He was unperturbed by his sons Sunny and Bobby joining the industry, he was vocal about his displeasure regarding his daughter Esha's choice of profession.
He has recently become active in politics. He won a position as a Member of Parliament in the 2004 general elections, from Bikaner in Rajasthan, on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket. During his election campaign, he made an ironic remark that he should be elected Dictator Perpetuus to teach "basic etiquette that democracy requires" for which he was severely criticized.
Awards and recognitions
In 1997, Dharmendra won a Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to Indian Cinema over many years. While receiving the award from Dilip Kumar and his wife, Dharmendra grew emotional and remarked that he never received any Filmfare award in the "Best Actor" category despite having worked in so many successful films -- nearly a hundred popular movies. He was glad that his contributions had finally been recognized. Speaking on the occasion Dilip Kumar commenting on the legendary handsome facial features of Dharmendra had said,"Whenever I get to meet with God Almighty I will set before him my only complaint-why did You not make me as handsome as Dharmendra?"

Three is family
Vikas Hotwani
Monday, May 21, 2007 23:06 IST

It’s an in-house affair as yesteryear superstar Dharmendra teams up with sons Sunny and Bobby for the first time.

He’s one of the most handsome men to ever grace the silver screeen and despite his different preoccupations now, Dharmendra’s fan following, even today, is probably more than both his sons put together. At this year’s IFFA, the still Garam Dharam will be taking home the award for Outstanding Achievment in Indian Cinema. After Hours caught the three hunky Deol men in a candid mood:

Dharmendra

Parent speak: Parents spend their entire lives making sure they fulfil every wish of their children. Parents live for their children and the children, in turn, for their children. Even when parents demand something that seems illogical, it comes from their never ending love and care for their kids. There is a kid present in parents as well which needs pampering and attention.

Sunny is more of an introvert. He hides his emotions. He is a very sober person. But he has immense love for his family and people close to him. Bobby, on the other hand, being the youngest in the family, rightfully takes everything as his own. He has a comparatively lighter hearted approach and is much more carefree in life. Sunny is more serious.

Sunny Deol

Daddy cool: I think dad is the best person and undoubtedly the best actor of his time and even today. I feel he is a legend in himself. However, I also feel he hasn’t got the true recognition or status that he deserves. He’s entitled to much, much more than what he has actually received till date.

Bobby Deol

Home truths: Having your family as a support system in your life is very important. Lot of families are breaking up to get more independence or to pursue a career. However, in the end, you need to come back where you belong. Dad is very humble person in spite of the fan following he has. The secret is the way his parents have brought him up and the way he has brought up his children.

Dharmendra speaks about the fracas at Some Place Else, Hema Malini and politics...

So, what went amiss at Some Place Else?

I don’t know the details. The two directors Sunil Hingorani and Amin Merchant do not get along. My name was unnecessarily dragged into the controversy. It has adversely affected my business and public image (pauses).

Some Place Else is often identified as your restaurant...

I am not involved in the day-to-day operations of Some Place Else. I am just an investor. I lent my name to the place out of sheer goodwill. I wish someone had spoken with me before writing the story.

Our apologies; but why has Sunil Hingorani kicked up such a lot of fuss over the incident? Isn’t he your good friend Arjun Hingorani’s son?

Well, I wouldn’t like to play the blame game. Arjun is still my friend. He has played an important role in my life in the film industry.

We were pleasantly surprised when you visited Hema Malini on the sets of Raj Kanwar’s upcoming film Sadiyaan at Karjat?

(Laughs) Our relationship is very sacred to me. We are very close to each other. But, we choose not to talk about it. In fact, this is the first time that I am speaking about us so openly.

What about your fitness regime? Are you still as health conscious as you were before?

Oh yes, I am the first one to get up in my house. I wake up at 5 a.m. and do bench press for an hour.

Have you given up on alcohol completely? Your friends don’t push it under your nose?

(Smiles) Well, I tell them that ‘if you love me genuinely, don’t offer’. I used to drink a lot at one point of time.

What about your stint in politics?

I have not enjoyed my stint in politics. The politicians say that India is our motherland. But do we really look after it like our mother? I, for one, have done my best in Bikaner.

We hear that Vijeta Films is being revived?

Yes. We did very badly and had three to four consecutive flops. Now, we are concentrating on reviving it. We will start Chamkoo, a film which will star Bobby, very soon following which, Anil Sharma will make a film titled Masters with Bobby, Sunny and me. Also, there’s a Tigmanshu Dhulia film where I play one of the main characters.

What about your forthcoming films?

My next film will be Har Pal with Preity Zinta, where I play an alcoholic father. Preity plays my daughter who tries to cure me of my drinking habit, but I don’t listen. It’s an emotional film and was a very satisfying experience.

Dharmendra replaces Amitabh Bachchan in Har Pall

By Subhash K. Jha, September 26, 2007 - 14:16 IST

They've always been terrific co-stars. Now they're in a position where they can exchange roles …comfortably.

Amitabh Bachchan was slated to play a key role in Jahnu Barua's second Hindi film Har Pall which has Preity Zinta and Shiney Ahuja in the lead. In fact, Barua had even announced the indefatigable superstar's name in an interview. However, the dates proved to be the culprit. And the Big B had to bow out. Now it’s Dharmendra who has stepped into the part.

Says Preity, "I've just completed a stunning film with Amitji entitled The Last Lear . It would've been great fun to work with him again. But Dharamji is adorable. I've done so many films with Sunny and Bobby. But I've never worked with Dharamji before. It's an experience worth cherishing."

I am not enjoying politics: Dharmendra
[Interview by Liz Mathew]
Monday, March 21, 2005

Actor-turned-MP Dharmendra, who has often been criticized for skipping parliament and not showing up in his constituency, says his actions speak louder than words.

"I am doing my job. I do not believe in asking questions or raising issues (in parliament) to be noticed by the media and other MPs," the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) politician and onetime cult hero told IANS in an interview inside Parliament House.

Dharmendra's long absence from his constituency in Bikaner, Rajasthan after winning the elections in May last year has drawn much adverse comment from constituents. He is also rarely spotted in parliament.

But Dharmendra justifies his poor Lok Sabha attendance by saying: "I find the queries (during question hour) meaningless and the answers disappointing. I would rather spend time getting things done for my voters."

According to him, he has been meeting central ministers in person to put up the demands for his constituency. "Some ministers have become good friends. They are very cooperative and meet all my requests. Ministers like Santosh Mohan Dev (heavy industries) are friends," he says.

Like choosing films, Dharmendra has probably concluded that one must also be selective in attending parliament.

"I check the list of business in the morning and come to the house when there is some solid development," says the veteran actor who made a debut in films with "Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere" in 1960.

Dharmendra remained a popular hero for almost three decades before taking to character roles.

Born to Dharam Singh Deol in Phagwara, Punjab, in 1935, Dharmendra took to action films along with romantic roles early in his career. He joined the BJP in March last year ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

Does he enjoy life as a politician? "Acting was enjoyment. It's (politics) a new field and I don't find myself enjoying much. I would rather see it as work," he says candidly.

And if politics is work, Dharmendra seems to be tired already. "I may not contest the next election. But (for) this time, I will work for my constituency."

Dharmendra, dressed in an olive green shirt and light-colored trousers, is evasive when asked if he feels jealous of the media attention that wife and Rajya Sabha member Hema Malini gets.

"All human beings want attention. Of course I have had a lot (of attention) in the past 40 years. It's quite natural," he says.

Despite the brickbats of late, Dharmendra recognizes the role of the media in his success.

"I proudly say that I am a product of the media. I would not have become an actor if Filmfare (magazine) was not there. I owe my success to the media," he says.

Dharmendra wanted to make a sequel to Sholay

Come Friday and Indian celluloid would for the first time see the three Deol men on screen in Anil Sharma’s Apne. The film, which is a story of a father and his two sons, has already generated a lot of hype due to the casting.

In the capital to promote his film, veteran actor Dharmendra talked about Apne, life, his family and Bollywood.

Excerpts:

On acting:
I have always been an emotional person and love has been something that has been a part of my life since my childhood. It’s in my genes. In fact, many a time I say that my brain is also my heart.

I’ve never taken my profession as a profession. Acting is beloved to me and I’ve always loved acting. Though I had been away from the scene for the last 10 years, I always wanted to return. Humain to bas yeh hee aata hai.

On Apne:
Apne is a family film. I take it as my comeback film. People can watch the film with their family and would love it. The film has a strong traditional concept, which makes the subject even more interesting.

Anil Sharma has put in a lot of effort in the film, which made us play our parts effortlessly.

We don’t want to work with people who have big egos and attitudes. We’re simple people and therefore we want to work with people like us.Also, I think that today ego is a big disease and is affecting everyone. We don’t want to work with people who have big egos and attitudes. We’re simple people and therefore we want to work with people like us. Anil Sharma is like family and most of all, he’s a brilliant director. I’ve always believed that when you make a film it’s not ‘I’ but ‘we' that works for the film. You have to work as a team.

And I vouch that Apne will touch your heart. Please take your hankies with you.

Why Apne?
There’s nothing like show business. I was dying to be in front of the camera. I was missing being seen on the big screen. Besides, it was also my desire to work with my sons but we never got such a beautiful subject as Apne, which gave all three of us well-etched characters.

It's not that we were not offered films but then the role was not good. Would you have wanted me to play Dara Singh’s part in Dillagi?

On enacting reality on reel:
I’ve never forgotten my roots and the place I belong to. I’ve always been very emotional and that’s what shows on the screen. So it was not difficult to play father to my sons. In fact, I loved working with them. And at the end of the day we’re all playing characters on the screen.

On working with family
I think the public gets curious to see your film if you are working with your family. I remember I was very curious to see Raj Kapoor’s films, which had his family members in them.

Also, I think star power definitely works. I used to wait to watch Madhubala and Dilip Kumar’s films when I was young.

In fact I wanted to bring the Veeru-Basanti jodi together for a sequel to Sholay. I had even thought of getting Veeru married to Basanti and taking the story from there. Favourite films of Sunny and Bobby:
Bobby: Barsaat; he was so charming in that film with his long hair. Though I hate his long hair, it looked good in Barsaat. Main kainchi lekar daudta hoon uske peeche (I chase him with a pair of scissors)

Sunny: Betaab, Ghayal, Arjun, Damini

On working with Hema Malini again:
I would love to work with her again. In fact I wanted to bring the Veeru-Basanti jodi together for a sequel to Sholay. I had even thought of getting Veeru married to Basanti and taking the story from there.

In the film, Basanti and I have two kids. One is raised by Jaya’s character and grows up to be like Veeru (played by Dharmendra) and the other, raise by us, grows up to be like Jai(played by Amitabh Bachchan). I wanted Bobby and Abhishek to play them.

But there are so many 'Shamu ke Sholays' that are coming up today that I dropped the idea.

On working with Esha
I would love to work with Esha, but then there has to be a very strong subject which makes us work together, not something frivolous.

Sunny can drink an ocean of sorrows: Dharmendra

Kolkata, May 28, 2007

He's 72. Actor, producer, member of Parliament, father, husband, grandfather, Dharmendra has played all the roles.
He shares screen space with sons Sunny and Bobby in Anil Sharma's Apne. We catch up with the veteran actor for a quick q and a.

So is Dharamji making a comeback?

Sometimes, I feel I was never gone. When I see the way people react on meeting me, I feel I've always been there. Every individual knows his capacity, I'm no exception.
But I have always kept a very low profile, not gone ahead and spoken about myself in the press and all that. I'm sure one day people will realise that I was always there and all my wishes will be fulfilled with just one film.

Do you think your low profile has brought on controversies, the latest is that people of your constituency are cribbing that you have done nothing for them…

I'll submit a detailed report soon on what I have done for the people of Bikaner, things which they were dying for. Some major projects will be over soon, but I'm doing more for them. I have access to the ministers since they know me as Dharmendra and hence it's easier for me to get my work done.
I think your work should speak for you. My job is to do the best for my people and I don't care if I don't get praise for that. I'm doing my duty and God is watching. But I must tell you, politicians play dirty games. I never wanted to be in politics but again, it is my destiny .

In Apne, you're acting with both your sons.

Emotionally I feel very high about that. We finally got a very good script for which the three of us could work together. I hope the audience likes it.

How was the experience?

The father in me is always there and will always remain. But along with that, I'm also an actor, and that's where the success of an actor lies - to come out of the shell the moment you‘re in front of the camera. More than my sons and I, this film will leave an impact on people. When you see the movie you will feel elated.

Tell us about the Deol bonding… you guys still live together.

People keep telling me that it's very unusual.. but you know what, my sons feel very secure with us. We would feel very lonely without them.
The world is becoming so mechanical. People forget their relations and are only running after money, money and money . Their hearts have become brains. But mera dimaag abhi bhi dil hai.

How were Sunny and Bobby as kids?

Every person is blessed with a peculiar nature. Sunny's always been an introvert. I tell him to speak out, but he is so emotional. He can drink an ocean of sorrows.
Bobby is the youngest in the family. He was born to get much from everyone and he is getting it.

