their individuality and originality is the strongest in the beginning.

There is no safe ground in Bollywood. Both established directors and new directors could make a flop film. The only way to be safe is to read the script and decide for yourself.
This is a good script written by director Imtiaz Ali himself. He seems intelligent and thinks like me. So I'll take the chance.

When Ayesha [Takia] started this film, it was her first film too. She has done a very good job. She is perfectly suited for the Aditi role, and she's very pretty. I hope she makes the right career decisions because she's very talented.

Apoorva Jha is also a new girl and very talented. She plays Karen.

My first shot in the film was in a scene at [Mumbai's] Sophia College with Raj Zutshi. I was nervous because it was a funny scene, and had to come out right. I'm caught by Raj meeting Ayesha, and he interprets it as something else.

People don't expect me to have struggled because they think I am from the film industry. But I did my own thing before acting -- I used to do storyboards, assisted an editor for a movie, made and sold T-shirts!

I've worked in theatre. I was supposed to do two other films before this one started. But they did not take off. It has been a bit of a struggle, which is very good as it is part of the growing process. But I firmly believe that my real struggle will start now, after the movie releases.

I like movies that aren't over the top. I like cinema that has the 'real' element. If it has to be larger than life, then it has to be science fiction! It has to then have that one really extreme, really entertaining, magical element.

I like Iranian cinema a lot, because they make something magical out of the simplest subjects.

Hindi cinema is not working now because people who make the films have somehow lost the connection with the people. They put so much money into films and hire expensive actors. But what they are churning out is not good. Films that sell sex and violence are a waste!

My favourite movies are Hrishikesh Mukherjee's Chupke Chupke, Mehboob Khan's Mother India and Stanley Kubrick's Dr Strangelove.

I don't have any set ideas on the type of films I would like to do. I just want to be what the script requires me to be. I want to do good and meaningful work. At the end of the day, I should be satisfied.

Sunny bhaiyya is the older, protective one. The age difference between him and me is 17 years. He's the mature one, while Bobby is bratty. He has bullied me a lot! We would make excuses for each other to go out at night.

I am close to both of them. Bobby and I are closer in age, so there is a less of a generation gap. But I am equally close to bhaiyya. There are times when I would approach bhaiyya and not Bobby, and vice versa.

We meet everyday for lunch, at least when not busy with shooting. We watch movies and enjoy sports together. Bobby likes cricket, and I like to swim.

Bhaiyya is very shy and a perfect gentleman, but also family oriented and very supportive. He loves soft toys and is afraid of injections!"

ABHAY DESPERATE TO WORK WITH BROTHERS

By S Kumar - Eye TV India Bureau

Tete-a-Tete

As the new member of Deol family didn't get much appreciation from his debut movie 'Socha Na Tha' opposite Ayesha Takia, however this junior Deol doesn't want to sit at home. Yes, we are talking about Abhay Deol. Abhay, a graduate from Otis Parson's School of Fine Arts and Design, is nowadays busy in director Shivam Nair's forthcoming movie 'Ahista Ahista' starring Soha Ali Khan, Shyan Munshi besides himself. Smashits caught the upcoming star of the Deol Family on the sets of 'Ahista Ahista' at Red Fort in Delhi, where the actress Soha Ali was present with her mother, actress Sharmila Tagore besides others. Our s team chatted with the star.

Excerpts of our chat with him-:

What is 'Aahistey Aahistey' all about?

The story revolves around a businessman who works in Chandni Chowk (Old Delhi). The story is based on various incidents which happen in his life.

What's your character role?

I am playing the role of that businessman.

What's your experience while shooting in Delhi?

Shooting in Delhi is great. The only problem is the cold weather in which we have to shoot. In Mumbai, the weather is moderate. Here, the temperature is very low.

Where are you going to shoot next?

We shall be going to Nainital from here for the shoot.

Any particular role you would like to play in future?

I am ready to do any type of role. If I like any script I can play any role.

When could we watch you with your brothers?

I am also very desperate to work with my brothers. I hope the people could watch all of us together soon.

How do you keep yourself fit?

I go to gym everyday and jog. I also drink a lot of water and eat healthy food. Besides this, I sleep a lot.

Any message for your fans?

I want the people to watch my films and give the same love as they have given to my other family members.

Yana & I are bad friends:Abhay
25 Feb 2008, 0000 hrs IST, Mohini Mehrotra ,TNN

He may shrink away from ‘kutte mein tera khoon pee jaaonga’ kind of roles but there is no getting away from family connections. Abhay Deol got a taste of it when he was mobbed by a few elderly people while shooting in Delhi. The reason for this unique mobbing:

They wanted to meet Dharmendra’s nephew. But Abhay, who is shooting in the city for his film Oh Lucky, loved the whole experience. “The people here are very warm, much more than they are in Mumbai. And given the fact that I am from the Deol family, I get this kind of reaction here always,” he says.

Moving on to things more controversial, what is his take on the alleged link-up with Yana Gupta? “We are ‘bad friends’. If I say we are good friends, invariably everyone will jump the gun and say that they know what the term means. So I would prefer to say we are ‘bad friends’. You can interpret it the way you see fit but the truth is that I want to be single for a while.”

That said, he attacks the plate of samosas in front of him. A pointed look at it gets this reaction, “It is one of those rare days when I am indulging myself. Usually, it is steamed veggies and vegetable juice for me. I was just craving for a samosa yesterday and somebody got them for me. But I do take care of my physique. I have four packs and I don’t plan to go in for six. I am posing topless in my movie. Actually, Paresh Rawal and I are doing a Govinda and Salman.”

He is going shirtless but don’t expect him to dance around trees. “I have four movies lined up this year and none of them are regular Bollywood films. Fortunately, I haven’t got those kind of offers and I am grateful for that. I would never dance for money. You wouldn’t see me dancing in weddings either. I would only do the matka-jhatka roles when I stop getting work and I am left with no choice,” he laughs.

August 20, 2008 (Sawf News) - The promotional video shoot of UTV's Dibaker Banerjee directed Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye took place a few days back at Film City, in Sankraman studio. It's Dibaker's second film after Khosla Ka Ghosla. The entire cast of the film - Abhay Deol, Neetu Chandra, Paresh Rawal and Archana Puran Singh were shooting for the video which is also the title track of the song, Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye.
The set was designed in to a cool garage, which had every thing in it right from a new flashing car to beer bottles to antique furniture to a Christmas tree etc. the garage looked like a cool den of a hero.

Neetu Chandra looked stunning in a little white dress, Paresh Rawal looked like a typical Delhiet suited in formals ditto was Archana Puransingh, she looked like a typical wana be Punjabi lady which exactly is her character in the film, dressed in a salwar kameez, a cardigan and a cap on top of it. Abhay Deol looked charming as usual with his dimpled smile dressed in a casual jeans and a formal shirt with a blazer adding to the look.

