We Need to Work as One Family: Sunny Deol
By Subhash K. Jha

Mumbai
fter delivering a hit with "Apne", the Deols have decided to become a self-contained film producing concern with elder son Sunny getting again into direction years after "Dillagi".

"We'll be consolidating our company. I'll be directing a film shortly," Sunny told IANS in an interview.

Eventually, the actor wants his father Dharmendra and brother Bobby to be part of one production house.

"The world is going global, and for us to do so we need to work as one family. So, yes, we Deols want to get together."

The big brother is quite protective about Bobby. He wants Bobby, who has lately become enormously prolific as an actor, to have the comfort of a home production at his disposal.

"These so-called friends and well-wishers of his who make films with him take him for a ride. But I've understood how these games work. And I don't want him to go through all this.

"Why even in Anil Sharma's 'Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyo' Bobby didn't get his dues. I was too busy at that time to look into it. By the time I became aware of Bobby's role, it was too late."

Sunny has realized family comes first... and last.

"Anil Sharma is planning another film for us. We'll get directors. But we'll produce the films. So we aren't taken for a ride."

He says his period of tumult and transition is over.

"I'm much calmer now. I realize doing films isn't enough. Both critics and the masses have to love your work. With our family film 'Apne' I think we've got the formula right. It was the kind of film I wanted to see. So that's the kind of films I'd like to make."

Throwing light on his next family film, Sunny said: " 'Apne' was an emotional film. Now we'd like to a comedy together. Meanwhile, I'm ready to co-direct a film called 'Man' with Neeraj Pathak."

Promoting new talent has always been a passion for Sunny.

"I like to work with new talent. While Bobby is only interested in being an actor, I've been involved with everything from editing to screenwriting right from the time of my debut film 'Betaab'.

"But once they become established these people who start off with me move away to what they consider better prospects. But we Deols will continue to nurture new talent. I've many ideas. And I need talent to implement those ideas."

Sunny wants to make realistic films.

"But still larger-than-life, to go with my image... I see my career as having many curves. Yes, I've made many mistakes, though neglecting my career to look after my brother Bobby isn't one of them. I've been too trusting and emotional. Even now I trust people around me. But I don't have blind faith. I won't spend money on films with my eyes closed."

Post-"Gadar - Ek Prem Katha" (2001), the actor didn't enjoy much success at the box office. Most of his recent releases like "Kaafila", "Naksha" and "Jo Bole So Nihaal", turned turtle at the box office.
Sunny, who also produced "Dillagi"(1999), says the mistakes as a producer and as an actor have been a learning experience.

"Life is the biggest teacher. Today I'm very clear about what I want. All people creating cinema around me have to be as disciplined as me. Except Bobby, all of us wake up early and get to work."

"So far we've all been just doing our work and letting it speak for us. But when we did 'Apne' we Deols decided that it's time we also spoke for our work."

Sunny Deol will no longer work with other banners. He talks about renewing his own banner Vijeyta productions. He is emotionally attached to the film Apne as he would be starring with dad Dharmendra and younger brother Bobby Deol.

Sunny Deol is pretty excited these days. The promos of his ambitious film, Apne, that also stars father Dharmendra and younger brother Bobby Deol are out. The film is scheduled to release within a month?s time.

Sunny has decided that he will no longer work with other banners and concentrate on his reviving own banner Vijeyta productions.

Sunny says, ?By the end of the year I will finish all my projects and will be restarting my own banner. I am currently working on many scripts and at the end of the year we will start with a big bang. I will stop working in all the outside films and only work on films which we will be making under our banner. I don?t know if I will be directing any of the films but I will surely be creatively involved in all of them along with my dad.?

While speaking about Apne, Sunny says, ?We have said time and again that we are looking for the right subject to work together and eventually Anil Sharma came up with it. All of us immediately agreed that this is the right film for us. Apne is the kind of film which everyone will relate to. I am very emotionally attached to Apne and I am sure that everyone will love it. My father has not been working from sometime now simply because there were no scripts that could do justice to him but the moment you see him in Apne, you will see an aura around him. He is like a vulnerable child while acting and not the father we know. Ours is a close-knit family and even though we are in awe of him, all of us are comfortable working with him. In Apne he is the central character.?