Now on a different note, Ram Gopal Varma is remaking Sholay. What's your take on that?

Half the war is won with the title Sholay. If you want to do something bigger than Sholay, why the hell are you keeping the name? They should have given it a different name. I still pray that they make a greater film. And more so because my younger brother Jai is in it.

BJP’S KNEE-JERK CALL TO DHARAMJI
After first getting its bed-ridden Malegaon MP to fly to Delhi for the trust vote, BJP is now getting Dharmendra, who has just undergone knee surgery in the US, to rush back
Back to Section Stories Posted On Monday, July 21, 2008

After having first decided to air-lift an MP immobilised by an accident to New Delhi for the crucial July 22 trust vote in Parliament, the Bharatiya Janata Party has got actor Dharmendra, its MP from Bikaner, to fly in from the United States for the make-or-break vote despite the fact that he has just undergone a knee surgery.

And if the BJP's top leadership is to be believed, Dharam Paaji is going to live up to his reputation of being 'Mr Dependable.' Though it was earlier pretty much ruled out that he'd be able to make it for the trust vote, the actor has decided not to let his party down and will arrive in New Delhi this morning.

Dharmendra, who has invited flak in the past for not visiting his constituency frequently enough, recently underwent a knee surgery in Los Angeles, and recent media reports have said there is no question of him being present in Parliament to vote against the UPA.

However, BJP's national spokesperson Prakash Javdekar told this paper on Sunday evening, "Dharmendra will arrive in Delhi today and will definitely take part in the trust vote."

Though Dharmendra himself was not available for comment, sources said he had earlier called up party president Rajnath Singh from his hospital bed in the US and promised that he would try to be present for the trust vote if his doctors allowed him to leave.

However, the BJP, which has not even given Harishchandra Chavan, its Malegaon MP now bed-ridden in a Nashik hospital the option of staying away, reportedly made it clear to Dharmendra that he'd have to make it as it was vital to make every vote count. Dr Pradip Bhosle, head of orthopaedic department at KEM said a patient who has undergone knee surgery needs at least one month of rest and physiotherapy. "I do not know how serious Dharamji's case is, but if it is serious, he will need rest," he said.

Meanwhile, ahead of the Parliament session, Javdekar said that all was fine with NDA, and all its MPs had "had a sumptuous dinner together" on Sunday evening.

Dharmendra recuperating in Mumbai; to leave for Los Angeles Monday

From correspondents in Maharashtra, India, 10:03 PM IST

After attending the trust vote in parliament, veteran actor and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Dharmendra is recuperating at his home here before he leaves for Los Angeles where he underwent a knee surgery.

According to a close friend, the actor's knee problem is a consequence of the dare-devil stunts he used to do in films in his heydays.

The BJP MP from Bikaner in Rajasthan had to rush to India from Los Angeles early this week to attend the crucial trust vote faced by the Manmohan Singh government. He flew down to New Delhi July 22 to cast his vote against the government, according to the party diktat.

'The actor's advancing age is also a factor, but the disorder in his knees aggravated mainly as a consequence of the dare-devil stunts he used to do in films. He used to do his stunts like falling off a running horse, jumping out of a speeding vehicle himself. Only later he started using a body double,' said the family friend.

Dharmendra had knee transplants on both his legs and is still on a wheel chair. His doctor had accompanied him from the US.

His eldest son, Sunny Deol, who is now in London, will join his father in Los Angeles, where he will take further treatment for his knees.

The BJP MP from Bikaner in Rajasthan had to rush to India from Los Angeles early this week to attend the crucial trust vote faced by the Manmohan Singh government. He flew down to New Delhi July 22 to cast his vote against the government, according to the party diktat.

Shiney’s best compliment
31 Jul, 2008 06:00 am ISTlReena Thapar Kapoor/INDIATIMES MOVIES

Shiney Ahuja’s fitness trainer has put him on a strict diet. The man has to follow a low carb diet. “Honestly, I don’t care much about the appearance part of it. It’s more important for an actor to concentrate on honing his skills,” says Shiney.

But in tinsel town, its not just about good acting. Brawns and good looks play a major factor too. And Shiney is just learning about it.

Recently, the Gangster man ran into the original Punjab da puttar Dharmendra. Apparently, the conversation between the two men was about food, workout, work and conduct. “That man is an institution in himself. We’ve worked together in Metro but we didn’t have any scenes together,” he recalls.

Dharmendra’s daughter Esha is sharing screen space with Shiney in Hijack . “I was completely taken aback when he complimented me for my work in my films.” But what shook Shiney was when Dharam told him that he reminds him of his hey days. “I’ve grown up hearing stories about Dharam ji ’s good looks and fan following. A compliment coming from him made my day,” says an ecstatic Shiney.

Dhramendra’s surprist visit on the sets of Hijack didn’t surprise Shiney but it super surprised his daughter as well. According o the unit members, the He-man got loads of home made Punjai food for his daughter. “Since I was invited for lunch in Esha’s vanity van, I got to taste the yummy food.”

First the compliment and then some desi food, looks like Shiney really couldn’t have asked for more.

Dharmendra hopes 'Chamku' will be as entertaining as 'Apne'

Mumbai, July 30 : Legendary actor Dharmendra, who along with his two sons Sunny and Bobby Deol attended the music launch of their soon to be released film 'Chamku', hopes their new offering will be as entertaining as 'Apne'.

"We are proud to present 'Chamku' as our new film and I hope it entertains the audience as 'Apne' did," Dharmendra told reporters on the sidelines of the function here Tuesday.

"Vijayta Films has always stood for giving the audience wholesome entertainment, be it 'Betaab', 'Barsaat', 'Socha Naa Tha' or 'Apne'. All our films were accepted warm heartedly by the audience and I accept the same for 'Chamku'," he added.

Monty Sharma of "Saawariya" fame has scored the music for the film which stars Bobby and Priyanka Chopra in the lead along with Irrfan Khan, Akhilendra Mishra, Ninad Kamat and Aarya Babbar. "Chamku" will hit the theatres Aug 22.

"Giving music for the film was very challenging as it is not a romantic film. I had to take special care to give music according to various moods in the film," said Monty.

Speaking about his character, Bobby said: "I play a character named Chandrama Singh alias Chamku who is brought up by Naxalites in southern Bihar after his family is brutally murdered. The film is basically about his experience and how different circumstances lead to various changes in his life."

Priyanka, who has already done three films with Bobby, said: "Bobby is one of the most comfortable actors to work with and I am very happy to work with him for the fourth time."

About her character, she added: "It is a very simple and down to earth film. There is no glamour element in it and my role is also very simple. I play a school teacher who is the daughter of a rich man. But she chooses to be a teacher because she wants to serve the society. My character is so simple that for the first time I have worn mostly saris in the film."

The function was also attended by Bhushan Kumar and Divya Khosla of T-Series and lyricist Sameer. However, director Kabir Kaushik was conspicuous by his absence.

Dharmendra – a man of spirits and raring to go
31st July 2008 09.00 IST
By Agencies

Veteran superstar and member of Parliament, Dharmendra , who is recuperating from a knee surgery, says he is a man of spirits and raring to go.

Talking to reporters Tuesday night after launching the music album of his home production Chamku , starring his son Bobby Deol and Priyanka Chopra , Dharmendra said he will be seen in two forthcoming films from his banner - Vijeta Films , one with Bobby which will go on floors soon, and Masters with Sunny Deol and Bobby.

'Chamku' directed by Kabeer Kaushik and starring Irrfan Khan , Danny Denzongpa , Ritesh Deshmukh , Arya Babbar, Rajpal Yadav apart from the lead pair of Bobby and Priyanka is set for release on August 22.

"I feel blessed that with the prayers and good wishes of my immediate family and the film fraternity, I am back," he said.

To a question on whether Vijeta Films will make movies only with the Deols or encourage new talent as well, Dharmendra said, "I see myself in all newcomers. I have introduced new talent through my production company earlier like Amrita Singh , Twinkle Khanna and directors like Imtiaz Ali and Rajkumar Santoshi ."

Speaking about 'Chamku', Dharmendra said the film depicts the journey of a boy called Chandrama Singh alias Chamku whose family has been brutally murdered.

Brought up and trained by Naxalites in Southern Bihar, he moves to Mumbai and gets picked up under a covert programme jointly conceived by RAW and IB and is trained to kill.

Suddenly love enters his life and makes him realise that life is indeed beautiful. 'Chamku' has to take a call on whether to look to the future or dwell into his past.

Satyakam: Dharmendra's career best role

Dinesh Raheja

In Satyakam, a distressed-by-poverty Sharmila Tagore remarks: "Sone ke zevar banane ke liye thodi toh khot milani padti hai [To produce something as beautiful as gold jewellery, you have to add an element of impurity]."

This pragmatic worldview, however, is not acceptable to Satyakam's chief protagonist, her husband Dharmendra, who embodies the repercussions that result when a man places his lofty ideals over social obligations, monetary temptations and, indeed, over his own family.

A riveting, nationalist drama which invites parallels to Ayn Rand's famous novel The Fountainhead, Satyakam asks, 'In an imperfect world, is it possible to be an honest, unadulterated individual?' CREDITS
Producers Director Music Director Stars
Panchi Arts Hrishikesh Mukherjee Laxmikant-Pyarelal Dharmendra, Sharmila Tagore, Ashok Kumar, Sanjeev Kumar

The story unfurls in the pre-Independence era, in 1946. Satyapriya (Dharmendra) and his friend Naren (Sanjeev Kumar) are set to part company after graduating from an engineering college. While the affable Naren is unsure about his purpose in life, Satyapriya is definite about his decision to follow the straight and narrow path of unshakeable commitment to truth.

Satyapriya's ability to live by the truth undergoes baptism by fire at his very first job. His employee, a philandering prince called Kunwar Bikram Singh (Manmohan), is keen to bed the beautiful Ranjana (Sharmila) -- the illegitimate daughter of his sycophantic manager Rustomji (David).

A twist of circumstances finds Satyapriya in the role of Ranjana's protector. In a moment of dithering weakness, he allows Ranjana to be hauled away by the wily Rustomji. By the time Satyapriya realises he has sent a sheep to the slaughterhouse, it is too late. Kunwar, furious at the abolition of the privy purses, makes Ranjana the victim of his wrath and rapes her.

If one were to search for a deeper interpretation of this scene, Ranjana is probably a symbol of the vulnerable masses who were exploited by the rich.

Satyapriya does the honourable thing and marries an impregnated-by-Kunwar Ranjana. Interestingly, however, Mukherji leaves in a suggestion, via a terse exchange of dialogue, that even Satyapriya is unable to make peace with Ranjana's past. Though this chink in his armour may make Satyapriya a more humane character, and therefore more accessible to a section of the audience, it somehow dims the halo surrounding him.

The second half of the film shifts focus to Satyapriya's unrelenting fight to lance the festering sores of corruption he encounters in our society -- regardless of the ensuing personal prosecution and poverty.

Naren returns to the story after a long break and is quickly integrated into the flow. He represents the urban Everyman who, like most others, has compromised -- just enough to make his material life comfortable but not so much as to lose sleep over a stricken conscience.

But Satyapriya just cannot adopt to that mindset. He struggles to explain, "Mera dimaag kharaab ho gaya hai, ya main cynic ho gaya hoon, ya duniya badal gayee hain (I've lost my mind. Or, maybe, I have become a cynic. Or, maybe, the world has changed)." The desire to reach a higher self arises from his conviction that "main insaan hoon. Bhagwan ka sabse bada pratinidhi (I am a human being. God's most superior representative)."

The film can be said to have truly realised itself in the climax -- the emotional tension is so strong, I felt a sense of relief when tears flowed down my cheeks, unchecked. Satyapriya dies of cancer and Ranjana, with stark honesty, divulges to her son, Kabul (Sarika playing a boy), that he wasn't sired by Satyapriya and therefore cannot light his pyre.

Moved by her searing honesty, Satyapriya's grandfather (Ashok Kumar in a compelling cameo), revokes his long-nursed antagonism towards Ranjana and accepts Kabul as his great grandson.

Famous songs from Satyakam
Song Singers
Abhi kya sunoge Lata Mangeshkar
Do din ki zindagi Lata Mangeshkar
Zindagi hai kya bolo Kishore Kumar, Mukesh, Mahendra Kapoor
Thanks to this emotionally unforgettable ending, one feels Satyapriya's death was vindicated. Truth may have taken a long time to find its moorings, but it does pay dividends eventually.

Satyapriya may be no more, but he has irrevocably touched the lives of those around him. He had passed on the legacy of truth to Ranjana and his grandfather.

Hrishikesh Mukherji intelligently handles the film's many emotional high points without ever going overboard. He also successfully juxtaposes the heady eve-of-India's-freedom atmosphere with the building sense of foreboding leading to Sharmila's deflowering.

Mukherji also takes care to provide the background of his characters, giving them a well-rounded feel. For instance, we learn that Satyapriya's father became an ascetic after his mother's death and Satyapriya was raised by his grandfather, a Sanskrit scholar. Ranjana's mother, we discover, was a girl from a respectable family who gave birth to Ranjana after eloping with her driver.