The video basically revolved around Abhay Deol, who plays the title character called Lucky in the film; he was surrounded by all these characters who were singing the song for him. The choreographers left the artists do the steps in their own style instead of following verbatim, they were asked to just have fun in which Archana Puran Singh walked away with the cake, she was heard getting compliments from the video director for exuding great energy level and living up to the fun element of the song, so did Paresh Rawal and Neetu.

The shooting continued till late evening.

Et tu, Abhay Deol?
by Divya Nair

K L Saigal did it. Dilip Kumar followed suit. Shah Rukh Khan couldn’t resist the role and now it’s Abhay Deol playing the same character. After Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas, one would have thought that perhaps the filmmakers would let some originality creep and leave the 1917 novel at peace. But what don you know. This time however, there is going to be a slight change. Instead of the dhoti-clad Devdas, it’s going to be a modernized Dev D. Anurag Kashyap will direct the film.

The role has been done to death. Despite that, there is something about the story that tickles the makers’ brains. Abhay who came up with the concept of making a modern Devdas doesn’t think it’s anything new though. He says, “The concept was mine. I gave it a different treatment. Convey it in 20 pages or two, essentially after the first few pages, you get to know the what, why, who, when of the story. It is nothgin new. Baz Luhrmann did with Romeo-Juliet. I did it with Devdas.”

Often films on historical topics don’t last for long as they manage to get embroiled in controversies. Look at Jodhaa Akbar, for instance. Nevertheless, it doesn’t bother Abhay. “I think Jodhaa Akbar got into a mess because of its historical facts. Devdas is not a historical piece. Anyway, people who want to make controversies will do so for whatever reasons they want to. I don’t think Devdas has such issues. We can’t cash in on it either,” smiles Abhay. By the way, according to the grapevine, even Sudhir Mishra intends to make a film on the same lines. We wonder if it’s going to be another case of a horde of Bhagat Singh films being released at around the same time. That would make for some good teatime gossip now.

‘I have used Devdas as an adjective’
PiyasreeDasgupta

Getting KJo to make a movie without SRK would probably be easier than stripping the cryptic, stylized rhetoric off filmmaker Anurag Kashyap.
So, in between party plans, random autographs and long phone calls post a book launch at the Starmark, South City Mall, Talk tried catching up with the metaphors yet to hit the theatres
What is your latest film Dev.D about?
It’s a serious film about relationships. This time it’s a musical with 15-16 songs with music scored by Amit Trivedi (of Aamir fame). The film is ready and we are targeting a late October-November release.

What has Devdas to do with it?
I have tried exploring relationships through the phenomenon that is Devdas. In fact, I have tried using Devdas as an adjective, not as a work of literature or a cinema.

Why did you choose Devdas as a medium to explore relationships?
Devdas, romance and relationships are deeply entwined in the Indian psyche. Devdas is considered a quintessence of love, so it was a natural choice.

Who plays the lead in your film?
Abhay Deol plays the title role and the other leads are Mahi Gill and Kalki Kockli.

And what made you cast Abhay Deol...
Basically, the idea of Dev.D came from Abhay. We have know each other for a long time, over 12 years now...

Are you still looking at a niche film-educated audience?
(Laughs) No at all. Why do you think I mentioned 15 songs?

Have you been blogging also?
Yes, sporadically. But I think it has become a sort of fad with people now. I wouldn’t say they are not earnest to the art of blogging, but the whole thing has become a little strange now.

The Journeyman, Abhay Deol

Saturday, November 22, 2008

Abhay Deol has always taken the road less travelled: From moving out of a sprawling bungalow into a one-bedroom apartment, to taking a risk with every new film. Defying the fact that he is the youngest in a family that has given the industry three ‘macho’ heroes, Abhay is out to carve a niche for himself

When Socha Na Tha was in production, life was a struggle for Abhay Deol. “It was a period of severe angst, frustration, anger, and every other negative emotion possible,” he says, talking about the three-year period.

Four years and five films later, the struggle continues. “At that time it was about getting the film released, then the struggle was to get more films; now it’s about being able to pick the good ones and ensure they reach a wide audience,” says Abhay.

Life could have been very different for the youngest Deol. Born to Ajit Singh, the younger brother of veteran superstar Dharmendra, Abhay grew up in a family of cinematic achievers.

His cousins, Sunny and Bobby, had both successfully made their mark on the industry as actors, and Abhay’s entry — although not keenly anticipated — was looked forward to with some interest by the film fraternity.

With an uncle and two elder brothers, who were very much a part of the typical ‘Bollywood’ set-up, all Abhay had to do was follow in their footsteps. Instead, he chose to start his career with an off-beat romantic film made by first-time director, Imtiaz Ali, and follow it up with some more innovative films.

“Everytime I start a movie, I get warnings on how the film will not work. And when they don’t, I get the ‘I-told-you-so’ line. But I don’t care! I don’t have to follow the route others follow. I have my own goals,” says Abhay.

Socha Na Tha was a disaster at the box office. Although Abhay received some encouraging reviews for his acting skills, he was criticised for his hairstyle and appearance, and brushed off as a ‘weak’ Deol. Many predicted the end was near.

When Ahista Ahista released, the critics were unanimous in their acceptance of Abhay as an actor who was ‘here to stay’. In the meantime, Socha Na Tha made its debut on the small screen and endeared itself to an audience who never gave the film a shot in cinemas.

Imtiaz Ali’s fresh screenplay and Abhay’s ‘confused young boy’ act made the film a hit on TV. “Even when it seemed like Socha Na Tha was taking forever to be completed, there were offers to do other big banner films, which I refused. I was very clear that I wanted Socha Na Tha to be my first release. I had full trust in Imtiaz’s ability.”

A few months later, Abhay got his first hit with Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd. The tide was turning. With people having only good things to say about him, it was a time to capitalise and sign some big films.

Abhay did exactly the opposite. He continued acting with first-time directors who had a different story to tell. So if Ek Chaalis Ki Last Local was a one-night tale about what transpires after a man misses the last train back home, Manorama Six Feet Under was about a struggling detective novelist sucked into a real-life detective drama.

Ek Chaalis… was an average grosser, while Manorama was a commercial failure.

However, like in other Abhay Deol films, there was never any paucity of praise. The writing was clear — Abhay Deol’s films may not set the cash registers ringing, but they were good films.

“People in the industry always talk of commerce. I get a lot of offers from big producers to do three-hero films. Most of these are ‘proposals’ — money-making initiatives — and usually lifted from a Hollywood comedy, like Three Men And A Baby. Even I want my films to make money, but that can’t be the only driving factor na,” says Abhay, quick to point out that he did the multi-starrer Honeymoon Travels… because he had a substantial role to play.