What does he think of the sequel trend? Sunny says, ?I know a lot has been said about sequels and I think they are like a guarantee for success and we will definitely be producing some, depending on the right script. The financial problems are virtually taken care of and I want to finish everything off and move ahead, never to look back.?

I'm not a saleable proposition right now: Sunny Deol
IANS - 12/8/2006

Mumbai, Dec 9 (IANS) Actor Sunny Deol, who hasn't had any big hits recently, says that he is avoiding romantic films because he has become too old for them.

But he is looking forward to Chandraprakash Diwedi's historical love saga "Prithviraj-Sanjukta". "I've got the script and it's fantastic," Sunny told IANS in an interview.

But Sunny is not getting a financer for "Prithviraj-Sanjukta".

"Problem is, people aren't willing to touch good directors. I can't understand why! Unfortunately, my recent films haven't done well. As far as the market goes, I'm not a saleable proposition right now."

The actor is visibly unhappy with the influx of corporate houses in filmdom.

"They've no or little idea of the creative aspects of cinema. They can't tell a good script from bad. It's a dangerous situation."

The actor is planning to direct a film in near future.

"Yes, I'll be directing quite a lot of films once I get into the groove. I'm working on a couple of scripts. My creative thoughts are simmering."

Excerpts:

Why do you continue to be so media shy?

I've always been a very shy person. I'd rather let my work speak for me. Finally, the audience judges you by what you do rather than what you say. Talking about oneself maybe is the norm these days. But I'm happy the way I am. If people like me, fine. If they don't, how much can I convince them that I am good?

You are especially uncomfortable on television?

I'm uncomfortable in print also. I'm not good at interviews. When you sit down to express yourself, you end up saying things that you may not mean the way it sounds. You need to be a professional interviewee to say all the right things. Using the right words is an art a lot of my colleagues have mastered. I haven't. I don't want to say things that I regret doing. Shouting from rooftops doesn't suit me because that's what I'm accused of doing in my films.

You can no longer play the young romantic lead. What kind of role transition are you looking at?

I'm looking forward to doing Chandraprakash Diwedi's "Prithviraj-Sanjukta". I've got the script and it's fantastic. But the budget for that project is still not in place. Problem is, people aren't willing to touch good directors. I can't understand why! Unfortunately, my recent films haven't done well. As far as the market goes, I'm not a saleable proposition right now.

I don't think the market value of a star-actor like you would vary from Friday to Friday?

What has happened is the corporate houses have entered into the filmmaking business. They've no or little idea of the creative aspects of cinema. They can't tell a good script from bad. It's a dangerous situation. You've to do your own PR with them to convince them for a project, pamper them and flatter them.

I've spoken to dozens of these corporate houses. They've neither the confidence nor the knowledge to do any really worthy project, unless you're a big filmmaker or actor who has had a big hit last week or at the most, last month. Then they don't mind spending Rs.200-300 million without knowing what the subject is. But in a way the corporate sector is good because the quantity and variety of films have multiplied.

Don't you think this is the right time for you to produce your own films in right earnest?

Yeah. All my future projects will have my creative control completely. I'm also going into joint ventures with others. They'll handle the financial side of the film and I will handle the creative aspect of it.

I don't know how to handle money. But I've learnt my lessons. It's been a costly education for me (laughs). I'll sign a director and allow him to go on floors only when he gives me the full script at least three months before shooting.

Is your back fully healed?

It can never be fully cured. It's just something I've learnt to live with. The pain can come any time. Even a sneeze can bring it on. I don't even think about it. I'm cautious to the point of lying down if I feel even the slightest strain to the back.

Sunny Deol earlier was reckless with feelings and finances...

I know that many times my generosity has been interpreted as foolishness by the very people I helped. I can't change myself just to prove the cunning people wrong. But now I avoid people who can take advantage of me.