As the soldier of truth, Dharmendra's performance is flawless. When his warm smile reaches his brimming-with-tears eyes, the sincerity is eminently believable. The young Sanjeev Kumar is obviously a tremendous actor in the making. While Sharmila Tagore's character is not loquacious, she imbues her silences with potent poignancy. Her performance evokes the compassion one reserves for an unattended scar.

Many attribute Satyakam's tepid box-office performance to the fact that one cannot relate to, or aspire to be, like the hero -- a torchbearer for truth.

The failing could partly lie with us (the audience). We may laugh at the sarcasm contained in Rajinder Singh Bedi's acrid dialogue: "Yeh aadmi (Satyapriya) bahut hi badmaash aur paaji hai. Rishvat vagerah nahin khaata (He is a real crook. He doesn't accept bribes)."

Deep down, we may have helplessly resigned to this notion ourselves and subsequently find Satyakam a discomforting experience.

Sidelights:

* Producer Dharmendra believes Satyakam to be the strongest role of his career. Hrishikesh Mukherjee considers it one of the most satisfying movies he made.

* Since Dharmendra had earlier won raves for his performance in Mukherjee's Anupama, he marshalled together much the same team -- actors: Dharmendra, Sharmila Tagore, David; dialogue writer: Rajinder Singh Bedi; lyricist: Kafi Azmi; cameraman: Jaywant Pathare. However, though critics praised his performance, the masses failed to throng the theatres.

Music:

* The unusual Mukherjee-Laxmikant-Pyarelal team were unable to come up with a truly memorable score.

* Lata's Abhi kya sunoge, suna toh kahoge ke hai geet adhura taraana adhura does deserve more airplay.

Dharam didn't want to play Veeru
18 Sep, 2008 06:00 am ISTlINDIATIMES MOVIES

Dharmendra was keen to play the role of Thakur Baldev Singh (played by Sanjeev Kumar) in the legendary Sholay that immortalized the Jai-Veeru friendship. The director informed him that Sanjeev Kumar would end up playing Veeru and would get the heroine.

Interestingly, Sanjeev Kumar had just then proposed marriage to Hema Malini and Dharmendra was in love with her. So more than anything, it was Dharam's love for his dream girl Basanti that made him get into the character of Veeru.

Are Dharmendra, Hema married?-
A +AFontAgencies

Who is the wife of actor-turned-MP Dharmendra and husband of 'Dreamgirl' Hema Malini, a Rajya Sabha MP herself?
An RTI applicant, who wants to know if the two MPs are married to each other, has now approached the Central Information Commission on the issue, which is likely to be heard next week.

Pointing to the alleged discrepancies in the claims made by the two MPs regarding their spouse's name, the RTI applicant has requested the CIC to direct Parliament officials to furnish correct details about the them.

As per Lok Sabha dossiers, BJP MP from Bikaner, Dharmendra's wife is Prakash Deol, a housewife, whereas Rajya Sabha MP Hema Malini in her submissions has claimed Dharmendra Deol to be her husband.

The above discrepancy came to light after the Rajya Sabha secretariat in response to the query filed by Subhash Agrawal said "spouse of Hema Malini is Dharmendra and the information is based on the bio-data submitted by the MP in the House."

Agrawal, who wanted to know about the discrepancies in the answers given by both Houses of Parliament, was told by the Rajya Sabha secretariat that under the RTI Act, the resolution of discrepancies in the information available with the two secretariats is not their mandate.

Lok Sabha Secretariat through several letters mentioned that Dharmendra did not supply any information about his wife to 'Who's Who Cell.'

The only information available was based on the travel claims submitted by the MP, it said.

Dharmendra: 'I live in people's hearts...'

Dec 12, 2008

B-town’s handsomest hunk completes an eventful run of 50 years in films this year and on his 73rd birthday, he’s busy planning a health farm and resort at Lonavala and also essaying an adorable role in Cheers! with his darling son Bobby Deol.
Fans dote on him for his He-man image with a heart of gold, the film industry knows him for his legendary hospitality and for me, Dharmendra is the ultimate symbol of romance - with his dashing looks and guileless smile he turns all three of us - my granny, my mom and I - weak in the knees. “He’s a dilwala”, “He’s so becomingly innocent” and of course “He’s a Greek god” are some compliments lavished on him.

As for the wonder hero himself, he winces with embarassment when you refer to his looks and his reputation. At his cosy office in Sunny Super Sound, Juhu, Mumbai - he wears his celebrity status as casually as his dark blue denims. As it is lunch-time, the famous Deol tiffin is brought in and Dharamji advises how “brown rice” is easier to digest than “rotis” and then serves you a generous helping of a light chicken-broccoli curry. After his recent knee surgery, he says that he is even more careful with his diet and exercise. He is a great follower of Baba Ramdev and performs pranayam for 40 minutes daily.

A feature that emerges from looking back at the five decades of his illustrious career in films is his complete versatility. Debuting with Arjun Hingorani’s Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tera in 1960, he starred in meaningful yet woman-oriented films like Anpadh ( Mala Sinha in ‘62), Bandini and Soorat Aur Seerat ( Nutan/‘63), Mamta (Suchitra Sen/‘66) and Anupama (Sharmila Tagore/‘66) before taking off his shirt as Shaka in O P Ralhan’s Phool Aur Patthar (also‘66). That shirtless scene made him the He-Man of tinseltown. His sensitive portrayals in Satyakam and Khamoshi were well-received yet not celebrated.

It was in the ‘70s that Dharam really made his mark in the romantic company of Hema Malini in almost 30 films, of which 18 turned out to be jubilees - Raja Jani, Seeta Aur Geeta, Jugnu, Charas, Pratiggya and Dost to name a few. His successes include mainstream multi-star films like Sholay, Chupke Chupke, Dharam-Veer and Hukumat. He co-produced Pratiggya with his brother. It featured the famous Main Jat yamla pagla deewana number and he displayed a natural flair for comedy in this decade.

Dharmendra started his home banner Vijeta Films, named after his daughter, as he launched son Sunny Deol in an action-filled ranch romance Betaab. From the mid-’80’s a decline set in and Dharam began starring in C-grade films before retiring completely since 2004 to his farm house in Lonavala where he grew his own vegetables. He was elected a Member of Parliament from Bikaner. Last year marked his comeback in three films - Life In A... Metro, Johnny GaddaAr and Apne. So after 50 glorious years of premieres and jubilees, the original He-man is back in saddle to gallop into action yet again.

He represents the quintessential Bollywood success story and remains an eternal icon for film aspirants especially for all those back home in Punjab. He is the ultimate macho hero who still has no replacement according to his fans and critics. But the lesser-known facet of Dharmendra’s personality is that he expresses almost all his thoughts in a shayarana andaaz...

Excerpts from an exlusive interview with the birthday boy:

It’s not fair, Dharamji, that you meet us so rarely.
(Laughs) We Deols aren’t too good with marketing and PR. But I like to believe that I don’t live in newspaper headlines but in the hearts of people. God has blessed me with a soft heart, I inherit that trait from my mother. She taught us to respect humanity and to seek God in people. If you can’t respect those who you see, how you can respect the unseen God? God isn’t restricted to temple, gurudwara or masjid for me - God is in people.

Is that the reason you look so peaceful and contented?
I am happy because I am back in the arms of my beloved! ‘Acting meri mehbooba hai, mera peshaa nahin. Main deewana tha iske liye, aaj bhi deewana hoon’ Only God and I know how I kept away from acting for the past few years (nods). She was upset with me but I have managed to win her back (smiles).

So this romance of yours dates back to 50 years ago!
I was in the 9th standard when I saw Dilip Kumar’s Shaheed. I was totally mesmerised by the celluloid world. I began watching a film every month. And what started as a spark of excitement had by now kindled into a throbbing flame. I felt the world of cinema was heavenly with those handsome men and beautiful fairies. I wondered why I couldn’t be one of them. When I told my mother about becoming an actor, she warned me not to tell my father because he was a strict Headmaster! She told me to send in an application. I think it was the dua of that naive mother that a talent contest was launched subsequently and I actually filled out an application to be an actor. When I visited my village Sahniwal recently, I went looking for the letter-box where I had posted that application. It was too crowded in the daytime so I went back quietly in the night - that place is my teerth-sthan.

Did you participate in school or college plays?
I was a good athlete, always out in the playground and my friends would often tell me - ‘Why don’t you become an actor?’ But I was very shy, I remember the one-act play I acted in during college days - I had a walk-on part yet I was trembling like a leaf when girls went swirling past me!

Did you take the famous Frontier Mail back then like scores of strugglers even today?
Oh yes, I took the Frontier Mail from Ludhiana in April 1958 for Mumbai. I was choked with anxiety and excitement as I boarded the train to star in Arjun Hingorani’s Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere. I couldn’t believe my luck that I was travelling by first class and was being put up in a five-star hotel in Mumbai.

Was the world of cinema really like heaven?
Soon I realised what a sentimental fool I was. I thought all actors would be such good friends, playing together and laughing happily. I was scandalised to know how false my perception had been. This is a very mechanical, commercial industry with little space for deep relations and love - I find myself intruding into this strange world. Like Jaya Bachchan in Guddi, it was a rude awakening for me.

You were known to be petrified of facing the camera initially. Mala Sinha, your Anpadh co-star, recalls how you were trembling in the first shot which was the suhaag raat scene.
Indeed I was trembling. My shyness is a blessing - it made me play out roles naturally without adapting any mannerisms.

And to think you took off your shirt in Phool Aur Patthar to become the he-man!
I never knew I will be the he-man. I am never happy with my work; I honestly feel I am not as good as they make me out to be. My only attribute is that I have a soft face and tough body. As for taking off the shirt - it happened suddenly on the spot. I played Shaka who swings out of the club and notices an old woman played by Leela Chitnis shivering in cold, I asked how it would be if I took off my shirt to cover her. O P Ralhan liked my suggestion.

Didn’t you have any apprehensions dressing up in Roman frocks for Manmohan Desai’s Dharam -Veer?
Manji said the get-up was to be like Roman warriors and the first thing I did was to train rigorously because thighs are the toughest body to get back in shape. I was showered with fan mail after the release of the film from young fans saying that they had joined gyms. My hard work had paid off.

Of all the characters you played - from action, drama to comedy - which one do you identify with?
Satyapriya from Satyakam - I am like him - my emotions are true and transparent. I am truthful like him too.

Why do you think you and Hemaji made such a wonderful pair? Which of her performances do you like the best?
She and I are very alike, we have the same soul. She is the greatest woman I know. We did 30 films together of which 12 were golden jubilees and 6 were silver jubilees. Personally I like her performance in Sharafat, she was exemplary in it.

Could you sense when you started slipping down?
Sure! It started in 1994. I didn’t go out asking for roles and took on projects that were offered to me. I also hit the bottle by then and once when my bauji came home and saw my bar - he smashed the bottles.

You went into hibernation and resurfaced as an Member of Parliament, could you bring about any changes in the desert town?
Joining politics was an emotional decision. When they said, ‘Acche log aane chahiye politics mein’ - I jumped in the fray. Bikaner has improved a lot - Sur Sagar which used to be a polluted, choked cesspool has been cleaned and around it is a garden - a favourite tourist spot. The traffic has eased out with the new overbridges. It is better connected by rail and road now. Also the girl’s college is doing better now. But politics is a closed chapter for me now.

Buzz is that Vijeta Films is all set to be rock again. What are the plans afoot?
We Deols are bad businessmen. We got no overflow from Betaab, Ghayal and Barsaat, which were big hits. With Sunny’s He - Man and my film with Bobby entitled Cheers! we want to have our banner flying high. I also have Jahnu Barua’s Har Pall. Anil Sharma has a script for us where we three Deols will be seen as father-son conmen.

For a long time now, I have wanted to set up two studios and a health farm and resort at Lonavala, a one of its kinds in India.

Your blessing also comes in the form of your doting children.
Oh yes. My children are so emotional - Sunny is a good soul, always wanting to do his papa proud and you saw how Bobby broke down during that award ceremony saying ‘I am here because of my papa!’ Esha is papa’s darling - she called me just now telling me that she was watching my film Mera Gaon Mera Desh.

Maa kasam, it’s Dharmendra’s golden jubilee

New Delhi, May 16, 2009

Fifty years ago, in 1959, a young man of around 24 from Phagwara, Punjab arrived in Mumbai to act in the movies. He had been spotted at a Filmfare talent hunt and offered a role in a film Dil Bhi Tera, Hum Bhi Tere. His fee was to be Rs 51, plus breakfast.

It’s been 50 years since. Dharmendra is now 74, and still making movies, for better remuneration. Shooting for his latest film, Cheers, has been postponed due to elections, says the man who won the Bikaner Lok Sabha seat on a BJP ticket in 2004.