“I have to bring something to every film I do. It’s not like I’m looking to hog the limelight or anything. In fact, I believe a film needs a lot of people to come together, for it to work. There are many at play — cinematographers, editors, writers — that make the final product possible. As an actor, I enter the set-up merely as a tool to convey a story to an audience. I believe that we are all part of a jigsaw puzzle, who need to merge for it to be completed,” says Abhay whose next film, Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! is his first by a director who has made a film before.

“It is comforting to know that director Dibakar Banerjee has delivered a hit before. But more importantly the film, Khosla Ka Ghosla, was a film to be proud of,” says Abhay who has Anurag ‘No Smoking’ Kashyap’s Dev. D to follow. He is happy that he needn’t worry, for a change, about marketing these films. “This is the first time that a big production house — UTV Spotboy Films — is backing the project. I can relax knowing that they will give the films a good release. My career depends on their performance. The launch of my production company, Forbidden Films, depends on it.”

Ask him if the banner’s name was an obvious one, and he grins, “What to do now? All my films have charted unexplored territory. I want to continue that trend with my banner too. As an actor, my work is confined to approving a story, coming to the sets on time, delivering what my director wants, and then leaving it to the marketing guys to take over. However, you need a good product to market, and as a producer, I’ll look to get just that — a good product.”

As with his films, Abhay continues to break tradition, even at home. Having spent his childhood in the family’s sprawling Juhu bungalow, with six cousins and other family members, Abhay moved out a few years ago. “Living alone in Los Angeles — where I did a course in Theatre and Fine Arts — got me used to an independent lifestyle.

When I returned, all my family would have wanted was for me to live with them, but I told them I wanted to move out. They were like, ‘It’s okay to live in a big family you know, it’s part of our culture’. But eventually they were at peace with my decision and happy that I would be living in the same locality. The bungalow is just a few steps away and I drop in every now and then.”

Abhay admits that his choice of films did worry his family, initially. “That’s just because they were scared. They all know the inner workings of the industry. Every time I did something that was out-of-the-box, they were apprehensive.”

But there’s one person Abhay has always found an ally in — whether it is to do with his choice of films or the way he leads his life — his uncle, Dharmendra. “Believe it or not, he is my biggest support. Every time he sees my films, he is ecstatic. He then tells the others in the family: ‘Leave the boy alone, he knows what he’s doing’. Nothing is more encouraging than that,” he says happily.

I want to do a film with uncle Dharmendra: Abhay Deol

New Delhi, Nov 24, 2008.

Abhay Deol hopes that one day he will get to share screen space with his uncle, veteran actor Dharmendra, and cousins Sunny and Bobby Deol.

"I really want to do a film with my uncle and my cousins. I'm sure it will be really interesting to work with them," Abhay told reporters.

"I am scared to work with my uncle and Sunny Bhaiya (Sunny Deol) because I don't know if I will be able to play anybody else around them apart from my usual self. I feel acting with Bobby will be much easier since we are closer in age," he added.

Abhay said that uncle Dharmendra has been very supportive of his decisions and always appreciated him for his performances and selection of roles.

"My cousins and my uncle have been iconic heroes in the industry and I don't think I'm anywhere close to that, but I'm happy that they like my work. They are my elders and it's natural for me to look up to them," Abhay said.

Abhay made his debut in 2005 with "Socha Na Tha", a home production. He then went on to prove his acting prowess with films like "Ahista Ahista", "Manorama Six Feet Under", "Ek Chalis Ki Last Local" and "Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd".

After giving critically acclaimed performances in the past, he is now ready and upbeat about his forthcoming film, "Oye Lucky!Lucky Oye!" directed by Dibakar Banerjee of "Khosla Ka Ghosla" fame.

"The film is about a thief. He is a man who wants to live a luxurious life. But along with the ambition that he has to become somebody, move up the social ladder and have a huge amount of money, he also wants other things like respectability, care," said the actor who plays the protagonist in the film.

"Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!" also stars Paresh Rawal in a triple role and actress Neetu Chandra in the lead.

The film is scheduled to hit the screens Nov 28.

Abhay, who is working with Paresh Rawal for the first time, said he was initially "nervous" at sharing the same platform with such a senior actor.

"It was really good working with Paresh Rawal. I was nervous at first because he is such a big star and I love his performances, but the initial nervousness went away once I got to know him. He is a very simple and hardworking man.

"While working with him, my performance also got better, because when you work with a great actor, your timing also falls in place. I was glad that I got an opportunity like this,"
Abhay said.

The actor who has a penchant for unusual scripts and different subjects had only worked with debutant directors before "Oye Lucky...".

However, he maintains that it was not a "conscious decision" to work only with the new crop of filmmakers.

"I knew that it might be a risk working with new directors and I didn't want to do that. But it just worked out this way. There was no conscious decision behind it," Abhay said.

"I just read the scripts and I really liked them, and it just happened that all of them had a debut director attached to them," he added.

Abhay said he is interested in producing a film next year.

“I won’t go for a girl in B’wood”

Saturday, November 22, 2008

Abhay Deol’s underplayed acting style has been noticed in films like "Honeymoon Travels", "Ahista Ahista", "Ek Challis Ki Last Local" and "Manorama Six Feet Under". Now he’s got "Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye"! coming up. In a chat with Masala! Abhay doesn’t mince words

Do you think Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! will be that one big hit that has been eluding you so far?

"Honey Moon Travels" and "Ek Challis..." were moderate hits. "Manorama Six Feet Under" didn’t work because of bad show timings and bad marketing. That way I am very upbeat about "Oye Lucky" because it is a UTV movie and they don’t compromise on any aspect.

Did you have to work on your role in Oye...?

I worked on the accent because the attitude and accent in a slum in Delhi is different from Mumbai.

Why are you doing offbeat roles all the time?

Because I always look at how I can add to a role. I will look like a fool if I do an item number but if you ask me to do the role of a dancer in a dance-based film I would take six months off to learn dancing. I have to be comfy.

Do you think it is tough to survive in Bollywood?

There is no place for mistakes here. Bollywood operates on a formula. If you want to move away from it then either they say “You have guts” or they say “This guy is arrogant”.

Being Dharmendra’s nephew has made a difference...

Initially it was a disadvantage because people perceived me with prejudice. But now the Deol tag is an advantage because they know what I am about.

Are you in a relationship?

I was in a relationship for a long time but I would want to keep my life private. There is too much interest in star couples in B’wood, that’s why my girl will be always be from outside the industry.

What do you think of Harman, Ranbir and Imran?

I have not seen their films but I feel they are extremely talented. Since there is no place for individuality in our Hindi film industry, I don’t know how much their talent will blossom.

Why have you not seen any of their films?

Because it doesn’t affect my work in any way. I am not competitive so I don’t go to the theatre to watch a film to see what kind of work the hero is doing. I only watch films that interest me.