Have your financial problems ended?

They have. I'm on the road to recovery. Hopefully, things will get better. Earlier, I was in a real soup. I'm now getting my production house back on its feet. I'm tying up with K Sera Sera. After a couple of successes I'll feel more confident.

Would you like your sons to be actors?

My parents never forced me into movies. I'd like Bobby's and my children to also do what they want. I will guide them but I won't push them. At the moment they're too young to decide. They're interested in cinema. For now they're studying in Mumbai and doing well. I want them to be as educated as possible, so they don't make the same mistakes I did. Earning money isn't difficult. Holding on to it, is.

Cinema today seems to be changing?

Not necessarily for the better! Most films today are targeted at cities and overseas, not to the ticket paying working-class. I wouldn't call them 'masses'. I don't believe in this difference between masses and classes. But, yes, a certain class of viewers, which enjoyed heart and soul in movies, are left out.

I get really irritated by distinctions like art and commercial cinema. What's art cinema? Cinema that only a handful like! But if I like commercial films, they are art for me. These coinages are corny.

Any plans of directing another film?

Yes, I'll be directing quite a lot of films once I get into the groove. I'm working on a couple of scripts. My creative thoughts are simmering. I often find it difficult to listen to other people's ideas. That's why I need to exercise creative control over my films. From now on I'll be involved in every creative aspect of a film.

Do you think Bobby is handling his career well?

Very well. It's all about the right things happening at the right time. I don't advise him on what to do beyond a point. I can't force my ideas on him.

"We were brought up to believe in family values" - Sunny Deol

A father and son anywhere on this earth share a relationship that defies logic. At times there is passionate love and there are times when they draw their swords. But whatever the chemistry, the underlying love for each other is amply evident in every father-son relationship.

One of the premier families of Bollywood, the Deols also share a wonderful relationship. We feature Dharmendra and Sunny Deol's enviable relationship. And Sunny firmly credits it all to the value system ingrained in him by his parents. One of the primary fundas being that becoming and remaining a good human being is much more important than being a successful person.
Over to Sunny.

On values:
How important is it to be a good human being to succeed?
"See, you can only be what you are; you can't put up any facade for too long. I have been blessed to get parents who have rubbed on to their children a lot of values - moral, family and social. I used to wonder how my dad or mom could beat me or be so strict with me, but today I realize that all that has made me a better person!

I think that such things are very important regardless of which profession one chooses. It's important to be a good person and a good professional. For at the end of the day you have to look into the mirror and be happy! Of course, if you are happy being a bad person, that's fine! I have been brought up to believe that you are finally answerable only to yourself and to your conscience."

No fool:
But are not good people taken for a ride?
"'Yes," he answers. "But that doesn't mean that you should change. That's what dad says too. It happened a lot with dad, it's happened a lot with me, but it doesn't matter. I tell the person, 'I know what you are doing, and I am letting you do it. Don't think that I am a fool.'

Papa the great:
How does he rate his dad as an actor and as a human being then?
"To me, my dad is the best, and not because he's my dad. I mean, as a person I know that he's great, but as an actor too I know that's he's fabulous. He's done a Satyakam , he's done a Phool Aur Patthar , an Ayee Milan Ki Bela , a Bandini , a Chupke Chupke , a Sholay , a Mera Gaon Mera Desh , and a Hukumat . So he's done all kind of films and they have been successful. Other actors have not been able to be equally successful in different moulds. And that's because he would portray the characters right and get into them. It was only after the '80s and '90s that he could get good directors and subjects, so he was limited in his work.

To me, I would rate him as the best actor we ever had, better than even Dilip-saab , Amitabh Bachchan or anybody else, because I would like to see them do the variety of roles that he has done with so much justification. It was never Dharmendra the star doing a role, my dad was always portraying the specific character. With the others, it was the star-image that dominated the character. Even today, I think that the audience is dying to see him again in a good role and that's basically why I am making the film that stars all of us. You see, for six years I have been trying to convince filmmakers of making a good film with my dad, but all that they want to do is take the easy way out and make teenybopper films."