This time, he’s been out of the poll fray. He’s more excited about Cheers where he stars along with son, Bobby Deol, nephew, Abhay Deol, Nafisa Ali and Mugdha Godse. “The story is about a father and son’s (played by me and Bobby) journey on a two wheeler, with comic as well as emotional touches. There are many dramatic sequences between the two of us. Nafisa Ali has a brief but important character in the film opposite me,” he says. He was very impressed watching Nafisa in her maiden film, Junoon, and enjoyed a good work rapport with her whilst shooting for Life In A Metro, says Dharmendra.

Sangit Sivan, who directed Ek, is also directing Cheers. Does Dharmendra still have confidence in him after Ek flopped badly? Dharmendra replies, “I don’t lose confidence in anyone if just one film of his does not perform well. Sangit has worked really hard with the script of Cheers and I am sure, he will come out with flying colours.”

Dharmendra has also given a great performance in Jahnu Barua’s to be released, Har Pal. He clarifies, “I really don’t understand, why there is such a delay in releasing Har Pal. I play the role of Preity Zinta’s father in the film and Shiney Ahuja is the male protagonist.”

The Bollywood strong man has endured the passage of time far better than his contemporaries, Manoj Kumar and Shashi Kapoor. “How time flies. We all started our careers together and it just seems like yesterday. The three of struggled very hard and overcame humiliation to get where we are today,” says the actor. “Manoj, or Manno as I call him, is a brilliant, director and actor. Shashi Kapoor is a powerful performer, who has produced memorable films like Junoon and 36 Chowringhee Lane.”

He’s had several roles that are part of Bollywood lore. He was the sensitive poet Ashok in Anupama and the golden-hearted crook Veeru in Sholay. Yet, his own favourite film is Mamta.

The biggest challenge ever for Dharmendra was to face Dilip Kumar in his only Bengali film, Paari, which was directed by Jagannath Chatterjee in 1963. “What a powerful story, Paari had. The film was shot in the Andaman prison, which had opened for shooting for the first time,” he says. “Sadly, my dialogues had to be dubbed but I thought that I really got the scope to perform without being overshadowed by the mighty Dilip Kumar, who played the role of a jailor in the film.”

Some of the best actresses Dharmendra has even worked with, he says, have been Suchitra Sen, Meena Kumari and Nutan. About his second wife, Hema Malini, with whom he fell in love on the sets of Sholay, he says, “Hema has matured greatly as an actress. It’s still not too late for the two of us to act together if we’re offered a good script.”

A father has to be strict: Sunny

21 Jun 2009

As most fathers hope for, actor Sunny Deol has followed in his father Dharmendra’s footsteps, and made just as big a mark for himself as an action hero.

Sit with this famous father-son duo and you’ll feel they’re more friends than parent-child. But say this to Sunny and he quickly says, “It’s difficult to be friends with your child. Friendship takes away the element of parenthood. One cannot be too lenient with the child because then there will be no fear in them, they won’t value anything you give them.
So how was it for him growing up as the son of a famous filmstar? “I’ve grown up loving dad and being proud of his achievements. In fact, I still feel like a child in front of him,” reveals the actor who equates a father to shelter and a mother to cuddles.

Meanwhile, giving his take on fatherhood, Dharmendra says, “A father means protection. When the father is around, the children do not fear anything, they feel they can take on anything or anyone. Yet however, they are more inclined towards the mother.” He goes on add that though the love between a father and son is great, it is not expressed as much. But he cautions against fathers getting to friendly with children. “No matter how close you are to your child, as a father there must be a distance. Fear helps keep the child in control, at least quite a bit,” says the actor.

Sunny is father to 18-year-old Ranveer and 15-year-old Rajveer Singh. So what kind of a father is? “I’m quite strict. I see that they don’t go out much. And if they do, they have to be home by eight latest,” he says adding that it is in fact the ever doting grandfather Dharmendra who spoils them. “If they want something and I am not willing to give it to them, they know exactly who to get it from,” he says looking at his father who helplessly shrugs, that charming smile intact.

Responding to this Dharmendra says, “I can’t help it. When they come all pleading to me, I have to give in to them.” Sunny goes on the reveal that the yester-years hero is so doting on his grandchildren that brother Bobby’s youngest son’s day starts with spending time with his grandfather. “Only then will he get ready for school,” he adds. And while he’s busy relating these incidents, the smile on Drarmendra’s face is worth literally a million bucks.

Talking further about the bond between him and his sons, Sunny laments saying, “I have suddenly realised how quickly time is flying by. They are growing up so fast. Sometimes I try to hug them but they just run away.”

What is the toughest part of parenthood and what is the easiest, we ask the duo. “It’s nice when you see your children growing up into good human being, obedient to elders and successful in whatever they do in life,” says Dharmendra adding that the toughest part is to see one’s child going down the wrong way and not doing well in life.

Sunny meanwhile gets a tad emotional and says the toughest part of parenthood is when your child — who looks up to you like God — expects a miracle from you and you know that it is way beyond you. “It’s difficult to reason with children. They know what’s good and what’s not. So even if you try and correct them, they just won’t listen. You just need to keep your fingers crossed that they don’t end down the wrong road of life,” he adds.

And what about Dharmendra’s relationship with his daughters?A father is a father. They are always more lenient too daughters. Daughters are given preference. After all, one day they get married and go away. Yeh ladke toh idhar he pade rehte hai,” he says much to our amusement. Even the much amused Sunny can’t help but laugh out when his father says this.

Dharmendra concludes saying that among other things, parent should definitely teach children about harmony and loving everyone despite race, colour and religion, “That’s the most important thing,” he says. Amen to it paaji!

Tell Dad you love him: Dharam

21 Jun 2009

The choice of Guest Editor for this Father’s Day issue, fell on the Big Daddy of them all... Bollywood’s evergreen He-Man, Dharmendra.

The question was, would a rugged and retiring actor like him be up to the sensitive task? As you will see over these pages, Dharmendra was — and how!
He drove up on the appointed day, Sunny Deol sitting in the back and looking much like garam Dharam himself must have 50 years ago, when the Frontier Mail deposited him at VT Station to become a Filmfare hero for Bollywood. Except that Sunny’s right arm was in a sling, nature’s mischievous payback for violent roles in all his films from Ghayal and Damini to Gaddar and Jo Bole So Nihal. Dharmendra, fortunately, came out with both arms swinging. Age has been kind to him, at 73, he looks like he could take on Salman Khan, John Abraham and Hrithik Roshan together.

They were a riot at the edit meeting. The canteen boy was sent packing with his cutting chai . The Deols drink rich and frothy lassi. You can take the farmer out of Punjab but who is going to take Punjab out of the farmer? Dharmendra started by confessing with the honesty that only a strong and simple man can possess that he didn’t know what Father’s Day was. “As a boy, I feared my father who was a disciplinarian, and was naturally close to my mother. The day my father showed me a little affection, it was Father’s Day for me,” he said simply.

Sunny, however, is a 21st century dad, he has teenage boys who run up huge cell phone bills on calls to girls! He knew what Father’s Day was all about. But, he too agreed that in the Deol home, he and brother Bobby had their own fear of Dharmendra. “Mum was our friend, but when we ran out of control... she would threaten to tell papa, and that was enough for us,” he recalled. “But we grew up fearless because we were Dharmendra’s kids. We knew papa would take care of any issue. Even now, he’s our shelter and strength.”

They both had almost the same interpretations of what a father meant. “He was the lakshman rekha, which I broke through my mother,” said Dharmendra. “While my father’s love for my sisters was unconditional and special, he always stopped short of me... but yet today, I miss him more than anybody else.” And Sunny said, “We are still uncomfortable around papa. It’s difficult to be his friend. If there is friendship, then the element of the father is lost. Friends you can always have outside. There is great love between papa and us... but it’s not expressed, it only comes when difficulties face the family.”

They both talked as fathers about the role of the man of the house in 21st century India. “Fathers should try to be close to their children, they should make time for them, but still maintain a distance to keep the kids on track. That’s a sacrifice fathers have to make. And give them love. Because when you give love, you get love,” said Dharmendra. What was the biggest lesson Sunny had learned from him? “That humanity is greater than any religion,” the Deol puttar replied.

Dharmendra explained, “My message to fathers today is, teach your children to live in harmony. We are not Hindus and Muslims. We call India our motherland. But do we believe in that? If we do, then we ought to behave like true sons to our mother and be honest with her. Everything comes with honesty.” And what was the most important thing Dharmendra had learned as a father? He paused, tears in his eyes now, the pain of a strong man unashamed to show his emotions, then said, “I learned not from my own sons, but from Fardeen Khan recently that you should tell your father you love him before it is too late. I didn’t do that. Now my father is no more. And I know from Sunny and Bobby, what he wanted of me....”

Dharam ji impressed with James Dean

21 Jun 2009

Dharmendra’s fascination for Hollywood films began only after he came to Mumbai in pursuit of his own dreams of becoming an actor.

“Samson and Delilah was the first English film I’d seen,” he recalls. But it was James Dean who’s personality made an impression on the Bollywood star. “Apart from Dean, I really like Gregory Peck, Cary Grant, Mel Gibson in Braveheart, Robert De Niro and Dustin Hoffman in Kramer Vs Kramer. I also like Meryl Streep,” he adds. As for his own Hollywood aspirations, Dharmendra confesses that he thought that after working with Rex Harrison in Shalimar, the doors of Hollywood would open for him. “But it never did materialise. However, I think I wouldn’t even want to ask for work by compromising on my self respect. They expected me to speak in American accent!” added the garam Dharam.

Sunny too agrees and says that he has never been in awe of the West. “Globalisation has indeed brought the two industries closer, but it’s more to do with the West accepting us. I am not particularly looking forward to working out there, but getting them to act in our movies would be great,” said Sunny. Talking about his favourite, he says, “I think Julia Roberts is a fantastic actress.”

Deols and the party spirit

21 Jun 2009

Time To Bond

“Parties, celebrations, get-togethers bring people closer. We used to celebrate almost every occasion – be it a jubilee or a mahurat or an anniversary – with lots of josh. Even if a film flopped, we used to celebrate the film nonetheless. We just needed a bahana to party! Parties were the perfect occasion to meet friends, especially ones you couldn’t keep in touch with all the time. It used to be like a ‘lost and found’ house, where old friends meet after long and spend time together. Aaj jaise sab kuch dikhawa nahi tha, woh dinno mein hum dil se milte the aur gale lagate the. I remember Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor, so many of us, we used to have a great time,” says Dharmendra.

Wine ‘N’ Women

Another thing I loved about parties used to be the beautiful women present there. Dekhne mein bahut mazaa aata tha! But it used to be just innocent looking, nothing else. What’s wrong in appreciating beauty? And then we used to drink and enjoy ourselves... I remember so many hangovers... but it all used to be clean, pure, good fun!”

Impromptu party!

Outdoor shoots in those days used to be so much more fun, almost like a big party in itself! All the cast and crew used to get together at the end of a day’s shooting, or sometimes between two shifts, and we used to chat and share stories, cook on the sets, share food, sing and dance. Nowadays, shoots have become too mechanical with everyone retiring to their own vanity vans after giving their shot.

...Sunny doesn’t

Sunny, on the other hand, was never a party person. The elder Deol brother, unlike his full-of-life papa, prefers the company of close people. “It’s a known fact that I don’t like to party. First, hosts used to feel bad when I didn’t attend their parties, but today, people are used to it and don’t mind. Rather than having a mindless conversation with a bunch of people I don’t know too well, and who are high most of the time, I would prefer to enjoy an evening with people close to me, I enjoy such moments,” Sunny lets you know.

Even star kids are not spared: Dharamendra

21 Jun 2009

Sunny Deol is known to keep a low-profile. The actor admits that he is yet to learn to be media savvy.

“That’s something that we all have to learn. Whether people say good things or bad, I don’t react. But I do realise that when you don’t speak up, people don’t get to know your side of the story. I am still to get a hang of it.” Sunny doesn’t read too many gossip dailies either. “I read the news only if it has some mention of me or my family,” he says.

Dharamendra agrees that stars and controversies go hand-in-hand. “But there was a certain way things were done earlier. Today, people get to know what an actor’s having for breakfast or dinner.” And it’s not just the stars who have to face the flak. Even star kids are not spared. He adds, “People can be very cruel to star kids based on what they read about their parents in the papers. People are either very good or very bad, and kids have to bear the brunt of it.”

Dharmendra is not brand conscious

21 Jun 2009

No socks for me

Actor Dharmendra is not the one too get tied down by the current fashion trends. He says, “I like to dress as per my age. There’s
no specific brand that I love to sport but comfort is of utmost importance to me. I love to wear jeans. But not many people know that even while I am seen wearing a suit, shirt, formal trousers, I skip wearing socks with my shoes. I find socks really cumbersome and irritable. So, I go sans socks but fully suited-booted.” But will you be ready to walk the ramp as a showstopper for any designer, asked BT. Being visible is a part of entertainment. If need be, why not? ”

Fit is important

Sunny Deol says, “It was during my film Betaab that I wore almost every attire designed by the brand Armani. Although I do recognise the need of being fashionable, I do not go crazy about labels. I would say, it is important to wear what fits one best. For that, a good physique is really important. Personally, I would love to sport clothes made of cotton fabric, which is breathable and comfortable to the skin. But brand-wise, only a good fit is the criteria on my mind. A great brand with ill-fitting silhouette will find its way in the bin.”