Abhay’s take on his...

Acting – Earlier I would give myself -5 on 10 now it would be - 2.

Physique – I don’t like the beefy look. Earlier I had a four pack but I lost it because I didn’t work on it. I like yoga and also swim.

Dancing – I am great at the disco but am pretty bad when I have a choreographer around me.

ActionI think I am good at action. In Oye.. I jumped over a 15-foot fence that left the unit pretty perplexed.

Commercial viability - Going by my track record I would say I am a flop so far.

‘Roles of the larger-than-life hero are beyond me’

December 05, 2008

He’s excelled in playing guys on the edge.. with quirks and what movie argots call ‘grey shades.’ And he has a niche of his own in the Bollywood market. Recently, his Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! was enthusiastically thumbed up by the critics.. but at the cash counters it was another story. Does that dampen the spirit of an actor who dares to be different and quality conscious? Abhay Deol in a kab-kyon-kahan session with Vajir Singh...

It seems, once you were toying with four different professions — acting, painting, philosophy and journalism. If you were a journalist, what would you have asked Abhay Deol at this very minute?
Ha! If I were a reporter, I would ask Abhay Deol how long he will survive in this industry.

So, how long will Abhay Deol survive in this industry?
As long as I stay here and I’m accepted.

Do you paint?
Long ago I was asked — besides acting, which profession would I have selected? So I had said, “Painting, philosophy or journalism.” That’s why all those exalted professions have been thrust upon me. I wish I was that multi-talented really.

Would you agree that the release of Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! should have been pushed ahead by a week?
It was too late to postpone the release. After the terror attacks, only one day was left for us to decide. I’m aware of the fact that my film did bad business in its first weekend. But then that was expected. I was deeply affected by what was happening around us.. so how could I expect anyone else to go and see my film? Thankfully though, the film got great reviews. The hard work that has gone into Oye Lucky! has been appreciated. I would want the collections to grow but if they don’t, that’s okay. One can’t even think of one’s personal situation at a time of what Bombay.. and the country are going through. Although the film may not be declared a hit, I’m sure in the long run it will make a place for itself in the successful bracket. I’m sure everyone will watch it on DVD and TV.

What attracted you to Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!?
The story. And I liked (director) Dibakar Banerjee’s passion for cinema. He just gave me a brief about the film and I was on. I hadn’t seen Khosla ka Ghosla when I said yes-yes-yes for Oye Lucky!

Some feel that your choice of film projects is often weird..unconventional.
Many say that. I read scripts very objectively and if something connects, I go ahead with it. An interesting story becomes more interesting if the character I’m playing is interesting too. The next step is to see who’s directing and then who’s backing the film. I don’t go by the industry norms of commercial cinema or of meaningful cinema. Here most filmmakers don’t even know what they want to do or what to make. So, it’s wiser to work with those filmmakers who know exactly what they want to do.

You have worked mainly with new directors. Is this because you want established directors to come to you with what are called bound scripts?
To be absolutely honest, it’s the other way around. I’ve never been offered an enormous, big-budget project. But yes, for me, the story comes first. I don’t feel dissatisfied at the end of the day. Like every actor, of course, I would like to get offers from big banners. Whoever wants to work with me will come my way. Isn’t it?

Has waiting for filmmakers to knock on your door worked in your favour?
Absolutely. I’m really happy with the way my career has shaped up. I’m humbled by the audience reaction. Initially, there were some fears but not any more. If I were to rewrite my career, I wouldn’t change a word.

After Socha Na Tha for Vijayeta Films, you have worked only for outside banners.. was this a move to branch out from the family?
Yes, I wanted to go out and work on my own. At the same time, I’m looking for a script in which I can work with my tayaji (Dharmendra) and brothers (Sunny and Bobby Deol). I don’t know if I’d be able to act when I’m in the same frame with my family.

Going by the films you’ve done, it would seem that you’re against hardcore commercial cinema.
I’m not against anything. My fundas are very clear — live and let live. But I do feel that roles of the larger-than-life hero are beyond me.After seeing Oye Lucky!, Imtiaz Ali called me up and said, “I always wondered if you would be able to survive in this industry because you don’t want to sing and dance. But you have and you always will.” I’m doing what I’m capable of. And please tell me, why can’t we have films without songs and dances?

Your first director Imtiaz Ali has moved on and is working with big actors and big budget films.
That’s good. We all want to grow.. become successful.. and earn money.

Any chances of working with him again?
Sure! At the right time when the right script arrives. You do have a strong female fan following.. and they want to see you singing and dancing. Whoever is my fan has become one after watching my movies. So, I will try my best to make more films with more progressive ideas.

News is that whenever you have time you go to New York to learn dancing.
Ha ha. I travel a lot. Recently, I went to Spain and picked up Spanish in a month. New York is great, you can take part in concerts.. attend art classes and dance too. When I have a break and I’m not shooting, I go abroad to try and update myself. Here in India, I don’t know where to go for classes. The Mumbai traffic is so impossible that quite often I don’t leave the house unless I have to go to work.

How come you recently turned producer with Junction?
I had signed this film as an actor but the original producer backed out. I love the process of making movies. I was fascinated by the story of Junction and I have full faith in the director Atul Sabarwal. But then I was already committed for Dev D and Oye Lucky! Junction will start next year.

Are you disheartened when your movies don’t click?
Yes, a couple of times but I knew they wouldn’t do well. I even told one of my producers that he’d made a good film but he wasn’t strong enough to market it the way he should have. Apart from marketing, if you don’t get a proper chain of theatres and the correct show timings, who’ll come to see your film?

We don’t see you doing many endorsements.
It’s just that I don’t want to do too many things. Recently, I did an ad for Airtel because I thought it’s a nice brand to be a part of. I want to focus more on films. Even in ad films, I should be satisfied with what my role is. I don’t want to become so famous that people watch me as Abhay Deol and not as an actor.

You’re not in the news for any link-ups either..
That’s good. I’ve always been media shy. Today, I don’t have a life beyond work.

So you aren’t lucky in love?
I haven’t had the time. At the moment, I’m not into any relationship. A relationship needs time.. and if you don’t have the time or space for each other what’s the point of getting into one?

‘I don’t look like a hero’

Abhay Deol on his unconventional movie choices, playing Devdas, not going the Deol way and his aversion to dance

Do you ever feel Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! was not as lucky with the timing of its release (two days after 26/11)?
I don’t believe in luck. Nobody could predict what happened in Mumbai. That is a much bigger tragedy. I truly understand that people didn’t feel like watching a film when such a heinous attack had taken place. Even I was shaken.