Out of sync:
Magazines nowadays do not carry features on his father on the grounds that he 'doesn't sell'. What does he think of that?

"You see, these people who are passing these judgments sitting in their rooms are the people who party around in society and they need something trendy to talk about. They are totally out of sync with what the masses want to know, whom the masses love. So nobody knows what the masses want, because these people want to be in their own glory which is within them. That's the reason why such things happen - it's so stupid!

My father has been loved by the masses for over 40 years now! I consider myself lucky to have even reached half-way. And I think that it's all been possible only because of the way Bobby and I have been raised from childhood."

Sunny Deol
Vijayta Films And Sunny Deol Complete 25 Years!

MovieTalkies.com, 26 October 2007

How does it feel to see two major events in your family, your banner and you completing twenty-five years as a star-actor?
It gives me and everyone at home a great feeling of satisfaction and contentment to be blessed with all the things that we have achieved. But we don't believe in sitting back, we are men in action all the time, you know. We have now got all together to give Vijayta Films a new life, add our individual achievement to the common goal of reaching one common goal which is the only thing on our minds today. We have always believed in giving our best. We are trying all our ways and all out ways to better our own best.

How do you propose to bring about this big change you are planning and working for?
We too have decided to go the corporate way, but not the way the corporate are exactly working today. We have our own plans. Like we don't have to run after stars with bags full of money. We have four big stars at home, my father, myself, Bobby and my talented cousin Abhay. We don't have to spend money on stars which is the main plus point on the corporate now in the game. We don't have a major problem with money too. We have our own resources. We have banks who are willing to back us, equity and other ways of generating money to make our films.

How has your corporate, the deol's corporate like I would like to call it planned to be different from the corporate who are ruling the business of film entertainment today?
We are not going to just show our money power. We strongly believe that money is not the only thing that matters in the making of film. Money is very important, but money is not the only thing. That is what most of the corporate today believe, I feel. We believe that content matters, more than all the crores. We have worked out a definite plan to see that money is used in the right way, only to make quality film, films that are entirely to our liking and which we feel will appeal to the masses. We have been working on a number of scripts, hard-bound scripts as we call them. We will only go into production once our scripts is ready.

It seems that you have made a thorough study of the market and the way films are made these days?
I have to. There is no other way to carry on if you have to stay in the business and work in the healthy manner. This is the best time for making good films. The market has grown. The numbers of people watching films have grown which is the big advantage for the filmmakers like us. The multiplexes are playing their own part in bringing in an audience which were keeping away people from seeing films. There is money coming in from all kinds of sources but I feel this is a phase. It will last for a while or may be longer but ultimately it is going to be a case of the survival of the fittest. There will just be a couple of big companies which will rule the industry like they are in Hollywood. The others will have to find their own way or give up. The coming together of a few serious filmmakers will help in bringing the industry together and find that sense of unity which has always been the cause of many of our problems. One of the main problems I think which can be tackled on a war path if we are all united is the crippling disease of piracy which is slowly killing the industry.

What do you think about the way the corporate are functioning today?
From the little I know I think the corporate and all their men in charge must know the ways the films are actually made. They should know how and where and why their money is being spent. How can you run the business when you don't know the business you are dealing with your self?

What will be the major difference in your corporate plans?
First of all we are all in the business for years. We think about films 24x7. As I told we are going to check out and double check all matters concerning a film. The first condition like I have told you is the content. All the other things will follow what the content demands. That is going to be the strong point of every film made by Vijayta Films. The script comes first, then the casting and straight into the shoot.

Who is going to be the boss of the company?
No one is going to be the boss. We are all going to work together. All of us have got fully equipped to face any challenge in any sector of film making. So we will be running the company together. Whoever is associated with the film made by anyone of us will be in complete charge of the project. And we will take turns to supervise matter in general whenever we are free in films where we are not involved. It is all in the family. There are no major problems and even if they arise at any time they can be sorted out easily with just a meeting of minds, which are basically one.