I could never learn to promote myself: Dharmendra
Suruchi Sharma, TNN, Jul 16, 2010, 12.00am IST

In a career spanning over 50 years, Dharmendra did not win any popular awards, but he says that the love of his fans is enough....

- You, Sunny and Bobby, will be seen together again on the big screen in Yamla Pagla Deewana, after Apne. What made you all come together for this movie?
- People are saying that Yamla Pagla Deewana (YPD) is a sort of re-launch for Sunny and Bobby and that I agreed to do it as I wanted to revive my sons’ career, but this is not true. How can it be a re-launch? We did Apne together, three years ago, and the movie was appreciated by the audience. While Apne was an emotional movie, YPD will be more on the comic side. The script was nice and our roles well-defined. And I have always maintained that whenever we get a good script, we will come together for our audience.

- So, who is Yamla, who is Pagla and who is Deewana in real life?
- (Laughs) I am yamla. Everyone knows, I was and I still am a yamla jat. Pagla I would say will go well with Bobby and Sunny is deewana. In the film, Bobby and I play buddies and in real life too, I’m more of a friend to my boys. It is Sunny who behaves like a father to Bobby.

- In the 70s and 80s, you were the only hero to have a well-built body in Bollywood. Now almost every actor is into body building and a sort of trend for six pack abs and eight pack abs has been established. What’s your take on this?
- There’s nothing wrong with having six pack or eight pack abs; I feel it’s a very healthy trend. You tell me, who doesn’t want to look good and be complimented?

- Among the current crop, whose body/build do you admire?
- I really appreciate and admire Aamir Khan for the way he worked on his body for Ghajini.

- You will also be seen with daughter Esha in Tell Me Oh Khuda. How was it playing father to your daughter onscreen?
- Tell Me Oh Khuda was a very emotional experience for me. First, the script was very emotional, and then acting with Esha brought out altogether new sentiments. We both got very emotional while working on this film, but it was wonderful sharing screen space with my daughter. This was the first time I saw her acting.

- But why did it take so long for you and Esha to come together onscreen?
- I told you, I am a yamla jat from a village. I still have that same mentality, same traditions. I am very protective and possessive of my daughters, so all that came in between. But you love your children and their happiness is your happiness. Like every father, I share a special bond with my daughters. I try to understand their needs and expectations. So, when Esha asked me to play the role of her on-screen father, I could not refuse. You live for your children; and I did this movie only for her.

- Your contemporaries Rishi Kapoor and Vinod Khanna are in the movie too. How was it getting back with old colleagues?
- Oh, it was wonderful. Waise bhi I try and keep in touch with my friends and colleagues like Dilip saab and Dev saab. Dilip saab is like an elder brother to me and a source of inspiration, and Dev saab is truly a legend. I miss Feroze Khan a lot. He was a very good friend and an amazing colleague. It hurts to talk about him. I still can’t believe he’s no longer with us, he was such a live-wire.

- You have this image of a tough guy, but those who know you say you are a softie...
- Yes, I’m a very emotional person, but I think that’s a disadvantage. Emotional people suffer more in life. They don’t know the tricks of the trade and they can’t go after publicity. You will never see their pictures splashed across magazines and newspapers. I’ve been in this industry for so long, but I could never learn to promote or publicise myself. This is how we are, all of us - my family.

- Do you regret not winning any popular awards?
- Not winning awards used to bother me in the beginning. To be honest, I was expecting awards for movies like Satyakam, Seeta Aur Geeta, Chupke Chupke, Pratigya, etc, but you forget all about awards when you get the love of the audience. I have been in this industry for 50 years and the love that I get from people still amazes me. It is much better than dusty trophies lying on some shelf. That is where I want to be always - in people’s hearts.

The 1970s were my boyhood years in Hindi cinema. I’d grown up idolising Dilipsaab (Dilip Kumar), Rajsaab (Raj Kapoor) and Devsaab (Dev Anand). It had been my dream to see them in person, talk to them and touch them. Suddenly, I too, was a part of their world. Unbelievable!
I wonder if today’s stars are so wide-eyed about their heroes!

Salman (Khan), Shah Rukh (Khan) and Akshay (Kumar) have always been respectfully affectionate to me, and I love them as much as Sunny and Bobby. They are health conscious boys. It pleases me to see them take such good care of their bodies. Even my Esha comes back glowing from regular workouts. For the Deols, the gym has always been our temple.

DharmendraMy sons are fighters. There were times when Sunny’s back was so bad that he had to drag himself along the floor to the bathroom. But he continued doing stunts.
Recently, I was shooting in Goa for Tell Me Oh Khuda (2010) and Esha was hanging upside down over the sea. A shiver danced down my spine but she was fearless. I’ve done similar stunts, genes don’t change. Daughters are so much like their fathers.

I see myself in my children. When I’m acting with my kids, I have to consciously keep a check on my emotions. Apne (2007) was about family ties and a father’s ambitions. Yamla Pagla Deewana (2010) which we are now filming, is a comedy that will have you rolling on the floor and then make you sit up with an emotional punch.

We’ve borrowed the film’s title from a chartbuster in Pratiggya (1975). Even after three decades, youngsters still play the song. Hema (Malini) was a darling who became my darling. I can’t sing… Nor can I dance. My choreographers let me do my own steps and surprisingly, it worked.

Hema and I must have done 25 films together, 18 of which were jubilee hits. I remember chasing after her to the tunes of Tera peecha na choodunga soniye... in Jugnu. The film ran for 50 weeks!

When in college, I’d see two films a day. I’d queue up for tickets, my heart in my mouth after the first gong sounded, wondering if I’d get in. I’d sit in the stalls, watch 18 reels without blinking and munch samosas in the interval.

Today, we walk into malls, sip milkshakes, enter a multiplex screen and sink into a cushy recliner. ‘Mazza nahin aata hai’ (It’s no fun)! To enjoy a film, you need to sit on the edge of the chair. That’s why I’ve stopped going to the movies but I caught Ghajini (2008). Aamir (Khan) is a fine actor. I’ve seen some of Shah Rukh’s movies. But I miss the good old days…

Dharmendra relives his golden years in the movies

I remember reporting for a 7 am shoot of Bandini (1963) no later than 6.30 am. The only other person besides me on the sets would be the sweeper. At 7.30 am sharp, Nutan would walk in. We never packed up before 11 pm. No one could even think of leaving early. Bimalda (director Bimal Roy) commanded so much respect!
That was in the 1960s. By the ’70s, I was doing double and triple shifts and even though Hrishida (director Hrishikesh Mukherjee) was like an elder brother, there were times when I’d be late for the shooting of Chupke Chupke (1975).

Dada was a disciplinarian and punished me for my tardiness by cutting me out of an antara (verse) completely when Amitabh (Bachchan) and I were picturising Sa re ga ma pa…
Another time, he threatened to keep me out of the climax. I was told, “Aye Dharam idhar aa (Dharam, come here), go to the toilet.” By the time I came out, a part of the scene had been canned. Fortunately, he let me make an appearance before the end.

I’ve done some of my most beautiful films with Dada. Satyakam (1969) was one of my best performances perhaps because I didn’t need to act — the character (Satyapriya ‘Sath’ Acharya) was so much like me. Anupama (1966) was also memorable for the achingly poignant ‘Kya dil ne kaha…’ It was tiresome waking up at daybreak to shoot for the song, but today, when I see it, I can appreciate the dappled light of dawn even in black-and-white.

And then, in the ’70s, there was Guddi (1971). The idea was to expose our superficial heroes but to our surprise, the film made me an even bigger hero. After the film’s release, schoolgirls trooped up to me for autographs. Even Jaya (Bhaduri) admitted she had been a fan when in school in Bhopal. In two chotis (plaits) she still looked like a schoolgirl to me.

I took off my shirt for the first time in Phool Aur Patthar (1966). The film starring Meena Kumari celebrated a diamond jubilee. I went bare bodied in Dharam-Veer (1977) too. The opening shot of me driving a chariot made such an impact that it gave me the He-Man tag.

Pack a Punch

I have to thank my parents who blessed me with a great physique. Sometimes the strong characters I played overshadowed the softer ones like Maanav in Dost (1974), because a punch is always more effective than a quiet word. But Mera Gaon Mera Desh (1971) and Naya Zamana (1971) released within a week of each other and even though Ajit and Anoop were diametrically different characters, both films were hits!

The He-Man image got me lots of action films like Jugnu (1973), Sholay (1975), Kartavyya (1979), Krodhi (1981) and Loha (1987). Loha was unforgettable for one particular scene where I hit a man on the head and he sinks halfway into the sand.

When action director Veeru Devgan explained what he wanted, I was hesitant. “Yaar, it’s going to look odd, how can one punch from me sink a man?” I argued. Veeru was insistent. “Do it for me paaji,” he urged, convinced that I’d carry it off. I finally gave in to his requests and did the scene, even though I found it absurd.
That wasn’t the end of it. Veeru then wanted me to show off my biceps. I was even more embarrassed but he insisted that it would go down well with the audience. After the film released, he accompanied me to a theatre so we could watch the reactions live. When the scene came on, I was surprised by the thunderous applause that greeted my thumping blow. And the clapping doubled when I flexed my muscles.

The classic action flick of ’70s was undoubtedly Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay. We never expected it to become the phenomenon it has. In fact, it opened to scathing reviews with critics dismissing it off as “sound and fury signifying nothing”. But after a lukewarm first week, collections picked up and the film went on to become a blockbuster. The beauty of Sholay was that every character was memorable, whether it was Keshto Mukherjee, Jagdeep or Birbal.

Over the years, there have been a lot of stories about how I wanted to play the role of Thakur, enacted by Sanjeev Kumar. That’s hogwash. Veeru is such a boisterous, flamboyant character. Why would I want to play anyone else? It was a role written for me. And I had Hema as my Basanti too!

Salim Khan and Javed Aktar’s dialogues have become legendary. Lines like “Aarey o Samba, kitney aadmi the…” are quoted even today. I improvised on some. of them. For instance, in the scene where I’m tottering on top of the tower, threatening to commit suicide unless Basanti’s aunt agrees to our match, I deliberately added a ji to the mausi (aunt) to pile on the maska’.

Fans are forever

In our time, life ebbed gently. The tempo is frenetic now. It’s the fast food culture. Eat, enjoy and forget. “Spit it out fast and get lost.” Movies now have a shorter shelf life but the love of fans is forever.

Just last year, I was in New York and a Muslim gentleman, his wife besides him, stretched out his hands as if he wanted to embrace me. I walked forward and took his hands in mine. And tears of joy rolled down his cheeks.
Moments like these are special. I keep reminding the youngsters not to take this love for granted or let it go to their heads. It’s precious and in showbiz we get lots of it.

Big B a ghost in Dharmendra’s Sholay 2
VICKEY LALWANI , MUMBAI MIRROR, Sep 11, 2010, 12.00am IST

Dharmendra talks about battling booze, making movies and getting fitter

- In your forthcoming film Yat Yamala Pagla Deewana you are working with your sons Sunny and Bobby for the second time after Apne. How is working with family?
- With family, there are no ego clashes, no negativity. It always gives you an extra boost, which shows in the final output. After Apne, we were flooded with offers from filmmakers who wanted to cast the three of us. But we were waiting for a good script.
Yat Yamala Pagla Deewana is a comedy, but the backbone is the emotion. Sunny and Bobby play my sons. I play a thug who has separated from my wife (played by Nafisa Joseph) and take Bobby with me. Let's keep the rest of the story under wraps (smiles).

- You are working with your daughter Esha too in Tell Me O Khuda...
- With daughters, you see, I am still a man from the village. Let's not go there. All said and done, we live for the happiness of our children, don't we? I felt very tense when I saw her doing so many action scenes. She was hanging from the wing of a plane. I was waiting in my vanity van and I called her. Her phone was off. I called up the director. She was hauled up and assured me that she was fine. When I wasn't convinced, she said that she has my Jat blood and I should stop worrying about her.

- Does Hema Malini worry about her?
- You rarely get such a brave and strong mother like her.

- And how is she as a director? Now that Mayur Puri, the director of Tell Me O Khuda, is out she is directing you...
- On the sets, I only think of her as a director. The same applies to all my directors, even if they are my friends. Hema is a capable director. She knows what she is doing.

- Does your family come to you when they have issues?
- (Smiles) No. They don't want to give me any pain, I guess.

- Recently, you told Ramesh Sippy on national television that he should make a sequel of Sholay with Bobby and Abhishek in lead roles...
- I was toying with the idea of a sequel. But it will never happen. It's too late, 35 years have elapsed.

- But what do you envisage in the sequel?
- I was thinking that Amitabh should be a soul who is still attached to Jaya. I return to the house where Jaya lives, but she informs me that the village now has more brutal dacoits than Gabbar Singh. I recruit Bobby and Abhishek to wipe them out. And then Jaya tells Amitabh's soul that Bobby is his new Veeru, but he too is a boozard (laughs). Actually, I am writing a film script.