Couldn’t the producers (UTV) stall the release?
We only had a day (Thursday) to decide. Since it was releasing worldwide and had already opened in USA and the Middle-East, the pirated DVDs would have hit the market, it was too late to stop the release. So I made peace with it and supported the decision to go ahead. It was a confusing place to be in. I was so upset and angry with what the city was going through and on the other hand, my movie was releasing. But I’m sure the goodness of the film will translate somehow or the other into revenue. If the theatre collections are low, it will score big on DVD and satellite television. At the end of the day, a good film always finds its audience.

You played a Dilliwallah to the hilt, how did you do your homework?
Since I’m not from Delhi, I had no opinion on playing a Dilliwallah. I blindly followed my director Dibakar Banerjee’s instructions. I spent some time with guys in our crew who were from Delhi, like Akshay who has done the rap version of Super Chor and my fellow actor, Manu, who plays my friend, Bangali, in the film. I tried to get the diction and the body language right.

In the three years you’ve been here, you’ve come to be regarded as the poster-boy of meaningful cinema. Are you comfortable with that tag?
(Laughs) It’s a nice tag! Jokes apart, I just pick up the scripts that I like. It hasn’t been a conscious decision on my part to do certain kind of films. The choices I’ve made have put me on this path. I do a film if I’m excited about the character and the story. Larger-than-life roles have never excited me. I’d rather play someone real who goes through obstacles and becomes a hero. I’m not cut out to play a filmi hero. I don’t look like a hero.

Do you have any reason for working with so many new directors?
When these new guys came to me, they didn’t have anything to show me except what they had written. Since I liked the scripts I thought I might as well take a chance. Sure there were a lot of insecurities working with a new director but at the end of the day, every film is a risk.

Do you feel more responsible as an actor with your image of doing different kind of films?
It’s the way you look at it. There are more expectations and so more responsibility. But I still do only films that I believe in. I’m passionate about my job as an actor. I’m humbled by the reviews of the audience and the critics. Everyone has warmed to me with each film that I’ve done. It didn’t start like that. After Socha Na Tha flopped, nobody wanted to work with me. I became very bitter and angry. So now when the industry and the audience accept me, I feel more empowered.

The general perception is that your cinema only caters to the multiplex audience. Do you agree?
It depends on the film. I’ve always given the benefit of the doubt to the audience. When a film is good, the lines between single-screen and multiplex blur. By and large, we have a thinking audience. There will always be a market for the formula masala films but there is also a space for independent films. It’s just that till now the audience was only being fed one type of cinema. Multiplexes have helped in serving the other kind of cinema and I’m happy to be a part of it.

Is it safe to say you’re unconventional in real life too?
(Laughs) Let’s just say I’m pretty normal, but it’s relative.

Have you consciously avoided venturing into the Deol territory of maar-dhaar action?
It’s not that I’ve made any conscious effort to be different from my tauji (Dharmendra) and cousins (Sunny and Bobby Deol). I knew I can’t do what they have been doing so I wasn’t even going to try. I’ll look really silly running around trees. No offence to anyone but I think all the actors look like each other. It’s as if they are operating on a template: a dance sequence followed by a romantic sequence which is followed by a fight sequence. It’s sad to see such talented actors follow the formula. My cousins openly say that they can’t dance but they still do it because the formula demands it. I can’t work like that.

So you’ll never dance on screen?
Well, I did for the song Pyaar ki ek kahani suno in Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd and also for the music video of Ek Chalis Ki Last Local, which had nothing to do with the film. Let me tell you these were the worst experiences of my film career. I was very nervous and didn’t like it at all.

Is Devdas wacky as it looks from the teasers?
Laughs) It has dark humour, but it’s very much the story of Devdas. The film is based in this day and age in Delhi. I came up with the concept of the film and would go around narrating it but nobody could guess it was Devdas. I narrated it to Anurag Kashyap and he loved it. He has made it in his style.

What are your impressions about Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s character?
To my mind, Devdas was an obsessive addict and that’s how I’ve played him. I don’t see him as a romantic hero. He was a rich spoilt kid who had his own vulnerabilities and addictions. Paro was his addiction.

When are you teaming up with your Socha Na Tha director, Imtiaz Ali?
When the right opportunity comes. It’ll be really good since we started our careers together. I’m happy that Imtiaz has got his due with Jab We Met. The other day he sent me a nice message after watching Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! saying, “I didn’t really think you’ll make it here but you managed to pull it off.” That’s very encouraging.

Abhay Deol believes in Forbid-Den films

Monday, January 12, 2009

Actor Abhay Deol has never believed in being a part of the Bollywood rat race. He does things on his own terms and on his own pace. And therefore it comes as no surprise that the actor would choose to launch his own production company called, Forbid-Den Films, so early in his career.

“Yes I am launching my production house. I have been acting for a while now. I have done so many films and now I want to do some thing different but in this line of work only…Like I want to shift to another branch of same tree. Hence I came up with the idea to launch my own production house,” says Abhay.

The actor seems to have a business bend right from the start. In fact he says that he is the person behind his soon to be released film Dev D. “I asked Anurag to make this film for me. I had read the book (Devdas) and that’s when the idea of a modern Devdas came to my mind. I play the role of modern Devdas but it is not only different as in that it’s not just modern….there are some other changes in the whole story as well.”

“In fact I have also helped Anurag in this film as a trainee. And I think it’s great as I am learning here and won’t have any problems when I launch my own production house. This is the first film in which I have worked behind the camera too,” he adds.

And keeping his on screen trend of selecting off beat characters, the name of the actors production house is also quite hatke.

”If you go through my profile I have mostly worked with debutant directors and my films are also very hatke. And after having done such films which are quite doubtful scripts when on paper, I decided to come up with this name,” says Abhay.

Abhay has already signed his first director. Atul Sabhrawal is directing his next filmunder Forbid-Den Films which will go on the floors only at the end of 2009.

'Dev D' more about songs than dialogues: Abhay Deol

January 10, 2009

Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyaya's novel "Devdas" has been explored by various filmmakers, but Bollywood actor Abhay Deol says his modern-day interpretation of the book "Dev D" is different.

"It's not a verbal film, it's very heavy on music. If I compile my dialogues delivered in the film, not more than four pages will be covered," Abhay told IANS on phone from Mumbai.

" 'Devdas' has been made before, but this one has a very new, fresh and out of the box approach. Nobody had ever thought of making 'Devdas' in this contemporary way," he added.

"Dev D", which is set to release Feb 6, is directed by Anurag Kashyap and boasts of 18 tracks including Rajasthani, Punjabi and Awadhi folk numbers compiled by music director Amit Trivedi.

The 32-year-old actor, who maintains that he does films that are relatable, made his debut in 2005 with Socha Na Tha, a home production. He then went on to prove his acting prowess with films like Ahista Ahista, Manorama Six Feet Under, Ek Chalis Ki Last Local and "Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd".

Speaking on his current project, Abhay said: "When I read the book I realised that Devdas had streaks of arrogance and possessiveness. We kept those features and made the character very urban, a city guy."