How do you plan to take your first big step in this new inning?
We have already lined up first four films. The first, "Champoo" will go on the floor on October 21. It is being directed by Kabir Kaushik and has Bobby in lead. Bobby is the head and so he will control all that goes into the making of the film. We will start with a five day shooting schedule which will be like a warming up exercise for the unit and go full steam ahead and we hope to release the film in May or June 2008. Then there is "Man" being co-directed by me and Neeraj Patahk, the writer of "Apne" who makes his debut as a director. Soon after "Man" we will have "Masters" starring all the three of us again after "Apne" and it will also be directed by Anil Sharma. And we have "Chhoo Mantar" to be directed by Rumi Jafeery staring Bobby and me. We have already worked out all the plans to make these four films and we will start thinking of future film when we know that we are making headway with the films we have on floor. The momentum will not stop. Vijayta Films will not stop in giving its best in all the films it makes.

There is a big difference in the way films were made and there is a big difference now. How are you going to face this new challenge?
We are aware of the changes and are preparing to face any challenge. We have a combination of both the old school and the new school working as one team towards a common goal. I think this kind of combination will work very well.

It also means that all the Deol's will be busy working only in films made by your banner. What about working for other banners and filmmakers?
We have freedom to do outside films provided they don't clash with the interest of our own films. Like I m doing a film "Right Yaaa Wrong" being made by Subhash Ghai because I can manage my time to do a film. My father and Bobby have same freedom to work with other filmmakers but we all will have to give first priority to our own films.

So the industry can expect more adventure from the Deol's who have always been known as an adventurous family?
We are trying our best and that is our only moto, our mission. We are also adopting discipline, dedication and dignity to the work we do as our guiding forces. We have to try our very best to live up to the expectations of every one. This is possible if we stick to our goals and work honestly and sincerely. I don't think anything can or should go wrong with these values in mind and we will all try our best to keep the banner founded by my father flying high and flying higher.

Are you satisfied with the track record of Vijayta Films?
There is nothing to be satisfied or regret. We have made seven films in twenty five years-"Betaab", "Arjun", "Ghayal", "Barsat", "Indian", "Dillagi"(incidentally directed by me),"Shaheed Bhagat Singh" and "Socha Na Tha" which was the last film made in 2005. All these films helped in establishing Vijayta Films as a banner. We are proud of what we have done and hope to work to be proud of in the future too.

What about your own standing as an actor after twenty five years?
I have worked according to my own set principles. I have just done sixty films in all these years while others have done hundreds and god bless them, but I am happy the way I am. The one thing is that I keep on working hard with every film I do. An actor cannot afford to sit back and revel in and live on his past glory. He has to working harder without a pause.

Do you think Vijayta Film is what it is because of the tremendous goodwill your father has earned for him self?
Of course, it is all because of him. We are all we are because of him. Our banner is what because of him. And whatever we do in the future will also be all because of him. He has been a pillar of strength and will always be. He has been the guiding force behind Vijayta Films without whom it is difficult to imagine what any of us would be or if whatever we have done could be possible.

Mine is a very touching character - Sunny Deol

Courtesy: IndiaFM
May 12, 2005

Jo Bole So Nihaal brings a fresh dab to Sunny Deol's mundane action hero image. Against all expectations he plays a comic role in this upcoming movie. Never seen before gullible village yokel is Sunny's character 'Nihaal Singh'. In a very candid and chatty mood Sunny speaks about the film, his breakthrough in comedy and his experience with the newcomers.

What is your character in the movie?

His only mission is to take revenge of the insult that he has faced in his village. He is a havaldar and he commits some mistake and to undo it, he has to travel to US, which he has never done before. Besides that he doesn't even know to speak English and in such situation how he completes his mission is the story of the movie.

You have been a sardar in so many movies before - you being Punjabi yourself how does it feel?

I enact the role according to the character. My background being from Punjab makes it easy to get into the character that is Punjabi because I know the atmosphere and about their feelings, so in such a case a person can perform better.