- Film script?
- Yes, with Bobby in the lead. The film will be called Portable Lover. The protagonist is an emotional person who gets into various relationships. Many girls come into his life and go away. I will also play a role.

- You've completed 50 years in Bollywood. What are the high points of your career?
- In terms of movies, I would say the highs have been Phool Aur Pathar, Sholay, Chupke Chupke, Anupma and Bandini. In terms of adulation, I think I am blessed. I am born to love and to get love. I want to trace even one person who doesn't like me. I had wanted to attain heights and never retire. But frankly, I hadn't expected that I'll last 50 years in Bollywood.

- What is your day like?
- On most days, I get up by 6 am. I get on the exercycle machine for an hour. I gradually raise my heart rate to 100 per minute. Then I feel on top of the world.

- Have you stopped drinking?
- Yes. That's why I am kicking again. I mistreated alcohol. Sharab mujhse gussa ho gayi, usne mujhse kaha ki tumhe mujhe peena nahin aaya. Chahte toh, zindagi bhar pee sakte.

- When did you realise that you should stop drinking?
- The realization dawned often. But I'd go back to drinking again. Lekin ab, bilkul nahin, bahut ho gaya. It's been six months now. I am enjoying working out. I am enjoying my food; I eat cereals in cold milk in the morning, just one chapati and bhaji for lunch and a soup in the evening. No food after 7 pm. I am enjoying my newfound fitness.

- There were reports that you had a heart scare...
- No. I was just hurt and was admitted for a check-up.

- Is Sunny Sound Studios being redeveloped?
- Yeah. The plan is to make a building there.

- Do you watch films in a theatre?
- No. That excitement is gone, woh zamaana kuch aur tha, first day first show, ghanti bajti thi, news reel, those samosas in the interval. If a child cried, the audience would get irritated. Today, it seems people come to theatres to recline in comfortable seats, have popcorn and drink colas.

- What do you think of today's films?
- I think films are still good. Only they have become shorter. They don't take time to explain the characters and the situations. But then, the world is in a hurry, isn't it?

- What else is happening in your life?
- I am writing my autobiography. I also want to put my life on celluloid by making a short film.

Dharam paji turns lyricist
New Delhi, October 26, 2010

The original action star of Bollywood has dabbled into something new. The actor for the first time has penned lyrics of a song for his upcoming film, Yamla Pagla Deewana.

The three-minute-long song was recently recorded, with Sukhvinder Singh lending his voice.

Dharmendra confirms to Mumbai Mirror, “Yes, it is true. This is a song that I had first sung on a show in America. After that, when we were working on Yamla Pagla Deewana, I thought about writing the entire song. Everyone loved it and it has been recorded in Sukhvinder’s voice. We are yet to shoot the song and will decide later where to place it."
"We are also toying with the idea of using it in parts throughout the narrative of the film. The lyrics of the song are Kad ke bottle dabjo, Jat muh na lag jave, dafli baaje aapo aap, nasha sar nu chad jave. I am yet to hear how the recorded song but I am very happy,” adds the actor.

Dharmendra's back with a bang!
Mark Manuel, TNN, Dec 8, 2010,

For his 75th birthday today, Dharmendra could not have asked for anything as fulfilling as a new film with his sons Sunny and Bobby Deol.

That too, in his 50th year in Bollywood. But God has been kind, and the Deols have Yamla Pagla Deewana lined up for release on January 14; it is full of comedy, action and romance, the film beginning in Canada, then traveling to Banaras and eventually making its way to Punjab, showcasing the great Indian joint family along the way. It is a Top Angle Productions film, produced by Nitin Manmohan and Samir Karnik, and directed by Samir himself.

Dharmendra is excited, naturally. "After 50, they say the reel of life gets fast, but I am now a 75-year-old boy," he exclaimed thumping me on the back with his big hand. I was having breakfast with the Deols, stuffed parathas with butter churned on their farm in Lonavala, a tall glass of lassi. This is what Dharmendra has every morning, not just on his birthday. He talked, Sunny, Bobby and I listened. "Fifty years has gone just like that," he started, "but I have had exceptional luck. I was a school teacher's son who wanted to be an actor simply because it is human nature to want to be loved, liked and admired. I just wanted a Fiat car, a flat, and to be seen in film posters. Today, fans call me from Tunisia and Nigeria!"

Age has been kind with him. Not just in body, but also in mind. At 75, he retains the hearty enthusiasm with which he started off this 50-year journey in Bollywood; a young man boarding the Frontier Mail from his Sanahwal village in Ludhiana to come to Bombay and audition for the Filmfare's talent hunt. And then going on to become the real hero in a glam world where actors compete against action stars. Though Dharmendra is somewhat disillusioned with the film industry today. "It is a mandi," he grumbled, "and actors are like hawkers." His heart tells him not to do this kind of work any more. "But my bloody brains says no, you've got to do it," he added, "because I am always in search of another talent contest... and there may be someone searching for me."

In a way, then, Yamla Pagla Deewana is what Dharmendra had been looking for. A film that he believes is God's gift to the Deol family. In 2007, they made Apne, an emotional film with a sports background. "People liked it," he recalled, "but this is more like a true story, it has punches of emotion that will bring tears to people's eyes... this is my experience of 50 years telling me." Working with Sunny and Bobby in the film has helped to break that wall that exists between fathers and sons.

"I can't say anything negative about them," Dharmendra admitted, "they are good boys, hard-working actors, but Bobby is an escapist, Sunny is an introvert, we feel for each other, but when we sit together... we don't speak. I want more from them. I want to give more. I want to hug them. But stop myself, I don't know why. There is an awkwardness between us. Though in the film, Bobby calls me a kamina — so naturally, so easily, I wonder how!"

The panache of paaji
Jai Arjun Singh | 2010-12-18 01:10:00

Dharmendra turned 75 this month. Pause for a bit and let that sink in. Think of the exuberant Veeru in Sholay, the idealistic Satyakam, the hunk who took off his shirt in Phool Aur Patthar. How could any of these people be a septuagenarian? It defies belief.
But now flip a decade or two forward to the bad, bad 1980s, where a fifty-plus actor played the red-eyed revenge-seeker in a series of assembly-line potboilers, growling "Kutte, kaminey" every now and again, and generally marking himself out for caricature. It isnтАЩt so difficult to imagine that old hamster passing gracelessly into his retirement years, is it? The Dharmendra of B-movies like Insaaf Kaun Karega (in which he tickled a lethargic tiger during an unconvincing fight scene in the villainтАЩs den) is a universe removed from the melancholy young man showing guests around a ramshackle film set in Guddi, recalling that some of Bimal RoyтАЩs greatest movies had been shot here.
Even a casual glance reveals that DharmendraтАЩs many-phased career spanned some of the most memorable high points of mainstream Hindi cinema as well as some of its most embarrassing excesses. From the 1980s onwards, he made career choices that eventually turned him into the butt of SMS jokes. (Question: Why are Indian dogs so thin? Answer: Dharmendra has drunk up all their blood.) But at his best, and in the hands of directors who knew how to channel his strengths, he was one of BollywoodтАЩs finest comedians, as well as one of its most soulful romantic heroes.
As a child, I had a one-dimensional perspective on garam Dharam (action man, occasional buffoon), but a little later, watching Sholay again in my teens, I came to the uneasy conclusion that I preferred DharmendraтАЩs Veeru to Amitabh BachchanтАЩs Jai. This was sacrilegious on more than one front: AB was my favourite actor and he played an author-backed role, the quiet, understated guy who sacrifices himself for the larger cause and wins the audienceтАЩs sympathy. Why would anyone prefer a boisterous hero who prances about with Hema Malini? But the more I watched Sholay, the more I felt that DharmendraтАЩs performance was the beating heart of the film, giving it a positive energy that offset its gloomier elements (GabbarтАЩs relentless evil, the ThakurтАЩs morbid waiting about for revenge). The temple scene where Veeru plays God, the classic "suicide" scene atop the water tank, even the scene where he lasciviously tries to teach Basanti to shoot down mangoes...these are superb examples of physical comedy. HeтАЩs the clown prince and the hero rolled into one, and he balances the two parts flawlessly.
None of this is to suggest that Dharmendra was a consistently good performer (least of all in dramatic roles), but thereтАЩs no question that even in the blemished later stages of his career he was capable of doing interesting things when encouraged. I think in particular of his role in J P DuttaтАЩs intelligently written gangland movie Hathyar (1989). As a middle-aged don guilt-stricken about his relationship with a disapproving younger brother, he shows signs of what could have been if better scripts had come his way. ItтАЩs a performance that shows a genuine feel for the characterтАЩs internal conflict, his yearning for an earlier time and his knowledge that one can never return to innocence.
Strangely, this aspect of the Hathyar role reminds me of Dharmendra playing "himself" in Guddi, especially the scene where he says that despite having become a popular actor heтАЩs still a young village boy at heart. With any other actor, that line would seem disingenuous, but when paaji says it, you believe him. To my mind these two performances, 20 years apart, sum up the appeal of this very transparent тАФ but also, in his own way, enigmatic тАФactor.

Ahana won't do films: Dharmendra
Suruchi Sharma , TNN, Jan 11, 2011, 12.00am IST

Denying all reports surrounding Ahana Deol's foray into Bollywood, Dharmendra said that his younger daughter is not debuting in Bollywood, neither as an actor, nor as a director any time soon.

"The news about Ahana doing a movie is all false and fabricated. She is not interested in acting and she won't be doing any movies in future as well. Though it is her choice – it has always been and it will always be her choice whether she wants to be an actress or not, but I know my child," said Dharmendra.

Talking about Ahana's varied interests in life, the senior Deol said, "My daughter has a very artistic bent of mind and she is a very keen observer. She has knowledge about filmmaking and she even did a course in fashion designing. You know, she is a dreamy sort of a girl. Just like any other youngster her age, she wants to do everything. So right now she is kind of exploring her career options."

"The idea of becoming an actor never crossed my mind seriously. Given a choice, I'd never show my face on screen. I simply hate it," Ahana had said some time ago. Last we got to know about Ahana was that she was apparently busy with filmmaking and editing courses at Subhash Ghai's film institute and at a prominent film school in New York. So is it direction that's her calling, we asked papa Deol. "I don't think so. She is a farmer's daughter and we father and daughter have decided that we will grow organic food and vegetables at our farmhouse. She has done a course in organic farming too. Woh mitti se judi ladki hai, and I think we'll enjoy growing vegetables."

So, no Bollywood calling for Dharam paaji's younger daughter, at least not for now.

Thriving allure
Rajiv Vijayakar

Dharmendra has been working in the Hindi film industry for over 50 years now, but to this day, he values the love his fans shower on him the most, writes Rajiv Vijayakar

He’s crossed 75. His debut film was released over 50 years ago. But Dharmendra’s sheer enthusiasm has only increased. His simple nature is at odds with his sustained mega successful career and superstar status. Garam Dharam prefers to be loved by people and he loves them in return. As he says, four days after Yamla Pagla Deewana opens and is declared a bumper hit, “It’s the love of my fans that makes me feel younger!”

How does he feel about the success of Yamla Pagla Deewana? “I am excited, but I am scared of the responsibility of doing even better. That’s what a film star’s career is all about. Apne was big, Yamla… is much bigger, and now, we Deols, have to make something even better for the audience,” he quips.

As warm as ever, Dharmendra is a little more candid than he normally is. We speak first of his highly evolved comic talent. He smiles and says, “I enjoy doing comedy, but it is much more difficult than doing romantic scenes. Timing is all-important and so is spontaneity. I love adding my own lines and my touches to the script, often at the last moment.” He goes on, “Comedy always works on the element of surprise. Mehmood was a master at improvisation and I had to learn to be one too. He would change his lines and actions so spontaneously that I had to just react!”

On improvisation

Few are aware of the actor’s significant inputs into his famous comic sequences. “In Sholay, Salim-Javed had not thought of that special inflection on ji in the famous line, “Main aa rahaa hoon, mausi-ji!” But that small addition of mine made it famous!” says the actor. “Similarly, in Mera Gaon Mera Desh, I penned a small dialogue for the scene where I approach Asha Parekh, disguised as a sadhu and say, “Sona, yaane man ka chain khona,” he adds.

He attributes his exceptional talent to a special force. “None of my comic performances in films like Seeta Aur Geeta, Chupke Chupke, Pratiggya, Sholay, Ghazab and Nauker Biwi Ka were even remotely similar to each other. I am blessed.” He explains that when an actor intersperses emotions into comedy, it helps build a greater connect with audiences. “I had kept this in mind, which is why the comedy in Yamla Pagla Deewana has an emotional core to it,” says Dharmendra.

Interestingly, he discloses that while he plays a conman in the film, he also conned his way into the film. “The original story had only Sunny and Bobby as leads and the film was titled Double Trouble. But another producer had already registered the title and would not part with it. Therefore, I jokingly told my sons that we should title the film Triple Trouble and star in it too as I was longing to get back in front of the camera after Apne. Sunny and Bobby loved the idea and the rest is history,” he says.