"It's a deep character, but I did not have to work a lot on my body, look and attitude because the role did not require me to portray a character from a different background altogether," added the actor.

The idea of the film, that is Abhay's brainchild, is different. But will this version of the classic click with the audience?

"'Dev D' adopts an unusual and contemporary approach and I think that is exactly what will work for the film, because it will be like a revelation for the people. It's always good to turn a stereotype image and experiment with it."

The film will be introducing two new actors as the new age Paro and Chandramukhi.

"Mahi and Kalki were very nice to work with. They were so professional that it didn't seem they are making their debut with this film. Very sweet, very honest with their work and very hardworking," Abhay said.

Deviating from his present profession, the experimental actor is all set to don the hat of a producer. He will be producing a film called "Junction" that will be directed by Atul Sabharwal.

However, Abhay maintains that his acting career will not take a backseat because of his newfound role.

"I will continue acting in films for sure," he said.

After "Dev D", Abhay is all set to prove his mettle with Dev Benegal's yet-to-be-titled film.

I would have hit the bottle: Abhay Deol

By Anand Vaishnav . Buzz18 Jan 10, 2009

He may not be the luckiest actor in town but Abhay Deol is certainly amongst the most fearless. As he gets ready to roll out his own, unconventional take on Devdas we talk to him about the now famous Emosanal Attyachar and more...

Apart from doing drugs (as shown in the promos) what are the other wild things that the new Devdas indulges in?

I think what you see in the promos is pretty wild already. It's not so much about drugs. It's about one man's mental space. His obsession with another character. The vulnerabilities of the character draw him towards those substances.

But it's the story of Devdas, which we all know. So what's so novel about your version?

We have made it contemporary. That's the biggest change. Devdas is an iconic subject and character but I would like to look at ours as an original approach. I would like to believe Dev.D has infused a new life into Devdas. When you have an established setup like Devdas' plot the risk increases. But I have played him the way the original writer would have perceived it. The changes will be visible on the surface. He wouldn't wear a hat today or drive cars from 1917. But barring that we haven't tampered with essence of the subject.

Bhansali and Shah Rukh Khan received a lot of flak for their Devdas. Aren't you apprehensive about how fans would react to your interpretation of the classic?

To be really honest I haven’t thought about that. I kept my focus on what my intentions were in doing this film and coming up with the concept. If I were to think about Bhansali's version and my personal views on that film I wouldn't have made Dev.D. The idea was to raise the bar in my way and go ahead with it.

Devdas is accused of being a male chauvinist and at the same time a person without guts. How do you personally read the character?

He is definitely a spoilt brat. His addiction comes from his personality. Given the way he loves Paro and obsesses over her, it's almost like he is addicted to her. It makes full sense for him to drown himself into drugs and alcohol. He is a highly emotional personal who wouldn't have gone astray had he got support and right guidance in life.

Have you been a victim of Emosanal Attyachar? And would Abhay Deol react in the same way as Dev D?

You have to be inhuman to not be a victim of emotional attyachar at some point in your life. Ya Ya completely…I just hit the bottle (Laughs).

What do your uncle and brothers think of your films?

They are very happy with what I have done. And given me all the support and encouragement that one can ask for.

You are starting your own production house. Why don't you ask Vijayta Films to back the films you like?

I want to work with them for sure. Just waiting for the rights script. But as far my own production is concerned, it's more about finding my feet in the industry. The intention is to have a career choice outside of acting. Vijayta Films is family. I can always work for them. I would at some point in fact want them to do something for me. Just offers all of us a wider platform.

Your characters always steer to the darker side of life. Is it just a coincidence or do you actually possess such tendencies?

All actors say they want to raise the bar. I suppose raising the bar comes easier when you deal with darker subjects. In lighter films you only raise the laughs. Which is also something I would like to do. But personally I prefer black humour. That's why Ek Challis Ki Last Local is one of my favourite films. Dev.D is may be my darkest film yet but don’t forget I have even done Socha Na Tha and Ahista Ahista. It’s just worked out that way.

But isn't there a temptation to carry on the Deol tradition and do a Ghayal or a Soldier?

I think people don't want to see such films these days. A change is happening. What worked in the 80s and 90s doesn’t work today. At the same time there is a big question mark on what people actually want to see. Everyone's trying all sorts of stuff just to try and crack the new formula.

If given a chance to do a Ghajini where the package becomes bigger than the actor would you be game?

I think in those films the package was all about the actor...

Do you do these films out of choice or you feel since you can't do what Abhishek and Hrithik do, it's better to create a niche for yourself?

A bit of both. I have done things I have liked. But at the same time I am not drawn to films that have larger-than-life characters. When the plot is relatable I am creatively challenged. But if it is all make believe I just step back and watch without getting involved in the subject. I have just followed my instinct.

Now No Smoking went above most people's heads. Is Anurag's new film a little more straightforward?

Dev.D is not a story that needs to be explained. I am glad you asked me this. Because before comparing it to No Smoking, I would like people to watch the film first. Dev.D is the story of Devdas as we all know. So there is no way it can be as abstract as No Smoking.

Finally how long will you survive on critical acclaim. Don't you miss a big commercial success?

That remains to be seen. I am not a crystal ball. I am definitely happy with the way things have worked out and don't want to compromise on the quality of my work. Do I want commercial success? Yes I want huge box office hits and mass public acceptance. The effort will always be there. But if it doesn’t happen I don't think I can do something that's just a package. I am not capable of that.

OYE PROMOTION PROMOTION OYE

Published: on Nov 06 2008 @ 12:14 am

Can I risk saying that the part of films I hate most, is promoting it?

It’s not about the ego, it’s not about projecting an image, it’s not about being lazy or anything else you might think. The truth is, I love making movies but I just don’t have it in me to sell them. I am an actor not a salesman, but most people seem to think that the two are one and the same.

I find promoting extremely tiring. It basically means I have to answer the same questions (and there are usually three at the most) a 1000 times, in the span of 8 to 9 hours.

It usually goes like this –

1. What is the film about?

2. How was it working with the director?

3. Are you having/had an affair with the actress?

While they have to ask the first two questions, they are most interested in the third one and the rest of the interview almost always focuses on that. With a scandalous headline to match! No wonder most people perceive actors to be sex-starved maniacs.

I’m in this business because I love it. Besides the fact that I was never good at anything else, I actually find satisfaction at the end of a long day at the office (which could be anywhere within the country or the globe). I love entertaining people and taking them away from reality for the few hours that a film lasts. I love making them dig deep within their conscience and making them perhaps re-evaluate their lives or even their values. Most of all, I like being in someone else’s shoes. It helps me understand myself that much more.