What is the genre of this film?

I would not be able to comment on this... like the promos are showing it is an entertainer, its not a serious film. Even though there is action in the movie but it is kept within the limits of an entertainer and it doesn't affect the overall feel of the film.

You have had an action hero image. How come you are venturing into comedy?

This is what the media labels, sometimes they call me an action hero, sometimes they label me as a patriotic hero, and now they think I am planning to venture into comedy. Media doesn't say that we are doing a good job. They just stamp you and treat you like you cannot do anything beyond that genre, so I don't like this labeling thing that media does.

Is this an angry young man character like the posters show?

The character may appear angry but he is also very gullible, people take undue advantage of his simplicity, which pains him.

Why do we see less of you on screen these days?

For a year I was on bed because of my back problem. Hence I have not been able to do films. This was the only film I have been able to complete.

Tell us about the comedy of the film?

Comedy of this film is not like someone cracks a joke and others stand behind him and laugh. The character is comic and the situations are comic. Mine is a very touching character, you will be able to relate with the character, you will laugh and cry with him.

How is your equation with Rahul Rawail?

My first film was with Rahul. So we share a bond and it shows in all the films that we have done. All the roles he has given me have been fantastic and very different.

What about your equation with the producer Mr. Pachisia?

We have done a lot of films till today. Since Ziddi this is our fourth film together like I always say he is a very good producer, he has passion for the movies and doesn't hold back anything.

Except you the rest of the cast is new, how was it working with them?

Everybody is new at one point but the youngsters these days are not camera shy, they do not panic in any situation and that confidence shows on the screen.

Tell us about Kamal Khan, this is his debut?

He has been very good in the film. He has got a very good personality and it comes across very well on the screen and as an actor he has done a very good job.

What do you feel about the music of the film?

The music is very good; Anand Raj Anand has done a very good job, it's very entertaining.

I want to be an outstanding director" : Sunny Deol

Friday, August 10, 2007

Despite a series of flops at the box-office in the recent past, Sunny Deol has reason to rejoice following the critics' verdict on family drama Apne and for his role of a Pakistani freelancer in the forthcoming Kafila. Now, the actor wants to try his hand at direction. He talks about Kafila bridging the gap between India and Pakistan, his experience of working in it and his aspirations in the field of direction.

What did you like the most in Amtouz Mann's film Kafila?
I liked the story which is based on the problem of illegal immigration. These days, people move to foreign lands with the help of visas. This results in intellectual immigration. At the same time, there are others who migrate illegally in search for a better life. But they end up residing in the foreign country like thieves.

Have you ever met a person who had migrated illegally?
No, but then, playing a character doesn't require meeting the persons on whom the characters are based. As an actor, it's my duty to make the job of the director easy.

Tell us about your character in the film.
I play a Pakistani in the film, who, like a freelancer, roams through Afganistan, Rajasthan, Bulgeria, Russia and other places, with a group of nomads.

What's the reason behind playing a Pakistani character in the film?
(Laughs) Yeah... it's quite an interesting question but you have to ask it to my director.

It's said that by playing a Pakistani character you want to please the Pakistani audiences?
I don't want to please anyone. I'm an actor and it's my job to portray every kind of character. I don't know who is spreading such rumours about me. Maybe the people who are doing this want to give me some message.

There were one Bulgarian and two Pakistani actors in the film. How was your experience of working with them?
I enjoyed working with them. I would like to mention that all of them were newcomers. So, they had the liveliness and enthusiasm, and an intention to learn new things.

Is the film going to be released in Pakistan too?
So far, whenever we have interacted with Pakistan it has been either for banduk or for business. It's a pleasure for me to state that nowadays it is more for business. And it is a part of our movie business to get our films released in Pakistan. It's better to forget the past and move ahead.

It is said that the completion of Kafila took a long time?

Who says so? There's nothing like that. And even if there was any delay, it was not due to me. If people still believe otherwise, it's fine by me.