Why doesn’t he do more films then? “For 20 long years, I worked in double-shifts and performed in varied films to earn money and also because I loved acting,” says the actor. “But now, I have a more disciplined schedule. I wake up early, do my yoga, write poetry and lead a relaxed life. I am loving it,” he adds.

Dharmendra has a few regrets though. One being that he did not spend enough time with his parents. “When parents grow old, they want to see their children successful. They do not expect material gifts. All they want is quality time with their children. And when my children spend time with me, discuss their work, plans and achievements in life, I feel blessed that they are doing something, which maybe, I didn’t do for my parents.”

As an actor, Dharmendra has never promoted himself. He says, “How can I brag about myself? Over 50 of my films ran for 25 to 100 weeks on the big screen, but I never made a conscious attempt to benefit from their success. People have always loved me and they still do. This sentiment is extremely important to me because in the glamour business, popularity is short-lived; success isn’t something you experience for ever, but I still have loyal fans even after completing 50 years in the film industry. I regard this as my biggest achievement.”

He confesses his amusement at the marketing and promotional activities they had to conduct before the release of Yamla Pagla Deewana. “In our time, we always maintained a low profile unlike today where stars are seen everywhere — on the big screen, on television, promoting their films all the time, even after a film has released! But it’s fun,” he says.

Writer in the making

Dharmendra will soon reunite professionally with Hema Malini in Tell Me O Khuda (Malini’s directorial venture) and will be seen for the first time on screen with his daughter Esha Deol. The actor had once said that Esha would never face the camera.

Dharmendra, however, denies giving this statement. “Every father wants his children, especially his daughters, to have a stress-free life. Acting is a profession where you run from one illusion to another. I remember my mother’s pain when she would see me struggle, rise and battle failure. ‘You are living for and dying with every film,’ she once said,” remembers Dharmendra.

The emotional dad raves about his daughter’s talent. “Esha is the daughter of a divine lady and has Jat blood too! She has to be good! It was so touching to watch her act that I would go and cry alone in my make-up room.” What about Ahana? “She’s finding her forte still. She’s an athlete and a football player. She is exploring other career options as well.”

We then talk about his hidden talent of writing poetry. “I have put my deepest feelings and thoughts on paper for decades,” he replies. “There has always been a writer in me. I have written a song in Yamla Pagla Deewana and I am writing a film script called Portable Lover, which is about an aspiring film star.”

The emotional actor is happy that his children have inherited his simplicity and sentimental outlook. “I love people and I don’t like to hurt anyone. If anyone hurts me, I go and tell them about it very frankly. We Deols try and give back whatever affection we get. But, whatever we give is not because we expect something in return.”

And who are his friends in the industry? “I have always got along with everyone. But Shatrughan Sinha and Danny Denzongpa are very close to me,” says the actor.

2011 - Year of the Deols

January 2011, Yamla Pagla Deewana - YPD was a great start to the year for the 3 Superstar Deols. Dharmendra, Sunny and Bobby struck gold at the Box Office giving their 2nd Hit together after Apne (2007). Unlike Apne which had a slow start and then gained momentum, YPD was a winner from day one. Reason, the Deols admitted that marketing a movie is as important as making it, they came out all guns blazing and were heartened by the result. The movie garnered around Rs 65 Cr nett at the box-office, which is superb considering the movie was made on a budget of Rs 25 Cr (including P&A). Super Hit

April 2011, Thank You - Well Thank You was not exactly what people had expected yet the movie thanks to a good cast did decent business to save its face atleast. Bobby Deol did a good job along with rest of the cast, the movie managed to scrap through to safety with Rs 44 Cr nett collections. Average.

July 2011, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara - Abhay Deol, who has carved his own niche, finally got a big commercial success with ZNMD. While Taya and Bhaiyya Deols were celebrating with YPD, Abhay joins the party with ZNMD. The movie has garnered around Rs 28.5 Cr nett in its opening weekend and is on its way to become a Hit.

Esha Deol is also making a comeback with Tell Me Ooh Khudda this September while Hema Malini was seen opposite Amitabh in Bbuddah, which did above average business.

Sunny Deol has Mohalla 80 and I Love New Year coming up before the year ends and Bobby Deol will be seen in Abbas Mustan's Players. And if you thought that was all, well Dharmendra will debut on the small screen on July 29 as a judge in India's Got Talent Season 3

The Deols also launched their official website and social network campaigns to interact with fans earlier this year. Meanwhile, Sunny Deol has made the iron hot by showcasing the teaser of Ghayal Returns which is slated for a 2012 release.

Looks like 2011 is clearly the year of the Deols.

Be sure that The Deol Family will keep giving great entertainment for years to come, even if they are down, they will strike back like they have always. However, with Abhay re-writing the rules and Rocky in the wings the Deol clan seems to have a great future ahead.

Bollywood India Magazine - May 2012:

Canada’s favourite Bollywood icon was in Toronto and he managed to outshine a room that was packed with political leaders and corporate honchos, all gathered for the launch of the Punjabi International Film Academy Awards (PIFAA) that debuts in Toronto later this year.

As the brand ambassador of the awards, veteran Bollywood actor and a robust Punjabi, Dharmendra wooed the gathering with his humble and modest demeanor. “PIFAA is the first global event that will recognize the contribution of Punjabi artists to the film industry. I feel weighed down by the title assigned to me. There is a lot to be done in these months leading up to the awards weekend to make it a grand success”, said Dharmendra. His nonchalant yet charming style kept the audience enthralled as he signed off with a few sentences in Punjabi.

Seated alongside him was Om Puri, critically acclaimed Indian film actor who is
also a patron of PIFAA and Neeru Bajwa, popular Punjabi actress who is born and raised in Canada.

Om Puri added, “The awards will create a platform to identify and groom fresh Punjabi talent for the film industry. A contest will be announced shortly and the winners will star in a fulllength feature film.”

The PIFAA function will be held at the Air Canada Centre on August 4, 2012. The awards weekend will comprise of several events across the GTA. Keep tuning in to Bollywood Movies Of The Month for complete coverage.

http://bobbydeol.forum24.ru/?1-9-0-00000013-000-0-0-1273669954

Salman Khan Comes To Dharmendra’s Rescue!

The Times Of India

Looks like Dharmendra-Hema’s life has never been easy post marriage and it has become still difficult after their children have grown up. With differences with the actor’s sons – Sunny and Bobby Deol over his second marriage to Hema, the veteran actor couple have been facing umpteen number of difficult situations, the recent one being at Esha Deol’s wedding.

Apparently, Dharmendra looked mighty upset because many media persons were more interested in knowing about the reason behind the absence of his two sons rather than congratulating him on his daughter’s marriage. They went on haranguing poor daddy Dharmendra and later inside the reception area he was heard complaining to Hema about these questions.

But luckily for the actor it was Salman Khan who came to lend his shoulders to the senior actor he is deeply fond of. And while giving tips on saving oneself from such embarrassing situations, Salman advised Dharmendra, “Don’t entertain them, ignore them.”

Even in the past, both, husband and wife have turned to each other for comfort whenever they have faced with such awkard situations. Few months back, when Hema and Esha were promoting their film, Tell Me O Khuda, Esha was repeatedly asked about the rumours of her drug rehabilitation. Esha had faced barrage of questions sportingly whereas Hema looked extremely upset and had almost stopped doing interviews. Probably she is not used to facing such scandalous questions. She further went upto Dharmendra who immediately guessed something was wrong.

Hema whispered into his ears and further gave the media her mindful, saying, “When you guys ask this question it affects me very badly. I am a creative person, it affects my creativity.” The actress had taken some time to get back to her usual self.

According to many senior photographers from the media, Dharmendra never agrees to do photo-shoot with his sons. He says, “I have two daughters, too, what do I tell them?” Probably these kind of painful moments will keep haunting the veteran actors.

"Poor reporting. Salman Khan's name appeared once only, but his name features on the headline for bringing in some sensationalism. However, it's the fact that journalists always love to poke someone's wound to see whether blood is oozing out of it or not. Being in limelight, celebrities have to bear this. I sympathize Dharmendraji and Hemaji for this."

Why Sunny, Bobby skipped Esha's wedding

Dharmendra (C) Sunny Deol(R) and Bobby Deol dance during the music launch of the comedy-drama film 'Yamla Pagla Deewana' in Mumbai on December 9, 2010.
Mumbai, March 28 — The Deols - Dharamendra, Sunny and Bobby - Thursday wished luck to Sanjay Dutt who has been convicted under the Arms act for his role in the 1993 Mumbai bombings.

"This is my family. If they are hurt, so am I... my heart says that he will be out soon," said Dharmendra, who was seen with Sanjay in films like "Hathyar" and "Ilaaka", at a promotional event of his upcoming film "Yamla Pagla Deewana 2".
On March 21, the Supreme Court upheld Sanjay's conviction under the Arms Act in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case and sentenced him to five years in jail.
He was asked to surrender in four weeks to serve his remaining term of about three-and-half years as he has already spent 18 months in jail.
Sunny, who also worked with Sanjay in "Yodha" and "Kshatriya", said the actor is "close to me".
"We have done lots of films together. I am very sad to hear all this. I am sure it will be painful for him. A mistake is a mistake for life. I feel sad for him," he added.
Bobby said: "He (Sanjay) is a sweetheart. I have known him since I was growing up. I hope things work out for him

Dharmendra turns 50, special film to celebrate

"The film will have bits of the actor’s life and his character is based on his own personality. “Dharamji’s character in Cheers will be similar to how he is in real life. Therefore, there is a lot of humour in the film. One cannot separate humour from Dharamji.”
However, Sangeeth says that the film will not be a biopic. “The film has bits of his life but is not completely biographical. It is a unique concept and will interest and entertain everyone,” says the director."

" - How is Esha? You must be missing her after she got married...
I speak to her daily. Bharat is a great guy and she is very happy with him.

The interview will be incomplete without asking you to name five favourites from your repertoire...
Pratigya, Satyakam, Chupke Chupke, Apne, Sholay - but not necessarily in that order."

Dharmendra – An actor and a gentleman

He landed on the streets of Mumbai in 1958.
He was in a bus full of eager young men, cracking fingers and chewing on their nails. They were contestants of the first ever Filmfare Talent Hunt. His smart looks caught the eye of producer Arjun Hingorani and the rest is a glorious 55 year run called Dharmendra’s career.
Today he’s known as the most handsome man to have walked the soils of showbiz in India. Back in the ’70s Dharmendra was considered one of the best looking men
in the world. So much so, put him in a tailored suit and you’d have competition for Sean Connery and Paul Newman.

But Dharmendra’s real feat is more impressive than his looks. He’s survived showbiz and he’s survived superstars. He started his career in 1960 and had to deal with the mercurial rise of Shammi Kapoor. In the ’60s, he had to contend with Rajendra ‘Jubilee’ Kumar as well. Come 1969 he lived and thrived in the shadow of the Rajesh Khanna phenomenon. And just before he could stake claim to the marquee crown in the early ’70s, came the angry young man Amitabh Bachchan. Having said that, despite not carrying favours from the media or the critics, Dharmendra became the industry’s favourite leading man. He earned the epithet of ‘bankable star’ because his films, no matter how loosely crafted, earned the proverbial big bucks. Once a handsome hunk and romantic star, Dharam transformed into an action icon in the ’80s and the ’90s. And they started calling him He-Man.The reason Dharmendra continued to be a successful leading man, even as he neared his 60s, was thanks to his charisma. Much before Shah Rukh Khan came to own the word charismatic, Dharmendra made a living off it. Now well in his late-70s, Dharmendra still commands a hardy fan following. Yamla Pagla Deewana is a successful Deol family franchise and Dharmendra is more than just nostalgia value. His sense of comic timing defies the creases on his skin.
If you thought men for all seasons were extinct, you thought wrong. Clockwise: With Nutan in Bimal Roy’s Bandini (1963), With Sharmila Tagore in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Satyakam (1969), With Hema Malini in Ramesh Sippy’s Seeta Aur Geeta (1972) and With Zeenat Aman in Shakti Samanta’s CID (1970)

Film Factory

In a career spanning 55 years, Dharmendra has worked in over 300 films. You don’t need to be Aryabhatta to figure that out, that’s an average of close to six films a year. European actors and filmmakers will tell you that the fact is plain preposterous. But it’s true. Dharmendra was nothing less than a film factory. The ’60s had memorable films like Bandini, Satyakam, Phool Aur Patthar and Haqeeqat. But from the ’70s right through to the ’80s and the ’90s he worked in every big and mid-budget action saga. Films like Sholay, Charas, Dream Girl, Seeta Aur Geeta, Dharam Veer, Professor Pyarelal and many more became silver, gold and platinum jubilees at the box-office.Clockwise: With Satyen Kappu and Anamika in Nasir Husain’s Yaadon Ki Baraat (1973), With Sanjeev Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan in Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay (1975), With Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol in Samir Karnik’s Yamla Pagla Deewana (2010) and With Om Prakash in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Chupke Chupke (1975)
Clockwise: In a candid conversation with Shashi Kapoor , Posing for the shutterbugs with Vinod Khanna and Shatrughan Sinha, With Rajendra Kumar and the crew of his film and All smiles in the company of Sunil Dutt

Mr Popular

Dharmendra is also one of the friendliest people around. He’s an emotional man. And because he wears his emotions on his sleeve, he used to celebrate every little moment of joy. He used to throw parties nineteen to the dozen. It’s said that whisky flowed from the taps when Dharmendra threw a party to celebrate the success of Ghayal at the Filmfare Awards. And he used to liven up film dos like a true-blue showstopper. His camaraderie with fellow actors was something well-known. What with quirky memories like his habit of greeting Mehmood with a kiss. Whenever the two ran into each other, they’d share a harmless but passionate peck on the cheek. According to the late comedian, Dharam was simply irresistible.
Clockwise: Young Dharmendra meets Prithviraj Kapoor, With Rajesh Khanna on the sets Dharm Aur Kanoon, Meeting Amitabh Bachchan at a film promotion event and With Karisma Kapoor, Amrish Puri, KC Bokadia and Akshay Kumar .From left to right: Dharmendra always looked the best in a suit. He is dressed to kill in all whites and a fedora. He completes the traditional look with a Nehru jacket.