But it’s a double-edged sword. We live in a world that is obsessed with celebrity and celebrity lifestyle. I am a very private person and cringe at attention but if I don’t get recognized then that simply means no one is watching my work. So recognition is essential but what I find hard to deal with is obsession. Nothing makes me happier than someone coming up to me and saying, “we saw your film and loved it”, and nothing makes me blush more than someone wanting to take my picture and my autograph and my phone number. Am I asking to eat my cake and keep it to? I am not so sure anymore.

I’m so tempted to write about my journey within the industry. About facing prejudice more than the average person, of trying to keep my individuality in the face of an industry that only wants to mould you in the image of a “hero”. Of trying to do films that everyone says, “won’t work”, or with directors that the producers and distributors will not support. But it won’t serve any purpose because five films down, that has become my strength and people and critics have responded positively. There are those who say that I have it easy because I am the only one doing the kind of films I do. I’d like them to try and get to do what I have done. If I am reaping the benefits today, it is only because I have been through the worst.

I’ll take the risk of being politically-incorrect and say that the crew of Oye Lucky Lucky Oye was the best one I have ever worked with. Dibakar also makes films because he loves making them and the money and success that comes with it, is just a bonus. I’ll work with him anytime and on any subject. Paresh Rawal is an amazing actor and an even more amazing person. Archana Puran Singh is a comedienne on camera and off it, and my jaw ached from laughing every time I hung out with her. Neetu has talent that is still untapped and I hope she does films that explore her vast potential. Added to that are actors like Manu and Richa who you will see when the films comes out, that we have a pool of talent, waiting to be discovered. I am very thankful to them for being who they are and treating me just as a fellow actor and not some star who must be alienated.

Then there is Kartik, the DP, who treated every frame as if he were painting it. A little insight into him, he almost always looked grumpy, but was always actually happy. Dibakar and he had a great rapport on set and the two of them made shooting easy. All in all, I hope the audience likes Oye Lucky Lucky Oye. Whether you like it, love it, or even hate it, I can safely say it is not a film that is pretentious, or stylish without any substance. It is original in so many ways and further solidifies Dibakar’s style of capturing the many nuances of Delhi and its people.

Like I said before, I am not a salesman but an actor and the two are not one and the same, but I hope I did a good job of selling the film to you through this article more than any representative from any studio could have.

Six films old

New Delhi January 18, 2009

Abhay of the Deol family hasn't been in the movie business long, but has already made an indelible mark.

How long does it take for an actor to become automatically associated with low-key but high-quality cinema? Abhay Deol is just six films old (the seventh, Dev D, releases next month), he’s played the lead in most of these, and there isn’t a weak link among them so far.

Serious movie buffs — the ones who can look beyond box-office collections — know exactly what to expect from his films: a strong script, a director willing to explore new terrain, and an understated but very effective lead performance. The rise of his career graph has been equally understated — his movies haven’t been smash hits so far but they have dedicated cult followings.

During a telephonic interview with Deol, I mention that this trajectory is especially notable in light of his family background. As a boy growing up in the 1980s (he was born in 1976), he would have watched the mainstream pulp that his paternal uncle Dharmendra and his much-older cousin Sunny Deol were doing at the time. A certain amount of hero-worshipping must have taken place at that age. (“Yes, of course,” Deol says.) So how did he get from there to where he is today, a standard-bearer for small, script-driven movies?

I’m half-expecting Deol to underplay the family connection. Not a bit of it. “But that’s just the point,” he says, “I had wider exposure precisely because I was from a filmi family.” He speaks fluently and warmly, and somewhat faster than I had expected, rarely pausing for breath. “My taayaji and brothers travelled the world during their shoots, and through them I got to know about other cinemas, the possibilities of other types of movies. Most Indian youngsters didn’t have that exposure before satellite TV came in, but I was lucky.”

Of course, this in itself doesn’t explain Deol’s choice of roles; most other star-children his age are doing big-banner movies with assembly-line screenplays. But he developed a varied taste at an early age, he explains — he was watching regular kiddie fare like Star Wars alongside more challenging films such as Brazil and Blade Runner. “I was too young to understand all the nuances,” he says (while I shake my head to dispel visions of Dharmendra bringing home Terry Gilliam video-cassettes for his little nephew), “but I loved the look of these movies, and they motivated me to explore further.” He admits to a fondness for Iranian cinema. “Given the limitations on what they can show, it’s amazing how much they’ve achieved. It’s a conservative culture, like ours, but they put subtle emotion ahead of gloss.”

Subtlety is the hallmark of Deol’s own performances. As the engineer Satyaveer in Navdeep Singh’s excellent “Rajasthani noir” Manorama Six Feet Under, he was the epitome of the small-town Everyman, vaguely aspiring to better things but not driven enough to do much about it. Occupying a very different world from this character is the go-getting thief Lucky Singh in Dibakar Banerjee’s Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!, but Deol brings a fine shade to even this flamboyant role. Lucky is a charismatic rogue, but we can see the effort that goes into his facade of self-assurance. He’s a fully realised character.

“Well, I liked films where I could relate to the people — where I found them tangible and real,” Deol says, “As you know, most of the Hindi movies we grew up with were full of larger-than-life characters. I would be entertained by them, but I didn’t feel a connect.”

Asked for examples of actors who have inspired him, he mentions Charlize Theron in Monster. “Now there’s a performance that could make you empathise with a serial killer, a woman who’s monstrous on the surface. She puts the viewer in the character’s shoes, showing us how cruel and isolating society can be — how it can push you into a corner. I’d love to do work like that, which opens your mind to other lives.”

Deol has enjoyed playing the title role in Dev D, an updating of the Devdas story, made by that most individualistic of filmmakers, Anurag Kashyap. Having only worked with relatively inexperienced directors so far, was it intimidating to be helmed by a man who is among Bollywood’s few genuine auteurs? “No, Anurag has been a friend for a long time, so there was nothing to be scared about,” he replies, “Besides, in my view, an actor is a tool in any director’s hands. For that matter, a director himself is a tool — I think of a film as one big jigsaw puzzle, which everyone contributes to.”

And he’s excited about the adrenaline, the originality of treatment, that Kashyap has brought to a familiar tale. “Our setting is modern, urban and gritty,” he says, “but deep down this is very much the Devdas story as it was written nearly a hundred years ago. When I read the book, I was fascinated by all the angst towards social norms, which has been poured out through this one character. We haven’t tampered with that spirit.”

“I tried to dig deep into Dev’s psyche, and I hope I’ve succeeded.”

A couple of decades ago, Naseeruddin Shah — the thinking man’s actor for another generation — decided to shrug off the “Serious” tag and have a grand old time in films like Karma and Tridev. Does Deol see himself doing something similar down the line? “But my intention even now is to make films that are commercial,” he insists. “I don’t care for watertight divisions — it’s not like I’m trying to select movies that won’t do well.” Strong scripts are what attract him, and in the final analysis the only distinction to be made is “between a good film and a bad film”. Going by his record so far, it’s likely that he’ll maintain that distinction.