Your last film Apne couldn't leave a mark at the box-office?
Apne couldn't prove itself at the box-office, but film critics, as well as the audience, liked it very much. My dream came true.

Why are you doing very few films these days?
Yeah, I have reduced my working hours because of my health. Nevertheless, I have played small roles in several films in the last two or three years. I had undergone three operations for my backache and in that situation, my first priority had to be my health.

We heard that you are going to direct films?
Yeah, we are going to shoot four films in the coming year. The first one is titled Man, in which I am assisted by Neeraj Pathak. I'm also playing the lead role in it, but the leading lady has not been decided yet. The second film is Chamku named after the lead character of the film, played by Bobby. It will hit the floor within a month and a half. Kabir Sadanand, the director of Sahar, will assist me in that film.

Will the three of you Deols come together again after Apne?
Absolutely. It'll be in the film Masters, directed by Apne director Anil Sharma. People actually complained to us that we have made them cry in Apne. So, keeping that in mind, we have decided to make them laugh in Masters.

Your father, Dharmendra, was supposed to publish his poetry (shayaree). Please tell us about that.
It's true that he has penned his experiences, both on and off screen, in his shayaree. He's going to publish them very soon.

Do you enjoy writing too?
It's difficult giving my experiences a written form. Maybe after reaching his (Dharmendra's) age, I shall also start writing. As of now, it's tough to comment on it.

What would you like to do besides acting in the near future?
I want to be an outstanding director. I have a dream project that I wish to accomplish. But it's better to keep mum about it right now as it's too early to speak on the subject.

I’ve Had Clashes with Santoshi and Rahul,” says Sunny Deol
[Interview by Faridoon Shahryar]
Monday, September 04, 2006

“I’ve had clashes with Rahul (Rawail), Santoshi (Rajkumar), but not with Sachin,” said Sunny Deol at the recently held Press Meet of his forthcoming action adventure film ‘Naksha’ co-starring Vivek Oberoi, Sameera Reddy and Jackie Shroff. Sunny hasn’t had a big release since the controversial ‘Jo Bole So Nihal’ and except for a brief role in ‘Teesri Aankh’ there hasn’t been much to write home about the He-Man who’s delivered big hits like ‘Ghayal, ‘Ghatak’ and ‘Gadar’. To give credit to him, Sunny Pa Ji looks cool in his new hair cut and his cool demeanour is only adding to his Style-Quotient. Over to this IndiaGlitz exclusive:

Your last big film was ‘Jo Bole So Nihaal’, so why this big gap?
I was not well for a long time so I couldn’t do a film. And when you start a film it takes a year to complete the film. That’s why I had a big gap. Now, every three months I will be having a release. From now on I just wish to work, work and work.

What are your thoughts on the music of your forthcoming film ‘Naksha’?
The music is very foot tapping. It’s my type, the dancing type. I enjoyed it a lot. My personal favourite is ‘Jat Yamla’ because I enjoyed doing it. Even in the promos of the film you can make out that I am enjoying it.

Is it a typical Sunny Deol kind of action film?
No..It’s a typical Shahrukh K….K….K…film…(Laughs) I don’t know what typical film is. It’s an action film, it’s an adventure film and I am sure everyone will like it. At the end of the day the audience won’t watch a film because of what I say or don’t say. People will watch the film if they like the promos or else they won’t watch it.

The director Sachin Bajaj is new…
The director is new but you won’t feel while you watch the film that it’s made by a new director. We all had a great time. It was team work, like a picnic. The adventure film requires different locations and the conditions are such that one has to support each other, so it was a family kind of atmosphere. I like working with new directors because there’s lots of honesty and earnestness in them.

Any clashes of viewpoint with the new director?
I’ve had these clashes with Rahul (Rawail), Santoshi (Rajkumar) but not here….(Bursts into laughter).

How would you describe your role?
It’s an adventure film where I play a Forest Officer. Since I am the forest officer I know the terrain of the place. My step brother is hunting for something and I am not bothered till mother comes in and asks me to help him. Then there are bad elements, different locations and it starts unfolding gradually.