Style Icon

Sartorial sense was another dimension
of Dharamendra’s success story. Even today, he’s one of the most stylish men around. Put him in a suit and no one becomes dapper like the jat from Punjab. Back in the ’60s, Dharam made a habit out of being the best dressed man in Bombay. His textured suits, slim fit pants and fancy sweaters made him king of fashion. He was one of the few Indian men who pulled off leisure suits in the ’70s with style. His all black denim heavy look in Yaadon Ki Baraat is still remembered with a thousand sighs. Not to mention the jacket and jeans combos that made him the rugged hero of the ‘80s. And if you thought the mosaic shirts in the ’90s were outlandish, you haven’t seen Dharam pulling ’em off like a fashion wonder. From left to right: He can play the ultimate cool with a hat and denims. Sweaters looked best on his natural wide frame. Action heroes look best in black leather and Dharam is no exception.Rehearsing dance moves with Zeenat Aman on the set of Dharam-Veer. Raj Kumar Kohli directs Dharmendra and Diljeet Kaur in Jeene Nahi Doonga and having fun with Sharmila Tagore and director Dulal Guha on the set of Dil Aur Deewar.

Man At Work

As an actor Dharmendra grew in leaps and bounds as his career progressed. He began as a nervous and overtly concerned actor in Arjun Hingorani’s Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere (1960). In fact, in his earlier films he used to urge his directors to reshoot scenes to look better in the frames. But by the ’70s, Dharam was so confident that he cared not for fickle insecurities. He was the life of many a film set. Co-stars Sharmila Tagore, Rekha, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan and Moushumi Chatterjee have sung praises of him time and again. Not just that, it was Dharmendra who had faith in Amitabh Bachchan’s talent and was influential in the tall and lanky actor bagging a role in Sholay. By the ’80s, Dharmendra had become the veritable action star. He’d stop working for posterity. Instead, along with Amitabh Bachchan and Vinod Khanna, Dharam was one of the pillars of commercial films, which triumphed over parallel cinema. By the mid-’80s, Dharmendra established Vijayta Films and turned producer to launch son Sunny Deol in Betaab (1983).
He continued the trend and launched son Bobby Deol (Barsaat – 1995) and nephew Abhay Deol (Socha Na Tha – 2005) as actors. With Rajkumar Santoshi, Sunny Deol and Meenakshi Sheshadri. Addressing a BJP political rally and receiving his Padma Bhushan from the then President Pratibha PatilClockwise: With Sharmila Tagore, With Zeenat Aman and Italian actress Gina Lollobrigida, With Madhavi and other ladies from the cast
and crew of Neela Aakash and with Suraiya

Ladies Man

Yes women were writing letters in blood to Rajesh Khanna. But ladies in B-town were swooning over India’s answer to James Dean. Why not? Dharmendra and his soft etiquette with the ladies was a known fact. He was the perfect gentleman. And that’s how he wooed the most desirable woman in the country – Hema Malini. By her own admission, Hema had turned him down umpteen times only to see Dharam bounce back with even more charm. And it was this indelible romantic aura that allowed him to romance actresses like Amrita Singh, Dimple Kapadia, Sonu Walia, Sonam, Poonam Dhillon and Rati Agnihotri on screen at a time when they were also working with his son Sunny.Clockwise: In a candid moment with Rekha, striking a pose with Meena Kumari and with Shabana Azmi in the shelved film BichchooFeeding Saira Banu (Extreme Left) Chatting with Lata Mangeshkar (Lower Left), Being chivalrous with Neelam and Richa Sharma (Extreme Right), Sharing a quip with Mallika Sherawat (Below Right), With Kimi Katkar and Swapna (Centre)Clockwise: Celebrating Holi with son Sunny and daughter Ajeta, Celebrating son Sunny’s birthday , With eldest daughter Vijeta, Photographed with wife Prakash and daughter Vijeta, In a candid moment with Vijeta and Prakash

Family Man

Dharmendra was married four years before he landed in Mumbai for the Filmfare Talent Hunt in 1958. And he was already the father of Vijeta, after whom his production company Vijayta Films is named. Ajay Singh Deol more popularly known as Sunny was two-year-old at the time too. Since then Dharmendra’s immediate family has grown with Aje ta and Vijay Singh (Bobby) Deol. Not just that, Dharmendra ensured his success gave his entire family from Sanehwal in Punjab a chance at the good life of Mumbai. His father Kewal Kishan, mother Satwant Kaur and his elder sister all moved to Mumbai. Ajit Deol, Dharmendra’s cousin and Abhay Deol’s father, too became Dharam’s associate in showbiz. Dharmendra married Hema Malini in 1980 but did not divorce his first wife Prakash. Reportedly, he converted to Islam to be able to retain two wives. It was a move that was appreciated in some corners whilst criticised in others. The Deol family nonetheless extended with Esha and Ahana, daughters of Hindi cinema’s dream couple; Dharmendra and Hema Malini.Clockwise: With Esha Deol, Hema Malini and Ahana Deol, With brother Ajit Deol, wife Prakash, son Sunny, daughter Vijeta, mother Satwant and elder sister, At a dinner with Sunny and Sunil Gavaskar and Pictured with wife Hema MaliniClockwise: Dharmendra’s first photo published in Filmfare, Admiring the scenary with Balraj Sahni and Playing cricket on the sets

Myriad moods

He might’ve been a good looking man but he was never vain. In fact, Dharmendra was quite the sport and possessed an incredible sense of humour. Dr Parimal Tripathi from Chupke Chupke is possibly the closest adaptation of Dharam in real life. He could pose for shutterbugs in the most outrageous costumes. There are about a thousand pictures in the Filmfare archive that are ridiculously funny, simply because Dharam Paji doesn’t mind laughing at himself. He’s a born entertainer and we reckon, like most eccentric geniuses, doesn’t know where to stop.Clockwise: Sharing a funny moment with Farida Jalal, Dancing to the tunes of Ramanand Sagar, Hosting a show for the All India Radio, Dressed in drag with Zeenat Aman for Kaatilon Ke Kaatil

http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2012-02-15/ludhiana/31062654_1_dharmendra-esha-deol-cinema-hall

'Esha Deol is going to marry without any controversy'

SAHNEWAL, LUDHIANA: They have seen Esha Deol only in reel life. But still they feel attachment with her as she is the daughter of "pind ka munda" (son of soil) Dharmendra. And when news about her engagement with Mumbai-based Bharat Takhtani on Sunday reached the village, it became a hot topic for the villagers.

Almost everybody is aware about the engagement of Isha in Sahnewal, the village from where Dharmendra took a train to Mumbai more than 50 years ago. Dharmendra's father, Kewal Krishan, was headmaster in the government primary school here in the 60s and the family used to live in a rented house. Villagers are now discussing as to who all from the village will get the invitation to attend Esha's marriage.

"I am sure 3-4 people from the village will get the invitation," said Tabinder Singh, a former sarpanch of the village. Tabinder Singh, who lives near Dharmendra's rented house in the village, had acted as a sarpanch in a movie "Yaari Jatt Di" with Dharmendra's cousin, Veerendra.

"We Jats are very sensitive about the issue of marriage and prefer to marry our daughters in time. In this case, even her parents are happy as we have seen the statement of Hema Malini. We are happy that Esha is going to be married without any controversy," said a former headman of the village. Villagers are even guessing the date of the marriage, though Singh said that it might take some time. He even recalled the marriage of Prakash Kaur and Dharmendra and birth of Sunny Deol in a small rented but congested house of Deols behind the government school.

Esha and Bharat have reportedly been dating for the last 13 months. "We live in an orthodox society in Punjab but in metros like Mumbai, people are open-minded about such affairs," said a resident, Shiv Karan Singh, recalling how local people could hardly digest the second marriage of Dharmendra with Hema Malini. Shiv Karan Singh owns a cinema hall, known as "Dharmendra's cinema" in the village despite the fact the he-man does't have any share in it. The cinema hall has been closed recently.

Excited over the news of Esha's marriage, an engineering student, Sahil Pathak, 22, said, "After the marriage, she should visit the village. The Deols must invite people from their native village to attend the marriage." Even 72-year old farmer, Mukhtyan Singh, who was a student of Dharmendra's father in fifth class, is taking interest in the news. "Bahut acchhi bat hai, hum khus hain" (It's a good news for us, we are happy)," he said. The love of villagers towards the "action king" can be gauged from the fact that they celebrate the birthday of Dharmendra with fanfare every year.

---------------

Dharmendra unplugged

"Frankly, the interview almost crash landed at the take off stage itself, as he gave a witty reply to my opening line which was as follows: “Since your life is an open book, let’s start by exploring from the first page, your early days.”

“Khushwant, if my life is an open book, what you will interview me for?” he replied, making me almost jump out of my seat."

"Born in Nasrali village near Khanna to a school master, Dharmendra’s early life was like any village boy of those days. Simple, playful and naughty. His father was soon transferred to Sahnewal, a larger village which boasted of a railway station and a cinema hall"

A few months ago Salman fans had opened a restaurant, Bhaijaanz, styled after him…

Now, Dharmendra inaugurated a restaurant styled after him in Delhi today. Titled Garam Dharam, Dhaba Te Theka, it is a first-of-its-kind outlet in Delhi’s Connaught Place area. The restaurant has taken inspiration from the movies, dialogues and songs of Dharam Paaji’s movies. The entrance of the restro has been adorned by posters of the actor’s films.
While Dharmendra had shared some of his inputs for the look of the outlet, he revealed that a restaurant was not an easy thing to work on. The 79-year-old said, “I was not ready to do it because I don’t know the ABCD of this (restaurant) business. I can’t do anything except acting. I’m a son of a farmer and my upbringing is like that only, but seeing all this love and support made me feel special.”
He is sure that foodies will love this new Garam Dharam, Dhaba Te Theka restaurant. He suggests, ”Everyone loves me so I am sure people will love this place too that has my vibes everywhere.
The restaurant boasts of a 4,000 sq ft space, which has been enlivened with filmy elements involving Dharmendra. When he was asked if he enjoys a dhaba or a restaurant, he said he loves using his hands to eat rather than knives and forks. He revealed, “I’m quite shy with all the dining etiquettes. I don’t know how people enjoy with a fork and a knife. Till the time I can’t use my hand, I can’t enjoy food. I feel like slurping my fingers.”
According to the owners, the restaurant is apt for those who want the best dhaba cuisine at affordable price. Garam Dharam is for all those people who just want the best at best prices. A meal for two at this Dharmendra-styled restaurant would cost Rs.800 to Rs.1,000, exclusive of tax.

I want thighs like yours: Dharmendra

http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/news/features/dharmendra-remembers-childhood-admiration-shashi-kapoor-heartbreaking-post/

Dharmendra remembers his ‘childhood admiration’ Shashi Kapoor in a heartbreaking post!
Shashi Kapoor, one of most talented film personalities and the handsome actor, breathed his last Monday evening after a prolonged illness of kidney at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. The late actor’s last rites were performed on Tuesday with many big Bollywood personalities in attendance to bid farewell to the iconic star. The actor was give state funeral with Indian tricolor and three gun salute. Shashi Kapoor was 79 and had been on dialysis for failing kidneys. He was survived by his three children – Sanjana Kapoor, Kunal Kapoor and Karan Kapoor.

While the entire nation mourns the loss of the legendary Shashi Kapoor, veteran actor Dharmendra also shared his love and admiration for him. Sharing a lovely candid picture of Shashi Kapoor with his older brother Raj Kapoor, Dharmendra made everyone nostalgic. Dharmendra called him his childhood admiration and said the world will miss him. He wrote, “You have been a childhood admiration, a wonderful actor and a beautiful human being .. this world is going to miss you Shashi!!”

Dharmendra had got the chance to work with Shashi Kapoor in Krodhi together. They did really share a great work rapport and also were close friends.

On the work front, Dharmendra is currently busy shooting Yamla Pagla Deewana- Phir Se with his sons Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol.