Bollywood is changing Hollywood is not: Abhay.

22 Jan 2009

Abhay Deol is not somebody who can stay at one place for too long. He’s one of those who need to take a break every now and then.

If I don’t get that, I tend to go crazy,” he grins, “It’s very important for me to take gaps, that rejuvenate me mentally.” Sticking to his theory, the actor’s once again ready for his break. He’s left for New York for “a couple of months” just to live in another city. And while there, he plans to explore different expressions of art.

I might take up dance classes or acting classes or even pottery,” says Abhay who adds that he’s doing this for creative satisfaction. But the actor clarifies that he would be in and out of Mumbai as required.

And while on that, we can’t resist asking him if he would be hobnobbing with Hollywood agents as well. “I won’t go out of my way to meet them but yes, if something good comes my way, I would like to take it up,” he replies. But before one jumps to conclusions, Abhay is quick to clarify, “I will take up something only if it parallels the work I’m doing here, otherwise I’m not going to start my life as a struggling actor there. I have my work cut out for me here. There are a lot of people I want to work with. It’s a bigger opportunity to be in Bollywood than anywhere else at the moment. Bollywood is changing, Hollywood is not.”

Abhay’s movie choices have always been different, to say the least. Whether it’s been Manorama Six Feet Under, Ek Chaalis Ki Last Local or the more recent Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye!, the actor has refused to toe the line. And now with Anurag Kashyap’s Dev D, he continues with his non-conformist image. “I play characters which are relatable, where I feel empathy for them. I believe the hero is somebody who has the world against him, he has the wit or the brains to conquer the troubles and becomes a hero and those are the kind of characters that appeal to me. So it becomes difficult for me to take on larger-than-life roles,” he says.

As for Dev D, Abhay says that his character is the classic portrayal of Devdas from Sarat Chandra’s novel. “I really feel that he was trying to provoke the reader, as if he was angry at the time he wrote this and wanted to have a catharsis through the writing of his book. I played upon the same emotions,” he says. After this film, he has Dev Benegal’s untitled film and two more films in his kitty besides his own debut as a producer with Junction.

As for those who criticise the talented actor for not conforming to the action image of his uncle Dharmendra or cousins Sunny and Bobby Deol, Abhay has another thing coming. “My family is very proud of me,” he says.

But he can’t help adding with a laugh, “My own father gets a tad insecure with my choice of films though. The three questions he definitely asks when I sign a film are: ‘Which is the banner, who’s the heroine and how many songs are there in the film!’” Abhay adds that in such times, his biggest supporter is Dharmendra. “Taayaji keeps telling my father to let me do what I want. At the end of the day, the audience and critics are supporting me despite the fact that I don’t have a major success to my credit. That acceptance is worth a lot more than what car I’m driving or what’s my bank balance. Why does success have to be about how big the pay cheque is?”

Dev D is little hard to watch with your mom and dad: Abhay Deol

By Joginder Tuteja

'It's all about loving your family', agrees Abhay Deol. He also says that a film like Dev D should be watched by an entire family.

A word of caution though is thrown by him - "Dev D is a family film but not the kind that should be watched by all the family members 'together'. Joginder Tuteja catches Abhay Deol in a candid mood as he talks about Dev D which releases all over today.

What kind of audience are you looking for Dev D?
We are looking at a family audience. It's a wholesome family entertainer; though just don't watch it with your family (laughs). In the film, we are candid about sex and violence.

Though none of it is visually explicit, it's one film where it would be a little hard for you to watch it with your mom and dad. Mark my words though - they will like the film too! The subject is such that it would reach out to one and all; people will appreciate it.

Along with 'emotional atyachaar', even 'emotional violence' seems to be inherent to Dev D.
(Laughs) But we are certainly not endorsing violence in the film. We are showing it the way it is written down in the book. I don't think anyone can be offended by the so-called violent streak of the film. Come on, I mean it when I say that Dev D is a family film!

After years we are seeing a film where drugs play a major role in the narrative.
See, the thing is that there are so many masala movies out there as well where drug usage has been shown. It's just that since things are not considered real there, it's not taken seriously.

Here we are more implicit; the drug usage is more candid. Everything else is more implied. Sometimes the less of what you see sticks out, especially so when you treat it in realistic manner.

This is why drugs and sex is getting noticed in Dev D because all of it being presented in a much more believable manner. Since it is real, it comes across as explicit!

But tell me honestly, isn't it a mental turmoil for an actor to be in a part of such a role?
Since Anurag's way of making movies doesn't have any space for superficial level of storytelling, it does get a mental turmoil on.

When you are portraying a character like 'Devdas' for like an entire day, it does become intriguing and exhausting. It turns out to be much more than just other film because you are constantly working in a film that takes so many different pitches. One does tend to get exhausted.

Anurag (Kashyap) says that it was the film's music that helped him relax once he returned home after a heavy day at work. True for you too?
Amit Trivedi's music for the film is truly brilliant. Each of the tracks shows the state of the character's mind and works superbly with the film. Numbers like 'Duniya', 'Nayan Tarse' and 'Maahi Mainu' are my favorites. Dev D is one of rare out and out musicals that have been made.

Also, for a subject like 'Devdas', we can't be fools by not having songs. Each of the 18 tracks has a reason to be in the movie. They play in the background and go down quite well while in accordance with Anurag's vision of incorporating music in the narrative.

There was music in No Smoking too...
But here you will see a difference when compared to No Smoking. There is a lot of humor derived from the songs. Also, they play for the moment and take the narrative further. Let's face it, a song less film by itself is considered as a parallel film so when we had 18 tracks at our disposal, how could we not allow Dev D to become as commercial as it can.

But weren't you worried about doing Dev D considering Anurag was fresh out of No Smoking?
Why do you guys keep forgetting Black Friday? See, No Smoking was always going to be on a different tangent altogether. I don't think the non-performance of the film at the box office was created any trap for Dev D.

There is no insecurity whatsoever, why would I? I never felt like that even once while working on the film. I respect Anurag Kashyap. He has it in him to make a movie in a certain way and comes with an ability to deliver.

One really wishes that Dev D works though you would consider yourself a little unlucky with Oye Lucky Lucky Oye, right?
No way, I guess the film fetched itself as well as me some great response. And then it released at the time (the Mumbai terror attack) when there were so many other tragedies happening around us.

For us the film not taking a great opening was a small tragedy. In any case, as the weeks unfolded, the film did get steady. No, it didn't rake in huge collections but people were curious as the film continued to play on in theaters and then on TV.

The film has certainly recovered its money, it's not a flop. It's a little success in its own way. It gained public acceptance, got all of us some good acclaim and credibility.