How’s the chemistry between you, Vivek and Sameera Reddy?
The chemistry has been very good and that’s why we’ve enjoyed doing the film. It’s when the chemistry is good that’s when a film turns out to be good.

Something about the Stunts in the film
Since the film requires action, it has to be done accordingly. Action is part of the scenes of the film. The action coordinator was very good as he ensured the safety measures very well. The danger element is still there because in spite of the safety measure, anything can happen. We went through the mountains, the rapids in the river…The experts lectured us about the dangers involved. Their cautious approach made us more fearful….But at the end of it all everything went well. It was great fun.

What was the most challenging stunt in Naksha?
It’s not a matter of challenging or not challenging. If there are stunts that a person can do, then one does it and if I don’t want to do something then I don’t do anything of that sort.

How adventurous are you in real life?
I am a sportsperson and I like adventure. I like mountains more than the sea. So, whenever I am in mountains, I go hiking.

We’ll produce our own films: Sunny Deol
August 23rd, 2007

After delivering a hit with Apne, the Deols have decided to become a self-contained film producing concern with elder son Sunny getting again into direction years after Dillagi.

“We’ll be consolidating our company. I’ll be directing a film shortly,” Sunny told IANS in an interview.

Eventually, the actor wants his father Dharmendra and brother Bobby to be part of one production house.

“The world is going global, and for us to do so we need to work as one family. So, yes, we Deols want to get together.”

The big brother is quite protective about Bobby. He wants Bobby, who has lately become enormously prolific as an actor, to have the comfort of a home production at his disposal.

“These so-called friends and well-wishers of his who make films with him take him for a ride. But I’ve understood how these games work. And I don’t want him to go through all this.

“Why even in Anil Sharma’s Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyo Bobby didn’t get his dues. I was too busy at that time to look into it. By the time I became aware of Bobby’s role, it was too late.”

Sunny has realised family comes first… and last.

Anil Sharma is planning another film for us. We’ll get directors. But we’ll produce the films. So we aren’t taken for a ride-Sunny”Anil Sharma is planning another film for us. We’ll get directors. But we’ll produce the films. So we aren’t taken for a ride.”

He says his period of tumult and transition is over.

“I’m much calmer now. I realise doing films isn’t enough. Both critics and the masses have to love your work. With our family film Apne I think we’ve got the formula right. It was the kind of film I wanted to see. So that’s the kind of films I’d like to make.”

Throwing light on his next family film, Sunny said: ” Apne was an emotional film. Now we’d like to a comedy together. Meanwhile, I’m ready to co-direct a film called Man with Neeraj Pathak.”

Promoting new talent has always been a passion for Sunny.

“I like to work with new talent. While Bobby is only interested in being an actor, I’ve been involved with everything from editing to screenwriting right from the time of my debut film Betaab.

“But once they become established these people who start off with me move away to what they consider better prospects. But we Deols will continue to nurture new talent. I’ve many ideas. And I need talent to implement those ideas.”

Sunny wants to make realistic films.

“But still larger-than-life, to go with my image… I see my career as having many curves. Yes, I’ve made many mistakes, though neglecting my career to look after my brother Bobby isn’t one of them. I’ve been too trusting and emotional. Even now I trust people around me. But I don’t have blind faith. I won’t spend money on films with my eyes closed.”

Post-Gadar - Ek Prem Katha (2001), the actor didn’t enjoy much success at the box office. Most of his recent releases like Kaafila, Naksha and Jo Bole So Nihaal, turned turtle at the box office.

Sunny, who also produced Dillagi(1999), says the mistakes as a producer and as an actor have been a learning experience.

“Life is the biggest teacher. Today I’m very clear about what I want. All people creating cinema around me have to be as disciplined as me. Except Bobby, all of us wake up early and get to work.”

“So far we’ve all been just doing our work and letting it speak for us. But when we did Apne we Deols decided that it’s time we also spoke for our work.”
